Dobbs And Sterilization Decision-Making: Understanding The Coercive Spillover Effects In Reproductive Choice, Thomas Williams
Dobbs And Sterilization Decision-Making: Understanding The Coercive Spillover Effects In Reproductive Choice, Thomas Williams
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The Supreme Court majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization argued their decision would have limited impact beyond abortion rights. This Article examines how Dobbs and subsequent state abortion restrictions are likely to increase women’s reliance on permanent sterilization procedures, particularly among already marginalized populations. Drawing on emerging data and historical context, I argue that some post-Dobbs sterilizations should be understood as effectively coerced by state policies, implicating reproductive justice concerns and potentially undermining fundamental rights established in Skinner v. Oklahoma. Then, I demonstrate how interdisciplinary bioethics frameworks and methodologies can help courts better understand the full implications of …
Religious And Spiritual Communities Must Adapt Or Die: Surviving And Thriving During Challenging Contemporary Times, Thomas G. Plante
Religious And Spiritual Communities Must Adapt Or Die: Surviving And Thriving During Challenging Contemporary Times, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Current trends within both religious and secular communities suggest that contemporary times mean that people spend more time alone than with others. Community engagement in general has been declining, while religious and spiritual community engagement in particular has dropped off significantly in recent decades, and most especially following the COVID-19 global pandemic. Although humans are social beings and benefit from community engagement, we tend to avoid or minimize our affiliations and associations, including our religious and spiritual ones today. Religious and spiritual communities must adapt to changing times or risk becoming irrelevant, diminishing further, and losing their sustainability to continue …

Beta Lactams Anticancer Effect On Human Breast Cancer, Mcf-7 Cell Line, Ailis A. Abalos
Beta Lactams Anticancer Effect On Human Breast Cancer, Mcf-7 Cell Line, Ailis A. Abalos
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is a disease where abnormal cells replicate uncontrollably in that same region and/or other parts of the body. One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer, thus making it the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Chemotherapy, is the utilization of medicinal compounds (drugs) to treat cancer. While most are nonspecific and target both cancer and healthy cells, more emphasis is on developing drugs with specificity (only target tumor cells) and low toxicity. Interestingly, Beta Lactams (β-lactams) have emerged as a class of compounds that are effective in the treatment of various cancers. The benefits …
Development And Characterization Of Β-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes With Enzalutamide For Easing Administration And Efficacy Of The Drug In Crpc, Meghana Kolli
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer (PC) is prevalent among men in the US, often leading to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) with therapy. This is marked by androgen receptor (AR) overexpression, resistance, mutations, and splice variants. Enzalutamide (ENZ), a nonsteroidal antiandrogen, surpasses first-gen AR inhibitors like Bicalutamide. It's the go-to drug for CRPC. We explore ENZ for self-assembly complex formation, crucial for CRPC treatment. Using the solvent evaporation method, we developed β-cyclodextrin and ENZ self-assembly complexes (β-CD-ENZ). β-CD acts as both agent and solubilizer, FDA-approved and safe. Efficacy was tested on PC cell lines (C4-2B) and (22Rv1), including 3D cultures for cytotoxicity and a …

Modulating Covalency In A Ni-H-Al Subunit: Synthesis And Characterization Of A Series Of Electronically Differentiating Ni-Al Heterometallics, Aleida Guadalupe Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
Metal hydrides are moieties that are present in a variety of applications as intermediates in catalysis. Despite the vast utilization of metal hydrides, monometallic metal hydride complexes bear limitations in inert-bond activation and functionalization. A strategy to overcome these limitations and access more challenging reactivity is utilizing metal-metal cooperativity on a single platform to further activate hydride moieties. Although incorporating multiple metal centers on a single ligand scaffold has been realized, access to heterometallic hydride-bearing complexes is a greater synthetic challenge. Given the limitations in accessing such systems, the reactivity and electronic structure of heterometallic hydrides are seldom studied. Recently, …

Theses and Dissertations
Microwave spectroscopy is a technique used to study the molecular structures of a wide range of systems. The first part of the thesis focuses on fluorinated benzoic acids and complexes they form through hydrogen bonding to explore the fluorination effect, while the last part shifts to ethanesulfonic acid and its interaction with water. The study of 3,4,5-triflurorbenzoic acid with formic acid offers insight on the proton tunneling process, which is a process that occurs in many chemical and biological processes. Microwave spectroscopy can help provide dynamic information for the better understanding of this fundamental process. Solvation is another topic that …

