Impact Of Dry Matter At Ensiling On Final Ph And Nutritive Value Of Mixed Cool-Season Haylage, Christopher D. Teutsch, A. E. Teutsch Nov 2023

Impact Of Dry Matter At Ensiling On Final Ph And Nutritive Value Of Mixed Cool-Season Haylage, Christopher D. Teutsch, A. E. Teutsch

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Harvesting hay as baleage can allow for more timely harvest, especially in spring months when curing conditions are not ideal. Forage conserved as baleage undergoes anaerobic fermentation in which the sugars are converted to lactic acid, lowering final pH. To successfully conserve forage as dry hay, moisture concentrations must be less than 18%. In contrast, the ideal moisture concentration for baleage is between 55 and 65%. There are a number of producers harvesting and wrapping hay that is not quite “dry enough” to bale but is too dry to ensile. This produces a product commonly referred to by producers as …

Cool-Season Perennials And Stability In Year-Round Forage Production Systems, C. D. Teutsch Nov 2023

Cool-Season Perennials And Stability In Year-Round Forage Production Systems, C. D. Teutsch

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Changes in long-term climate normals have resulted in warmer and wetter summers and milder winters in the humid eastern United States. This will likely impact regional forage species adaptation in the long-term and varietal adaptation in the short term. Variety evaluation has been occurring at the University of Kentucky for almost 100 years. There are several considerations for selecting forage species and varieties including regional and local adaptation, productivity, distribution of growth, palatability, nutritive value, anti-quality factors, tolerance to stress, and persistence. Two of the most important criteria are long-term productivity and persistence under grazing, both of which are currently …

Impact Of Fertilizer Type, Seeding Coating, And Duration Of Exposure On The Germination Of Red Clover Seed, C. D. Teutsch, Edwin L. Ritchey Nov 2023

Impact Of Fertilizer Type, Seeding Coating, And Duration Of Exposure On The Germination Of Red Clover Seed, C. D. Teutsch, Edwin L. Ritchey

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Legumes are important components in grassland ecosystems. Red clover is one the most used legumes in the transition zones states like Kentucky. To maintain legumes in grass pastures, improved red clover varieties are often overseeded in the late-winter or early-spring. In many cases seed is mixed with fertilizer and top-dressed onto pastures. Little data are available on the impact of fertilizer type or duration of exposure on the germination of raw and coated red clover seed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of two fertilizer types, muriate of potash and a blended fertilizer (urea, diammonium phosphate, …

Effect Of The Hydrological Keyline Design On The Growth And Quality Of The Naturalized Grassland In The Dry Central Zone Of Chile, P. Toro-Mujica Nov 2023

Effect Of The Hydrological Keyline Design On The Growth And Quality Of The Naturalized Grassland In The Dry Central Zone Of Chile, P. Toro-Mujica

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effect of climate change in the central, semi-arid zone of Chile has altered precipitation patterns, shortening the growing season of the naturalized annual grasslands and reducing forage yields. Water harvesting techniques such as the hydrological keyline design, may improve the distribution of precipitation, reduce erosion, and enhance soil water harvesting. It may therefore reduce the impact of climate change in rainfed areas. A trial was implemented to evaluate the effect of the keyline water harvesting practice on soil variables, and pasture production and quality in three farms of the semi-arid O'Higgins region. Rains began in April and amounted to …

Real-Time Arrhythmia Detection Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Thong Vu, Tyler Petty, Kemal Yakut, Muhammad Usman, Wei Xue, Francis M. Haas, Robert A. Hirsh, Xinghui Zhao

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and congestive heart failure, are the leading cause of death both in the United States and worldwide. The current medical practice for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases is not suitable for long-term, out-of-hospital use. A key to long-term monitoring is the ability to detect abnormal cardiac rhythms, i.e., arrhythmia, in real-time. Most existing studies only focus on the accuracy of arrhythmia classification, instead of runtime performance of the workflow. In this paper, we present our work on supporting real-time arrhythmic detection using convolutional neural networks, which take images of electrocardiogram (ECG) segments as input, and classify …

The Influence Of Grazing Systems On Bird Species Richness And Density In The Nebraska Sandhills, Silka L.F. Kempema, Walter H. Schacht, Larkin A. Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Grazing is the de facto method of habitat management used in much of the Nebraska Sandhills. Ranchers use a variety of grazing systems, and our goal was to evaluate the effects of systems on grassland birds. We estimated the species richness and density of grassland birds for three grazing systems used on private ranches: long, medium, and short duration grazing systems. We observed sixty species, and the grazing system with pastures utilizing long duration grazing periods had the highest estimates of species richness as well as the most heterogeneous habitat structure. Differences in species richness among systems were most pronounced …

