Flow Electrode Capacitive Deionization Using Mxene Suspension Electrodes For Energy Efficient Water Remediation, Naqsh E. Mansoor
Flow Electrode Capacitive Deionization Using Mxene Suspension Electrodes For Energy Efficient Water Remediation, Naqsh E. Mansoor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The growing global demand for clean water, coupled with increasing concerns around aquatic pollution, necessitate the development of high performing and energy-efficient technologies for wastewater remediation. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) has emerged as a promising electrochemical method for desalination and removal of contaminants from various water sources. Despite its potential, CDI faces a significant bottleneck concerning the selection and optimization of suitable electrode materials. The choice of electrode materials critically influences the performance and efficiency of the CDI system, with the quest for an ideal material remaining a challenging and ongoing research endeavor. This dissertation explores potential of using MXene materials …

Impacts Of Environmental Stressors On Native South Dakota Amphibian Physiology And Survival, Danielle Jean Galvin
Impacts Of Environmental Stressors On Native South Dakota Amphibian Physiology And Survival, Danielle Jean Galvin
Dissertations and Theses
Amphibian populations around the world are declining, with some of the most likely drivers behind these declines including emerging infectious diseases and environmental contaminants. To address major gaps in the current literature, I sought to evaluate the effect of two major environmental stressors on various aspects of amphibian physiology: emerging infectious diseases and environmental contaminants. Emerging infectious diseases of amphibians include fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens which have expanded in host range, either geographically or in competent host species. Environmental contaminants include chemicals which may be naturally occurring in the environment, or which may be introduced to the environment, often …
Wake Up America: Conceptualizing The Social Determinants Of Sleep, Nicole Eve Bray
Wake Up America: Conceptualizing The Social Determinants Of Sleep, Nicole Eve Bray
Masters Theses
This paper is an attempt to understand racial, ethnic and gender disparities in sleep as a sociological problem. Public health and sociological researchers have looked at the connection between sleep disparities among minorities and the impact it has on health. However, they haven’t explained and applied the social structural factors that cause these disparities, as well as address how stress can serve as a moderator. In my investigation, I found that sleep troubles differ across race, ethnicity and gender. These differences relate to the distinguishable life situations of women and minorities in American society, such as stressful life circumstances that …
The Private Pilot Check Ride: Applying The Spacing Effect Theory To Predict Time To Proficiency For The Practical Test, Michael Scott Harwin
The Private Pilot Check Ride: Applying The Spacing Effect Theory To Predict Time To Proficiency For The Practical Test, Michael Scott Harwin
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between a set of targeted factors and the total flight time students needed to become ready to take the private pilot check ride. The study was grounded in Ebbinghaus’s (1885/1913/2013) forgetting curve theory and spacing effect, and Ausubel’s (1963) theory of meaningful learning. The research factors included (a) training time to proficiency, which represented the number of training days needed to become check-ride ready; (b) flight training program (Part 61 vs. Part 141); (c) organization offering the training program (2- or 4-year college/university vs. FBO); (d) scheduling policy (mandated vs. student-driven); and demographical variables, which …
Climate Change And The Shifting Geography Of Coral-Reef Development, Victor Rodriguez-Ruano
Climate Change And The Shifting Geography Of Coral-Reef Development, Victor Rodriguez-Ruano
Theses and Dissertations
Coral-reef development is modulated by growth processes that deposit calcium carbonate onto the reef, such as calcification, and destructive processes that remove calcium carbonate from the reef, such as bioerosion. Wherever calcification rates exceed bioerosion rates, there is a net accretion of the reef through time, but where bioerosion rates exceed calcification rates, there is a net destruction of the reef through time. A reef’s framework is the legacy of the interaction of these processes throughout a reef’s history. Studying the fossil frameworks of reefs can shed light on the environmental factors that have controlled reef development in the past, …
The Relationship Between Biofouling Adhesion And Frequency Of Mechanical Cleaning To Control The Recruitment To Clear Coatings, Dylan Thomas Eggers
The Relationship Between Biofouling Adhesion And Frequency Of Mechanical Cleaning To Control The Recruitment To Clear Coatings, Dylan Thomas Eggers
Theses and Dissertations
There is a need to control biofouling on sensors and transparent windows in the marine environment. Clear silicone coatings offer a method to reduce the adhesion strength of marine organisms to the surface, however, these also require mechanical cleaning to maintain the surfaces free of fouling. This research evaluated the performance of eighty seven formulations and took the top two candidates to investigate a) the frequencies of wiping required by a brush to maintain two coatings and uncoated glass surfaces free of fouling and b) the effects of clear silicone coatings fouling release properties on required frequencies. The panels were …

