Deep Learning Based Soil Moisture Retrieval Using Gnss-R Observations From Cygnss, M M Nabi May 2024

Deep Learning Based Soil Moisture Retrieval Using Gnss-R Observations From Cygnss, M M Nabi

Theses and Dissertations

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission has grown substantial attention within the land remote sensing community for estimating soil moisture (SM), wind speed, flood extent, and precipitation by using the Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique. CYGNSS constellation generates important earth surface information called Delay-Doppler Maps (DDMs) from GNSS reflection measurements. Many previous findings considered only designed features from CYGNSS DDMs, such as the peak value of DDMs, whereas the whole DDMs are affected by SM, topography, inundation, and overlying vegetation. This dissertation explores a deep learning approach for estimating SM by …

The thesis highlights Black Deltans’ experiences and understandings of food and foodways to provide a nuanced picture of how residents interpret, negotiate, and challenge the region’s unequal food geographies in light of a longer history …

Evaluating Simulated Tarnished Plant Bug Damage During Late Bloom On Cotton Yield, Seth Thomas Permenter May 2024

Evaluating Simulated Tarnished Plant Bug Damage During Late Bloom On Cotton Yield, Seth Thomas Permenter

Theses and Dissertations

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is an important economic pest of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (L.), in the Midsouth region of the United States. Continuous season long infestations may result in four or more insecticide applications per growing season. However, late season applications may only be preventing minor losses when compared to overall yield. Results from this study suggest an opportunity to increase thresholds and potentially eliminate one to two insecticide applications in late bloom. Results from this experiment show no significant differences in yield when all square removal levels were simulated in the fourth and fifth …

Investigating The Pretesting Effect Under Cognitive Load Through Increased Playback Speed, Oscar Ramirez Perez May 2024

Investigating The Pretesting Effect Under Cognitive Load Through Increased Playback Speed, Oscar Ramirez Perez

Theses and Dissertations

Pretesting prior to a study session has been shown to benefit memory for pretested information compared to traditional study. While previous research has not found a detriment to non-pretested but related material, it is possible that taxing attention by increasing the playback speed of presented material could reveal such impairments. The current study (N = 239) compared multiple-choice learning from educational videos at 1x, 1.5x, and 2x speeds. Three videos (one at each speed) were presented after a pretest, for which half of the tested material was pretested, and half was not (non-pretested related). Another three videos were presented without …

A Determination Of Host Receptors To Choline-Binding Proteins Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Milisen Tvarkunas May 2024

A Determination Of Host Receptors To Choline-Binding Proteins Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Milisen Tvarkunas

Theses and Dissertations

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), a gram-positive bacterium, is commensal to the human nasopharynx. It is also a common cause of respiratory tract infections and multiple invasive diseases worldwide. Pneumococci attach to the nasopharynx, lung, and vascular endothelial cells, which contributes to colonization as well as to the development of pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Choline binding proteins (CBPs) are a unique set of cell wall proteins conserved within pneumococci. CBPs bind noncovalently to the phosphocholine of the cell wall through choline binding domains. The choline binding domains of the CBPs are highly conserved; however, they are diverse in their affinities and functions …

Identity Status And Identity Style In The Emo Subculture: Exploring Identity Between Emo Vs. Non-Emo Emerging Adults, Melanie Rebekah Uggen

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adulthood can be viewed as a time of exploration and experimentation for college-aged adults (Arnett, 2000). As individuals begin trying on their possible selves as they explore personal identity, they can gravitate to peer groups that fit their interests. For some, that can mean being drawn to the emo subculture. This subculture focuses on its fashion, often based on dyed black hair, dark clothing, studded accessories, and black eyeliner (Chernoff & Widdicombe, 2015), centered around music with lyrics often interpreted as depressive or angst?ridden. Emo subculture has been subject to criticism and stereotypes, especially those with mental health themes …

Acoustofluidic Scanning Fluorescence Nanoscopy With A Large Field Of View, Geonsoo Jin, Neil Upreti, Joseph Rich, Jianping Xia, Chenglong Zhao, Tony Jun Huang

Faculty Publications

Large-field nanoscale fluorescence imaging is invaluable for many applications, such as imaging subcellular structures, visualizing protein interactions, and high-resolution tissue imaging. Unfortunately, conventional fluorescence microscopy requires a trade-off between resolution and field of view due to the nature of the optics used to form the image. To overcome this barrier, we developed an acoustofluidic scanning fluorescence nanoscope that simultaneously achieves superior resolution, a large field of view, and strong fluorescent signals. The acoustofluidic scanning fluorescence nanoscope utilizes the superresolution capabilities of microspheres that are controlled by a programmable acoustofluidic device for rapid fluorescence enhancement and imaging. The acoustofluidic scanning fluorescence …
