Evaluating An Institutional Repository: A Case Study Of Singapore Management University, Pin Pin Yeo
Research Collection Library
An institutional repository (IR) was launched in 2010 for a university in Singapore. The motivations of setting up an IR were to dissemination the research output through open access, to promote the university and researchers, and to help increase their research impact. Some quantitative and qualitative performance indicators were selected and used to measure the success of the IR. For the review and the performance indicators, the data used came from the IR at SMU, interviews with faculty members, and a study of a set of journal articles available in the IR to test a hypothesis. The results of the …

Metformin is among the most widely used antidiabetic drugs. Studies over the past few years have identified multiple novel molecular targets and pathways that metformin acts on to exert its beneficial effects in treating type 2 diabetes as well as other disorders involving dysregulated inflammation and redox homeostasis. In this mini-review, we discuss the latest cutting-edge research discoveries on novel molecular targets of metformin in glycemic control, cardiovascular protection, cancer intervention, anti-inflammation, antiaging, and weight control. Identification of these novel targets and pathways not only deepens our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which metformin exerts diverse beneficial biological effects, …

Novel Method Of The Quantification Of Turbulent Fluid Flow In Silicone Artery Phantoms Using Acoustic Analysis, Julia Wong
Master's Theses
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally and is responsible for taking 17.9 million lives per year. Despite the use of clinical treatments and detection methods, there remains a large population of individuals that suffer from CVD whose symptoms are left undetected and untreated prior to a life-threatening cardiac event. This highlights a need for an early detection method that can prevent the manifestation and worsening of the disease as well as address limitations of current early detection methods. An area of interest for early detection of CVD is subclinical atherosclerosis, which is the long, early, asymptomatic stage …

Development Of An Angiogenic Tissue-On-A-Chip Microenvironment, Eric Stuehr
Master's Theses
Preclinical testing is necessary to investigate the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutics before moving to clinical trials, yet approximately 90% of these therapies fail once tested in humans. This has led to increased interest in developing robust preclinical models that accurately mimic the complex human in vivo physiology. Microfluidic devices that can introduce dynamic conditions to 3D cell/organoid cultures, also known as tissue-on-a-chip, have emerged as physiologically relevant in vitro preclinical models that can achieve high throughput screening of therapeutics. The research presented here aimed to develop an angiogenic environment within a novel microfluidic device to stimulate formation of …
Effects Of Recreation In The Niobrara National Scenic River On Aquatic Macroinvertebrates, Jennifer Dailey
Effects Of Recreation In The Niobrara National Scenic River On Aquatic Macroinvertebrates, Jennifer Dailey
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The Niobrara River is a 914 km tributary of the Missouri River. The Niobrara has a 122 km section near Valentine, Nebraska, USA that was designated a National Scenic River in 1991. Despite its protected status, this section of the river still has many human influences including livestock grazing, row-crop agriculture, upriver impoundments, and, most directly, recreational activities like kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. The goal of my thesis was to document macroinvertebrate communities within the Niobrara National Scenic River and evaluate how community assemblages and diversity responded to recreational activities. I also used macroinvertebrate assemblages as indicators for the water …

Faculty Research 2023
We propose an unbiased methodology to rank compounds for advancement into comprehensive preclinical testing for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Translation of compounds to the clinic in AD has been hampered by poor predictive validity of models, compounds with limited pharmaceutical properties, and studies that lack rigor. To overcome this, MODEL-AD's Preclinical Testing Core developed a standardized pipeline for assessing efficacy in AD mouse models. We hypothesize that rank-ordering compounds based upon pharmacokinetic, efficacy, and toxicity properties in preclinical models will enhance successful translation to the clinic. Previously compound selection was based solely on physiochemical properties, with arbitrary cutoff limits, making ranking …

We assessed the efficacy and safety of combining bevacizumab with temsirolimus in patients with advanced extra-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. This NCI-sponsored multicenter, open-label, phase II study (NCT01010126) enrolled patients with advanced, recurrent, or metastatic extra-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. All patients were treated with temsirolimus and bevacizumab until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Temsirolimus 25 mg was administered i.v. on days 1, 8, 15, and 22 and bevacizumab 10 mg/kg i.v. on days 1 and 15 of a 4-week cycle. Discontinuation of temsirolimus or bevacizumab did not require discontinuation of the other agent. The primary endpoints were objective response rate and 6-month progression-free …

Quantitative, Photocurrent Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy, Adam Halaoui
Quantitative, Photocurrent Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy, Adam Halaoui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) is a quickly growing field that has a lot of advantages over more conventional forms of spectroscopy. These advantages all come from the fact that MDCS allows us to get time resolved correlated emission and absorption spectra using very precisely chosen interactions between the density matrix and the excitation laser. MDCS spectra gives the researcher a lot of information that can be extracted purely through qualitative analysis. This is possible because state couplings are entirely separated on the spectra, and once we know how to read the data, we can see how carriers transport in the …

Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly For The Angiosperm Silene Conica., Peter D Fields, Melody M Weber, Gus Waneka, Amanda K Broz, Daniel B Sloan
Faculty Research 2023
The angiosperm genus Silene has been the subject of extensive study in the field of ecology and evolution, but the availability of high-quality reference genome sequences has been limited for this group. Here, we report a chromosome-level assembly for the genome of Silene conica based on Pacific Bioscience HiFi, Hi-C, and Bionano technologies. The assembly produced 10 scaffolds (1 per chromosome) with a total length of 862 Mb and only ∼1% gap content. These results confirm previous observations that S. conica and its relatives have a reduced base chromosome number relative to the genus's ancestral state of 12. Silene conica …
Libertarianism And The Common Law, Allen Mendenhall
Libertarianism And The Common Law, Allen Mendenhall
Belmont Law Review
What are the qualities and characteristics of the common law that feature or reflect libertarianism? The common law is both a historical phenomenon and an active process or a juridical mode of settling disputes. Therefore, a precise answer to questions about the compatibility between libertarianism and the common law is difficult to articulate. This Essay describes elements of the common law - both its manifestation in history and its theoretical approaches to judging - that illuminate its libertarian attributes and tendencies. It suggests that the common law has epistemological importance as a kind of bottom-up ordering based on traceable patterns …
Identification Of Significant Gene Expression Changes Incorporating Heterogeneity In Perturbation Experiments, Katharine Cross
Identification Of Significant Gene Expression Changes Incorporating Heterogeneity In Perturbation Experiments, Katharine Cross
Honors Projects in Biological and Biomedical Sciences
Machine learning methods have been widely applied to the field of genomics and bioinformatics. Specifically utilizing novel machine learning algorithms to study gene-drug interactions has the potential to make a major positive impact on new drug discovery. It is possible that heterogeneity may exist within Vorinostat drug perturbation experiments due to the effects of the perturbations on the gene expressions. Thus, the challenge is to identify the most important genes in a high-dimensional setting while first identifying subpopulations to address population heterogeneity. In this work, clustering techniques are applied to first identify group sub-population structures in the gene expression changes …
