An Exploration Of Mhealth Applications Usage Among Older Adults: A Mixed Methods Study, Francine N. Sutton
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This study examines the technology and appointment scheduling habits of older adults over the age of 55 through an exploratory sequential three phase mixed methods study. Phase One of this study examined features of ten existing mHealth applications through a qualitative content analysis, then a mHealth wireframe was developed from the app to replicate in addition to a redesigned version. Phase Two of the study was a thirty-four questions survey with 40 participants that inquired about their background with appointment scheduling, prior experience with technology, and demographics. After that, the mHealth applications were revised into two mHealth application prototypes. Lastly, …

I Am Not A Hero: Heroic Action Divorces The Hero From The Political Community, Ari Kohen, Brian Riches, Andre Sólo
I Am Not A Hero: Heroic Action Divorces The Hero From The Political Community, Ari Kohen, Brian Riches, Andre Sólo
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Most people who perform a heroic act will, afterward, deny that their actions were heroic and claim that anyone would have done the same, even though that is demonstrably false (and, often, others were present who failed to act heroically at all). The literature on the psychology of heroism has never investigated why this is. This theoretical paper proposes an answer and seeks to provoke exploration of a previously unexplored topic. We note that people who undertake heroic action face a unique conflict: they embody their community’s highest values, while simultaneously breaking norms to stand apart from that community. We …
Determining The Prevalence Of Salmonella In Wild And Domesticated Bison, Mark Figueroa
Determining The Prevalence Of Salmonella In Wild And Domesticated Bison, Mark Figueroa
CURE Proceedings
Salmonella is a widespread pathogen that can cause gastrointestinal tract infections in humans. Infections in humans can occur through the increased consumption of bison. Bison intestines can be reservoirs, therefore intestinal microbiome may be an important factor in Salmonella colonization. This project aims to determine the prevalence of Salmonella from different managements and unravel potential risks associated with pathogen spread. Bison fecal samples were collected seasonally from four sites for two years. These samples were incubated in R-10 broth for 48 hours followed by TTB broth for another 48 hours at 37⁰C. The broth was then spread onto BG and …

Don Griffin And The Early Days Of Cognitive Ethology, Gordon M. Burghardt
Don Griffin And The Early Days Of Cognitive Ethology, Gordon M. Burghardt
Animal Sentience
Carolyn Ristau’s trilogy provides a comprehensive account of Donald Griffin’s life and work, with the third volume focusing on cognitive ethology. This commentary focuses primarily on my own interactions with Don, particularly during my sabbatical at Rockefeller University when his campaign for cognitive ethology was gaining momentum. I recount my research on reptile behavior and cognition, my collaboration with Don and others at RU, and my role in advancing his ideas while contextualizing them within 19th-century comparative psychology. I also discuss developments in cognitive ethology, including critical anthropomorphism, the challenges of integrating subjective experience into behavioral science, and Griffin’s lasting …

Other Perspectives On Animals, Their Sentience And Cognition, Joyce M. D'Silva Mrs
Animal Sentience
For those of us who work to achieve legal recognition that animals are sentient beings, and should in many cases be allotted personhood, Donald Griffin is indeed an inspiration and a true game-changer. He put paid to the narrow behaviourist interpretation of animals’ lives promoted by Skinner et al. He became a real heir to Darwin’s belief in animal emotions. He enabled campaigners for animal welfare and indeed animal rights to quote his work as a distinguished scientist to give gravitas to their calls for legal recognition and protection of animals.
An Individuals-Oriented Approach To Conservation, Kristy M. Ferraro
An Individuals-Oriented Approach To Conservation, Kristy M. Ferraro
Animal Sentience
Individual cognitive and emotional differences in personality among animals, along with differences in their behavioral traits, are increasingly important in conservation efforts. It is not only more effective but more ethical to take both collective and individual perspectives into account in both research and practice.
Wildlife Conservation And Adaptation To Humans, Valeria Mazza Phd, Claudio Carere
Wildlife Conservation And Adaptation To Humans, Valeria Mazza Phd, Claudio Carere
Animal Sentience
For many animal species, the ability to adapt to coexistence with the human species and to the environmental changes that humans cause is a biological imperative. This adaptive capacity varies not only between species, but within species. Studying individual differences in animals’ behavioral, cognitive and physiological adaptability is important for integrating ethology and conservation. Findings about animal cognitive capacities, including learning, need to be applied in conservation—but humans need to be educated about ethology, coexistence and conservation too.

