Managing Perforating Internal Root Resorption Non-Surgically: A Report Of 2 Cases And A Review Of The Literature, Joseph C. Stern Dds
Managing Perforating Internal Root Resorption Non-Surgically: A Report Of 2 Cases And A Review Of The Literature, Joseph C. Stern Dds
The New York State Dental Journal
Aim: To describe the use of bioceramics in the non-surgical treatment of perforating internal root resorption.
Summary: Confusion over the subject of root resorption seems ubiquitous in the general dental community. Because of the several subheadings such as internal, external cervical, and apical, and because of a variety of causes for each, such as trauma, pressure, infection, inflammation, and systemic, the confusion can be understandable. It seems that this confusion arises primarily from the nomenclature describing the location and etiology of root resorption. This case report deals with perforating internal root resorption (IRR), its causes, diagnosis, and successful nonsurgical treatment, …
Conventionalization Of Alternative Agriculture And The Intervention Of External Investors: Case Sharing Community-Supported Agriculture Farm, China, Meiling Wu
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The trend of alternative farmers adopting conventional farming methods, known as conventionalization, has become increasingly prevalent. External investment can be a catalyst for the conventionalization of alternative agriculture. The study seeks to examine the dynamics through which external investment and investors facilitate the conventionalization of alternative agriculture. A study was conducted on a Sharing Community Supported-Agriculture (CSA) Farm, with data being gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic methods. The findings indicated that (1) the low economic sustainability of Sharing CSA Farm leads to an influx of external investment; (2) external investors compel the farm manager to relax adherence …

Poster: Profiling Event Vision Processing On Edge Devices, Ila Nitin Gokarn, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As RGB camera resolutions and frame-rates improve, their increased energy requirements make it challenging to deploy fast, efficient, and low-power applications on edge devices. Newer classes of sensors, such as the biologically inspired neuromorphic event-based camera, capture only changes in light intensity per-pixel to achieve operational superiority in sensing latency (O(μs)), energy consumption (O(mW)), high dynamic range (140dB), and task accuracy such as in object tracking, over traditional RGB camera streams. However, highly dynamic scenes can yield an event rate of up to 12MEvents/second, the processing of which could overwhelm …
Independent Long Covid Journalism As A Lens For Critical Information Literacy: Conversations With The Sick Times Founders Betsy Ladyzhets And Miles W. Griffis, Andrea Baer
Communications in Information Literacy
Both the COVID-19 pandemic and the acceleration of climate change illuminate how difficult it can be to make sense of information about wicked problems—that is, issues that are highly complex and have no simple or complete solutions (Rittel & Webber, 1973). One approach to grappling with wicked problems is to consider the information practices that different people, communities, or professions use to make sense of those issues. In this Perspectives piece, I explore possible ways to practice and teach about critical information literacy by looking to the views, experiences, and professional practices of two independent journalists who report on …

The occipital nerve block involves the injection of a local anesthetic and possibly a corticosteroid near the occipital nerves at the base of the skull and aims at providing relief from chronic headaches by temporarily numbing or reducing inflammation around the occipital nerves. It has proven to be efficacious in treating chronic headaches, especially those that are refractory to medication; it is both diagnostic and therapeutic with symptom abatement from weeks to months. Occipital nerve blocks can be utilized alone or with standard-of-care therapy for various other headache conditions, such as cluster headaches, episodic headaches or chronic migraines. This review …
Controlled Drug Delivery And Cellular Activities From Electrospun Fibers, Diala Bani Mustafa
Controlled Drug Delivery And Cellular Activities From Electrospun Fibers, Diala Bani Mustafa
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Electrospun drug-eluting fibers have demonstrated potential applications in topical drug delivery, where modulations of drug releases were achieved through polymer fiber compositions. In this study, blend fibers of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) at various compositions were electrospun from 10 wt% of polymer solutions to encapsulate a model drug of ibuprofen (IBP). Results showed that average polymer solution viscosities determined the electrospinning parameters and the resulting average fiber diameters. In vitro release of IBP suggested a transition from a gradual release to a fast release when increasing PEO contents in the PCL/PEO blend fibers up to 120 minutes. In …
A Hard-Boiled Hero In An Atomized World: Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’S El Hombre De Mi Vida And Milenio Carvalho Lament Neoliberal Alienation, José Ortigas
Modern Languages & Literature
Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s Pepe Carvalho detective novels comprise a seminal series, spanning eighteen novels from 1972 to 2004, that consolidated the novela negra as a popular, denunciatory genre in Spain. While much has been written about the early entries in the series, the latter novels, namely El hombre de mi vida (2000), Milenio I: Rumbo a Kabul, and Milenio II: En las antípodas (2004), have not received similar attention. Critics like Colmeiro, Balibrea, and Nichols have accurately read these novels as a denunciation of the most evident negative consequences of globalization at the turn of the new millennium, principally gentrification, …
Predicting Rheology Of Uv-Curable Nanoparticle Ink Components And Compositions For Inkjet Additive Manufacturing, Cameron D. Lutz
Predicting Rheology Of Uv-Curable Nanoparticle Ink Components And Compositions For Inkjet Additive Manufacturing, Cameron D. Lutz
Master's Theses
Inkjet additive manufacturing is the next step toward ubiquitous manufacturing by enabling multi-material printing that can exhibit various mechanical, electronic, and thermal properties. These characteristics are realized in the careful formulation of the inks and their functional materials, but there are many constraints that need to be satisfied to allow optimal jetting performance and build quality when used in an inkjet 3-D printer. Previous research has addressed the desirable rheology characteristics to enable stable drop formation and how the metallic nanoparticles affect the viscosity of inks. The contending goals of increasing nanoparticle-loading to improve material deposition rates while trying to …

