Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Interferon-induced Transmembrane Protein 3 (IFITM3) plays a substantial role in the immune system by repressing viral entry into host cells and restricting virus replication. Recent research suggests that IFITM3/rs34481144 and IFITM3/rs12252 contribute to susceptibility to viral infections across populations dependent on their population frequencies, which needs further clarification. Here, we conducted a population-based study to determine the prevalence of two regulator SNPs in the Turkish population and evaluated genotype and allele frequencies in individuals stratified into groups based on a pilot survey conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tetra-Primer Arms PCR (TPA-PCR) assays and Sanger sequencing methods were used for …

Phenotypic Diversity For Morpho-Agronomic Traits In The Us Proso Millet (Panicum Miliaceum L.) Core Collection, Santosh G. Rajput, Rituraj Khound, Dipak K. Santra
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) is a short-season annual crop known for high water-use efficiency and drought tolerance. The low water requirement makes this ancient grain an excellent rotational crop for the winter wheat-based dryland cropping system in theHigh Plains of theUnited States. The genetic base of the commonly grown US cultivars is very narrow. Assessment of proso millet germplasm for agronomic traits is essential for its efficient utilization in the genetic improvement of this crop. The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the US proso millet germplasm based on nine important morpho-agronomic traits and (2) classify …
How Social Movements Have Influenced Child Custody Standards Over Time, Victoria Miller
How Social Movements Have Influenced Child Custody Standards Over Time, Victoria Miller
Honors Theses
Child custody standards have evolved over time due to societal attitude shifts regarding gender roles. The stereotypes present within the decision-making process of child custody laws have been challenged repeatedly in order to attack sexism within the laws. Child custody decisions are important for the child and family in question, because whichever parental guardian has custody over the child has the legal authority to make life changing choices for the child. These choices can include education, religion, and the environment the child grows and develops in. Parental choices can affect a child's mental and physical well-being, which makes it crucial …

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
This dissertation addresses a significant gap in existing research by exploring lived experiences of cisgender female adolescents (Grades 7–12) diagnosed with emotional disturbance (ED) in the U.S. Current statistics indicate that 28% of students in special education with an ED diagnosis are girls; yet, their perspectives remain largely absent from scholarly discourse. Rooted in critical constructivism, critical feminist theory, and dis/ability studies and critical race theory (DisCrit), this qualitative study aims to elucidate insights that can enhance academic success and elevate high school graduation rates for this demographic. This research investigates the experiences of seven participants from New England, representing …
Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen
Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The discourse on subjectivity, a central theme in philosophy, has garnered attention from thinkers like Heidegger and Foucault. Heidegger critiques subjectivity through a lens of metaphysics and ontology, while Foucault examines it as a social construct. This thesis aims to analyze their critiques and find common ground. The first chapter delves into Heidegger's critique of Cartesian subject and subject-object dualism in Being and Time and Being and Truth, arguing it obstructs a comprehensive understanding of human existence. In the second chapter, Foucault's analysis of subjectification, notably in The History of Sexuality, illustrates how the process of subjectification shapes self-knowledge and …
Comparative Landscape Genetics And Dynamics In Demography Within Sympatric Ursids In Southeast Alaska, Philip Russell Douchinsky
Comparative Landscape Genetics And Dynamics In Demography Within Sympatric Ursids In Southeast Alaska, Philip Russell Douchinsky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The landscape along the northwest coast of North America structures species populations in and around Southeast Alaska. Brown bears (Ursus arctos) and American black bears (U. americanus) are sympatric in this region. They are similarly sized omnivores and interspecific competition directly affects the resources available to each species as brown bears are larger, more aggressive, and can competitively exclude; however, black bears can better utilize dispersed food sources. Within this system I asked two questions about brown and black bears in Southeast Alaska. The first question had two parts; how has the environment structured gene flow in both species, and …

Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera
Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Periodization of the annual training plan is a commonly utilized tool within the strength and conditioning community. Within the periodized plan, load is a key variable that is often manipulated to optimize strength development. At the present moment, a common model for load prescription involves the use of a percentage-based training (PBT) plan. However, inherent problems within a PBT loading model may reduce the accuracy of the training stimulus due to various reasons including atypical one repetition maximum (1RM) performance, strength improvements, or an acute decrease in an individual’s ability to perform. Thus, autoregulatory loading models may be a …
Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler
Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler
Honors College Theses
College students of health-related majors are sometimes assumed to have greater health literacy. The belief can be attributed to the students taking classes discussing health problems, diseases, risk factors, medical management, nutrition, and exercise. How often the health classes discuss type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains undetermined; therefore, the amount of knowledge and beliefs health students have of T2D is unknown. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between students' majors, health beliefs about T2D, and engagement in behavioral risk factors at a mid-size regional public university. A quantitative, non-experimental, survey design was chosen, and responses were obtained …
Ammonium Chemotaxis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Gabela Nelson
Ammonium Chemotaxis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Gabela Nelson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Analysis of ammonium chemotaxis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is largely hindered, compared to that of phototaxis, despite equal importance on flagellated microalgal physiology. A major contribution of this shortfall is the lack of proper assay method. We developed a simple Petri dish assay method in which light is homogenously exposed while patterns of the cellular migration are tracked with a function of time. Using the method, new findings were revealed. First, this research presented that a strain lacking the eyespot organelle required for light gradient-sensing exhibits similar chemotactic behavior compared to a wild-type strain, suggesting Chlamydomonas sense an ammonium gradient not …

