Containerization Of Seafarers In The International Shipping Industry: Contemporary Seamanship, Maritime Social Infrastructures, And Mobility Politics Of Global Logistics, Liang Wu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation discusses the mobility politics of container shipping and argues that technological development, political-economic order, and social infrastructure co-produce one another. Containerization, the use of standardized containers to carry cargo across modes of transportation that is said to have revolutionized and globalized international trade since the late 1950s, has served to expand and extend the power of international coalitions of states and corporations to control the movements of commodities (shipments) and labor (seafarers). The advent and development of containerization was driven by a sociotechnical imaginary and international social contract of seamless shipping and cargo flows. In practice, this liberal, …

Evaluating The Reliability And Accuracy Of Alchemical Binding Free Energy Methods And Calculations, Fnu Sheenam
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Molecular recognition plays a crucial role in various biological processes, such as enzymatic reactions, signal transduction, and genetic information processing. Investigating how proteins selectively bind to their partners is an active research area, but there is a lack of experimental details on protein structures and interactions in molecular complexes. Computational techniques based on macromolecular structures offer a way to predict protein-ligand interactions and explore their recognition mechanisms. Estimating binding affinities, particularly through alchemical binding free energy calculations, has become valuable in supporting drug discovery. This work introduces new methodologies, utilizing the Alchemical Transfer Method, to address issues like poor convergence …

Rational Design Of Peptide-Based Materials Informed By Multiscale Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Dhwanit Rahul Dave
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The challenge of establishing a sustainable and circular economy for materials in medicine and technology necessitates bioinspired design. Nature's intricate machinery, forged through evolution, relies on a finite set of biomolecular building blocks with through-bond and through-space interactions. Repurposing these molecular building blocks requires a seamless integration of computational modeling, design, and experimental validation. The tools and concepts developed in this thesis pioneer new directions in peptide-materials design, grounded in fundamental principles of physical chemistry. We present a synergistic approach that integrates experimental designs and computational methods, specifically molecular dynamics simulations, to gain in-depth molecular insights crucial for advancing the …
Algorithmic Love: Twenty-First Century Organizations Of The Romantic, Sandra Moyano Ariza
Algorithmic Love: Twenty-First Century Organizations Of The Romantic, Sandra Moyano Ariza
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation investigates the highly computed and accelerated experiences of digital love as well as their cultural and artistic representations in order to shed light on the human and more-than-human entanglements producing the algorithmic love experience. The recent turn to love in critical theory and cultural studies examines how love circulates in neoliberal societies and in the subjective processes of the users, foregrounding the control of populations and the very much lamented “end of love” (Illouz 2019). My study of love supplements the neoliberalist critique of algorithmic love with a posthuman and media theory approach that attends to the material …
The Role Of The Infralimbic-Basal Forebrain Pathway In Fear Extinction, Carolina Maria Fernandes Henriques
The Role Of The Infralimbic-Basal Forebrain Pathway In Fear Extinction, Carolina Maria Fernandes Henriques
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is a key region for emotion regulation, and its failure to regulate extinction of aversive memories is associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Study of how the Infralimbic cortex (IL), a subregion of the mPFC, directly communicates with the Basolateral Amygdala (IL-BLA), has thus far failed to uncover the circuit mechanisms that lead to mPFC-mediated amygdala suppression of firing and diminished fear responses during extinction retrieval. One problem of this model is that it doesn’t incorporate indirect IL communication with the BLA. A key region to help understand how IL modulates extinction is the basal …

Ethnic Minorities And Family Health History: An Autoethnography Of Guyanese Americans And Kidney Disease, Dhaneesha R. Bahadur
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Exploring family health histories (FHHs) has emerged in recent years as an inexpensive genomic tool in public health. Families and clinicians can also use them to uncover family histories and experiences, which could inform better lifestyle choices to prevent or delay the onset of diseases. Exploring family health histories focuses on an individual’s genetic makeup and considers differences in lifestyle and environment. Despite national campaigns, it is an underutilized tool that could lead to engagement in effective strategies and better health outcomes. One important and serious condition that families should be more aware of is chronic kidney disease (CKD). One …

