According to transhumanists who urge the radical enhancement of human beings, humanity’s top priority should be engineering “posthumans,” whose features would include agelessness. Increasingly, transhumanism is critiqued on foundational grounds rather than based largely on anticipated results of its implementation, such as rising social inequality. This expansion is crucial but insufficient because, despite its radical aim, transhumanism reflects beliefs and attitudes that are evident in the broader culture. With a focus on the yearning to eliminate aging, I consider four of these: a disproportionate reliance on science and technology to address major human challenges; the conceptualization of human beings in …

Today, Fascism is on the rise around the world including, dismayingly, in the United States of America, threatening the rule of law, which is the basis of democracy. In the U. S. Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, has declared himself the standard bearer for authoritarian rule. If he wins, it is likely the United States will cease to be a democracy. If democracy is to survive, it is essential that citizens understand fascism, how it comes into existence, and what it does once it has taken root is essential. That is the reason for this reading list.

Coral disease is one of the biggest challenges facing coral reefs that actively changes biodiversity resulting in coral decline. With the rising threat of diseases, corals require biomarkers that reflect the immune systems and differences between common coral tissue loss diseases to best assist in coral restoration efforts. To obtain these biomarkers, my dissertation leverages two previously published datasets from two tissue loss disease exposure studies to investigate genes that are relevant for coral immune pathways, disease susceptibility, and classification between the diseases. TAV5 is a bacterium strain of the family Opitutaceae from Termite-Associated Verrucomicrobium isolated from the hindgut of Reticulitermes Flavipes, the most common subterranean termite in North America. The genome of TAV5 contains genes coding for enzymes that could structurally modify lignin.

Pulp & paper wastewater and Sugarcane bagasse contain high levels of cellulose (44-46%) and hemicellulose (27-32% ), as well as lignin (17-23%) which is recalcitrant to biodegradation. The lignin tend to shield the cellulose and hemicellulose making them inaccessible for biodegradation.

TAV5 can breakdown lignin, making the cellulose and hemicellulose accessible to microorganisms for biodegradation into methane generation for …

Drawing upon the work of Gloria E. Anzaldúa and Paul Ricoeur, this article presents a personal and scholarly reflection on the author’s multiethnic identity and how such identities may benefit youth ministry pedagogies and perspectives. The author explains Anzaldúa’s notion of nepantla alongside Ricoeur’s concepts of “narrative identity” and “social imaginary,” then demonstrates how these two thinkers’ perspectives can be interwoven and applied by educators and youth ministry practitioners. Ultimately, in sharing about his “mixed” heritage, the author contends that multiethnic individuals can serve as bridge-builders between cultures and generations.

The recently adopted BBNJ Agreement creates a multilateral framework for the establishment of Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs) in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction. Part of the process for establishing ABMTs under the new Agreement is the consultation of non-State actors (NSAs). ABMTs such as marine protected areas can negatively impact various NSAs, such as Indigenous Peoples that may rely on fishing in ABMTs for subsistence or cultural practices. Water quality varies along the stream network; thus, considering the directional, dendritic nature of stream networks with surrounding landscape variables is essential in explaining spatial variations of water quality. Using a spatially extensive stream temperature monitoring effort in the Clackamas River Basin in the United States, we first compare spatial scales of analysis of atmospheric, landscape, and in-stream explanatory variables through their correlation with summer stream temperatures. We then derive a predictive stream temperature model with factors representing the spatial variation of local climate, recent wildfire effects, and discharge. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 created a public health crisis that led to an unprecedented number of school closures. A major concern raised by child advocates, law enforcement, and social service providers was the possible increase in undetected child abuse and maltreatment. Undergirding this concern was the belief that this mitigation effort might place child abuse victims and offenders within proximity for extended periods of time. Epigenetic mechanisms are increasingly understood to have major impacts across ecology. However, one molecular epigenetic mechanism, DNA methylation, currently dominates the literature. A second mechanism, histone modification, is likely important to ecologically relevant phenotypes and thus warrants investigation, especially because molecular interplay between methylation and histone acetylation can strongly affect gene expression. There are a limited number of histone acetylation studies on non-model organisms, yet those that exist show that it can impact gene expression and phenotypic plasticity. This study sought to examine the relation between puberty and trauma symptomatology in young adults. More specifically, does it matter what developmental period one is in when trauma occurs? Additionally, geographical region was examined as it relates to receiving and reporting mental health services and later trauma symptoms. Using data from 362 students at Georgia Southern University, multiple analyses were conducted. A Moderation Analysis where adverse events served as the predictor, trauma symptomatology as the outcome variable, and the developmental period in which the trauma occurred as the moderator was conducted. The increase in the demand for additively manufactured parts and the drive towards a sustainable economy with less environmental pollution has necessitated the need for renewable materials for use in 3D printing. This study shows the development and characterization of vegetable oil based, acrylated resins for 3D printing. Bio-based 3D resins were formulated using bio-based oils with a minimum of 70% bio-based content and were ready to be polymerized using the stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing process. Two distinct vegetable oils were used to develop biobased photopolymers. Biobased acrylated epoxidized photopolymers were successfully developed that have good mechanical and chemical properties. …

Poly(aspartic acid) (PAA) has emerged as a biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternative to non- biodegradable polycarboxylates. This thesis aims to further advance the understanding of PAA degradation by exploring multiple facets focusing on PAA-DNA interactions, particularly those involving the enzyme PahZ1 from Pedobacter sp. KP-2, and to investigate their physiological relevance and potential role in the evolution of PAA biodegradation enzymes. Additionally, the research characterizes PahZ1 homologs from various bacterial species, including Brevifollis gellanilyticus, Erythrobacter insulae, Sphingomonadales, and Sphingopyxis sp. Root 1497. Parents, Paths, And Paychecks: Examining Intergenerational Occupational Mobility And Career Choices, Swapnil Landge

This paper examines the influence of fathers’ and mothers’ occupations on their children’s occupational outcomes, using a self-selection model to analyze intergenerational career mobility. By constructing and analyzing transition matrices, I estimate the extent of positive and negative self-selection for sons and daughters when they follow either their father’s or mother’s occupation. The results reveal distinct patterns for sons and daughters. Sons who follow their father’s occupation tend to avoid negative self-selection, particularly in higher-paying fields such as Professional Occupations and Technicians and Related Support Occupations, where negative self-selection is minimal. Conversely, sons following their mother’s occupation face higher rates …
