Detecting The Diatom Hab Genus Pseudo-Nitzschia In The Public Shellfish Harvesting Area Of Huntington Beach State Park Using A Nanopore Sequencing Approach, Megan Cevasco, Aramis Lawson, Zachary Padgett, Elena Renshaw

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause detrimental economic, ecological, and human health impacts. A major group of HAB taxa of particular interest in coastal shellfish harvesting grounds consists of domoic-acid producing species within the cosmopolitan marine diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotoxic amino acid that bioaccumulates in the tissue of filter-feeding shellfish and is responsible for amnesiac shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans and other marine life. To minimize human health risks and economically damaging shellfish harvesting closures, there is a need to develop proactive monitoring efforts that focus on determining the environmental conditions likely to support Pseudo-nitzschia HABs. …

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Freshwater resources including lakes and reservoirs are increasingly threatened by harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs). The scarcity of high spatial and temporal resolution data presents challenges for monitoring, predicting, and managing these blooms. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) equipped with water quality sensors represent a powerful tool to obtain high-resolution spatial data at Lake Wateree (LW), South Carolina (SC). LW is a hydroelectric reservoir commonly covered with extensive blooms of the benthic cyanobacteria Microseira (Lyngbya) wollei and Phormium sp., with the thickest mats in shallow coves.

The main objective of this study was to determine the best speed and duration of loiter …

Impacts Of Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) On Agriculture: A Short Communication, Debabrata Sahoo, Ibrahim Busari, Heather Nix, Sarah A. White

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

agriculture, which requires clean water, healthy soil, and adequate nutrients, is crucial to meet the growing demand for food and fiber. Over application of nutrients to meet demand has degraded surface water quality, leading to accelerated eutrophication. Cultural eutrophication is a process by which aquatic ecosystems such as ponds, lakes, and estuaries become so enriched with nutrients—primarily nitrogen and phosphorus—as to become unusable for safe consumption and ecological purposes. Eutrophication has intensified due to climate change. Increased temperatures, intense storms, and drought can drive the formation of eutrophic and hypereutrophic conditions. Hypereutrophication results in the rapid proliferation of algae and …

Utilizing Watershed-Based Planning As A Tool To Protect Source Water: A Case Study From The Lower Caw Caw Swamp, Kathryn Ellis, Eric Odom, Gregory Carbone

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

A watershed-based plan (WBP) is an example of a management tool that addresses nonpoint sources of pollution that affect surface water quality. We apply a simple spreadsheet tool to the Lower Caw Caw Swamp watershed in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to quantify the impact of modest management practices on water quality, and to examine how climate and land-use change could affect water quality in future decades. Three separate climate and land use scenarios are used to measure annual pollutant loads in the basin. Our analysis shows that E. coli loads in current conditions are largely attributed to anthropogenic sources of bacteria …

Introduction Of Vegetative And Reproductive Characters Into Trifolium Repens By Interspecific Hybridisation, A H. Marshall, T P.T Michaelson-Yeates, M Meredith, D H. Hides

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Interspecific hybridization between white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and ball clover (T.nigrescens) and Caucasian clover (T.ambiguum) is a means of improving the reproductive growth and persistency of T.repens. F1 hybrids between T.repens and T.nigrescens were produced without ovule culture and confirmed as true hybrids by chromosome counts, isoenzyme analysis and leaf markers. Their growth habit was generally intermediate between the two parents. After backcrossing to T.repens the BC1 and BC2 hybrids had more of the characteristics associated with T.repens though they retained some of the greater reproductive growth of …

Colchicine-Doubling Of Germinating Seedlings Of Interspecific Wildrye Hybrids, T A. Jones, D C. Nielson, H Jaussi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Colchicine has usually been applied to sterile clones of interspecific grass hybrids to restore fertility. However, when hybrids are partially fertile, colchicine can be applied to germinating seedlings. Four populations of Basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) X beardless wildrye (L. triticoides) were treated with a 0.2% colchicine solution to double chromosome number from 4x=28 to 8x=56. Doubling percentage was 28, 33, 42, and 44% of all root-tips examined for the four populations. When plants without doubled sectors were discarded, doubling percentage increased to 56, 68, 78, and 78%. Plants with doubled sectors have been placed in crossing blocks …

The Moderating Effect Of Race On The Relationship Between Perceived Supervisor Support And Burnout Amongst Public Health Workers, Douglas Diontay Gaffney, Jr

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent research has shown that burnout is a prevalent problem across the public health workforce. Burnout (BO) contributes to workplace challenges in turnover, employee performance, job satisfaction, and overall quality of life, and is more prevalent among racial minorities. Not only has BO been found to differ across racial demographics, employee perceptions about their level of support from supervisors (PSS) also differ. This quantitative study, informed by Meyer’s minority stress theory, examined Black-White differences in PSS and BO, and whether race moderated the relationship between PSS and BO. Data collected by De Beaumont’s 2017 national public health workforce interest and …

UNLABELLED: Tumor adaptation or selection is thought to underlie therapy resistance in glioma. To investigate longitudinal epigenetic evolution of gliomas in response to therapeutic pressure, we performed an epigenomic analysis of 132 matched initial and recurrent tumors from patients with IDH-wildtype (IDHwt) and IDH-mutant (IDHmut) glioma. IDHwt gliomas showed a stable epigenome over time with relatively low levels of global methylation. The epigenome of IDHmut gliomas showed initial high levels of genome-wide DNA methylation that was progressively reduced to levels similar to those of IDHwt tumors. Integration of epigenomics, gene expression, and functional genomics identified HOXD13 as a master regulator …

Testing Hypotheses Of Invasion Pathways Of The Ladybird Harmonia Axyridis Into And Across South Africa, Amy Collop, John S. Terblanche, Susana Clusella-Trullas, Jeff R. Garnas, Pius Bradicich, Minette Karsten

Faculty Publications

Harmonia axyridis is an invasive beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), native to Asia, that has established on four continents beyond its native range and was first observed in South Africa in 2001. Using microsatellite data and a comprehensive geographic coverage of international (17 locations) and South African (14 locations) beetle samples, we inferred the source of colonists invading South Africa and the beetle’s movement within the country. Genetic structure analyses suggest that this species’ populations in South Africa are derived from admixture between beetles originating from eastern North America (which acted as a bridgehead population) and another population not directly sampled in …