(Wp 2024-01) Douglass North, New Institutional Economics, And Complexity Theory, John B. Davis, Mauro Boianovsky
Economics Working Papers
Douglass North was central to the emergence of New Institutional Economics. Less well known are his later writings where he became interested in complexity theory. He attended the second economics complexity conference at the Santa Fe Institute in 1996 on how the economy functions as a complex adaptive system, and in his 2005 Understanding the Process of Economic Change incorporated this thinking into his argument that market systems depend on how institutions evolve. North also emphasized in the 2005 book the role belief played in evolutionary processes, and drew on cognitive science, especially the famous ‘scaffolding’ idea of cognitive scientist …
Placebo Trials: A New Tool To Discourage Wrongful Convictions Caused By Jury Error, Hayley Stillwell
Placebo Trials: A New Tool To Discourage Wrongful Convictions Caused By Jury Error, Hayley Stillwell
Faculty Articles
Despite the foundational principle in the American criminal justice system that it is better to acquit the guilty than to convict the innocent, wrongful convictions remain a persistent issue. Wrongful convictions are sometimes caused by flawed evidence, such as eyewitness misidentifications and unreliable forensic techniques. Researchers and scholars have studied this problem of flawed evidence extensively, leading to many successful reform efforts to address this portion of the wrongful conviction problem. But there is another portion of the wrongful conviction problem that has yet to be the target of reform efforts—wrongful convictions caused by juror error. Implicit biases, forbidden assumptions, …
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Urban Stream Syndrome On Macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Diversity And Organic Matter Processing In Streams, Helena Loucas
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
The relationship between macroinvertebrate functional diversity and environmental processes is connected in streams. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are specialized feeders, falling into five functional feeding groups which affect processes such as the decomposition of organic matter. Urbanization causes the degradation of streams in a process is known as the Urban Stream Syndrome, and can result in increased concentrations of contaminants, altered stream morphology, and reduced taxonomic richness. The reduction of taxonomic richness increases the abundance of tolerant species, altering functional feeding groups, which will affect ecosystem processes within the stream. My proposed study seeks to determine the effects of urbanization on ecosystem …

Sounds Marks, Deborah Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee
Sounds Marks, Deborah Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee

A lion roars just before a film rolls. A doughboy giggles. A giant green man laughs a hearty, “Ho, Ho, Ho.” These iconic sounds are all federally registered as trademarks. They identify specific brands and distinguish their products and services from the competition. Human brains treat sounds like these as categorization tools and cognitive shortcuts—ideal trademark symbols. But what about the sounds your favorite toys or electronic devices make? Or those made by a fictional character in the latest block- buster? This Article tackles these issues and others. We push back against the widely-held belief that all unconventional trade-marks—product designs, …
Study Of Microalgae Biofixation With Bacteria Carbonic Anhydrase For Carbon Capture And Utilization, Chan Cho Yin
Study Of Microalgae Biofixation With Bacteria Carbonic Anhydrase For Carbon Capture And Utilization, Chan Cho Yin
Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering
Climate change has been significantly affecting human activities due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Biofixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been investigated to reduce the atmospheric CO2 level and slow the rapid increase in the global temperature. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) can be performed by either physio-chemical or biological methods. The latter takes place in ambient temperature and mild conditions, such that there is no need for high pressure and high energy consumption nor hazardous chemicals. Biofixation by microalgae has been utilized to capture CO2 and the microalgae biomass collected after the process can …

Workplace Bullying In Louisiana Academic Libraries: Exploring Worker Status And Demographics, Justin Savage, Andrea Hebert, Catherine Baird
University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works
Bullying is a phenomenon that exists across cultures, societies, and even species. It can be found eveywhere, including the workplace. The present study investigates workplace bullying amongst an approximated census sample of Louisiana academic library workers. Using the Negative Acts Questionnaire—Revised (NAQ-R), the study explores the relationships between experiencing workplace bullying and librarian status, tenure status, years in the profession, age, gender, and race. Although no statistically significant relationships were found between variables, the findings add to a growing body of literature that explores the interrelations of demographic and environmental contexts and bullying experiences.

We estimated the predictive value of rectal (bacterial sexually transmitted infection [bSTI]) pathogen detection for future HIV seroconversion among young adult sexual and gender minorities (YSGMs) assigned male at birth (AMAB).
Methods
Data were collected between March 2018 and August 2022 from RADAR, a longitudinal cohort study of YSGMs AMAB living in the Chicago metropolitan area (n = 1022). Rates of rectal bSTIs and the proportion of self-reported rectal bSTI symptoms are reported. We examined whether the presence of rectal bSTIs predicted HIV seroconversion using generalized estimating equations (GEEs).
Results
Participants tested reactive for rectal Mycoplasma genitalium (MGen), Neisseria …
Experiences Of Group Therapies In Community Settings From The Perspective Of People Given A Diagnosis Of “Personality Disorder” – A Systematic Literature Review And Thematic Synthesis, Roxanne Denny
School of Psychology Theses
There is increasing research into group therapies and group treatments are widely offered in services for people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. This review aims to explore service user experiences of psychological treatments offered in groups for the diagnosis of personality disorder in community settings. A systematic search of six databases yielded 16 qualitative research papers for inclusion in this review. Studies were critically appraised and analysed using thematic synthesis. The thematic synthesis identified three major themes: “expectations and reality of groups”, “barriers and facilitators” and “impact of groups”. Recommendations inform the establishment and facilitation of group treatments.
