The performance teachers in the preliminary study still use teacher-centred methods, both teachers who have received certification and those who have not. On the other hand, the evaluation in schools is still on teacher performance related to learning design and the learning process in the class. Therefore, social, personality and professional competencies are still less reviewed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate teachers' performance based on their gender and work experience in public senior high schools in Maluku Barat Daya (MBD) district. Four main components were used to assess teacher performance: lesson planning and preparation, class management, lesson …

Climate, Food, And Humans Predict Communities Of Mammals In The United States, Roland Kays, Matthew H. Snider, Andrew M. Wilson
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
The assembly of species into communities and ecoregions is the result of interacting factors that affect plant and animal distribution and abundance at biogeographic scales. Here, we empirically derive ecoregions for mammals to test whether human disturbance has become more important than climate and habitat resources in structuring communities.

Integrity, Flexibility, And Balance: How Change Works In Psychotherapy, David Pincus
Integrity, Flexibility, And Balance: How Change Works In Psychotherapy, David Pincus
Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Psychotherapy may be the most tested form of health intervention and also one of the most mysterious. Clinical trials, and meta-analyses of these trials, have repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of psychotherapy, while also failing to uncover any clear-cut and consistent understanding of how psychotherapy works. This lack of understanding has driven the field to develop 500 supposedly distinct, yet equivalently effective “theories.” The field suffers from barriers to scientific discovery, barriers to therapist training, and barriers to people seeking help for their psychosocial problems. This chapter tackles the mystery of how therapy works by examining the shortcomings of modern medical …
Nonlinear Biopsychosocial Resilience: Self-Organization As The Basis For A Common Framework, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus
Nonlinear Biopsychosocial Resilience: Self-Organization As The Basis For A Common Framework, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus
Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Recently, calls have been made for a common framework to understand human resilience through the lens of dynamical systems theory. This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and tools necessary for such an approach. It builds on an existing theoretical framework of biopsychosocial resilience grounded in self-organization theory. This theoretical framework is applied to the formalization of four types of resilience – robustness, resilience, antifragility and grit. Next, important features of stability, structural integrity, and flexibility are discussed as empirically measurable characteristics of a systems-based approach to resilience, which provide a foundation for further applications, including metastability and, …

The dynamics of cyclopentadiene (CP) following optical excitation at 243 nm was investigated by time-resolved pump-probe X-ray scattering using 16.2 keV X-rays at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We present the first ultrafast structural evidence that the reaction leads directly to the formation of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentene (BP), a strained molecule with three- and four-membered rings. The bicyclic compound decays via a thermal backreaction to the vibrationally hot CP with a time constant of 21 ± 3 ps. A minor channel leads to ring-opened structures on a subpicosecond time scale.

Dietary Saturated Fatty Acids Modulate Host Innate Immunity, Amy Lorraine Seufert
Dissertations and Theses
Nutrition, cellular metabolism, and inflammatory regulation of the immune system are interconnected, and advancing our understanding of this will greatly improve treatment of metabolic and inflammatory disease. Specifically, dietary saturated fats are becoming increasingly appreciated for their ability to modify innate immune cell function in mammals following absorption into the blood and lymphatic circulation systems. The work herein focuses on the capacity for lipids in the diet to modulate innate immune memory. My thesis first broadly outlines fundamental background, including: the evolution of human nutrition, the discovery of innate immune memory, and key topics that reoccur throughout the text surrounding …

Electrochemical Detection Of Glucose Using A Prussian Blue Modified Electrodes Combined With Glucose Encapsulated Within A Xerogel, Daniel Baker, Sarah Davis, Drew Budner
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Recent literature reports examples of electrochemical biosensor systems that have been developed based upon on the encapsulation of enzymes and metal nanoparticles into a xerogel. These systems have been utilized for the detection of biologically important compounds, such as glucose. These reports on these systems have found acceptable detection limits and linear ranges. At the same time, Prussian blue modified electrodes have been shown to have better operating parameters than metal electrodes for the detection of hydrogen peroxide. In this work, a biosensor system is described that incorporates the encapsulation of glucose oxidize within a xerogel combined with electrochemical detection …