Regulatory Mechanisms Of The Lbd40 Transcription Factor In Arabidopsis Thaliana Somatic Embryogenesis, Sanjay Joshi, Kristine Hill, Manohar Chakrabarti, Sharyn E. Perry
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a process by which an embryo is derived from somatic tissue. Transcription factors (TFs) have been identified that control this process. One such TF that promotes SE is AGAMOUS-like 15 (AGL15). Prior work has shown that AGL15 can both induce and repress gene expression. One way this type of dual function TF works is via protein interactions, so a yeast 2-hybrid (Y2H) screen was undertaken. One intriguing protein with which AGL15 interacted in Y2H was LBD40. LBD40 encodes a LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES (LOB)-domain TF that is unique to plants and is primarily expressed during seed development. …

The Emergence Of “The School Shooter” As A Category Of Analysis: What The 1990s Can Teach Us About Youth Violence, Rebecca Maria Jimenez
Honors College Theses
This thesis is a case study of the emergence and framing of “the school shooter” as one part of the larger problem of American youth violence during the 1990s. This decade forever changed the way school safety is viewed. Although the annual number of school shootings largely remained the same from the 1970s to the early 1990s, a spike in fatalities in 1993 occurred during a fraught historical moment. A wave of youth violence, beginning in the late 1980s, helped to set the stage for new security measures, such as zero tolerance policies in schools, and the development of new …

How Beavers (Castor Canadensis) Affect Habitat Availability For Two Native Oregon Turtles: Actinemys Marmorata And Chrysemys Picta Bellii, Rodé Krige
University Honors Theses
Oregon is home to two native freshwater turtle species: the northwestern pond turtle and the western painted turtle. Both turtles are Oregon conservation strategy species with a status rating of sensitive, indicating declining populations. Oregon's decline in these turtle's populations is thought to be predominantly due to loss and degradation of habitat that results from development and urbanization. Beavers' ability to dam streams and create ponds may be creating habitat usable by turtles, but the relationship is under-studied. This study assessed water temperature, basking habitat, and overall turtle habitat suitability at beaver-dammed and control ponds in Portland, Oregon. Average basking …

The Effects Of Salt Marsh Restoration On The Hydrology Of Salt Marsh Channels, Isis Kontas
The Effects Of Salt Marsh Restoration On The Hydrology Of Salt Marsh Channels, Isis Kontas
University Honors Theses
Salt marshes produce many ecosystem services, from water purification to protection from hurricanes. Despite their benefits, salt marshes have been impacted negatively by human activities. There are many salt marsh restoration projects that intend to bring back all ecological functions and services. Quantifiable measurements are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of such restoration efforts. Earlier work by Reagan Thomas demonstrated what happens to the hydrology of salt marsh channels when they are adjacent to restored salt marshes. This study builds on Thomas’ work and uses the sinuosity of channels as a quantitative, representative metric of salt marsh hydrology restoration effectiveness. …
Economic Analysis Of Population-Based Next Generation Sequencing For Breast Cancer, Sapphire Curelaru
Economic Analysis Of Population-Based Next Generation Sequencing For Breast Cancer, Sapphire Curelaru
University Honors Theses
Breast cancer develops due to accumulated DNA replication insults which causes cancer to uncontrollably proliferate. An individual's predisposition to developing cancer, as well as the composition of a tumor, can be sequenced using genetic tests. Myriad's BRACAnalysis CDx® seems to be the most utilized genetic test. However, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) seems to be a better genetic test for breast cancer when compared to Myriad's BRACAnalysisCDx® in terms of return-time, accuracy, efficiency, and healthcare cost. By using Next Generation Sequencing tests, stakeholders can save money on genetic testing which can be invested in more genetic tests. Payers can …