The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala
The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala
Senior Honors Theses
Silence and solitude as a spiritual discipline is seen across many different worldviews including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Humanism, and can be exercised alongside disciplines like prayer, meditation, and mindfulness. Each worldview has a unique purpose in why silence and solitude is practiced such as to commune with God, to prepare one’s heart for times of prayer, to avoid suffering, to experience revelations, and to find peace in an anxious world. Loneliness stems from unmet expectations of social interactions that lead to aversion in one’s current relationships and within themselves. Understanding the purpose of silence and solitude leads to the …
Exploring Strategies To Increase Genomic Literacy And Integrate Genomic Medicine Education Into Graduate Medical Education Programs: A Multi-Case Qualitative Study, Vinaya S. Murthy
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Background: Some predict that genomic sequencing will become fully integrated into standard medical care within the next ten years, making genomic testing as routine as complete blood counts (Green et al., 2020; McCauley et al., 2017). Non-geneticist physicians, whose practices are being increasingly influenced by genomic medicine (GM), need to be knowledgeable and confident in GM to bridge the gap in patient access and quality of care due to genomic workforce shortages.
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify ways to accelerate adoption of GM in clinical practice by studying graduate medical education (GME) training programs. …

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and debilitating psychiatric disorder that may occur in individuals exposed to traumatic events such as accidents, interpersonal violence, war, combat, or natural disasters. Additionally, PTSD has been implicated in the development of a variety of chronic conditions including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, suggesting that the biological alterations associated with the disorder can manifest themselves as chronic diseases in those suffering from PTSD. The biological underpinnings of the disorder are not well understood. Gene expression studies can illuminate the complex physiology of PTSD reflecting the embodiment of trauma, i.e., the process in which traumatic …

Characterization Of Cellular Metabolism Regulation By The Transcription Factor Centromere Binding Factor 1 (Cbf1), Spencer Ellsworth
Characterization Of Cellular Metabolism Regulation By The Transcription Factor Centromere Binding Factor 1 (Cbf1), Spencer Ellsworth
Theses and Dissertations
Centromere binding factor 1 (Cbf1) is a transcription factor that controls the transcription of many genes involved in cellular respiration and lipid biogenesis and, as such, has been associated with hypolipidemia in humans. It is a known substrate for PAS kinase, which phosphorylates Cbf1 and alters its activity. Our hypothesis is that this phosphorylation affects the genes it regulates and the DNA motifs it binds to, perhaps due to different transcription complexes being formed. In this study, we conduct a chromatin immunoprecipitation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae to determine what genes and DNA motifs Cbf1 binds to in its wild type versus …

Distinguishing Between Symptom Presence And Severity Using A Two-Part Sequential Model, Luiza Ferreira Pradera
Distinguishing Between Symptom Presence And Severity Using A Two-Part Sequential Model, Luiza Ferreira Pradera
Theses and Dissertations
Most symptom measures either implicitly or explicitly distinguish between symptom presence and symptom severity. For example, item 2 on the PHQ-9, a commonly used measure of depressive symptoms, asks respondents to rate how much they have been 'feeling down, depressed, or hopeless.' The response options are 0 (Not at all), 1 (Several Days), 2 (More than half the days), and 3 (Nearly every day). Answering 0 indicates that the symptom is not present, and any response greater than 0 suggests the symptom is present. Higher values indicate higher severity of the symptom. Although the response options distinguish between symptom presence …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
In this review, we cover the current understanding of BRAF mutations and associated clinical characteristics in patients with metastatic NSCLC, approved and emerging treatment options, BRAF sequencing approaches, and unmet needs. The BRAFV600E mutation confers constitutive activity of the MAPK pathway, leading to enhanced growth, proliferation, and survival of tumor cells. Testing for BRAF mutations enables patients to be treated with therapies that directly target BRAFV600E and the MAPK pathway, but BRAF testing lags behind other oncogene testing in metastatic NSCLC. Additional therapies targeting BRAFV600E mutations provide options for patients with metastatic NSCLC. Emerging therapies and combinations under investigation could …

The alternative splicing of PML precursor mRNA gives rise to various PML isoforms, yet their expression profile in breast cancer cells remains uncharted. We discovered that PML1 is the most abundant isoform in all breast cancer subtypes, and its expression is associated with unfavorable prognosis in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers. PML depletion reduces cell proliferation, invasion, and stemness, while heterologous PML1 expression augments these processes and fuels tumor growth and resistance to fulvestrant, an FDA-approved drug for ER+ breast cancer, in a mouse model. Moreover, PML1, rather than the well-known tumor suppressor isoform PML4, rescues the proliferation of PML …

The objective of this project is to design a process to produce an mRNA influenza vaccine that serves as an alternative to conventional influenza vaccines, replacing current options with innovative mRNA technologies. Given that older populations are most likely to follow up on immunizations consistently, and the increasing average age worldwide, the market for this project appears to be expanding in the next 80 years. Additionally, experts predict more frequent mutations and outbreaks of viral disease from a variety of factors including globalization and global temperature trends. Rapid response to these viral outbreaks will continue to be as, or even …
