Improving Teacher Intervention Decisions Using The Fraction Error Flowchart, Katherine Pettrey Apr 2023

Improving Teacher Intervention Decisions Using The Fraction Error Flowchart, Katherine Pettrey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the U.S. the fifth-grade mathematics curriculum is largely devoted to building fraction skills, providing an essential foundation for future success in mathematics (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008). Unfortunately, students in the U.S. struggle with fraction proficiency (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2022; Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2018). Even when teachers facilitate interventions for struggling students those interventions may not be aligned with student need (Riccomini, 2005). Additionally, teachers struggle to identify research-based practices (RBPs) when presented with student data (Means et al., 2009). The purpose of this study was to create and test a flowchart that could …

Is There A Balance Between The U.S. Government Secrecy Regime And Free Speech Rights Of Government Employees?: The Legal Landscape Of The U.S. Government Control Of Information, Qinqin Wang Apr 2023

Is There A Balance Between The U.S. Government Secrecy Regime And Free Speech Rights Of Government Employees?: The Legal Landscape Of The U.S. Government Control Of Information, Qinqin Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the tension between the U.S. government’s control of information and government employees’ claims to free speech rights. The U.S. government prepublication review is a censorship system that requires former and current federal government employees to submit any materials intended for publication to their agencies for prior review before they attempt to make any external communication or proceed with any publications. The prepublication review regime has become an essential means by which the U.S. government controls internal information, and has long been controversial because of its censorship nature. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on legal disputes between the U.S. …

Evaluating Attitudes Toward Non-Formal Science Education Programs Among High School Science Teachers In Southeast Louisiana, Heather Egger Apr 2023

Evaluating Attitudes Toward Non-Formal Science Education Programs Among High School Science Teachers In Southeast Louisiana, Heather Egger

LSU Master's Theses

Abstract

The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has begun implementing Louisiana Student Standards for Science (LSSS), as well as developing high school science certification programs. The LDOE recognizes that teaching science using three-dimensional learning methods and phenomena based inquiry learning will be a challenge that would be addressed in part by partnerships between formal science teachers and nonformal science education programs. However, limited available information on this topic shows that utilization of nonformal science education opportunities by science educators has declined and, in some instances, have been relegated to unstructured “fun” outings to reward students, often after the final quarter …

Clickbait Compliance And Transnational Corruption, William R. Heaston Apr 2023

Clickbait Compliance And Transnational Corruption, William R. Heaston

University of Dayton Law Review

In the corporate compliance and anti-corruption domains, international standard-setting is in vogue. Recent years have witnessed a flurry of new compliance standards authored by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the world’s leading private standard-setter. ISO claims to offer a more effective way to address transnational corruption risks and related compliance challenges, one that boasts the approval of a global committee of technical experts and enticingly purports to accord with international “best practices.” A number of companies and governments around the world have taken the bait, with many adopting or giving legal effect to ISO’s anti-bribery standard (ISO 37001) in …

Analog Cosmology And Superfluidity In Atomic Gases And Electronic Materials, Anshuman Bhardwaj Apr 2023

Analog Cosmology And Superfluidity In Atomic Gases And Electronic Materials, Anshuman Bhardwaj

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We present a study of analog cosmological models in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and in graphene, and superfluidity in a box-shaped traps. We start by examining the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an expanding toroid that can realize an analog inflationary universe. The expanding condensate forces phonons to undergo redshift and damping due to quantum pressure, owing to the thinness of the ring. We predict that such expanding BECs can exhibit spontaneous phonon creation from the vacuum state and show how it would manifest in the atom density and density correlations and discuss connections with the inflationary theory. …

Journey Of Realization And Adaptation Through Auto/Ethnography: A Shift To Transformative Educational Research, Tara Paudel, Bal Chandra Luitel, Niroj Dahal Apr 2023

Journey Of Realization And Adaptation Through Auto/Ethnography: A Shift To Transformative Educational Research, Tara Paudel, Bal Chandra Luitel, Niroj Dahal

