How Has Sociality Shaped The Cetacean Brain? A White Matter Tractography Analysis, Isabelle Origlio
How Has Sociality Shaped The Cetacean Brain? A White Matter Tractography Analysis, Isabelle Origlio
Theses & ETDs
Dolphins and whales have long fascinated the public and scientists alike. Although there is interest in unraveling the mystery of dolphin and whales’ large brains and complex behaviors, cetacean brains have been studied relatively little. Different species of cetaceans demonstrate wide ranging patterns of social organization, which provide an opportunity to investigate the neural correlates of social behaviors. This study examined the amygdala of four dolphin and whale species to investigate the link between connectivity in this brain region and social behaviors. Connectivity of the amygdala was found to vary with social complexity of the species. Pilot whales are the …
The Next Generation Of Blue: Health And Autonomy Of Young Adults In A Blue Zone Region, Isadora Vitkus
The Next Generation Of Blue: Health And Autonomy Of Young Adults In A Blue Zone Region, Isadora Vitkus
Theses & ETDs
This thesis focuses on young adult perspectives amidst the data of successful aging and longevity of nonagenarians and centenarians in the world’s five Blue Zones. With lacking data on how the Blue Zone Power 9 principles are affecting young adult lives in Blue Zone regions, this thesis assessed the presence of and usage of the Power 9 principles in the studied young adult population. Chronic disease is also on the rise in several countries, and the imminent threat of disease for many young adults is overbearing. The stress that this worry brings can often lead to heightened cortisol levels in …
Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh
Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh
Theses & ETDs
Despite the pervasive presence of occupation and its potential ramifications on mental health, a notable gap in research exists concerning the specific impact of Israel’s occupation on Palestinian youth. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this study identifies key determinants of mental health and examines their manifestation within the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). Drawing upon established frameworks and empirical evidence, the research explores how factors such as violence, restricted movement, food and water insecurity, and inadequate sanitary infrastructure intersect to shape the mental well-being of Palestinian youth under occupation. For each of these major features of occupation, this thesis …
Home On The Grange: Ethnobotanical Entrevues In Outaouais, Michael Bolesh
Home On The Grange: Ethnobotanical Entrevues In Outaouais, Michael Bolesh
Theses & ETDs
This thesis is based on two months of ethnographic research on a farm/apothecary homestead in Outaouais, Québec. There I strived to unearth the approaches both botanical and market employed by Twin Lakes Apothecary to better understand and contextualize the contemporary manifestations of ethnobotany in Québec. I pursued this primarily through a participant-observer approach in which I opportunistically followed networks of exchange and information to gradually traverse the life history of products and people at the apothecary. In examining the apothecary through such a lens, I illuminate the mythos and notions of production and validity in sectors often described as organic, …
An Investigation Of The Potential Roles Of Superoxide And Singlet Oxygen In Carpel Fusion In Catharanthus Roseus (L.) G. Don, Madison Dye
Theses & ETDs
A fusion event occurs between the carpels of Catharanthus roseus L. involving the dedifferentiation and redifferentiation of epidermal cells into less specialized cells known as parenchyma. This results in a solidly-fused gynoecium. An unknown “factor” exchanged between the contacting carpels mediates this process. Little is known about the identity of the factor and the signaling process that ensues, but there are data in support of a role for brassinosteroids, and a bit of evidence for the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly hydrogen peroxide. The present study was conducted to further investigate the role of additional ROS, namely singlet …
Third Ventricle Choroid Plexus In Healthy Brains Vs Traumatic Injury Brains: A Comparative Immunohistochemistry Analysis In Mice, Tessa Vincennie
Third Ventricle Choroid Plexus In Healthy Brains Vs Traumatic Injury Brains: A Comparative Immunohistochemistry Analysis In Mice, Tessa Vincennie
Theses & ETDs
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a significant health issue, and there are a wide variety of efforts taking place to research the neural mechanisms involved in an attempt to find treatments. Importantly, there is a deficit in literature regarding the choroid plexus in how it relates to traumatic brain injuries. Furthermore, more research must be done to compare cellular mechanisms between ventricles effectively. There is no recorded study history of the third ventricle choroid plexus following TBI. Within this thesis, I investigated the differences in the third ventricle’s choroid plexus immunohistological presentation within healthy mice versus the brains of TBI …
Enzyme Kinetic Characterization And Quantitation Of 2-Hydroxyglutarate Production By C.Elegans Isocitrate Dehydrogenase-1 Enzymes: Wild-Type Idh-1 And Mutant Enzymes G98n And R133h., Melissa Bouchard
Theses & ETDs
The metabolic enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH-1) is the C. elegans ortholog of human cytosolic IDH1. The mechanism for both the human and the C. elegans IDH1 enzymes reversibly convert the substrate isocitrate (ICT) to α-ketoglutarate (αKG). The IDH-1 enzyme is particularly interesting due to the association of certain IDH1 mutations to human cancers. The mutations that are associated with oncogenesis are shown to inhibit the activity of IDH1 by introducing a neomorphic activity that converts αKG to α-hydroxyglutaric acid, also called 2- hydroxyglutarate (2HG).To determine if IDH-1 may be a reliable model system to explore the cellular abnormalities produced by …
