Escaping Immoral Plants: The Dynamic Of Access And The Moral Economy Of Tobacco Farming On The Slopes Of Sindoro-Sumbing, Novi Priharwanto
Escaping Immoral Plants: The Dynamic Of Access And The Moral Economy Of Tobacco Farming On The Slopes Of Sindoro-Sumbing, Novi Priharwanto
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
In recent years, tobacco farmers on the slopes of Mount Sindoro and Sumbing (Sinsu), Central Java, have experienced a downturn due to the increasingly falling price of dry chopped tobacco. Instead of making a profit, they are in debt to middlemen, which they may not be able to pay off until the next planting season. As a result, many of the farmers decided to switch to agricultural cultivation or quit tobacco altogether. This research argues that the process of the farmers’ leaving tobacco is also influenced by the dynamics of access and the moral economy, as manifest in the metaphor …

Previous investigators have used various anti-HLA-F monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to demonstrate that the tissue distribution of HLA-F is highly restricted. Notably, these mAbs differed in their immunodiagnostic capabilities. Specifically, mAbs Fpep1.1 and FG1 detected HLA-F intracellularly in B cells but not on the cell surface, whereas mAb 3D11 detected HLA-F on the cell surface. The presence of HLA-F on T cells was recognized by mAb FG1 but not by mAb Fpep1.1. mAb 3D11 detected HLA-F on the cell surface of activated B cells and on peripheral blood lymphocytes, but not on the normal cells. Importantly, mAb 3D11 revealed that HLA-F …

Slight Cost Of Production Changes Noted In The 2024 Nebraska Crop Enterprise Budgets, Glennis Mcmclure
Cornhusker Economics
The Nebraska crop budgets are available for the 2024 production season. The 84 enterprise budgets prepared in the October 2023 timeframe use input prices collected as of that time. Overall, estimates reflect slight cost of production decreases in the budgets when compared to the 2023 cost estimates. For 2024, the main drivers of cost decreases are due to decreased fuel and fertilizer costs. In some cases, pesticide costs decreased, yet for some of those products, prices increased. Seed and interest costs have increased for 2024 adding to cash expenses, while land opportunity costs and depreciation costs have continued to rise …

The Mef2c Gene Dose-Dependently Controls Hippocampal Neurogenesis And The Expression Of Autism-Like Behaviors, Sreetama Basu, Eun Jeoung Ro, Zhi Liu, Hyunjung Kim, Aubrey Bennett, Seungwoo Kang, Hoonkyo Suh
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Mutations in the activity-dependent transcription factor MEF2C have been associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders. Among these, autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related behavioral deficits are manifested. Multiple animal models that harbor mutations in Mef2c have provided compelling evidence that Mef2c is indeed an ASD gene. However, studies in mice with germline or global brain knock-out of Mef2c are limited in their ability to identify the precise neural substrates and cell types that are required for the expression of Mef2c-mediated ASD behaviors. Given the role of hippocampal neurogenesis in cognitive and social behaviors, in this study we aimed to investigate the role …

Poor oral health is associated with cardiovascular disease and dementia. Potential pathways include sepsis from oral bacteria, systemic inflammation, and nutritional deficiencies. However, in post-industrialized populations, links between oral health and chronic disease may be confounded because the lower socioeconomic exposome (poor diet, pollution, low physical activity) often entails insufficient dental care. We assessed tooth loss, caries, and damaged teeth, in relation to cardiovascular and brain aging among the Tsimane, a subsistence population living a relatively traditional forager-horticulturalist lifestyle with poor dental health, but minimal cardiovascular disease and dementia. Dental health was assessed by a physician in 739 participants aged …

BackgroundMeasuring coastal-pelagic prey fields at scales relevant to the movements of marine predators is challenging due to the dynamic and ephemeral nature of these environments. Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are thought to aggregate in nearshore tropical waters due to seasonally enhanced foraging opportunities. This implies that the three-dimensional movements of these animals may be associated with bio-physical properties that enhance prey availability. To date, few studies have tested this hypothesis.MethodsHere, we conducted ship-based acoustic surveys, net tows and water column profiling (salinity, temperature, chlorophyll fluorescence) to determine the volumetric density, distribution and community composition of mesozooplankton (predominantly euphausiids and copepods) …
Prevention Of Food Fraud In Egypt: Policy Implementation Challenges And The Way Forward, Hager Yehia Shalaby
Prevention Of Food Fraud In Egypt: Policy Implementation Challenges And The Way Forward, Hager Yehia Shalaby
Theses and Dissertations
Prevention and control of food fraud is now an emerging policy goal for different governments. Food fraud is intentionally adulterating food intended for personal gain and deceiving consumers. Adulterated food continues to be a significant threat to Egypt's food sector because of its negative impact on the food industry's reputation. Additionally, it jeopardizes the success of initiatives to increase investment, tourism, and exports in Egypt. Addressing fraud is, by definition, the most challenging food control system form because it directly addresses a personal stake benefiting from fraud behavior. In light of the importance of food fraud prevention as an emerging …

Reliable Outdoor Ai-Based Autonomous Uav Localization And Trajectory Tracking Using Cellular Networks, Ghada Afifi
Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming an integral part of numerous commercial and military applications. In many of these applications, the UAV is required to self-navigate in highly dynamic urban environments. Existing localization and trajectory planning techniques, which rely mainly on the Global Positioning System (GPS), do not provide an effective real-time solution for self-localization and path planning, particularly in dense urban environments. The purpose of this thesis is to study the localization and trajectory planning of UAVs independent of GPS systems or other detectable mobile signals. We propose to utilize the broadcast signals from existing cellular networks to localize …

Background: The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains unclear. However, it’s believed to be a multifactorial condition. Several studies suggest the involvement of gut and oral microbiome in the predisposition of ASD symptoms. Understanding the pathophysiology could aid in developing better treatment strategies that improve the quality of life of ASD individuals and their caregivers.
Aim: The current study aims at characterizing the gut and oral microbiome composition of ASD children compared to their healthy siblings and mothers as control groups.
Methods: Stool and saliva samples were collected from fourteen families at Ain Shams University Hospital, Outpatient Clinic. The …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and cancer are among the top global human health issues requiring urgent control practices. AMR caused 5 million death cases around the world in 2019. This number is expected to reach 10 million deaths by 2050. Cancer deaths reached 10 million in 2020. Additionally, anticancer drug resistance is a common cause of death among cancer patients. Screening for novel compounds is one of the strategies recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to control drug resistance in microbial and cancer cells. Marine natural products (MNPs) are characterized by chemically diverse structures with various bioactivities, especially in extreme …