Catalytic Role Of Histidine-114 In The Hydrolytic Dehalogenation Of Chlorothalonil By Pseudomonas Sp. Ctn-3, Grayson Gerlich, Callie Miller, Xinhang Yang, Brian Bennett, Judith Klein-Seetharaman, Richard C. Holz
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
Chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile; TPN) is an environmentally persistent fungicide that sees heavy use in the USA and is highly toxic to aquatic species and birds, as well as a probable human carcinogen. The chlorothalonil dehalogenase from Pseudomonas sp. CTN-3 (Chd, UniProtKB C9EBR5) degrades TPN to its less toxic 4-OH-TPN analog making it an exciting candidate for the development of a bioremediation process for TPN; however, little is currently known about its catalytic mechanism. Therefore, an active site residue histidine-114 (His114) which forms a hydrogen bond with the Zn(II)-bound water/hydroxide and has been suggested to be the active site acid/base, was substituted …

Prevalence And Descriptive Epidemiology Of Choanal Atresia And Stenosis In Texas, 1999–2018, Renata H Benjamin, Lisa K Marengo, Angela E Scheuerle, A J Agopian, Laura E Mitchell
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Choanal atresia and stenosis are common causes of congenital nasal obstruction, but their epidemiology is poorly understood. Compared to bilateral choanal atresia/stenosis, unilateral choanal atresia/stenosis is generally diagnosed later and might be under-ascertained in birth defect registries. Data from the population-based Texas Birth Defects Registry and Texas vital records, 1999-2018, were used to assess the prevalence of choanal atresia/stenosis. Poisson regression models were used to evaluate associations with infant and maternal characteristics in two analytic groups: isolated choanal atresia/stenosis (n = 286) and isolated, bilateral choanal atresia/stenosis (n = 105). The overall prevalence of choanal atresia/stenosis was 0.92/10,000, and the …
The Role Of Micrornas On Systemic And Central Nervous System- Inflammation In Aged Mice, Anik Banerjee
The Role Of Micrornas On Systemic And Central Nervous System- Inflammation In Aged Mice, Anik Banerjee
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
MicroRNAs play a crucial role in multiple biological processes, including development, cell differentiation, proliferation, metabolism, and cell death. Aberrant regulation of microRNAs is seen in many diseases, such as sepsis, cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases such as stroke, and metabolic disorders. Because of their involvement in disease processes, microRNAs have been investigated as both potential biomarkers, and as therapeutic targets. Age-related inflammatory diseases including diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis are important risk factors for infection and sepsis. Intestinal barrier impairment occurs with aging and after brain injuries, including stroke. Both aging and stroke increase the risk of infection and sepsis and are …

Community Discovery Over Attributed Graphs, Yudong Niu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Community discovery, as a fundamental problem in graph mining, finds applications in various domains such as biological analysis, system optimization and fraud detection. Although many efforts have been made to address community discovery based on graph topology, few works have been devoted to community discovery over attributed graphs, where graphs are equipped with attribute information such as node and edge types. Thus, this thesis is devoted to designing innovative solutions that can utilize the attribute information together with graph topology for community discovery. In particular, we study novel problems with efficient algorithms for both homogeneous and heterogeneous attributed graphs and …

