Improved Hydrologic Modeling And Geophysical Imaging Of Critical Zones: Incorporating Structural And Temporal Constraints, Hang Chen

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The Earth's critical zone (CZ) is a life-sustaining layer extending from the canopy of the tree to the bottom of the active groundwater circulation, providing valuable resources to terrestrial life, including nutrients, minerals, and fresh water. There are many challenges in studying various processes within and the function of the CZ. This dissertation addresses two common challenges in studying the CZ hydrology and watershed function, which are critical for a predictive understanding of the water dynamics in mountainous terrain and for an informed management of future water resources under rapid climate change. These challenges include (1) accurate quantification of hydrological …

Verifying The Taxonomic Validity And Resolving The Subspecific Boundaries Of The Lomatium Foeniculaceum Complex, Daniel Botello May 2024

Verifying The Taxonomic Validity And Resolving The Subspecific Boundaries Of The Lomatium Foeniculaceum Complex, Daniel Botello

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Plant species in western North America historically have been delimited using morphological differences and geographic distribution of the species’ populations. Historically, the subspecies rank was relegated to populations that are geographically coherent but morphologically intergradient at areas of sympatry, resulting in doubts on the taxonomic validity and usefulness of the subspecific rank. The Lomatium foeniculaceum complex of the Perennial Endemic North American clade (PENA) of Apiaceae is present across much of the Great Plains and Intermountain Region, and as far north as northeast British Columbia. It is comprised of five subspecies and is the most widely distributed complex in the …

Cyanide Abundance Of Highly Aqueously Altered Cm Chondrites: Insight For Asteroid Bennu, Rachel A. Reichow

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Asteroids, and the meteorites that come from them, retained the composition of the early Solar System and can give us insight to the processes that lead to the origin of life. The current NASA mission, OSIRIS-REx, has returned asteroid samples from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu. This asteroid is thought to be similar in composition to highly aqueously altered meteorites including CM1 and CM1/2 meteorites. Cyanide is thought to be an important molecule for prebiotic chemistry. Simple cyanide salts would have been the most accessible form of cyanide for reactions to occur; however, they may have recombined to form different metal-cyanide …

Agricultural Irrigation Water Quality In The Lower Boise River Basin: A Quantitative Assessment Of Canal Ecosystem Metabolism And Escherichia Coli Spatiotemporal Variability, Reed Chasmar

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Irrigation canals are pervasive in agricultural landscapes. Despite their vast spatial extent and significant volumetric impact on the hydrologic cycle, the role of irrigation canals as intermittent channels within a river network, as well as their various functions (e.g., supporting aquatic ecosystems, transporting microbial communities, altering the carbon cycle), are not well understood. Microbial water quality and aquatic ecosystem metabolism represent two mechanisms to assess stream channels that can provide new insights into the complex dynamics and spatiotemporal patterns that exist in irrigation canals, which has relevance for both human health and for the field of stream ecology. The goal …

Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure: Non-Offending Fathers, Mckayla Marie Harrison May 2024

Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure: Non-Offending Fathers, Mckayla Marie Harrison

Dissertations

Rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are difficult to track due to the taboo nature and stigma surrounding the topic (McElvaney & Nixon, 2020). To address this nationwide crisis, mental health clinicians are relied upon to educate, assess, and treat accordingly. Yet, despite the ubiquitous nature of CSA, existing research has not yet examined non-offending fathers’ experience, a major support system and means of healing for children. This qualitative phenomenological study sought to capture the descriptions of non-offending fathers with children that have disclosed sexual abuse in an effort to better understand the struggles and needs for these fathers, as …

The Effect Of Direct Current Stimulation On The Plasticity Of Cerebellar Purkinje Cell, Emily Graves May 2024

The Effect Of Direct Current Stimulation On The Plasticity Of Cerebellar Purkinje Cell, Emily Graves

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

The cerebellum plays an essential role in movement coordination and balance, and its cortex comprises three layers: the granule cell layer, Purkinje cell layer, and molecular layer. The axons of granule cells, parallel fibers, synapse onto the dendrites of the Purkinje cell. Purkinje cells are the primary inhibitory output of the cerebellar cortex to the deep cerebellar nuclei. Damage to the cerebellum or the related pathway can lead to cerebellar ataxia. Cerebellar ataxia can include abnormal extremity movements, eye and gait incoordination, and loss of balance. Non-invasive brain therapy, transcranial direct current stimulation (DCS), has shown potential benefit to patients …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

While the incidence of cervical cancer has dropped in high-income countries due to organized cytology-based screening programs, it remains the leading cause of cancer death among women in Eastern Africa. Therefore, the World Health Organization(WHO) now urges providers to transition from widely prevalent but low-performance visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) screening to primary human papillomavirus(HPV) DNA testing. Due to high HPV prevalence, effective triage tests are needed to identify those lesions likely to progress and so avoid over-treatment. To identify the optimal cost-effective strategy, we compared the VIA screen-and-treat approach to primary HPV DNA testing with p16/Ki67 dual-stain cytology …
