Combinatorial Studies Of Noble Metal Catalysts For Carbon Utilization, Natalie Leong Page May 2024

Combinatorial Studies Of Noble Metal Catalysts For Carbon Utilization, Natalie Leong Page

Theses and Dissertations

Electrocatalysts demonstrate significant promise for sustainable processes like carbon capture and generating recycled carbon fuels which are needed to achieve net zero carbon emissions. However, the commercialization of these processes is limited by several factors, one of which is the high cost of catalysts. The discovery and development of cheaper alternatives has been difficult due to constraints in experimental methodologies, scalability limitations, and a lack of understanding of reaction mechanisms. Within this dissertation is the development of a novel scanning electrochemical system and its implementation for high-throughput data generation from combinatorially sputtered material libraries. Combinatorial Pd-Au alloys were investigated for …

Despite tremendous efforts in the past decades, relationships among main avian lineages remain heavily debated without a clear resolution. Discrepancies have been attributed to diversity of species sampled, phylogenetic method and the choice of genomic regions1–3. Here we address these issues by analysing the genomes of 363 bird species4 (218 taxonomic families, 92% of total). Using intergenic regions and coalescent methods, we present a well-supported tree but also a marked degree of discordance. The tree confirms that Neoaves experienced rapid radiation at or near the Cretaceous–Palaeogene boundary. Sufficient loci rather than extensive taxon sampling were more effective …

Feeling Otherwise: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Queer And Trans Youth Of Color Who Create And Embody Fursonas, Hazel Ali Zaman

Dissertations and Theses

Queer and trans youth of color are often the target of surveillance, bullying, discrimination, and abuse. However, in an attempt to navigate such violent and discriminatory circumstances, the queer and trans youth of color in this dissertation found refuge in furry art and performances, both online and offline, where they were able to express themselves freely and thus acquire a sense of belonging among others with similar experiences. In this dissertation, "a furry" is used to refer to an individual who self-identifies as one who has an affinity for anthropomorphic animal characters. A common practice among furries is creating a …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to improve overall patient satisfaction scores, patient safety and education retention postoperatively. The aim is to provide patients with the opportunity to review their discharge instructions and seek clarification prior to their procedure.

Background: Roughly 75 million endoscopies are conducted annually in the United States. The majority, 68%, are gastrointestinal endoscopies. Routine endoscopy procedures such as a colonoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy utilize moderate sedation which is often a combination of midazolam and fentanyl. This combination reduces anxiety and discomfort during the procedure. The amnesic effects …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) accounts for more than 90% of all pancreatic cancers and is the most fatal of all cancers. The treatment response from combination chemotherapies is far from satisfactory and surgery remains the mainstay of curative strategies. These challenges warrant identifying effective treatments for combating this deadly cancer. PDAC tumor progression is associated with the robust activation of the coagulation system. Notably, cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a significant risk factor in PDAC. CAT is a concept whereby cancer cells promote thromboembolism, primarily venous thromboembolism (VTE). Of all cancer types, PDAC is associated with the highest risk of developing …

The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future1–3. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time4,5. Here we synthesized resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time–frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land-use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more …

Dynamic Cbct Imaging Using Prior Model-Free Spatiotemporal Implicit Neural Representation (Pmf-Stinr), Hua-Chieh Shao, Tielige Mengke, Tinsu Pan, You Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective. Dynamic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can capture high-spatial-resolution, time-varying images for motion monitoring, patient setup, and adaptive planning of radiotherapy. However, dynamic CBCT reconstruction is an extremely ill-posed spatiotemporal inverse problem, as each CBCT volume in the dynamic sequence is only captured by one or a few x-ray projections, due to the slow gantry rotation speed and the fast anatomical motion (e.g. breathing).Approach. We developed a machine learning-based technique, prior-model-free spatiotemporal implicit neural representation (PMF-STINR), to reconstruct dynamic CBCTs from sequentially acquired x-ray projections. PMF-STINR employs a joint image reconstruction and registration approach to address the …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Indian jujube displays genetic diversity and does not prominently display minute morphometric variations, and this makes correct identification a difficult and long-term task. However, little work has been conducted to bring jujube cultivars into domestication. So, the present study aimed to evaluate eleven cultivars of Indian jujube in terms of the fruit’s morphometric characteristics, as well as molecular marker studies by plastidial megakaryocyte-associated tyrosine kinase (matK) barcoding and inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) markers for species differentiation, identification, and relationships among Indian jujube cultivars. The results of the morphometric characteristics showed that the mean geometric diameter, surface area, sphericity, sphericity ratio, …

