Prostate cancer has heterogeneous growth patterns, and its prognosis is the poorest when it progresses to a neuroendocrine phenotype. Using bioinformatic analysis, we evaluated RNA expression of neuroendocrine genes in a panel of five different cancer types: prostate adenocarcinoma, breast cancer, kidney chromophobe, kidney renal clear cell carcinoma and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma. Our results show that specific neuroendocrine genes are significantly dysregulated in these tumors, suggesting that they play an active role in cancer progression. Among others, synaptophysin (SYP), a conventional neuroendocrine marker, is upregulated in prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and breast cancer (BRCA). Our analysis shows that SYP …

Exploring Spin Dynamics Using Time-Resolved Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Spectroscopy, Arup Barua Jun 2024

Exploring Spin Dynamics Using Time-Resolved Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Spectroscopy, Arup Barua

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The interaction between light and matter plays a crucial role in numerous systems, including optoelectronicdevices such as Photodiode (PD), Laser diode (LD), LED, solar cells to even biological components like photosystem II, and potential upcoming quantum technologies. Light is absorbed or emitted usually at a scale smaller than a nanometer, with associated processes happening within attosecond to picosecond durations. It is known that in a vacuum, static magnetic fields do not affect light. On the other hand, the magnetic field or magnetization of a material affects the light that passes through or is reflected by the material. The magneto-optic effect …

Group B Streptococcus Intestinal Barrier Disruption And The Protective Role Of Butyrate, Kristen Dominguez Jun 2024

Group B Streptococcus Intestinal Barrier Disruption And The Protective Role Of Butyrate, Kristen Dominguez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae; GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis worldwide. Intrapartum antibiotics in GBS-colonized mothers significantly reduced the incidence of early-onset sepsis occurring in the first week of life; however, there are currently no prophylactic interventions for late-onset sepsis, occurring within the first 3 months of life. GBS is a pathobiont that primarily colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and can cross the intestinal barrier via both the paracellular and transcellular routes, causing invasive disease. Neonatal susceptibility to GBS intestinal translocation is mediated by inadequate epithelial barrier function and microbiome immaturity; however, the mechanisms by which GBS exploits …

Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp Jun 2024

Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Youth and adults with antisocial behavior present a significant mental health concern. Elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits, characterized by deficient empathy and remorse, distinguish clinically important subgroups of antisocial individuals who present with more severe behavior and distinct cognitive-affective characteristics that may help to explain the underlying causes of their antisocial behavior and inform more effective treatments. Specifically, two mechanisms theorized to underlie the development of elevated CU traits by way of atypical empathy development are deficient reactivity to and recognition of others’ emotions. Though a substantive literature base reports associations between CU traits and emotional processing deficits, significant inconsistencies remain. …

A Curious Case Of Ards, Normonique Dyer, Do Jun 2024

A Curious Case Of Ards, Normonique Dyer, Do

The Medicine Forum

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a well-known description of progressive respiratory decline. ARDS can be suspected in patients that meet the following criteria: (1) progressive dyspnea with onset within 1 week of a suspected clinical insult, (2) reduction in arterial oxygen saturation, and (3) bilateral alveolar infiltrates not due to a primary cardiogenic process.1 The management of ARDS is largely unchanged regardless of the etiology and thus will not be within the scope of discussion for this report. However, the etiology of ARDS is of significance given that the cause of a patient’s respiratory failure has prognostic implications. …

The Deviant Geographer, Janice Monk, Casey D. Allen Jun 2024

The Deviant Geographer, Janice Monk, Casey D. Allen

The Geographical Bulletin

I’ve spent my life being a deviant. When I say that, I don’t necessarily mean in a delinquent sense (though that has been necessary at times). Rather, I mean I’ve always had to approach things differently. Things about your own life and background can help to shape and widen the ways in which we study, and how we see the world – even if you don’t realize it. For me, it was a combination of breaking my work-a-day upbringing cycle (I came from a working-class family and lived/grew-up in the Petersham suburb, west of downtown Sydney, Australia) and being the …

Viral Worlds: Zika And Matter Of Global Health Futures, Deborah Dixon Jun 2024

Viral Worlds: Zika And Matter Of Global Health Futures, Deborah Dixon

The Geographical Bulletin

As a site for ‘cutting edge’ research, virology has a profoundly conservative genealogy, its promulgations on the origins of viral disease intimately wrapped in prognostications on the ending of human life. Since the late 19th century, a concern for the reach of pathogenic viral matter into human bodies has emerged as a deeply colonial project, with fears over the transformation of endemic diseases into epidemic ones conjoined with cautions of population decline in the colonies and disrupted trade routes. Colonial authorities in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America framed viral disease as a ‘public health’ problem – a problem …