PURPOSE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a rising global prevalence. However, the understanding of its impact on mortality remains inconsistent so we explored the association between IBD and all-cause and cause-specific mortality.
METHODS: This study included 502,369 participants from the UK Biobank, a large, population-based, prospective cohort study with mortality data through 2022. IBD was defined by baseline self-report or from primary care or hospital admission data. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality in multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models.
RESULTS: A total of 5799 (1.2%) participants had a history of …
Development Of Novel Methods To Study Host-Microbe Interactions In The Larval Zebrafish Gastrointestinal Tract, Anh K. Trinh Nguyen
Development Of Novel Methods To Study Host-Microbe Interactions In The Larval Zebrafish Gastrointestinal Tract, Anh K. Trinh Nguyen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The dynamic nature and inaccessible location of the intestine pose significant challenges to the study of intestinal physiology and pathology. Zebrafish larvae, possessing optical transparency and genetic tractability, offer an accessible and clinically relevant model for investigating dynamic events in the intestine via time-lapse imaging. In the first part of this work, I discuss our efforts to optimize the parameters of a foodborne infection assay using paramecia as a vehicle. This method provides an effective, high-throughput alternative to infection via immersion or oral gavage, and replicates the most common route of transmission of gastrointestinal (GI) infection in humans. The foodborne …
Telomeric Regulation Of Chromosomal Instability In Colorectal Cancer, Kyle Labella, Kyle A Labella
Telomeric Regulation Of Chromosomal Instability In Colorectal Cancer, Kyle Labella, Kyle A Labella
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Telomere dysfunction drives chromosomal instability (CIN) during the transition from benign adenoma to malignant adenocarcinoma. While CIN provides a mutator mechanism for cancer-relevant genomic events, its role in shaping tumor biology during carcinogenesis is not well understood. Here, we explored the molecular and biological impact of telomere dysfunction and associated CIN in vivo in a faithful model of CRC. In vivo lineage tracing revealed that CIN increased neoplastic cell competition and clonal expansion through accelerated differentiation of neighboring stem cells, resulting in increased number of adenomas and decreased survival in CIN-high Apcmin mice. Mechanistically, CIN represses EZH2 leading to …
Role Of The Immune System In The Modulation Of The Mmr-Deficient Intestinal Stem Cell Niche, Shepard Conner
Role Of The Immune System In The Modulation Of The Mmr-Deficient Intestinal Stem Cell Niche, Shepard Conner
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Mismatch Repair (MMR) is a crucial DNA repair system to maintain genomic integrity in cells that is integrated by specific genes including MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2. These genes play a critical role in repairing errors that occur in base pairing by stabilizing the genetic material. When the MMR system fails to correct those errors, MMR deficiency occurs where monoallelic mutations in the MMR genes result in a condition known as Lynch Syndrome (LS). LS makes up approximately 3% of all colorectal cancer (CRC) and is regarded as a hereditary form of CRC, which progresses from MMR-deficient …
Development Of A Remote Dosimetric Audit Framework For Carbon Therapy, Paige Taylor
Development Of A Remote Dosimetric Audit Framework For Carbon Therapy, Paige Taylor
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Carbon ion therapy is available at over a dozen institutions around the world and is being employed for treatment of cancer. The increased biological effect of carbon compared to conventional photon-based radiotherapy holds promise for the therapeutic benefit in historically radioresistant tumors. While ion chamber dosimetry has been used for day-to-day clinical measurements of absorbed dose, there are few options for remote dosimetry. The availability of such tools would support the development of a robust remote audit program for carbon ion therapy.
The Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) conducts remote audits of photon and proton therapy. These audits are …
Downregulation Of Mir-10a-5p As A Potential Therapeutic Target To Improve The Detrimental Effects Of Post-Stroke Social Isolation, Patrick Mooz
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Introduction
Social isolation is detrimental to health. Isolation and loneliness are linked to all-cause mortality and accelerated disease progression in patients with cancer, dementia, and vascular disease. The number of individuals that live alone is increasing in our society, especially in the elderly, and loneliness and isolation represent a profound growing public health challenge. Previous studies have found that the detrimental effects of social isolation can be recapitulated in animal models. Mice that are socially isolated (SI) prior to an experimental stroke have larger infarcts and significantly worse outcomes. Importantly, animals that remain pair housed (PH) when an experimental stroke …

A Signal To Divide: Apoptotic Extracellular Vesicles As Carriers Of Mitogenic And Immunogenic Signals, Safia Essien, Safia Essien
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Efficient replacement of dead cells in epithelial tissue is crucial for maintaining barrier function and tissue homeostasis. Apoptotic cells can signal to neighboring cells to stimulate proliferation and compensate for cell loss and maintain overall cell numbers in normal physiology and cancer. While dying cells can transmit instructive cues to neighboring cells, the molecular mechanisms that induce cell division are not well understood. Recent evidence suggests that apoptotic bodies (ABs) or apoptotic extracellular vesicles (AEVs) mediate cell-to-cell communication and carry diverse biologically active cellular cargo which can influence cell proliferation. This dissertation visualizes and characterizes AEVs in larval zebrafish and …
A Novel Ngs Assay To Detect Any Kmt2a Fusion Transcript At Low Levels, Ghayas Issa
A Novel Ngs Assay To Detect Any Kmt2a Fusion Transcript At Low Levels, Ghayas Issa
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Measurable residual disease (MRD) detection is associated with cancer relapse. Leukemias with rearrangement of the lysine methyltransferase 2 A gene (KMT2Ar) have an adverse prognosis with more than 80 possible fusion partner genes (FPG) identified. With the advent of effective targeted therapies for KMT2Ar leukemia such as menin inhibitors, there is an unmet need for sensitive assays to detect these various fusions. Standard next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods cannot accurately detect genetic alterations at low frequencies because of inherent technical errors and the need for high sequencing depth. Blocker Displacement Amplification (BDA) technology enables selective detection of such rare …
Single Cell Proteogenomics Analysis Of Aml Samples Treated With Decitabine And Venetoclax Reveals Divergent Treatment Escape Mechanisms, Yi June Kim
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Venetoclax is a small molecule inhibitor targeting BCL-2. Since its approval, the combination therapy of hypomethylating agents and Venetoclax (HMA+Ven) has become a standard of care for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients unfit for intensive chemotherapy. Nonetheless, clinical challenges persist as patients either do not respond or eventually relapse, and the underlying mechanisms of these outcomes are not yet fully understood. Prior studies have identified genetic factors (TP53 and RTK/RAS pathway mutations) and phenotypic factors (monocytic differentiation) to be associated with resistance. In this light, we hypothesized that integrative assessment of genetic and phenotypic factors could further elucidate the unknown …