"Operation Motivation" - Samuel Shepard Jr., Nicalee Stephens-Wilson Nov 2023

"Operation Motivation" - Samuel Shepard Jr., Nicalee Stephens-Wilson

Dissertations

African-American students have often faced systemic oppression and racial inequities as learners in the United States. Public schools in their communities lacked the resources to offer full access to a fair and equitable education. For years, human rights activists fought for radical changes in public schools. Finally, in 1954, the U. S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education ruled segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The Brown decision did not have the power to eliminate the long-established segregation practices. Nor did it grant access to educational equity for children of color. Dr. Samuel Shepard Jr. began his work in …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present a unique challenge to remediation techniques because their strong carbon−fluorine bonds make them difficult to degrade. This review explores the use of in silico enzymatic design as a potential PFAS degradation technique. The scope of the enzymes included is based on currently known PFAS degradation techniques, including chemical redox systems that have been studied for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) defluorination, such as those that incorporate hydrated electrons, sulfate, peroxide, and metal catalysts. Bioremediation techniques are also discussed, namely the laccase and horseradish peroxidase systems. The redox potential of known reactants and …

New Methods For Stereoselective Glycosylation In Application To Significant Biomedical Targets, Melanie L. Shadrick Nov 2023

New Methods For Stereoselective Glycosylation In Application To Significant Biomedical Targets, Melanie L. Shadrick

Dissertations

Glycosyl halides have been utilized for glycosylation reactions since the early studies by Arthur Michael, nearing the end of the 19th century. Koenigs and Knorr then utilized silver salts to activate glycosyl bromides and chlorides to create synthetic glycosides. Many efforts to improve the outcome of reactions with glycosyl halides have emerged. The key emphasis has traditionally been placed on reaction rates, product yields, and stereocontrol. Recently, our lab reported that silver(I) oxide-mediated Koenigs-Knorr glycosylation reaction can be dramatically accelerated in the presence of catalytic acid additives. Methods to improve glycosylation was explored using mannosyl and glucosyl bromides. However, …

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a leading cause of disease in feedlot and stocker calves with Mannheimia haemolytica (MH) as one of the most common etiologies. One of the most effective means of controlling BRD is through metaphylaxis, which involves administering antimicrobials to all animals at high risk of developing BRD. However, increasing prevalence of multidrug resistant (MDR) MH may reduce efficacy of metaphylaxis due to decreased susceptibility to drugs used for metaphylaxis. Primarily, this study aimed to determine the effect of tulathromycin metaphylaxis and subsequent BRD treatment on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in MH isolated from stocker calves. Secondary objectives …

The Contributions Of Mental Health Issues, Traumatic Brain Injury, And Adverse Childhood Experiences To Recidivism Among Rural Jail Incarcerees, Lauren N. Miley Nov 2023

The Contributions Of Mental Health Issues, Traumatic Brain Injury, And Adverse Childhood Experiences To Recidivism Among Rural Jail Incarcerees, Lauren N. Miley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recidivism should be a major concern, particularly for American jails. The Unites States incarcerates 2.3 million people, a number exceeding rates in any other country. Approximately 90% of those individuals will reenter society at some point, and roughly half of those people will ultimately return to jail. This revolving door costs U.S. taxpayers upwards of $39 billion per year, and undermines public safety. Therefore, breaking this cycle of incarceration and recidivism is of utmost concern, and the focus of this dissertation. Mental health problems, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are three potential risk factors for recidivism …

Enhanced Luminescence Efficiency In Eu-Doped Gan Superlattice Structures Revealed By Terahertz Emission Spectroscopy, Fumikazu Murakami, Atsushi Takeo, Brandon Mitchell, Volkmar Dierolf, Yasufumi Fujiwara, Masayoshi Tonouchi

Physics & Engineering Faculty Publications

Eu-doped Gallium nitride (GaN) is a promising candidate for GaN-based red light-emitting diodes, which are needed for future micro-display technologies. Introducing a superlattice structure comprised of alternating undoped and Eu-doped GaN layers has been observed to lead to an order-of-magnitude increase in output power; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we explore the optical and electrical properties of these superlattice structures utilizing terahertz emission spectroscopy. We find that ~0.1% Eu doping reduces the bandgap of GaN by ~40 meV and increases the index of refraction by ~20%, which would result in potential barriers and carrier confinement within a superlattice …

Teaching The Equivalent Rectangular Stress Block, J. Chris Carroll, Ben Dymond, Anahid Behrouzi

Architectural Engineering

The equivalent rectangular stress block is the basis for determining the flexural strength of reinforced concrete members. Instructors commonly present the concept in two dimensions, contrary to its three-dimensional nature. Unfortunately, this can be particularly difficult for students to understand and visualize, especially for students with visual learning style preferences. This paper presents an overview of the equivalent rectangular stress block, select active learning methods, and four specific examples used by the authors to introduce the equivalent rectangular stress block in an undergraduate reinforced concrete design course. The first method focuses on understanding the terms associated with the equivalent rectangular …