The Journey, Dawn J. Wright Jun 2024

The Journey, Dawn J. Wright

The Geographical Bulletin

While I’m an oceanographer first and foremost, I do have formal training in (physical) geography and terrestrial geology. And this background has allowed me to achieve some pretty neat things, especially so considering I’m a Black American female scientist. I’m pretty modest when it comes to tooting my own horn, but when hard work pays off, being acknowledged can be refreshing. I’ve been to bottom of the ocean. I’ve mapped the ocean floor. Well, a lot of it – but in 3D – and we’ll hopefully have the entire seafloor mapped by 2030. But accomplishments aside, I’d like to give …

Modeling The Risk And Potential Spread Of The Asian Long-Horned Beetle In Southeast Michigan, Stephanie Carr, Rudy Bartels, Lisa Dechano-Cook, Diana Casey Jun 2024

Modeling The Risk And Potential Spread Of The Asian Long-Horned Beetle In Southeast Michigan, Stephanie Carr, Rudy Bartels, Lisa Dechano-Cook, Diana Casey

The Geographical Bulletin

The Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) infestation has been an ongoing problem for the Midwest, Northeast, and parts of the South contiguous United States. The purpose of this project is to identify the currently infested areas and to create a potential spread map for counties in Michigan nearest to the Ohio infestation. There is a strong probability that infestations will spread into Michigan. The climate is ideal for the beetle and Michigan’s native tree species, the sugar maple, is its preferred host. Michigan’s most susceptible counties are Monroe, Washtenaw, and Wayne. The potential destruction of Michigan’s maple trees could significantly …

Choosing Your Perspective: Finding Adventure In The Middle Of A Crisis, Casey D. Allen, Kaelin M. Groom Jun 2024

Choosing Your Perspective: Finding Adventure In The Middle Of A Crisis, Casey D. Allen, Kaelin M. Groom

The Geographical Bulletin

We arrived in Jordan late August 2019 for Kaelin’s, postdoctoral Fulbright research fellowship: an historical repeat assessment of Petra over the last century. This was not our f irst experience living abroad, having been stationed in Amman (Jordan) a few years previous for my own Fulbright, and subsequently being based in Barbados. In fact, after our first time living in Jordan, we ended up returning on multiple occasions to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team conducting research in Wadi Rum. Jordan is an amazing country with the most hospitable and genuine people we have ever encountered in our somewhat extensive travels, …

Rice Growing Environment Of The Ibagué Belt, Colombia: An Ecological Study At The Geotope Scale, Alexander Martínez Rivillas, William Barragán Zaque Jun 2024

Rice Growing Environment Of The Ibagué Belt, Colombia: An Ecological Study At The Geotope Scale, Alexander Martínez Rivillas, William Barragán Zaque

The Geographical Bulletin

Based on the biophysical and socioecological primary information collected and analyzed by the authors in two geotopes of the rice growing area of the Ibague region (Colombia, south America), an ecological study of the rice landscape is offered by means of using the GTP method (Geosystem, Territory, and Landscape) of Bertrand. We aspire to obtain an integrated vision of this environment on the scale of geotopos. It is shown that these spatial units can support a study of an “environmental landscape” inspired by Bertrand’s epistemology. T he research applies the principles of the GTP, traditionally conceived for the study of …

Treating Invasive Tamarisk As An Intern At San Andres National Wildlife Refuge, Aaron Adams Jun 2024

Treating Invasive Tamarisk As An Intern At San Andres National Wildlife Refuge, Aaron Adams

The Geographical Bulletin

Tamarisk (also known as salt cedar) is mentioned once in the Quran, “There was for [the tribe of] Saba’ in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], “Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord. “But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees. (Surah 34, Āyah 15,16)” (The …

Becoming An Ally And Understanding The Geographies Of Gender Identity: Lessons From Fieldwork, Shamayeta Bhattacharya

The Geographical Bulletin

My “field”, Kolkata, India inspired my “work”, i.e., my research work. Before coming to the United States in 2017 for graduate school, I was associated with several queer organizations in Kolkata (also my hometown) and developed friendships and association which was the major motivation for my dissertation “SHAKTHI: Studying Healthcare Accessibility among Kothi, Transgender, and Hijra Individuals.” The word, SHAKTHI, in Sanskrit means “power” or “empowerment”. My dissertation is by and for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, with a goal to empower them. It is theoretically grounded in transgender geography, health geography, and geospatial analysis. During my dissertation coursework, …

Foundational Moments In Geographers’ Lives: Tales From The Field, Casey D. Allen Jun 2024

Foundational Moments In Geographers’ Lives: Tales From The Field, Casey D. Allen

The Geographical Bulletin

Talking with colleagues and students, one of two responses (sometimes both) usually crop-up when answering the question, “Why did you choose geography”? One is the discipline’s broadness: geography encompasses both social and natural sciences as well as the humanities.