Organic chemistry exists in all aspects of everyday life from polymers to pharmaceutics. Formation of carbon-carbon bonds is essential for the synthesis of complex organic compounds. This goal can be achieved by using transition metal catalysts. Second-row transition metals such as Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ir have shown remarkable efficacy in these reactions. Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions form carbon-carbon bonds between electrophiles and nucleophiles using transition metal catalysts. Pd is mainly used in this reaction.
Transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions that form a bond between two C(sp2) carbons have been widely studied over the past decades. C(sp2)-C(sp3 …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The ecological impacts of changes to land use are relevant to concerns about climate change, eutrophication of waterbodies, and reductions in biodiversity. As a foundational component of ecosystem functioning, changes to soil biogeochemistry have significant effects on overall ecosystem health. With cities continuing to grow and develop in extent, the impacts of urbanization and suburbanization on soils are of particular concern. Despite a wide range of natural climatic and geologic conditions, several factors have driven similar patterns of land transformation and management across the United States. In particular, federal initiatives including the Home Owners Loan Corporation, the Federal Housing Administration, …
Making Sense Of Making Parole In New York, Alexandra Mcglinchy
Making Sense Of Making Parole In New York, Alexandra Mcglinchy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For many individuals incarcerated in New York, the initial step toward freedom begins with an interview with the Board of Parole. This process, however, is frequently a complex and challenging one, characterized by repeated denials and extended incarcerations. The disparity in outcomes – where one individual may receive over 20 denials and another is granted parole on their first attempt – highlights the ambiguity and inconsistency in the parole decision-making process. This project aims to clarify the factors that influence parole decisions by concentrating on measurable variables. These include age, race, duration of sentence served, proportion of sentence served, type …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Herein, we describe our efforts to investigate mechanistic considerations of oxidopyrylium ylides and their use in cycloadditions to form complex bicyclic structures and the advancement of these cycloadducts to the synthesis of densely functionalized tropolones. This work also describes applications of tropolones as biologically relevant structures and dynamic fluorophores.
In Chapter 1, we expand upon previous studies done in the Murelli Lab describing the ability of 3-hydroxy-4-pyrone derived oxidopyrylium dimers to revert back to ylides in situ and as result can be used as a clean oxidopyrylium ylide source in accessing oxabicyclic compounds. Intermolecular cycloadditions of these ylides can be …

Guyana manages an estimated 5.3 million hectares of old-growth tropical forests, 29% of its total forest area, for timber extraction. Individuals and companies can apply for time-limited leases that allocate access, management, and extraction rights for timber through a concession system. In many tropical regions, including Guyana, a lack of integrated land use planning often leads to overlapping extractive and forest use rights for logging and mining. Overlapping land rights in turn create uncertainty and limit investments toward sustainable forest management, affecting deforestation and forest degradation rates. In this study, we use matched fixed-effect and difference-in-differences panel data models to …

Before the invasion of the fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda into Africa, smallholder farmers had been using indigenous practices such as applying fish soup to plants to manage stemborer pests. Although farmers have since begun adapting this practice against FAW, no attempt has been made to scientifically evaluate this practice. Therefore, we assessed the efficacy of applying fish soup to maize plants that were artificially infested with FAW under semi-field conditions. Our results showed that foliar damage is inversely correlated with the concentration of a fish soup and sugar solution, with the highest (100%) concentration resulting in the lowest foliar …
The Physical-Emotional Distinction In Tort, Philip Petrov
The Physical-Emotional Distinction In Tort, Philip Petrov
Faculty Scholarship
Several legal scholars have recently argued that U.S. tort law’s physical-emotional distinction commits tort to the objectionable position of mind-body dualism, but they have not considered the distinction’s role as an aid to judicial cognition and decision-making. Drawing primarily on the law of negligent infliction of emotional distress, this essay argues that tort’s physical-emotional distinction is not a relic of mind-body dualism but a heuristic that judges have used to structure and simplify the difficult but unavoidable task of drawing lines between legally cognizable and non-cognizable harm. The analysis has at least three normative implications: (1) users of tort’s physical-emotional …

OBJECTIVES: We utilize a large retrospective study cohort derived from electronic medical records to estimate the prevalence of long-term non-progression (LTNP) and determine the factors associated with progression among children infected with HIV in Botswana and Uganda.
METHODS: Electronic medical records from large tertiary HIV clinical centers in Botswana and Uganda were queried to identify LTNP children 0-18 years enrolled between June 2003 and May 2014 and extract demographic and nutritional parameters. Multivariate subdistribution hazard analyses were used to examine demographic factors and nutritional status in progression in the pre-antiretroviral therapy era.
RESULTS: Between the two countries, 14,246 antiretroviral therapy-naïve …

In the past decade, Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged as a global public health concern. Although adult infections are typically mild, maternal infection can lead to adverse fetal outcomes. Understanding how ZIKV proteins disrupt development can provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of disease caused by this virus, which includes microcephaly. In this study, we generated a toolkit to ectopically express ZIKV proteins in vivo in Drosophila melanogaster in a tissue-specific manner using the GAL4/UAS system. We used this toolkit to identify phenotypes and potential host pathways targeted by the virus. Our work identified that expression of most ZIKV proteins caused …

Shotgun phosphoproteomics enables high-throughput analysis of phosphopeptides in biological samples. One of the primary challenges associated with this technology is the relatively low rate of phosphopeptide identification during data analysis. This limitation hampers the full realization of the potential offered by shotgun phosphoproteomics. Here we present DeepRescore2, a computational workflow that leverages deep learning-based retention time and fragment ion intensity predictions to improve phosphopeptide identification and phosphosite localization. Using a state-of-the-art computational workflow as a benchmark, DeepRescore2 increases the number of correctly identified peptide-spectrum matches by 17% in a synthetic dataset and identifies 19% to 46% more phosphopeptides in biological …
