Structural And Biological Characterization Of Two Freshwater Mussel Shells (Bivalvia: Unionidae), Hülya Şerefli̇şan Nov 2023

Structural And Biological Characterization Of Two Freshwater Mussel Shells (Bivalvia: Unionidae), Hülya Şerefli̇şan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The shell of a freshwater mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) is a composite biological material that plays an active role in maintaining ecosystem services. Mussel shells have variable structures both within and between species. In this study, the structural and biological characteristics of the shells of Potomida semirugata and Leguminaia wheatleyi were investigated in order to use freshwater mussel shells as a biological material. Close observation of the microstructure of the shells of the two common freshwater bivalves revealed a variation in construction from the outer periostracum to the inner nacreous layer. In P. semirugata, a polygonal arrangement with columnar prisms …

The Functions Of Oligodendrocyte Lineage-Derived Laminins Under Homeostatic And Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke Conditions, Minkyung Kang Nov 2023

The Functions Of Oligodendrocyte Lineage-Derived Laminins Under Homeostatic And Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke Conditions, Minkyung Kang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Oligodendrocyte lineage is a glial cell population in the central nervous system. The lineage starts with oligodendrocyte precursor cells, which differentiate and mature into mature oligodendrocytes. Myelination, the major function of mature oligodendrocytes, plays a significant role for normal function of the central nervous system, and its dysfunction leads to many demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. During the lineage progression, an extracellular matrix protein, laminin, actively regulates the cells' biology, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and myelination. However, the cellular sources of the laminin that controls oligodendrocyte lineage cells remain largely unknown. Interestingly, previous studies have shown that oligodendrocyte lineage …

Utilizing Binding-Based Proteomic Profiling And Mass Spectrometry Imaging As Innovative Tools For Lipid Research, Suzeeta Bhandari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mass spectrometry-based omics research involves global identification and quantification of molecules in the biological system, which can form the basis of the multi-omics approach integrating multiple layers of information to provide a comprehensive overview of systems biology. The investigation of fatty acid amides (FAA) is one such research avenue that benefits significantly from the high-throughput, multi-level, and interdisciplinary approach of integrative omics. Currently, FAA research is dominated by lipidomic-based studies that have successfully identified and quantified >100 different FAAs in different model systems. Few studies are credited with exploring the biological function and evolution of FAA-dependent signaling pathways. Previous literature …

Interdependency Between Water And Road Infrastructures: Cases And Impacts, Shihab Uddin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies the interdependency between road and water infrastructures and associated interdependency impact on these two critical infrastructure systems. Critical infrastructures and the interdependency among these infrastructures have gained much attention recently because of its growing complexity, importance, and vulnerability to natural and man-made threats. In response, researchers have spent significant effort to study these infrastructures individually as well as when they are interdependent to understand complex interdependency relationship and to figure out ways to make these infrastructures more reliable, robust, and resilient. However, water and road infrastructure systems have not been studied as vastly as other critical infrastructures …

Evaluating The Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates Using The Reveals Model: A Case Study From The Cultural Landscape In Shandong, China, Furong Li, Marie José Gaillard, Siqi Xie, Qiaoyu Cui, Ralph Fyfe, Laurent Marquer, Shinya Sugita Nov 2023

Evaluating The Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates Using The Reveals Model: A Case Study From The Cultural Landscape In Shandong, China, Furong Li, Marie José Gaillard, Siqi Xie, Qiaoyu Cui, Ralph Fyfe, Laurent Marquer, Shinya Sugita

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) is regarded as the soundest approach for quantifying taxon-specific plant cover from pollen data. The reliability of relative pollen productivity (RPP) estimates is fundamental in the accuracy of quantitative vegetation reconstruction using the LRA approach. Inconsistent RPP estimates produced by different studies can cast doubt on the reliability and applicability of quantitative vegetation reconstruction. Therefore, it is crucial that the RPP estimates are evaluated before being applied for quantitative vegetation reconstruction. We have tested two alternative approaches, namely, a leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO) method and a splitting-by-subregion strategy, using surface pollen assemblages and the REVEALS model—the …

In Situ Tuning And Investigating The Growth Process Of Size Controllable Gold 2 Nanoparticles And Statistical Size Prediction Analysis, Vinayak Sharma Nov 2023

In Situ Tuning And Investigating The Growth Process Of Size Controllable Gold 2 Nanoparticles And Statistical Size Prediction Analysis, Vinayak Sharma