Learning The Landscape: An Active And Applied Lesson On Landscape Ecology For General Ecology Courses, Erin G. Rowland-Schaefer, Brianna Negrete Mcginley, Heather E. Bergan-Roller
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Landscape ecology is an important subtopic of ecology. As a field, it is inherently interdisciplinary and provides opportunities to teach not only content, but transferable ecological and geographical skills. Given the broad spectrum of topics in general ecology courses, landscape ecology is often relegated to a single lecture or not covered at all, meaning that there is a need for concise, effective lesson content for teachers. Here, we present an adaptable, active lesson on landscape ecology that can be implemented to help address this gap and support student engagement and the application of content knowledge to local systems. Students are …
Changes In Lean Body Mass With Glucagon-Like Peptide-1-Based Therapies And Mitigation Strategies, Ian J. Neeland
Changes In Lean Body Mass With Glucagon-Like Peptide-1-Based Therapies And Mitigation Strategies, Ian J. Neeland
Faculty Scholarship
Weight loss induced by glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R)/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor agonists is coming closer to the magnitudes achieved with surgery. However, with greater weight loss there is concern about potential side effects on muscle quantity (mass), health and function. There is heterogeneity in the reported effects of GLP-1-based therapies on lean mass changes in clinical trials: in some studies, reductions in lean mass range between 40% and 60% as a proportion of total weight lost, while other studies show lean mass reductions of approximately 15% or less of total weight lost. There …

Group-III nitrides have transformed solid-state lighting and are strategically positioned to revolutionize high-power and high-frequency electronics. To drive this development forward, a deep understanding of fundamental material properties, such as charge carrier behavior, is essential and can also unveil new and unforeseen applications. This underscores the necessity for novel characterization tools to study group-III nitride materials and devices. The optical Hall effect (OHE) emerges as a contactless method for exploring the transport and electronic properties of semiconductor materials, simultaneously offering insights into their dielectric function. This nondestructive technique employs spectroscopic ellipsometry at long wavelengths in the presence of a magnetic …
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Since the Supreme Court declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 unconstitutional in 2018, 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized face to face and/or on-line betting on sports. A potential unintended consequence of legalized sports betting is an increased risk for mental health disorders and problem gambling. Using a staggered difference-in differences framework, we exploit variation in timing of adoption of legal sports betting across states to evaluate the impact of these laws on mental health outcomes. We combine data on when states passed laws to legalize gambling with data from the Behavioral Risk Factor …

Examining The Effectiveness Of A Collaborative Laboratory Activity On College Students’ Sense Of Community, Erika L. Doctor, Cassandra S. Korte, Patrick J. Cooper
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Research suggests that college students who feel a sense of community with their peers are more likely to earn higher grades and report positive perceptions of their overall academic experience. The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting institutional changes to class schedules have decreased opportunities for students to build a sense of community within their major. To compensate for this division and build a more robust scientific community, we developed a laboratory activity connecting first-year introductory biology students with second-year organic chemistry students. The laboratory activity teaches students how to use indicators as a signifier of enzyme activity on a colorimetric assay. …

Background
4-[18F]fluorobenzyl-triphenylphosphonium ([18F]FBnTP) is a lipophilic cation PET tracer. The cellular uptake of [18F]FBnTP is correlated with oxidative phosphorylation by mitochondria, which has been associated with multiple critical diseases. To date, [18F]FBnTP has been successfully applied for imaging myocardial perfusion, assessment of severity of coronary artery stenosis, delineation of the ischemic area after transient coronary occlusion, and detection/quantification of apoptosis in various animal models. Recent preclinical and clinical studies have also expanded the possibilities of using [18F]FBnTP in oncological diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. However, [18F]FBnTP is typically prepared through a tediously lengthy four-step, three-pot reaction and required multiple synthesizer modules; …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Bladder cancer is an age-related disease, with over three-quarters of cases occurring in individuals aged 65 years and older. Accelerated biological aging has been linked to elevated cancer risks. Epigenetic clocks serve as excellent predictors of biological age, yet it remains unclear whether they are associated with bladder cancer risk. In this large case-control study, we assessed the associations between four well-established epigenetic clocks-HannumAge, HorvathAge, GrimAge, and PhenoAge-and bladder cancer risk. Utilizing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were identified in a genome-wide association study (GWAS), linked to these clocks as instruments, we constructed a weighted genetic risk score (GRS) for …