The Qualitative Report

This reflective paper explores Tara's doctoral research journey of realization and adaptation in auto/ethnography as a transformative research methodology. While reflecting on Tara’s journey, the auto/ethnographic paper emphasizes cultural perspectives, interpreting one's own experiences, thoughts, actions, and behaviors relating to society and culture. Likewise, auto/ethnography investigates and associates an individual's confrontation within specific educational, societal, and cultural contexts. With this ethos, the paper demonstrates how Tara, a mathematics teacher and doctoral student, encountered and observed auto/ethnography and discovered it as a path to transformation as a paradigm shift in transformative educational research by connecting lives and research (Dahal et al., …

Investigating How Generation 1.5 Students Notice And Understand Direct Written Corrective Feedback (Wcf), Melissa Bustamante

Theses and Dissertations

The following research focuses on an underrepresented and understudied population in academia, Generation 1.5. Generation 1.5 encompasses a group of individuals who neither fit the categories of first-generation nor second-generation students and often feel caught between two cultures, the American culture and their family’s native culture (Serventy and Allen 1; Goldschmidt and Miller 11). These individuals are neither fully proficient in their L1 or L2 and consequently, share characteristics of L1 and traditional L2 writers (Singhal 2; Ferris 311). This research study examines how university Generation 1.5 students notice and understand direct Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) on treatable and untreatable …

Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair Apr 2023

Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair

The Mathematics Enthusiast

With its bright yellow cover and its ominous title, this book attracts attention. The subtitle, “How big data increases inequality and threatens democracy” signals very strongly that the “math” in question in the title is primarily that which relates to the statistical and computational means of collecting, analysing and using data. For some readers, the title might be surprising, because it challenges the typical understanding of mathematics as an objective and value-neutral discipline. Worse, it claims that mathematics is significantly involved in creating inequality and compromising democracy. If it is true, then the answer to the perennial student question, “when …

Overcoming Misconceptions About Probability A Review Of David J. Hand’S The Improbability Principle, Keith Gallagher

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Have you ever struck up a conversation with a stranger in a coffee shop and been surprised to learn that you were born in the same week, but in different years? Or maybe you have that one annoying friend who always seems to win raffles and lotteries even though you never win anything, and you just can’t figure out how they always get so lucky? Or perhaps, just for fun, you visited a psychic one day, and you were shocked by how much they were able to tell you about yourself. In The Improbability Principle, David J. Hand explains …

Words Matter: Crafting And Critiquing Rhetorically Effective Styles (Engl 002w) Syllabus, Natalie Mera Ford

Aydelotte Curricular Grants

What does it mean to write an awkward or a clear sentence? Who determines what counts as appropriate or "good" writing, and how are such notions of standardized English currently being challenged? Can a scholarly voice be an authentic personal voice, too? In this course, we will examine the grammatical building blocks of written style while scrutinizing larger cultural concerns about the effectiveness of distinct styles. While recognizing famous tenets of style in creative writing, we will primarily focus on stylistic features of academic, civic, and professional discourse. We will learn grammatical terminology and apply it in analyzing and evaluating …

History And Myths Around The Battle Of Shiloh, Trey Lowenthal Apr 2023

History And Myths Around The Battle Of Shiloh, Trey Lowenthal

Student Scholarship

On April 6th and 7th, 1862, the deadliest battle in American history up to that time was waged, with a staggering total of twenty three thousand dead, wounded, and missing.1 Though as guns fell silent on the evening of the 7th, another battle began, the battle for the narrative. It was a battle for the truth of what happened, and it is one that is still waged to this day. Unlike the physical confrontation that took place in 1862, the lines of battle and allegiance are not so easily defined. It is a patchwork of veterans, generals, newspapers, and historians. …

This article traces the development of those traits and their evolution during his elementary and high school years. But it finds that it was in his four years at Whittier College, 1930–1934, particularly in his co-curricular engagements there, that his personality, values, work habits, and skills fully emerged.

