Aquatic ecosystems - lakes, ponds and streams - are hotspots of biodiversity in the cold and arid environment of Continental Antarctica. Environmental change is expected to increasingly alter Antarctic aquatic ecosystems and modify the physical characteristics and interactions within the habitats that they support. Here, we describe physical and biological features of the peripheral 'moat' of a closed-basin Antarctic lake. These moats mediate connectivity amongst streams, lake and soils. We highlight the cyclical moat transition from a frozen winter state to an active open-water summer system, through refreeze as winter returns. Summer melting begins at the lakebed, initially creating an …

Measuring And Modelling Functional Moat Area In Perennially Ice-Covered Lake Fryxell, Antarctica, Michael S. Stone, Mark R. Salvatore, Hilary A. Dugan, Madeline E. Myers, Peter T. Doran

Faculty Publications

The perennially ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDVs), Antarctica, are an important reservoir of liquid water in an arid and largely frozen environment. During the austral summer, the margins of these ice covers melt, forming a “moat” of liquid water and thin ice, allowing exchange between lake waters and the atmosphere to occur and serving as an interface between lake, soil, and stream ecosystems. The size of these moats varies from year to year. Here, we have established the first published record of moat area changes at MDVs’ Lake Fryxell through time using manual traces of the moat …

Hydrologic reconstructions from North America are largely unknown for the Middle Miocene. Examination of fungal palynomorph assemblages coupled with traditional plant-based palynology permits delineation of local, as opposed to regional, climate signals and provides a baseline for study of ancient fungas. Here, the Fungi in a Warmer World project presents paleoecology and paleoclimatology of 351 fungal morphotypes from 3 sites in the United States: the Clarkia Konservat-Lagerstätte site (Idaho), the Alum Bluff site (Florida), and the Bouie River site (Mississippi). Of these, 83 fungi are identified as extant taxa and 41 are newly reported from the Miocene. Combining new plant-based …

Holocene Hydroclimate Stability In Three Lake Sediment Records From The Southeastern United States, Aubrey L. Hillman, Sumar B. Hart, Vann Smith, Sophie Warny

Faculty Publications

Many Holocene paleoclimate records from the southeastern United States (SE US) have limited chronological constraints and/or low sedimentation rates and consequently low resolution; this presents challenges in discerning the relative importance of synoptic–scale drivers of past hydroclimate. In this study we summarize three lake sediment records that are uniquely located to test hypotheses regarding the importance of the Pacific North American (PNA) pattern and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) over the last 5000 years. At Pigeon Marsh, Buck Pond, and Halls Pond, we used sedimentological (radiocarbon dating of transect cores), physical (grain size), geochemical (carbon and nitrogen ratios and isotopes), …

The Struggle For Eudaemonia: The Eugenics Movement In Psychology And Community Resistance In Connecticut, Eve Galanis

Academic Articles

Throughout the twentieth century, the eugenics movement dominated medical discourses in the state of Connecticut. From deportations, coerced institutionalizations and sterilizations, to proposed executions of people with mental illness, eugenic policies were deployed in an attempt to control and direct populations. The state collaborated with academic institutions like Yale University, and agencies like The Eugenics Record Office at Cold Spring Harbor, to endorse pseudo-scientific techniques of surveilling and administering bodies across intersecting lines of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, and citizenship status. This research examines the biopolitics of eugenics and the contest for economic, geographic, social, and ideological space. Using …

Whaling Logbooks: Colonial Knowledge Acquisition In The Pacific World, Aj Laird

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

Sometime in 1846, the cooper onboard the whaling bark Acushnet used the final pages of his sea journal to write up a list of the workers onboard the ship. The cooper, who was called Resolvid W. Bowles, appears ninth on his list, which he titled “Crew and Officers on Board Ship Acushnet Sailing from N.B. July 17th, 1845 - for the Pacific Ocean.” Bowles appears to have modeled this crew list off the official crew lists that were signed at the start of whaling voyages – a contract that both ensured the crew members’ share in profits from the whale …

Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke Jan 2024

Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke

Washington and Lee Law Review

Over the past forty years, affirmative action advocates have participated in a defensive campaign where they have admitted that affirmative action is a form of justified discrimination. This Article finds this a dangerous strategy because it allows for the practice of misguided beliefs about race and remedies for racism. When schools fail to fight the pernicious perception that affirmative action is a racial preference, they allow the bulk of society to participate in the belief that there are no other remedial justifications for affirmative action—like remedying an institution’s history of discrimination, or curing a school’s present and ongoing discrimination by …

The Violence Of Free Speech And Press Metaphors, Erin C. Carroll Jan 2024

The Violence Of Free Speech And Press Metaphors, Erin C. Carroll

Washington and Lee Law Review

Today, our free speech marketplace is often overwhelming, confusing, and even dangerous. Threats, misdirection, and lies abound. Online firestorms lead to offline violence. This Article argues that the way we conceptualize free speech and the free press are partly to blame: our metaphors are hurting us.

