Two years ago my attention was first called to the sensitiveness of the stamens of Portulaca grandiflora, by observing a peculiar motion in them, while a small wild bee was engaged in gathering honey, and perhaps pollen, from the flowers. Upon trial I found that I could, by touching the stamens, make them move through quite considerable arcs of circles. I pursued the investigation somewhat farther at the time, but on account of a pressure of work was compelled to drop it. Last year I again made some examinations which confirmed my previous observations, but declined calling special attention …

An agreement between the consistory of the Reformed Church of Mattoax in Virginia, and Rev. Philip Phelps Agent for the Endowment of Hope Hope College in Michigan. "The amount needed to meet the most pressing wants of those settlers is twenty two hundred dollars; although several hundred dollars more could be used with great advantage in order to cover all the necessities." The funds came from the gifts to the college of Mrs. F. F. Chrystie (600) and Morris Jessup (1500).

A letter of John Roost to the Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, concerning his efforts in selling bonds out East for the funding of the Holland Harbor project. Selling bonds has been very difficult work but he encloses a check of $450 for bonds he sold in Albany. Roost does not enjoy his begging task at all.