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the calorie and selected micronutrient intakes of female collegiate student-athletes across a variety of sports. The participants were instructed to complete 3-day food records which were analyzed and compared to their individual nutrition needs. Results of this study indicated …
Gender Regrets: Banning Abortion And Gender-Affirming Care, Noa Ben-Asher, Margot J. Pollans
Gender Regrets: Banning Abortion And Gender-Affirming Care, Noa Ben-Asher, Margot J. Pollans
Utah Law Review
Conservative politicians, lawmakers, and media have generated a national moral panic about transgender children and youth that has resulted, as of early 2024, in restrictions or bans on GAC for minors in twenty-four states. In these bans and the advocacy around them gender-affirming care for minors is presented as harmful, ideological, unnecessary, and likely to lead to future regret. The role of regret in the movement to ban gender-affirming care parallels the role of regret in the ongoing conservative campaign to ban abortion. In the years between Roe v. Wade (1973) and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), politicians …
Here—There, Glikeriya Shotanova
Here—There, Glikeriya Shotanova
Masters Theses
Here—there explores the nature and ways of gathering, proposing an alternative path to organizing a cultural center. Divided into three acts (Act One: There, Act Two: Here, and Act Three: Together), it touches on the topics of collective knowledge and the importance of its accessibility to the local communities. How do we organize communities in a way that operates as a body, and how do we use industrial spaces as a bridge between knowledge and those who carry the knowledge? Due to alienation in societies, the decentralization of creative communities, and the inaccessibility of real estate to younger generations, there …
Perform—Produce, Rebecca Wilkinson
Perform—Produce, Rebecca Wilkinson
Masters Theses
Perform — Produce defines graphic design as a discipline rooted in work rather than a process that springs forth spontaneously from the creative imagination.
Perform — Produce is driven by strict constraints and machine-like craft, employing outdated tools and the physical body in processes of making that are stubbornly slow.
Perform — Produce deploys performance as a tactic to expose the otherwise invisible labor of design, and to reveal the ways design acquires value.
Perform — Produce proposes a new organizational model that integrates live happenings, cross-disciplinary exchange, and self-publishing to consider not just the product of design but also …
Supporting Latinx Preservice Teachers For Implementing Phenomenon-Based Science To Promote Their Understanding Of The Three Dimensions Of Science Learning With An Emphasis On The Nature Of Science (Nos), Leslie Y. Garrido
Theses and Dissertations
As the adoption rate of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) continues to rise in the United States, there is an increasing need for the development of high-quality instructional materials that reflect NGSS and effectively prepare teachers for its implementation. The NGSS aim to foster an understanding of three interconnected dimensions in students: science and engineering practices (SEP), crosscutting concepts (CCC), and disciplinary core ideas (DCI), along with an understanding of the nature of science (NOS). These standards envision students continuously revising their knowledge through the investigation of real-world phenomena using these dimensions. The State of Texas recently adopted and …
Storage Solutions Within Memory Capacitor Technologies, Sam Anderson
Storage Solutions Within Memory Capacitor Technologies, Sam Anderson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses
The need for efficient memory solutions is ever-increasing in the contemporary computing technology landscape, particularly in neuromorphic computing. This thesis introduces a novel approach to memory storage using memcapacitors, which store information via capacitance rather than voltage, offering a promising alternative to traditional memory systems. Through the development and simulation of memcapacitor technologies, this work explores their potential to enhance machine learning capabilities and reduce power consumption. Our research demonstrates that memcapacitors can be effectively implemented at the nano-scale, albeit with substantial manufacturing investment. We employed various optimization strategies, including circuit adjustments and behavioral modeling simulations, to maximize the efficiency …
Bounded Extraterritoriality, Ruth Mason, Michael S. Knoll
Bounded Extraterritoriality, Ruth Mason, Michael S. Knoll
Michigan Law Review
Twenty-first-century politics has inspired a new mode of interstate rivalries and reprisals consisting not of the tariffs that plagued the Founding but rather of regulations with significant impacts outside the enacting state’s borders. Employing the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine of extraterritoriality, the Supreme Court has limited overbroad state regulations, but the extraterritoriality doctrine is unclear both in its normative grounding and practical application. This Article proposes a conceptual framework that situates the prohibition of extraterritoriality as an aspect of horizontal federalism. Our conceptualization of extraterritoriality enables us to distinguish it from two dormant Commerce Clause doctrines with which it is …