The primary metaphor courts have used for a century to describe free speech—the marketplace of ideas—has been linked to violence since its inception. Originating in a case about espionage and revolution, in a dissent written by Oliver Wendell Holmes, a thrice-injured Civil War veteran, the marketplace has been described as a space where competition …

Assessing State Invasive Species Schemes Through The Lens Of The Spotted Lanternfly, Susanna Clark Jan 2024

Assessing State Invasive Species Schemes Through The Lens Of The Spotted Lanternfly, Susanna Clark

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Invasive species have long presented an issue across the United States, and continue to do so. They have become more prevalent as the world has become more interconnected. Nonnative species are not always invasive, but many of them are. A somewhat recently introduced invasive species, the spotted lanternfly, has proven to be especially destructive and will put current invasive species laws to the test. The federal government does have some laws on the books regarding invasive species, but much of the legislation and subsequent regulations can be found at the state level. No two states have the same legal and …

Water Column Controls On Magnetic Mineral Formation And Preservation, Josephine Benson Jan 2024

Water Column Controls On Magnetic Mineral Formation And Preservation, Josephine Benson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Iron-bearing minerals in the sedimentary record are frequently used to reconstruct past depositional environments. This is accomplished through geochemical, magnetic, and mineralogical analyses placed in geological context. These interpretations, however, depend on our understanding of how iron minerals form in nature. To better understand the formation of magnetic iron minerals in redox-stratified depositional settings, the study of modern analogs is crucial to unraveling environmental context no longer available from geological deposits. In this study, I utilized four anoxic and sulfidic stratified lakes within a 100-mile radius to examine the effects of small variations in lake properties on magnetic mineral formation …

Understanding Data Through The Lens Of Topology, Quang Truong Jan 2024

Understanding Data Through The Lens Of Topology, Quang Truong

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Machine learning depends on the ability to learn insightful representations from data. Topology of data offers a rich source of information for constructing such representations, yet its potential remains under-explored by the broader machine learning community. This work investigates the power of applied topology through two complementary projects: Topological Message Passing with Path Complexes and Persistent Homology for Anomaly Detection. In the first project, we extend the topological message passing framework by introducing a novel approach centered on path complexes, where paths form the fundamental building blocks. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that this model generalizes existing topological deep learning and …

Research and studies that explore the first two years of college for female students who are majoring in computer science or computer science-related …

Past And Recent Anthropogenic Pressures Drive Rapid Changes In Riverine Fish Communities, Alain Danet, Xingli Giam, Julian D. Olden, Lise Comte Jan 2024

Past And Recent Anthropogenic Pressures Drive Rapid Changes In Riverine Fish Communities, Alain Danet, Xingli Giam, Julian D. Olden, Lise Comte

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Understanding how and why local communities change is a pressing task for conservation, especially in freshwater systems. It remains challenging because of the complexity of biodiversity changes, driven by the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of human pressures. Using a compilation of riverine fish community time series (93% between 1993 and 2019) across the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Australasia realms, we assessed how past and recent anthropogenic pressures drive community changes across both space and time. We found evidence of rapid changes in community composition of 30% per decade characterized by important changes in the dominant species, together with a 13% increase in total …

Characterization Of The Disease-Causing Mechanism Of Kif3b Mutations From Ciliopathy Patients, Jessica M. Adams, Caleb Sawe, Skye Rogers, Jordyn Reid, Ronith Dasari, Martin F. Engelke Jan 2024

Characterization Of The Disease-Causing Mechanism Of Kif3b Mutations From Ciliopathy Patients, Jessica M. Adams, Caleb Sawe, Skye Rogers, Jordyn Reid, Ronith Dasari, Martin F. Engelke

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

The heterodimeric kinesin-2 motor (KIF3A/KIF3B with accessory protein KAP3) drives intraflagellar transport, essential for ciliogenesis and ciliary function. Three point mutations in the KIF3B subunit have recently been linked to disease in humans (E250Q and L523P) and Bengal cats (A334T) (Cogné et al., Am. J. Hum. Genet., 2020, 106, 893–904). Patients display retinal atrophy and, in some cases, other ciliopathy phenotypes. However, the molecular mechanism leading to disease is currently unknown. Here, we used Kif3a−/−;Kif3b−/− (knockout) 3T3 cells, which cannot make cilia, to characterize these mutations. While reexpression of KIF3B(E250Q) and KIF3B(L523P) did not rescue ciliogenesis, reexpression …

A Systematic Review Of Adolescent Girls’ Perception Of Body Image And Self-Esteem Through Participatory Digital Storytelling Groups, Alecia R. Jones Jan 2024

A Systematic Review Of Adolescent Girls’ Perception Of Body Image And Self-Esteem Through Participatory Digital Storytelling Groups, Alecia R. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent girls face increased pressure to conform to societal standards. As social beings, adolescent girls gravitate to social media as an outlet for peer interaction, community, and validation. Research has found that at the critical age of adolescence, 12-18, girls experience appearance comparison on social media, which can lead to internalizing unrealistic beauty standards and negative self-appraisal. Digital storytelling emerges as a source of encouragement, providing a platform for empowerment, self-expression, community engagement, and a safe space for adolescent girls to share their body image and self-esteem experiences. This Systematic Review sought to synthesize findings of qualitative and mixed-methods studies …
