Permanent monitoring programs are valuable to identify drivers of ecosystem trends. For example, in 2021, we reported the first record of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (sctld) along the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, affecting major reef—building coral species with a prevalence above 30%. However, a few sites such as Carenero remained unaffected by sctld for almost 2 years. The average coral cover in this site was about 18—25% (mean 18.3% ± sd 1.5), and disease prevalence did not exceed 7% in the coral community. During the first quarter of 2022, a few colonies (

Fungal leaf endophytes(FLE) are microorganisms that live in the leaf tissues of plants, influencing plant health, growth, and stress resistance. The prairie ecosystem, with its diverse flora, provides an ideal environment for studying the symbiotic relationships between endophytes and plants.

In recent years, the invasive species Lespedeza cuneata has become increasingly prevalent, continuously invading native prairie communities. The Phillips Tract Research Area (PHRE), a prairie established in 2018 for research purposes, has also been invaded by L. cuneata. They must follow and learn different knowledge and research skills from their senior academic scholars, mainly supervisors and other congenial faculty members within the department. During the process, reflectivity is one of their vital self-fulfilment tools to elucidate, contemplate, ruminate, and then internalize all the given prescriptions. Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) presents with a varying severity of withdrawal signs and length of treatment (LOT). We examined the course and relevance of each of the NAS withdrawal signs during treatment in a sample of 182 infants with any prenatal opioid exposure, gestational age ≥ 35 weeks, without other medical conditions, and meeting the criteria for pharmacological treatment. Infants were monitored using the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool. Daily mean Finnegan scores were estimated using linear mixed models with random subject effects to account for repeated withdrawal scores from the same subject. The ribosome is the instrument by which all biological life on earth translates a message of ribonucleic acid (mRNA) into proteins. The modern-day ribosome has evolved into a highly complex and exceedingly efficient macromolecular machine responsible for protein synthesis. The two primary functional activities of the ribosome, decoding and peptide bond formation, have been attributed to rRNA. While three rRNA bases have precisely-defined roles in decoding, no direct role for any RNA or protein residues within the active site has been established in catalysis of peptide bond formation.

What is it like to be at the intersection between the natural and technological? I see plants as living cloth – can we build cloth using human-evolved technology (weaving) and natural life systems? In this practice-as-research, I take growth models from plants such as algae, then process these codes on a loom to exploring the emergence and narrative that develop.
