The Anchor: 2024

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This is a series of autobiographical poems that delve into the role the audience plays in an individual's gender performance and how that can be helpful and harmful to identity, depending on the person performing and the people watching the performance. The concept of gender as a theatrical performance, the basis for many of the poems, is derived from the work of gender and queer theorists Judith Butler and Jack Halberstam. Additionally, these poems take inspiration from the works of creative writers Stacey Waite and Maia Kobabe and build on their work, which dissects and deconstructs gender as a social …

This course is an interdisciplinary survey that focuses on the issues of global health security. As shown in the COVID-19 pandemic, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious diseases, coupled with the threat of intentional release of dangerous pathogens, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges such as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Utah Lake is a large shallow eutrophic lake located in north central Utah. In recent years, the occurrence of frequent and sometimes toxic algal blooms has brought new urgency in understanding the cause and effects of eutrophication in Utah Lake. The drainage basin of Utah Lake is dominated by carbonate sedimentary materials and small pockets of phosphate rock occur. Given the bedrock geology and shallow nature of the lake, there has been uncertainty as to the natural trophic status and ecology of the lake prior to the settlement of Utah Valley. Interracial adoption, which is the practice of placing a child or youth of a specific race or ethnicity with a family of a contrasting race or ethnicity, has become more prevalent in today’s world because of the overrepresentation of children and youth of color in the child welfare system. Childhood maltreatment is a public health concern in the United States that affects families and children annually. Childhood maltreatment can be defined differently for every individual including; sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, or emotional maltreatment. Childhood maltreatment can have multiple negative effects including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and several internalizing or externalizing symptoms. Individuals who experience maltreatment in childhood are more likely to experience revictimization later in life, particularly in the form of peer victimization, bullying, gang affiliation, or substance use. The age of majority is when a person is considered legally responsible and culpable for their actions (Cox et al., 2022). Since the advent of the legal system, there seems to be no consensus regarding the ideal age of majority. This is demonstrated by the age varying from state to state and nationally. In the United States, the age of majority has been as low as 14 years old. With the rising consumer demand for more natural skincare products, botanical ingredients have become more prevalent in skincare products. Skincare products with botanical properties are being preferred over those with chemical properties due to their biological origins. However, there are debates as to why botanical products are being used widespread and if they are safe to use. The safety of ingredients within cosmetics is observed by multiple regulatory systems throughout the world. Humans are storytelling creatures. We use stories to communicate ideas in a memorable and engaging way, inspire people to believe in the best version of themselves, find truth in our legal system, empathize with experiences different than our own, and entertain ourselves for hours on end. Recent neuroscience proposes that the human mind thinks through stories. Narrative is the technical and broad term for story, defined as a series of actions and events that unfold over time according to proper cause and effect. Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) manages a herd of feral horses (Equus caballus) which was present on the landscape prior to the establishment of the park. The population presents a unique scenario in that it has experienced fairly intensive and well-documented management since the park's establishment, including herd size reductions, intentional introduction of diversity, and subsequent attempts to remove introduced lineages. This provides an interesting case study on the genetic effects of diverse evolutionary forces on an isolated feral population. To provide actionable information about the safety and efficacy of new medications, clinical trials should be designed to test outcomes that patients find meaningful. This imperative is increasingly acknowledged by the scientific community and regulatory authorities and in recent years has been enshrined in regulatory guidance documents for industry; however, clinical trials often fail to adequately address patient priorities. Evidence suggests that partnerships between researchers and patient communities may result in clinical trials that better reflect the patient experience, but there are few successful models of such partnerships. People suffering from neurodegenerative diseases need a viable option to help slow the progression of their symptoms and improve remaining cognitive function because brain problems can greatly limit basic body function such as balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function which steadily declines quality of life. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is an experimental treatment that has shown promise in helping slow or stop the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
