Investigating The Presence Of Patented In Vitro Models For Cancer-Nerve Crosstalk Methods, Christoff Hauptmann
Investigating The Presence Of Patented In Vitro Models For Cancer-Nerve Crosstalk Methods, Christoff Hauptmann
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this research project is to investigate the presence of patented in vitro models for perineural invasion (PNI) and tumor innervation, the two most prominent modes of cancer-nerve crosstalk that play an active role in cancer initiation and progression. PNI occurs through a positive feedback loop in which cancer cells invade passive nerves to metastasize. Tumor innervation is the process where tumor cells attract nearby nerves to the tumor microenvironment (TME) for tumor growth and metastasis. These crosstalk paths have been established for many types of cancer and result in poor patient prognosis. Recently, in vitro models have …

Gene therapies are emerging as powerful tools for treating genetic diseases and cancers, offering the potential for a permanent cure. Hemophilia B, affecting approximately 6,000 men in the U.S., results from a deficiency in coagulation factor IX protein (FIX), which is crucial for blood clotting. A substantial portion of patients, over 40%, suffer from severe hemophilia B, experiencing spontaneous, prolonged bleeding. Current prophylactic treatments involve frequent coagulation factor infusions, yet a curative approach would alleviate this burden. Gene editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas systems show promise for correcting genetic mutations, but the diverse nature of factor IX gene (F9) …

Threat Modeling Based On A Design Basis Threat For Nuclear Security, Abu Zafor Mohammad Salahuddin, Altab Hossain, Mohammad Shawkat Akbar
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Identification of the design basis threat (DBT) of a nuclear facility is an important factor of overall safety, for which the operator is mainly responsible per the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency. As threat levels increase especially threats beyond the DBT-the responsibility of the state also increases. In recent years, only a few studies on nuclear security and DBTs have comprehensively detailed the full spectrum of nuclear facilities in a nation. Thus, this paper presents the correlation between an actual threat and the DBT. The objectives of the study are to assist in establishing physical protection system (PPS) …

The Myth Of Dna Trade Secrecy, Jacob S. Sherkow
The Myth Of Dna Trade Secrecy, Jacob S. Sherkow
UC Law Journal
Are DNA sequences subject to trade secrecy protection? At least three decades of scholarship has assumed so even while there is no explicit statutory authority directly on point and very few reported decisions in the area. And yet, an investigation into the elements of trade secrecy law— read in light of rapid advances in DNA and genomic sequencing—suggests the answer is probably, no. Those advances include the rise of cheap, accurate, easy, fast, and readily available DNA sequencing services, including the recent availability of whole human genome sequencing for less than a monthly cell phone bill. This cuts against some …

The Role Of Myocardin And Its Effector Proteins In Tgf-Β Induced Cytoskeletal Remodeling Of Ipf Fibroblasts, Khadijat Abolore Olawuyi
Biotechnology Theses
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by thickening and stiffness around the air sacs. Approved treatments like nintedanib and pirfenidone slow disease progression in IPF and often have tolerability issues. More research is needed to fully grasp the mechanisms behind abnormal cytoskeletal changes in lung cells, notably fibroblasts and epithelial cells, and their role in fibrosis progression. Previous studies suggest that myocardin expression and function, traditionally limited to smooth/cardiac development in physiology, become active in pathophysiological conditions like pleural fibrosis. Myocardin's role in liver and kidney fibrosis is known, but its involvement in IPF is unclear. To get more insights, …

Haaland V. Brackeen And Mancari: On History, Taking Children, And The Right-Wing Assault On Indigenous Sovereignty, Laura Briggs
Connecticut Law Review
In June 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) of 1978 in Haaland v. Brackeen, making it harder for (some) Indigenous families and communities to lose their children. The decision left one key question unanswered, however: whether protections specifically for American Indian households served as an illegitimate “racial” preference. Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s opinion for the majority argued that the petitioners lacked standing to raise this issue. Thus, the Court left the door open to continuing challenges by those who have an interest in using ICWA’s cute children and clean-cut evangelical Christian parents …

Beetroot juice has become a very popular supplement to try to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. Beetroot juice contains nitrates which is converted in body into nitric oxide, a vasodilator. This allows for more blood flow to exercising muscles. Many studies have been conducted to see if beetroot supplementation will affect performance and cardiorespiratory parameters during different types of exercise. However, much of the literature has conflicting results. For this study, seven articles were examined to determine if acute beetroot supplementation will affect oxygen consumption and exercise performance of active individuals during submaximal exercise. Of these studies, most of them did see …

Several drugs have a limited ability to dissolve in water, making it challenging for them to be absorbed by the body and reach their intended tissues. Although silicon can increase hydrophobicity it is not well known. By incorporating silicon into the drug's composition, its solubility and permeability will increase, enabling effective absorption and widespread distribution throughout the body. The goal of this research is the development of 4-silicon 1,7 heptene (diallylsilane) which incorporates silicon into its structure. The approach to achieve this goal will be to use dichlorosilane as an electrophile and react it with allyl magnesium bromide (CH2CHCH2MgBr), a …

The XX/XY sex chromosome system governs the sex determination of many organisms, where female individuals typically possess the XX sex chromosome pair and male individuals possess the XY pair. However, in some species, the Y chromosome is degraded due to reduced recombination and genetic processes that results in the loss of gene content. Dosage compensation (DC) mechanisms evolve to counteract the significant loss of one copy of genes and serves to maintain the level of gene expression before the loss of one copy of genes. This study will explore how sex-biased gene expression may affect DC evolution by observing the …

Stem Cell Potency: Automated Vs. Manual Segmentation In Adipogenic Differentiation, Zachary Armstrong
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Important cell processes can be captured and analyzed with live-cell imaging followed by computational analysis. Current methods of microscopy image analysis involve manually segmenting cells, often done by multiple researchers, which is time-consuming and can limit the accuracy and throughput of the desired data. By implementing deep learning algorithms, captured images can be automatically segmented which greatly reduces the time required to do so and can possibly improve the accuracy of desired data. A newly developed deep learning algorithm pipeline, Lipid Locator, will be utilized to automatically segment acquired images of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC). More specifically, ADSC with fluorescently …

In 1971, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) and the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) agreed to prevent injury and deception to the consumer in advertising, detailing their respective roles in a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”). The MOU has been amended and an addendum added since 1971, but the material provisions have remained consistent for over a half-century. The FTC has regulatory authority over fast food advertising while the FDA regulates fast food, which creates a proverbial fork in the road. The fork in the road widens when considering the FDA has an active role in curbing the obesity epidemic through …