Reform And Regression: The Aftermath Of The 1909 Cairo, Illinois Lynching, Kenedy Manuel Apr 2023

Reform And Regression: The Aftermath Of The 1909 Cairo, Illinois Lynching, Kenedy Manuel

History Student Projects

My paper highlights the research of the event and the context and impact of the lynching. My familial connection guided my research and led me to see the positives and negatives of this violent event. The effective use of the 1905 Illinois law against mob lynchings was a state victory. Ida B. Wells and other activists were helpful in this process. But researching the history of Cairo prior to the lynching and the aftermath of the murders, showed that the victory did not impact Cairo sufficiently. The event was not an anomaly once one researches America's problem with lynching at …

A Historical Evaluation Of The Position Of The United States On Genocide Designations: Framing Implications For Xinjiang, Marley Taylor Belanger

Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper evaluates the historical stances of the United States with the international norm against genocide. It further examines how U.S. positions in precedent cases of genocide may help frame the U.S. response to the current crisis in Xinjiang, China. This paper reviews the historical record of the instances when the U.S. government has designated past atrocities to be considered genocides, and identifies patterns of continuity and change in the decision-making process of the U.S. This work then applies the theories of liberalism, constructivism, and realism to interpret the actions of the United States when deciding to recognize genocide formally. …

Theological Foundations Of Nonviolent Communication In The Christian Lived Experience, Edward Khoa Ngô Apr 2023

Theological Foundations Of Nonviolent Communication In The Christian Lived Experience, Edward Khoa Ngô

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

In places globally and locally, people will likely find some sense of division, and/or violence in the world they live. There might be conflict in their homes, workplaces, schools, and places of worship but not limited to those areas. In the 1960’s, psychologist Marshall Rosenberg first developed Nonviolent Communication (NVC) amid the United States of America, starting the work with youth and then spreading to include school integration. NVC has found success in places with histories of violence – among families, prisons, warring tribes, and ethnic/racial groups. As NVC has been witnessed bring greater peace, understanding, and reconciliation to these …

Reading (In) A Quadriform Cosmos:Gospel Books In The Early Christian Bibliographic Imagination, Jeremiah Coogan Apr 2023

Reading (In) A Quadriform Cosmos:Gospel Books In The Early Christian Bibliographic Imagination, Jeremiah Coogan

Jesuit School of Theology

Early Christian thinkers developed the widespread linguistic cosmology of the Roman Mediterranean in a novel way in order to advance a specific bibliographic project: aligning the emergent fourfold Gospel with the structure of the physical cosmos. Employing interlocking concepts from the disciplines of meteorology, geography, music, mathematics, and astronomy, a number of figures—including Irenaeus, Origen, Ephrem, Eusebius, Fortunatianus, Augustine, and Maximus—imagined a Gospel corpus consisting of precisely four texts. Number provided a way to articulate the coherence of the fourfold Gospel—both with itself and with the rest of the world. By situating both familiar and neglected evidence in the context …

Tabular Thinking In Late Ancient Palestine: Instrumentality, Work, And The Construction Of Knowledge, Jeremiah Coogan Apr 2023

Tabular Thinking In Late Ancient Palestine: Instrumentality, Work, And The Construction Of Knowledge, Jeremiah Coogan

Jesuit School of Theology

In late antiquity, a revolution in information technology transformed the practices and possibilities of knowledge. At the cutting edge of this development, several third- and fourth-century figures in Roman Palestine deployed the emerging technology of the column-and-row table as a novel tool of historical and literary scholarship. The Christian scholars Origen and Eusebius and the rabbinic sages of the Palestinian Talmud adapted this specialist technology from grammar and astronomy, and put it to work to structure complex textual corpora. As a “textual machine,” the table generated new possibilities of knowledge. Bringing together literary and material evidence, this study analyses the …
