Optimizing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge For Biogas Production, Emma R. Murray
Optimizing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge For Biogas Production, Emma R. Murray
Honors College Theses
Food waste is a major contributor to municipal solid waste, and its disposal at landfills has significant environmental and economic impacts. Opportunities need to be identified for the sustainable management of food waste at large scales. Pulp and paper mills throughout the country commonly use anaerobic digestion to treat their waste sludge; however, this sludge can consist of over 50% lignin, which is slowly or negligibly digested. This research aims to explore the sustainability of co-digestion of food waste and paper mill sludge. Lab-scale studies were used to assess the feasibility of anaerobic digestion by measuring treatment efficiencies and biogas …
Zeckendorf Representation Analysis On Third Order Fibonacci Sequences That Do Not Satisfy The Uniqueness Property, Samuel A. Aguilar
Zeckendorf Representation Analysis On Third Order Fibonacci Sequences That Do Not Satisfy The Uniqueness Property, Samuel A. Aguilar
Honors College Theses
Zeckendorf's Theorem states that every natural number can be expressed uniquely as the sum of distinct non-consecutive terms of the shifted Fibonacci sequence (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 5, ...). This theorem has motivated the study of representation of integers by the sum of non-adjacent terms of Nth order Fibonacci sequences, including the characterization of the uniqueness of Zeckendorf representation based on the initial terms of the sequence. Moreover, when this uniqueness property is satisfied for third order Fibonacci sequences, the ratio of integers less than a given number X that have a Zeckendorf representation has been estimated by Dr. Sungkon …
Rescue From Hybrid Mortality In Nasonia Wasps Through An Interspecific Introgression, Samantha K. Mcginn
Rescue From Hybrid Mortality In Nasonia Wasps Through An Interspecific Introgression, Samantha K. Mcginn
Honors College Theses
Nasonia vitripennis and Nasonia giraulti are parasitoid wasps that use fly pupae as hosts to lay their eggs. These two species can produce hybrids when crossed together. However, hybrids are only partially viable and suffer 50-80% mortality from egg to adult development. The highest mortality occurs when N. giraulti females are used in the cross. Previous research shows that hybrids with an N. vitripennis allele of a mitochondrial-targeted gene within a specific locus on chromosome 5 have incompatible interactions with the N. giraulti mitochondria, which are maternally inherited. Collaborators at the University of Rochester have generated an introgression strain of …

Sun Damages And Preventative Measures For Keratinocyte Carcinomas, Alex Kandolin
Sun Damages And Preventative Measures For Keratinocyte Carcinomas, Alex Kandolin
Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
UV rays from the sun cause damage to our genomic DNA and in turn have the ability to cause cancer. Protection methods such as sunscreen have been used for many years, however, the introduction of polyphenols and topical creams have brought new hope to skin protection. Polyphenols are a new method using an internal approach that directly targets the damaged DNA using different mechanisms through food. When used in addition to sunscreen, the chances of skin cancer are greatly reduced. Additionally, but using topical cream such as 5-fluorouracil can be an approach to already existing lesions caused from UV radiation. …
Regulation Of Inflammatory Signaling By The Gut Microbiome, Caden Johnson
Regulation Of Inflammatory Signaling By The Gut Microbiome, Caden Johnson
Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
The human gut contains trillions of bacteria that play a key role in gastric homeostasis. Commensal bacteria play a critical role in the formation of the gastrointestinal barrier that prevents invasion of other pathogenic bacteria and also serves as a secondary metabolism system that aids in the synthesis of dietary fibers into many essential nutrients such as vitamins, sugars, and especially short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the anaerobic conditions in the large intestine. These SCFAs assist in regulating immune tolerance to commensal bacteria of the gut and promote an anti-inflammatory state important to lowering the incidence of inflammatory disorders …
Treatment-Related Adverse Effects In African Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review, Gabriel T. Fagbenro
Treatment-Related Adverse Effects In African Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review, Gabriel T. Fagbenro
Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
Treatment associated with cancer comes with serious adverse effects which affect patients’ physiological functioning, worsen financial toxicity, reduce quality of life, and increased risk of treatment discontinuation. There is dearth of evidence on prevalence and pattern of side effects among African patients receiving cancer-directed therapies. Primary research studies reporting side effects of non-surgical interventions among patients in African countries were selected for review. The most prevalent side effects included nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite (chemotherapy); radiation dermatitis and mucositis (radiation therapy); anaemia, neutropenia/febrile neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia (chemoradiation), and cardiotoxicity (immunotherapy). Oncologists need to pre-empt and provide necessary prophylactic and …

Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

Anti-Ableist And Disability Justice Pedagogies In Social Work Education, Rose C. B. Singh, Laura Yakas, Laura J. Wernick, Shanna K. Kattari, Elspeth Slayter, Sarah Taylor
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Our personal and collective experiences of ableism and disability brought us together to envision anti-ableist and disability justice pedagogies in social work education. We begin by describing, defining, and reviewing key terminology and concepts, including disability, ableism, and saneism, by drawing on social work and interdisciplinary literature and situating disabled students’ and educators’ experiences in social work education. We provide definitions of anti-ableism and disability justice (e.g., Sins Invalid, 2016, 2019) and a brief overview of how anti-ableism and disability justice have been articulated in social work and related literature. We highlight the broader pedagogical approaches that have inspired our …

Effects Of Internalized Stigma On Quality Of Life And Stress In Undergraduate Students With Chronic Health Conditions, Kevin R. Criswell Phd
Effects Of Internalized Stigma On Quality Of Life And Stress In Undergraduate Students With Chronic Health Conditions, Kevin R. Criswell Phd
Psychology Faculty Publications
Students with mental and/or physical chronic health conditions (CHCs) are at risk for diminished quality of life (QoL) and greater stress. Internalized stigma (the incorporation of a negative stereotype into one’s identity) may help explain this quality of life (QoL) and stress disparity. While prior work demonstrated that internalized stigma affects health outcomes, studies tend to examine single or small sets of outcomes, and studies of internalized stigma in students with mental and/or physical CHCs are sparse. The present study examined the effects of internalized stigma in three cohorts of students with mental and/or physical CHCs (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23; n …

An International Law Framework For Climate-Aligned Investment Governance, Martin Dietrich Brauch, Elena Klonsky, Fanny Marie Everard, Qiaozi Guanglin, Tyler Alviano, Justin Cuddihey, Mary Wang
Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment
The January 2024 CCSI Working Paper, An International Law Framework for Climate-Aligned Investment Governance, outlines a framework — and invites and hopes to inspire further thinking, research, and discussion — on how to bridge gaps and build cohesion among various areas of international law relevant to investment in climate mitigation and adaptation. The working paper identifies areas of international law that are or could be relevant to investment governance, highlights points of inconsistency, and proposes a framework to reform and integrate international law with the objective of promoting and facilitating climate investment flows and achieving climate-aligned regulation of investment.

Career Exploration Opportunities For Dp Students, Kelsey Chubb
International Professional Development Partnerships (IPDP) Consortium
This study examined the differences in American school systems at the high school level to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) . This study looked at student exposure to extensive amount of information on career clusters, future job options, and life pathways. Although core curriculum in United States schools such as mathematics, science, and English prepare students for common core assessments and state testing, high schools need to spend more time in career exploration for students tailored to their own interests. “A national survey commissioned by The Hunt Institute found that a solid majority of parents of school age …

A Science Teacher’S Experiences When Fostering Intercultural Competence Among Students In Multilingual Classrooms: A Narrative Study, Uma Ganesan, Amanda R. Morales
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Increased globalization of the world economy, growth in human migration, and rapid devel-opments in science and technology have required people to develop intercultural commu-nication skills. Teachers play a crucial role in developing intercultural competence among students in our globalized, multilingual classrooms. The need for fostering collaborative discourse among students with diverse cultural and linguistic repertoires and building in-tercultural competence among students is a common blind spot in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics teacher praxis. This can inhibit efforts to cultivate safe and supportive learning environments for all students and can ultimately threaten multilingual student success. As part of a larger …

Introduction: TPP Problem of Practice
Preparing Science Teachers for Teaching in Culturally Diverse Schools ● National average of 70% higher science teacher turnover in Title I versus non-Title I schools (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017). ● Mismatch between teacher and student demographics; national teacher workforce is overwhelmingly white (and female) and a student population that has become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. ● Longer, supervised teacher preparation internships have been linked to higher retention rates of new teachers (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017), but… with more science teachers retiring, there are also fewer master science teachers to mentor preservice teachers.

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Reform efforts in K–12 science education have been gaining pace ever since the introduction of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The new vision calls for reconsidering teacher preparation programs to prepare future teachers who are confident and competent in delivering NGSS-based instruction. This study investigated the development of 27 preservice secondary science and mathematics teachers’ (PSTs’) knowledge and skills as they understand, interpret, and implement the NGSS, particularly science and engineering practices (SEPs), within the context of microteaching during a STEM methods course. Primary data sources include 12 videos of 40-minute-long microteaching lessons, self-reflections, semistructured and focus-group interviews, and …