Since the FDA approval of IL-2 in cancer treatment in the 1980s, immunotherapy has emerged as the standard of care for several tumor types (e.g., melanoma, lung, bladder, colorectal). However, approximately 70 percent of cancer patients, independent of prior treatment or staging, administered immunotherapy will not achieve complete responses and will exhibit disease progression. Several factors have been identified to contribute to treatment failure, including the accumulation of intratumoral immunosuppressive cell populations, insufficient tumor-infiltrating anti-tumor immune populations, or the occurrence of immunoediting on tumor cells. Current strategies to circumvent immunosuppression either lack durable response to new immunosuppressive mechanisms the tumor …
The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Dna Methylation Patterns And Sex-Specific Cortisol Stress Reactivity: A Secondary Analysis, Isabella F. Correia
The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Dna Methylation Patterns And Sex-Specific Cortisol Stress Reactivity: A Secondary Analysis, Isabella F. Correia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Childhood trauma has been shown to significantly impact physical and mental health outcomes, leading to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, and difficulties in decision-making and maintaining relationships. Exposure to such trauma has the potential to dysregulate an individual’s stress response system, resulting in abnormal cortisol levels. Many studies suggest a lasting impact of early-life stress on DNA methylation patterns and, separately, cortisol stress reactivity. In addition, there are known sex differences in exposure to childhood trauma and cortisol reactivity; yet studies to date have not investigated whether there is an association to DNA methylation. This study utilized a …

Roles Of Mitochondrial Chchd2 And Gpcr-Associated Β-Arrestin2 In The Pathogenesis Of Lewy Body Disorders, Teresa R. Kee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helix domain containing 2 (CHCHD2) is a mitochondrial protein that plays important roles in cristae structure, oxidative phosphorylation, and apoptosis. Multiple mutations in CHCHD2 have been associated with Lewy body disorders (LBDs), such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), with the CHCHD2T61I mutation being the most widely studied. We generated the first transgenic mouse models expressing human CHCHD2WT and the PD-linked CHCHD2T61I mutation driven by the mPrP promoter. CHCHD2T61I Tg, but not CHCHD2WT Tg mice exhibit perinuclear mitochondrial aggregates, neuroinflammation, and have impaired long-term synaptic plasticity associated with synaptic dysfunction. Dopaminergic neurodegeneration, a hallmark of PD, …

Resolving Antarctic Margin Paleoceanography For Two Different Timescales And Archives, Theresa M. King
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent decades have seen increased rates of ice mass loss from Antarctic ice sheets, through thinning of many ice shelves around the periphery of the continent. The most vulnerable are the glacial systems that are marine-terminating and grounded below sea level, a characteristic that exposes these systems to sea level rise and warming oceans. Enhanced basal melting under the influence of warm ocean water masses can lead to thinning and retreat of glaciers, and ultimately to the acceleration of grounded ice loss. To contextualize current ice mass loss and contribute to accurate model projections for future retreat scenarios, it is …

Broadened Positive And Emotion Congruent Attentional Biases And Emotion Regulation, Michael Mctighe
Theses
Attentional processes or concentration of mental faculties is a vast area of research in the cognitive sciences that is complicated by an abundance of other variables. Evidence overwhelming suggests that exogenous attention is biased toward emotional stimuli. Prevailing theories suggest that positive emotions can improve attentional processes, and that a participant’s emotional state can lead people to better attend to congruent information. Systems associated with emotion regulation overlap with processes related to biased attention. This study sought to further explore the theories of broaden and build, and emotion congruence, while also exploring how emotion regulation influences various types of attentional …