Role Of Mct1 In The Progression Metabolism Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Saiyid Ibtehaj Shariq
Role Of Mct1 In The Progression Metabolism Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Saiyid Ibtehaj Shariq
Theses & ETDs
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) arises from the mucosal surface and is the most common type of head and neck cancer. Despite treatment, it often recurs, leading to high patient mortality. Most OSCC advances from precancerous dysplasia to early invasive cancer, but the process is not fully understood, hindering effective interventions. Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) is a membrane protein that transports L-lactate and pyruvate across the plasma membrane. Because increased MCT1 expression is linked to OSCC progression, we hypothesized that MCT1 promotes progression by supporting metabolic coupling between cancer cells and the surrounding stroma. To test this hypothesis, we knocked …
Habitat Utilization Patterns Of Semi-Free-Ranging Lemurs In Human Care: A Comparative Analysis Of Ring-Tailed & Red Ruffed Lemurs’ Responses To Different Kinds Of Enrichment, Alexia Atkinson
Theses & ETDs
Lemurs are at risk; 98% of Madagascar's 106 species of lemurs are threatened with extinction. As a result of this conservation emergency, research and conservation facilities have prioritized studying and breeding lemurs, especially in naturalistic conditions like fenced forests. However, sometimes lemurs in these facilities do not use the extent of the land available to them, and we do not always know why. This research investigates the effect of enrichment devices on the habitat preferences and behaviors of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), a species that often spends time on the ground, and red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra), a primarily arboreal …
Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson
Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson
Theses & ETDs
Research has found that social isolation, especially in the case of ostracism, can have many negative effects on individuals. However, some factors decrease the extent of the negative effects. One such factor is an individual’s motivation for solitude: the reasons one seeks experiences of solitude and how they use them. Two studies expand solitude research into the workplace setting. The first study used a cross-sectional survey and examined how motivation for solitude related to relationship quality and satisfaction among coworkers, and how the association between ostracism and negative mental health is related to self-determined motivation for solitude. Self-determined motivation for …
Nematodes As A Model For Drug Addiction: Using Dopamine Dependent Locomotor Behavior In C. Elegans To Investigate Psychostimulants, Lila Marlowe
Theses & ETDs
This thesis discusses drug addiction research, particularly focusing on psychostimulants like amphetamines and their effects on the brain's dopamine pathway. It explores Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model organism to study drug addiction and highlights its advantages, such as its fully mapped nervous system and highly conserved dopamine pathway. This research tests the effectiveness of the swimming induced paralysis (SWIP) assay in C. elegans treated with ephedrine, a psychostimulant. Results indicated a significant increase in paralysis (52.5% to 82.9%) with higher ephedrine concentrations (5.0 mM to 7.0 mM), suggesting its potential as a model for studying drug addiction and …
The Potential Role Of Endophytic Bacteria In Promoting Growth And Cellular Differentiation In Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Samiha Siddiqui
The Potential Role Of Endophytic Bacteria In Promoting Growth And Cellular Differentiation In Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Samiha Siddiqui
Theses & ETDs
Hypothesized to have originated from rhizosphere bacteria, bacterial endophytes dwell in the tissues of every plant tested and provide many benefits to their host, which can range from abiotic/biotic stress tolerance to disease resistance, all because of their influence on plant metabolism, gene expression, and morphology. Totipotency plays an important role in the differentiation of cells into a variety of cell types, in this study pertaining to Brassica oleracea var botrytis (common cauliflower) head explants (or excised fragments), as they develop in culture in the presence of three bacteria: Ralstonia insidiosa, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Although the metabolites synthesized …
New College Dolphins: Automated Whistle Extraction, Vivian Cargille
New College Dolphins: Automated Whistle Extraction, Vivian Cargille
Theses & ETDs
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have been the subject of long-term research in Sarasota Bay since 1970, and are extremely vocal animals. A network of passive listening stations in the bay create potential for passive acoustic monitoring of the dolphin community, specifically with individually distinctive whistle types (signature whistles). Attempts to find whistles in large datasets have necessitated huge amounts of time to manually verify detections. An automated whistle detection method was built and tested with Kaleidoscope Pro, an acoustic analysis software. Recordings were used from two stations in Sarasota Bay: Palma Sola Bay (2018) and New College (2022). Three classifiers …
Generalization Of Planck’S Law And Analysis Of Inflection Points And Maxima, Isaac Moncada-Almendarez
Generalization Of Planck’S Law And Analysis Of Inflection Points And Maxima, Isaac Moncada-Almendarez
Theses & ETDs