The ATPase family AAA+ domain containing 2 (ATAD2) protein and its paralog ATAD2B have a C-terminal bromodomain (BRD) that functions as a reader of acetylated lysine residues on histone proteins. Using a structure–function approach, we investigated the ability of the ATAD2/B BRDs to select acetylated lysine among multiple histone post-translational modifications. The ATAD2B BRD can bind acetylated histone ligands that also contain adjacent methylation or phosphorylation marks, while the presence of these modifications significantly weakened the acetyllysine binding activity of the ATAD2 BRD. Our structural studies provide mechanistic insights into how ATAD2/B BRD-binding pocket residues coordinate the acetyllysine group in …

In precision medicine, both predicting the disease susceptibility of an individual and forecasting its disease-free survival are areas of key research. Besides the classical epidemiological predictor variables, data from multiple (omic) platforms are increasingly available. To integrate this wealth of information, we propose new methodology to combine both cooperative learning, a recent approach to leverage the predictive power of several datasets, and polygenic hazard score models. Polygenic hazard score models provide a practitioner with a more differentiated view of the predicted disease-free survival than the one given by merely a point estimate, for instance computed with a polygenic risk score. …

Publications and Research

Efficacy of Ferula L. Species Extracts from Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses One of the challenges facing both the domestic and international pharmaceutical industries is the limited selection and suboptimal efficacy of available antiviral drugs. The high mutational variability of influenza viruses contributes to rapid acquisition of drug resistance, which diminishes or nullifies the effectiveness of existing therapies, thereby necessitating the exploration for novel therapeutics. This study aimed to assess the antiviral activities of three species of the genus Ferula— indigenous to the Republic of Tajikistan—against influenza strains A/Vladivostok/2/09 (H1N1) and A/Almaty/8/98 (H3N2). The investigation revealed that phytochemical constituents—specifically, root …

The interaction between T-cell receptors (TCRs) and peptides (epitopes) presented by major histocompatibility complex molecules (MHC) is fundamental to the immune response. Accurate prediction of TCR–epitope interactions is crucial for advancing the understanding of various diseases and their prevention and treatment. Existing methods primarily rely on sequence-based approaches, overlooking the inherent topology structure of TCR–epitope interaction networks. In this study, we present , a novel heterogeneous Graph neural network model based on inductive learning to capture the topological structure between TCRs and Epitopes. Furthermore, we address the challenge of constructing negative samples within the graph by proposing a dynamic edge …

Phase separation and percolation contribute to phase transitions of multivalent macromolecules. Contributions of percolation are evident through the viscoelasticity of condensates and through the formation of heterogeneous distributions of nano- and mesoscale pre-percolation clusters in sub-saturated solutions. Here, we show that clusters formed in sub-saturated solutions of FET (FUS-EWSR1-TAF15) proteins are affected differently by glutamate versus chloride. These differences on the nanoscale, gleaned using a suite of methods deployed across a wide range of protein concentrations, are prevalent and can be unmasked even though the driving forces for phase separation remain unchanged in glutamate versus chloride. Strikingly, differences in anion-mediated …

Health Equity Engineering: Optimizing Hope For A New Generation Of Healthcare, Felicity T Enders, Joyce E Balls-Berry, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Medical researchers are increasingly prioritizing the inclusion of underserved communities in clinical studies. However, mere inclusion is not enough. People from underserved communities frequently experience chronic stress that may lead to accelerated biological aging and early morbidity and mortality. It is our hope and intent that the medical community come together to engineer improved health outcomes for vulnerable populations. Here, we introduce Health Equity Engineering (HEE), a comprehensive scientific framework to guide research on the development of tools to identify individuals at risk of poor health outcomes due to chronic stress, the integration of these tools within existing healthcare system …

Simulation Of Polymerization On Surfaces: Implications For Abiogenesis, Sylvia Greene May 2024

Simulation Of Polymerization On Surfaces: Implications For Abiogenesis, Sylvia Greene

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

How did life arise from the prebiotic conditions of the early earth? This problem has vexed scientists for decades with no consensus on its solution. Significant spontaneous formation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids in the aqueous phase appears to be improbable due to thermodynamic constraints. It has been proposed that mineral surfaces could have served as a catalyst for the initial formation of biopolymers. However, the feasibility of this mechanism has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, a particle simulation of polypeptide formation on surfaces is developed to assess the feasibility of this mechanism. Elementary processes …

The Hodgkin-Huxley Model For Neuron Action Potentials: A Computational Study, Uditi Chandrashekhar May 2024

The Hodgkin-Huxley Model For Neuron Action Potentials: A Computational Study, Uditi Chandrashekhar

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

Neurons are the fundamental units of the nervous system that receive stimuli as signals and pass on this information to other cells in different parts of the body. An action potential refers to the transmission of the electrical nerve impulse along the neuron. In their seminal work published in 1952, Alan L. Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley proposed a mathematical model of neuronal membrane action potentials based on a series of experiments they conducted using the giant squid neuron. This thesis is a study of the nature of the action potential used to transfer signals along the neuron based on the …
