Children born preterm often face challenges with self-regulation during toddlerhood. This study examined the relationship between prematurity, supportive parent behaviors, frontal lobe gray matter volume (GMV), and emotion regulation (ER) among toddlers during a parent-assisted, increasingly complex problem-solving task, validated for this age range. Data were collected from preterm toddlers (n = 57) ages 15–30 months corrected for prematurity and their primary caregivers. MRI data were collected during toddlers’ natural sleep. The sample contained three gestational groups: 22–27 weeks (extremely preterm; EPT), 28–33 weeks (very preterm; VPT), and 34–36 weeks (late preterm; LPT). Older toddlers became more compliant as …

Harmonious Healing: A Review Of Music Therapy, A Humanities-Based Approach To Alzheimer’S Disease Treatment, Rohan K. Desai

Kentucky Undergraduate Journal for the Health Humanities

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease often characterized by memory loss, confusion, and overall cognitive decline. The aging global population has, in recent years, highlighted the fundamental lack of pharmacological treatments for individuals facing an AD diagnosis. In response, a growing body of research has shifted focus to non-pharmacological humanities-based interventions. One such intervention has been music therapy (MT). Music-focused measures have shown great promise as a method of slowing cognitive decline, but mixed results in the literature warrant the need for further investigation. Often, socioeconomic barriers can limit an individual’s access to drug-related treatments, but the affordable …

Plant And Microbial Interactions Under Simulated Microgravity Conditions, Parker Mann, Mitchell Villafania, Paulina Slick, Ella Rowe, Collin Topolski, Hugo Castillo

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

With human space exploration expanding to establish bases on the Moon, there are increased challenges involved to sustain astronauts. One major limitation is the food supply, which must be constantly replaced and increases mission costs. However, with long-duration missions to the Moon, the lunar environment can provide resources that can be accessed in-situ for plant growth. Plant production in space, however, poses challenges inherent to the biological stress response imposed by factors like microgravity and radiation, as shown by multiple experiments at the ISS or in simulated space environments. At the Moon, the regolith can provide support for plant growth …

Assessing Nursing Deployment Readiness-A Literature Review, George Mcenroe Feb 2024

Assessing Nursing Deployment Readiness-A Literature Review, George Mcenroe

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Air Force nurses must be prepared for deployment to support military missions on short notice. During deployments, they may be asked to practice in demanding and austere wartime environments. The required competencies for deployment include the care of multi-trauma patients, military vehicles and aircraft, mass casualty care, and military-specific skills. Many Air Force nurses work in low acuity roles and do not maintain the clinical competency and skills necessary if called upon to deploy. A deployment notification may happen with little notification, limiting the opportunity for a quick “ramp-up” of critical skills. Maintaining deployment and clinical readiness is an ongoing …