Udbrnet: A Novel Uncertainty Driven Boundary Refined Network For Organ At Risk Segmentation, Riad Hassan, M. Rubaiyat Hossain Mondal, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Organ segmentation has become a preliminary task for computer-aided intervention, diagnosis, radiation therapy, and critical robotic surgery. Automatic organ segmentation from medical images is a challenging task due to the inconsistent shape and size of different organs. Besides this, low contrast at the edges of organs due to similar types of tissue confuses the network’s ability to segment the contour of organs properly. In this paper, we propose a novel convolution neural network based uncertainty-driven boundary-refined segmentation network (UDBRNet) that segments the organs from CT images. The CT images are segmented first and produce multiple segmentation masks from multi-line segmentation …
Not Sanitized For Your Protection: Aids And The Politics Of Trash, Emma Banks
Not Sanitized For Your Protection: Aids And The Politics Of Trash, Emma Banks
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Metaphors of waste are particularly potent when enlisted to describe and justify the segregation and subjugation of marginalized communities. For, as discard studies scholars have shown, waste is not merely about trash; it is about power (Liboiron and Lepawsky). Maintaining power necessitates hierarchical categorization, whereby the needs and desires of some people are prioritized over those of others, to frequently catastrophic effect.
At the turn of the 21st century, AIDS patients and allies needed no such explanation of what it meant to be relegated to the fringes and designated as waste. Thrown to the proverbial curb of society, PWAs (people …
Beyond The Madwoman In The Attic: Representations Of Female Madness In Victorian Popular Literature, Beth Sherman
Beyond The Madwoman In The Attic: Representations Of Female Madness In Victorian Popular Literature, Beth Sherman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation pushes back against the feminist notion of madness as a social construct applied to women by a patriarchal order as a means of social control. I argue that representations of female insanity in Victorian novels are instead tied to prevailing 19th Century medical theories, revolving around phrenology, physiology, and especially the notion of partial or moral madness. Starting with Charlotte Bronte’s infamous Bertha Mason, I study how the notion of madness has changed and evolved in Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White and Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret. I discuss how non-canonical texts by Collins, …

Worldbuilding: A Theory Of Resilience In Transgender And Gender Expansive Young People, Jennifer Debower
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) young people have long histories of surviving, resisting, and even thriving despite hostility. However, dominant narratives rarely explore their stories of agency and resilience. This research aims to address that gap by asking: Where are the stories of TGE youth's strength, creativity, and resistance? What lessons lie within them? Using a critical, constructivist grounded theory approach, this study examines how 16 TGE young people navigate and challenge transphobia’s precarious conditions. Results suggest that because the current realities do not make space for their existence, TGE young people find strength in creative practices (fashion, hair, body …

Framing The Fight: Revolutionary Feelings In Virtual Communities, James Reilly
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study considers how social media impacts emotional processing, and ultimately social movement development. Through a multidisciplinary lens, I explore how social media fits within larger media ecologies, particularly during times of social upheaval and collective action. Grounded in an examination of organizational efforts in advance of the 2011 Egyptian revolution, I look at how communication patterns create common emotional cues that help form the movement. Considering framing, emotional habitus, and subjective agency within digital spaces, I demonstrate how social media has emerged as an articulating space for social movements to develop and plan before drawing wider, offline populations to …

High Mdmx (Mdm4) In Mutant P53 Expressing Breast Cancer Cells Activates The Cxcl12-Cxcr4 Metastasis Signaling Axis, Rusia H. Lee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The metastasis-promoting G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) CXCR4 is activated by the cytokine CXCL12 (also known as SDF-1) to promote metastasis through CXCR4 upregulation. High CXCR4-expressing cancer cells utilize CXCL12, the exclusive endogenous ligand of CXCR4, to intravasate into the blood as circulating tumor cells (CTCs) which then extravasate to distant metastatic sites. We previously determined the oncogenes, Mouse Double Minute 2 and 4 (MDM2 and MDM4, also known as MDMX), drive TNBC metastasis and positively correlate with high expression of CXCR4. Interestingly, this upregulation of CXCR4 was only observed in primary tumor cells grown in the tumor microenvironment …

Risk-Benefit Trade-Offs And Precision Utilities In Phase I-Ii Clinical Trials, Pavlos Msaouel, Juhee Lee, Peter F Thall
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Identifying optimal doses in early-phase clinical trials is critically important. Therapies administered at doses that are either unsafe or biologically ineffective are unlikely to be successful in subsequent clinical trials or to obtain regulatory approval. Identifying appropriate doses for new agents is a complex process that involves balancing the risks and benefits of outcomes such as biological efficacy, toxicity, and patient quality of life.
Purpose: While conventional phase I trials rely solely on toxicity to determine doses, phase I-II trials explicitly account for both efficacy and toxicity, which enables them to identify doses that provide the most favorable risk-benefit …

Mass spectrometry is a powerful and widely used tool for generating proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics profiles, which is pivotal for elucidating biological processes and identifying biomarkers. However, missing values in mass spectrometry-based omics data may pose a critical challenge for the comprehensive identification of biomarkers and elucidation of the biological processes underlying human complex disorders. To alleviate this issue, various imputation methods for mass spectrometry-based omics data have been developed. However, a comprehensive comparison of these imputation methods is still lacking, and researchers are frequently confronted with a multitude of options without a clear rationale for method selection. To address …