The evidence-based treatment (EBT) movement has primarily focused on core intervention content or treatment fidelity and has largely ignored practitioner skills to manage interpersonal process issues that emerge during treatment, especially with difficult-to-treat adolescents (delinquent, substance-using, medical non-adherence) and those of color. A chief complaint of "real world" practitioners about manualized treatments is the lack of correspondence between following a manual and managing microsocial interpersonal processes (e.g. negative affect) that arise in treating "real world clients." Although family-based EBTs share core similarities (e.g. focus on family interactions, emphasis on practitioner engagement, family involvement), most of these treatments do not have …

A Double-Robust Test For High-Dimensional Gene Coexpression Networks Conditioning On Clinical Information, Maomao Ding, Ruosha Li, Jin Qin, Jing Ning
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
It has been increasingly appealing to evaluate whether expression levels of two genes in a gene coexpression network are still dependent given samples' clinical information, in which the conditional independence test plays an essential role. For enhanced robustness regarding model assumptions, we propose a class of double-robust tests for evaluating the dependence of bivariate outcomes after controlling for known clinical information. Although the proposed test relies on the marginal density functions of bivariate outcomes given clinical information, the test remains valid as long as one of the density functions is correctly specified. Because of the closed-form variance formula, the proposed …
Analyzing Extracellular Vesicles For Disease Monitoring In Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients, Vahid Bahrambeigi
Analyzing Extracellular Vesicles For Disease Monitoring In Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients, Vahid Bahrambeigi
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Metastases are the main cause of cancer-related death, and the most frequent metastatic sites in patients with CRCs are liver and lung. To confirm the diagnosis of metastatic CRC (mCRCs) and to classify mCRCs, tumor biopsy of a suspected metastasis is often required. The consensus molecular subtype (CMS) classification which is based on gene expression profiles of CRC tumor specimens, is a predictive factor for treatment outcomes of standard chemotherapies for mCRCs. The practicality of repeated tumor biopsies for disease monitoring in mCRC patients is …
Genomic Characterization Of Adolescent And Young Adult Cancers: Investigation Of Ewing Sarcoma Susceptibility And Chornobyl Thyroid Tumors, Olivia Lee
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancers, diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 39, can exhibit distinctive genetic and molecular characteristics. Reported epidemiologic findings and treatment outcomes based on pediatric and adult cancer studies are often not suitable for application to the AYA population, underscoring the need for more thorough genomic research. Advances in sequencing technologies have enabled comprehensive analyses of complex genomic characteristics of AYA cancers, crucial for understanding the underlying biology of these malignancies. Here, I have utilized advanced sequencing techniques and integrated analytic approaches to describe important genomic features in two different AYA cancer types: Ewing Sarcoma …
Oncogenic Kras And Telomere Biology In Crc Progression, Ronald Depinho
Oncogenic Kras And Telomere Biology In Crc Progression, Ronald Depinho
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
While colorectal cancer (CRC) patients diagnosed with localized stage disease (as defined by SEER) have a 5-year survival rate of 90%, this rate plunges to 14% for patients diagnosed with metastatic CRC. Consequently, there is an immediate imperative to elucidate the mechanisms that drive the transition to advanced CRC.
Human CRCs carrying oncogenic mutations in the KRAS oncogene, henceforth referred to as KRAS*, exhibit a 25% higher propensity for developing liver metastases. Similarly, in our CRC mouse model, engineered with an inducible Kras* transgene and conditional null alleles of Apc and Tp53 (referred to as iKAP), KRAS* has been …