The study proposes generalizations of 18 mathematical forms of Planck’s thermal radiation law. Sixteen transcendental equations are derived and solved for calculating the positions of three characteristic points: two inflection points and a maximum. Displacement laws for each of the characteristic points (total of 52 points), in the spirit of Wien’s displacement law, are proposed. The study analyzes eight unitless probability density functions (PDFs) via proposed inflection point parameters, compared to the conventional standard deviation statistical parameter. Additionally, the proposed comparative study is utilized as a framework for linking Photobiological processes and the Planck’s thermal radiation law. It is proposed …
Echolocating And Non-Echolocating Whales Have Conserved Ascending Auditory Pathways But Differentially Lateralized Auditory-Cerebellar Connections, Sophie Flem
Theses & ETDs
In the inaugural analysis of structural connectivity in a baleen whale (suborder Mysticeti) brain, we compared the white matter tracts of a non-echolocating sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) against those of three echolocating delphinids (suborder Odontoceti). Brains were opportunistically collected from stranded animals and imaged post-mortem at high resolution with a specialized acquisition sequence optimized for dead tissue. We then conducted probabilistic tractography to compare the qualitative features, white matter tract strength, and lateralization of potential ascending and descending auditory paths in the mysticete versus odontocete brains. Tracts were seeded in the inferior colliculi (IC), a nexus for ascending auditory information, …
Analysis Of Stress Indicators In Sharks In Relation To Capture Method, Jenna Levich
Analysis Of Stress Indicators In Sharks In Relation To Capture Method, Jenna Levich
Theses & ETDs
As apex predators in the marine ecosystem, population declines in sharks can cause catastrophic imbalances leading to decreased biodiversity and eventual ecosystem collapse (Guida et al., 2016). Today, overfishing and unintentional bycatch are the leading causes of population declines in elasmobranchs and are so significant that the international union for conservation and nature (IUCN) quantifies approximately one-quarter of all elasmobranchs on the red list for threatened species (Guida et al., 2016). This study addresses this issue by examining the impact of two large-scale capture methods used within commercial fisheries. Longline and gillnet fishing operations subject many species of elasmobranchs to …
Ecopoetry Collection: The Anaerobic Summers, Sadie Landreville
Ecopoetry Collection: The Anaerobic Summers, Sadie Landreville
Theses & ETDs
The Anaerobic Summers is a collection of sixty-six pages of ecopoems divided among six sections— “Plastic Causation,” “Neptune Wallows,” “Rewash (Hose-Down),” “The Forest,” Mother’s Apartment: 2B (Open-Invitation),” and “Expiration”—that give intrinsic value and respect to the other than human world. In my introduction, I not only work to define ecopoetry, but show how society's views of wilderness are detrimental and how ecopoetry acts as a bridge between wilderness and society. These ecopoems challenge the belief that humans have supremacy over the wild world. As Long writes in his “Introduction to Ecopoetics,” “Ecopoetry uses language to deepen a sense of nature’s …

You Can’T Judge A Book By Its Cover: Finding Beauty As A Chinese Transracial Adoptee, Lianna Mcdonald
You Can’T Judge A Book By Its Cover: Finding Beauty As A Chinese Transracial Adoptee, Lianna Mcdonald
Theses & ETDs
In America, the Chinese transracial adoptee sits in a unique position between two cultures with few opportunities to properly explore that position. As a Chinese transracial adoptee myself, I explore my own cultural identity through my artwork and dissect the many facets of my upbringing that have contributed to my sense of identity. Lack of Asian, and specifically adoptee, representation in the media paired with conflicting expectations of Chinese women in America fuel an ongoing feeling of being an outsider that has informed my work and discussion. Artists like Xu Bing and Rina Banerjee, who similarly work with culturally significant …
Biological Connections Between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus And Alzheimer's Disease: A Review Of Insulin Resistance, Oxidative Stress, And Accumulation Of Amyloid-Β And Tau, Nayelis Cardenas
Theses & ETDs
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) are becoming more widespread as the aging population expands. Researchers have recently investigated the physiological links between T2DM and AD due to their co-occurrence. Insulin resistance plays a pivotal role in both, impacting cognitive function. Additionally, oxidative stress increases over time in both T2DM and AD, potentially impacting their progression. The accumulation of amyloid-β and tau is a central hypothesis in understanding AD, with T2DM suggesting a possible connection to amyloid-β accumulation. This paper explores the key connection between T2DM and AD, with a focus on insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and …

The results inferred that there was no significant relationship between the studied variables, indicating there are other confounding …
Assessing The Effectiveness Of Goal-Directed Versus Stimulus Driven Visual Search Training At Improving Goalkeepers’ Penalty Kick Save Responses, Annabelle Treacy
Assessing The Effectiveness Of Goal-Directed Versus Stimulus Driven Visual Search Training At Improving Goalkeepers’ Penalty Kick Save Responses, Annabelle Treacy
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Goalkeepers must perceive and analyze many different types of information in a short time to effectively move their bodies to make a save. Skilled goalkeepers enhance their actions by coupling them to information present in their environment. The information in their environment constantly changes, so the goalkeepers must adjust their strategies or positions to match the environmental demands. Goalkeepers use two types of perception and attentional strategies: stimulus-driven and goal-directed. Stimulus-driven perception is fast and compulsory, while goal-directed perception is slower and more methodical. Both visual search strategies direct the goalkeeper’s attention to where it is most needed and can …