Articles

A critical understanding of the formation and growth process of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is crucial, in order to synthesize monodisperse gold nanocrystals of controllable size and shape in a predictable way. GNPs of different shapes and sizes can be produced by altering different physicochemical reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, and the ratio of reactants. The significant variations in the morphological features of GNPs can be monitored in situ in a time-dependent manner by using UV–visible spectroscopy. In this study, we have synthesized seedless GNPs by reduction of HAuCl4 by using various molar ratios of HEPES and Na2HPO4. The shape …

A Bio-Economic Modeling Analysis Of Livestock Grazing On Rangelands Utilizing A Supplementary Grazing Resource, Jessica L. Windh

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation is a compilation of 5 chapters culminating in a bioeconomic model of the interactions between an integrated crop-livestock system and native rangeland grazing system. The model is developed using data from the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska, a location where cropping systems of Eastern Nebraska border one of the last intact grasslands remaining in North America.

The first chapter introduces the reader to the systems that will be modeled in the dissertation. In Chapter 2 we used a linear regression to model grassland biomass production as a function of climatic variables; we were unsuccessful in modeling season-long production in …

Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz Nov 2023

Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz

Dissertations

The use of language interpreters in the health care setting constitutes a vital part of provider-patient communication but remains a relatively unexplored phenomenon. Registered nurses (RNs) are often called upon to serve as interpreters when linguistically diverse patients constitute a large segment of the patient population. That RNs serve simultaneously in an interpreter role – in addition to clinical and advocacy roles – is a complex facet of contemporary nursing practice in a diverse U.S. culture. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the lived experience of RNs serving as interpreters in health care institutions in Southern …

Dysregulated Cd200-Cd200r Signaling In Early Diabetes Modulates Microglia-Mediated Retinopathy, Charles W Pfeifer, James T Walsh, Andrea Santeford, Joseph B Lin, Wandy L Beatty, Ryo Terao, Yizhou A Liu, Keitaro Hase, Philip A Ruzycki, Rajendra S Apte

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication of diabetes. Recent investigations have suggested that early degeneration of the neuroretina may occur prior to the appearance of microvascular changes; however, the mechanisms underlying this neurodegeneration have been elusive. Microglia are the predominant resident immune cell in the retina and adopt dynamic roles in disease. Here, we show that ablation of retinal microglia ameliorates visual dysfunction and neurodegeneration in a type I diabetes mouse model. We also provide evidence of enhanced microglial contact and engulfment of amacrine cells, ultrastructural modifications, and transcriptome changes that drive inflammation and phagocytosis. We show that CD200-CD200R …

Janus , A Spliceosome-Associated Protein, Promotes Mirna Biogenesis In Arabidopsis, Mu Li, Huihui Yu, Bangjun Zhou, Lu Gan, Shengjun Li, Chi Zhang, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs ( miRNAs ) are important regulators of genes expression. Their levels are precisely controlled through modulating the activity of the microprocesser complex ( MC ) . Here, we report that JANUS, a homology of the conserved U2 snRNP assembly factor in yeast and human, is required for miRNA accumulation. JANUS associates with MC components Dicer-like 1 ( DCL1 ) and SERRATE ( SE ) and directly binds the stem- loop of pri-miRNAs. In a hypomorphic janus mutant, the activity of DCL1, the numbers of MC, and the interaction of primary miRNA transcript ( pri-miRNAs ) with MC are reduced. …

Dynamic Regulation Of Store-Operated Calcium Entry By Protein S-Acylation, Goutham Kodakandla Nov 2023

Dynamic Regulation Of Store-Operated Calcium Entry By Protein S-Acylation, Goutham Kodakandla

Theses and Dissertations

Calcium plays a pivotal role in many physiological functions in cells. Cytosolic calcium levels are finely tuned by calcium ion channels, pumps, and intracellular organelles. Store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) is when depletion of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium stores activates a calcium sensor known as stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1). Activation of STIM1 leads to a conformational change from a compact state to an extended state. This extended state of STIM1 allows it to bind to a calcium channel in the plasma membrane (PM) known as Orai1. The binding of Orai1 and STIM1 leads to opening of Orai1 channels and calcium …

The Influence Of A Supplemental Mathematics Course To 9th Grade Algebra 1 Students In A Medium Suburban K-12 School District In New Jersey, Jacob Cavins

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Math performance became an increasing concern in the United States after the launch of Sputnik in 1957. This concern began with attempts to prescribe mathematical standards in the United States to improve student mathematics preparation. When the COVID pandemic began in 2020, policies on quarantining and remote learning were implemented, resulting in increased education gaps. The most contemporary NAEP report shows the first decline in math scores in the United States since the inception of the NAEP. Districts are looking for solutions. Districts are exploring intervention options, including Multi-Tiered Support Systems and Response to Intervention initiatives. They hope to reduce …
