Dynamic Spectrum Management In 3d Networks Inspired By Biological Systems, Jordan Anthony Patrizi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In this thesis, the challenge of dynamic spectrum management is treated following an economic-based perspective. In particular, a novel bioinspired spectrum allocation from the Network Service Providers (NSPs) to the users is introduced, exploiting the theory of symbiosis under the free competition. The overall objective is to determine the NSPs optimal bandwidth prices to maximize their profit, while satisfying the users bandwidth needs. The aforementioned spectrum management framework is analyzed while exploiting a novel 3D network architecture consisting of High Altitude Platforms (HAPs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and ground gNBs NSPs, each one of them presenting different operational characteristics and …

Inter-organelle contact and communication between mitochondria and sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) maintain cellular homeostasis and are profoundly disturbed during tissue ischemia. We tested the hypothesis that the formin Diaphanous-1 (DIAPH1), which regulates actin dynamics, signal transduction and metabolic functions, contributes to these processes. We demonstrate that DIAPH1 interacts directly with Mitofusin-2 (MFN2) to shorten mitochondria-SR/ER distance, thereby enhancing mitochondria-ER contact in cells including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and macrophages. Solution structure studies affirm the interaction between the Diaphanous Inhibitory Domain and the cytosolic GTPase domain of MFN2. In male rodent and human cardiomyocytes, DIAPH1-MFN2 interaction regulates mitochondrial turnover, mitophagy, and oxidative stress. …

Emotional health problems in the workplace often hinder the integration and retention of autistic employees (AE), a challenge identified in many sectors. Recent literature highlights the consequences of these problems, such as burnout leading to reduced productivity and resignation. Previous research supports the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) for training a variety of specific skills (e.g. riding a bus or plane travel), as well as more complex social skills, such as emotion recognition and functional communication. In addition, existing studies on using physiological self-monitoring in AE training offer a promising approach to promoting improved emotional health. The present paper reports …

Season 01
To better understand how and why sports are a part of education, this episode goes back to where they started. Although the culture of youth sports has certainly evolved, the purpose of interscholastic athletics really has not. Today, just like 100 years ago, educators value the role of sport in preparing kids for success in life. But the structures governing competition have always limited who can participate and how they are recognized. Many thanks to all the guests who contributed their thoughts.

Integrated Pest Management And Behavior Of Stored Grain Beetles, Ethan Doherty
Integrated Pest Management And Behavior Of Stored Grain Beetles, Ethan Doherty
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica, and the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, are two of the most destructive pests of stored rice. Their management has relied heavily upon fumigant insecticides. However, amid growing concerns that fumigant-resistant pests are becoming widespread, there is an urgent need for diversified management techniques and integrated pest management. Here, we explored management techniques and the behavior of these beetles. Host plant resistance toward both beetles was evaluated for 13 varieties of rice. We found large differences among varieties for both beetles in all resistance measures. We found that while nutritional components of a …

Oxidative Stress Effect In Ribosomal Biogenesis In Cancer Cells, Gazmend Temaj
UBT International Conference
Oxidative stress is a condition where the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exceed the normal level on the cell’s antioxidant defenses. Oxidative stress can cause damage of the DNA, proteins, and lipids. Ribosome biogenesis is the process of making ribosomes. Ribosome biogenesis involves the transcription, processing, and assembly of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins (r-proteins) into functional ribosomal subunits. Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, invasion, and metastasis. Cancer cells often have increased levels of oxidative stress and ribosome biogenesis, which can promote their survival, adaptation, and proliferation in the tumor microenvironment. In this review, …
