In this essay, I consider how we might retrofit property rights to meet modern urban and environmental challenges, which have foundationally rewritten property’s job description. The way forward requires attending to the beneficial services that resources provide, and to the central role of assembly (and reassembly) in generating and sustaining those service streams. To that end, I catalog a repertoire of “property moves” aimed at the moving target of resource optimization. While these moves can be pursued in limited ways within our current property framework, pursuing them in concert at scale requires ownership that is built for ongoing reconfiguration. I …

Turfgrasses under intensive management are often subject to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Diseases usually are most damaging when weather or cultural conditions favor the disease-causing agent but not plant growth and vigor. Cultural conditions that predispose turfgrass to diseases include close mowing, inadequate or excessive fertility, light or frequent irrigation, excessive thatch, poor drainage, and shade. Good turf management practices often greatly reduce the impact of disease by promoting healthy plants that are better able to resist infections. Even under good management, however, diseases sometimes cause excessive damage to highly managed turfgrasses. The proper use of fungicides in these instances, …

The introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been controversial globally, with differing views on the risks and benefits of their use in agriculture, even though the technology is extensively used in medicine. In Africa, the adoption of GMOs has been relatively slow compared to other regions due to a combination of factors, including poor infrastructure, inadequate resources, and public resistance. Objective: Information is needed to guide the design of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating L-citrulline therapy for premature infants with pulmonary hypertension associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD-PH). Based on our single-dose pharmacokinetic study, we evaluated the ability of a multi-dose enteral L-citrulline strategy to achieve a target trough steady-state L-citrulline plasma concentration and its tolerability in premature infants. Study design: Plasma L-citrulline concentrations were measured in six premature infants receiving 60 mg/kg L-citrulline every 6 h for 72 h before the first and last L-citrulline doses. This study examined the impact of written feedback on assessment in secondary schools, focusing on both student and teacher perspectives. Using action research with 80 students and their teachers, the study spans four months across three reflective cycles. Central findings reveal that descriptive, non-evaluative feedback empowers students. Feedback clarifies misunderstandings, offers specific improvement guidance, and makes "next steps" manageable. Further, descriptive feedback exposes students to broader problem-solving strategies. The study l s o shows that written feedback transcends mere evaluation. Adversaries have several ways to leverage and expose the data disclosed in social media network engagements for different motives including but not limited to fraud, discreditation, or social engineering. Previous research on social media interactions discussed increased engagements where influencers and viral trends were involved. Studies also discussed engagements declining over time. Within posts or engagements, personal identifiable information (PII) can be shared with varying rate of risk severity. Publicly available data such as this can be leveraged by adversaries. This dissertation focuses on non-autonomous difference equations. Results are proven for non-autonomous n-dimensional versions of commonly used maps, such as Ricker's map, Pielou's map, and more. Chapter I is about the dynamics a generalized Beverton Holt equation in 3-dimensions, and its non-autonomous analogue. Chapter I also includes a result for general 3-dimensional systems. Chapter II is about the convergence of non-autonomous difference equations.

Despite tremendous measles incidence reduction through universal vaccination, elimination efforts rely on improved surveillance. The detection of anti-measles immunoglobulin M (IgM) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is the standard laboratory diagnostic method. However, true infection is rare, and seroconversion following measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination also generates IgM, which results in low positive predictive values of assays in elimination settings, thus necessitating confirmatory testing. Improved diagnostic tests for measles infection are a World Health Organization research priority. We investigated whether dimeric immunoglobulin A (dIgA), the predominant antibody produced in mucosal immunity, may be a marker of recent or acute measles infection. …

Herbivory poses significant challenges to many economically valued crop plants. Plant growth hormones such as gibberellins are known to influence plant growth mechanisms especially at times of stress such as herbivory. To investigate, we set up a two-factorial design with 60 Solanum lycopersicum plants and subjected 15 plants each to four treatment groups: reference control, 0.187M gibberellin, wounding, and 0.187M gibberellin+wounding. We found that addition of gibberellin significantly influenced plant height and chlorophyll fluorescence, but not biomass or root-to-shoot ratios. Mechanical wounding showed significant effects on chlorophyll fluorescence but did not significantly impact other tested plant factors. The interaction between …

Regulatory mechanisms of protein trafficking from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are critical to understand since neurodegenerative diseases involve defects in this process leading to chronic ER stress and cell death. This study aimed to better understand the calcium regulatory mechanisms of ER-to-Golgi trafficking in hybrid neuroglioblastoma cells (NG108). Specifically, we asked whether proteasomal degradation of transport machinery was involved in the previously demonstrated upregulation of ER-to-Golgi transport evoked by calcium signaling. This phenomenological study explored the perspectives of American Indian/Alaska Native students who had all graduated from the same Northeast-Nebraska public school located on a federally recognized Indian reservation and completed at least a four-year degree.