Four themes that emerged across both cases included: 1) connecting health, nutrition, everyday science, and culturally sustaining pedagogy through the CBSS curriculum, 2) connecting science to health and wellness concepts through the CBSS …
The Effect Of Advertising On Consumer Self-Improvement Motivation: When And How Advertising Motivates Consumers, Suwakitti Amornpan
The Effect Of Advertising On Consumer Self-Improvement Motivation: When And How Advertising Motivates Consumers, Suwakitti Amornpan
Theses and Dissertations
In today's modern world, advertising permeates nearly every facet of consumers’ daily lives, from billboards over city streets to posts seamlessly integrated into social media feeds. The current research identifies a positive unintended consequence of advertising on consumer behavior: increased consumer self-improvement motivation. Across four studies, I find that exposure to mass (vs. luxury) advertising increases consumer motivation to engage in self-improvement. Specifically, I argue that because advertisements for mass (vs. luxury) products prime attainable (vs. unattainable) consumption goals, they increase consumer confidence in their ability to achieve their consumption goals (i.e., they enhance self-efficacy perceptions). This, in turn, puts …

In the field of molecular simulations, molecular docking is a method that can determine the optimal and preferred orientation of a certain molecule related to another when they are coupled to create a stable complex. The strength of the association, or binding affinity, between two molecules can be predicted using knowledge of their preferred orientation. In this study, a series of prepared compounds were evaluated for their binding modes, potential interactions, and target binding locations. Some derivatives 1,3-oxazepane, and 1,3-benzoxazepine were prepared from three Schiff bases compounds (1S-3S). The compounds (1S-3S) were reacted with succinic anhydride and phthalic anhydride to …

Synthesis And Biological Studies Of 4‐Methyl-7‐Ethylcoumarin Derivatives Containing Azo Group, Muntather Hossam Kazem, Luma S. Ahamed
Baghdad Science Journal
New 4-methyl-7-ethylcoumarin derivatives bearing the azo group were synthesized through series of sequential reactions and tested for their biological activity. Starting from 4-methyl-7-ethylcoumarin prepared from a reaction of m-ethyl phenol and ethyl acetoacetate by pechmann condensation reaction, nitration of 4 -methyl-7-ethyl coumarin using nitric acid was carried out in the presence of sulfuric acid to produce one isomer from 4-methyl-7-ethyl-8-nitrocoumarin under the cold condition at (2-5Cº). Then reducing nitro group used iron metal in an acidic medium to form corresponding amino coumarin, which was converted to azo dyes by reacting its diazonium salt with different phenol derivatives. Brome Grass And Its Management In Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Brome grass (Bromus spp.) is one of the most competitive grass weeds in wheat. Over the last 10 years, brome grass has increased in importance to a greater extent than any other weed species in Australia.
Recent changes in crop production systems, increased conservation tillage, a lack of available selective herbicides, and a decline in system diversity have seen an increase in the importance of this weed in Western Australia (WA).
Seed is the main source of brome grass infestation and, as few seeds remain dormant, the most important aspect of management is to reduce its seed bank.

Annual Ryegrass And Its Management In Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) is one of the most serious and costly weeds of annual winter cropping systems in southern Australia. It is highly competitive and can compete with a crop as early as the 2-leaf stage.
Annual ryegrass is a winter to spring growing weed that can emerge from late autumn to early spring. The number of emergence flushes and the density of plants that emerge are related to initial seedbank levels and the frequency and amount of rainfall.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are shed from the plasma membrane, but the regulation and function of these EVs remain unclear. We found that oxidative stress induced by H 2 O 2 in Hela cells stimulated filopodia formation and the secretion of EVs. EVs were small (150 nm) and labeled for CD44, indicating that they were derived from filopodia. Filopodia-derived small EVs (sEVs) were enriched with the sphingolipid ceramide, consistent with increased ceramide in the plasma membrane of filopo- dia. Ceramide was colocalized with neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (nSMase2) and acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), two sphingomyelinases generating ceramide at the plasma membrane. Inhibition of …

SoxB1 transcription factors (Sox2/3) are well known for their role in early neural fate specification in the embryo, but little is known about functional roles for SoxB1 factors in non-neural ectodermal cell types, such as the neural plate border (NPB). Using Xenopus laevis, we set out to determine whether SoxB1 transcription factors have a regulatory function in NPB formation. Here, we show that SoxB1 factors are necessary for NPB formation, and that prolonged SoxB1 factor activity blocks the transition from a NPB to a neural crest state. Using ChIP-seq, we demonstrate that Sox3 is enriched upstream of NPB genes in …

Macrophages are essential regulators of inflammation and bone loss. Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κβ ligand (RANKL), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is responsible for macrophage differentiation to osteoclasts and bone loss. We recently showed that 14-3-3ζ-knockout (YwhazKO) rats exhibit increased bone loss in the inflammatory arthritis model. 14-3-3ζ is a cytosolic adaptor protein that actively participates in many signaling transductions. However, the role of 14-3-3ζ in RANKL signaling or bone remodeling is unknown. We investigated how 14-3-3ζ affects osteoclast activity by evaluating its role in RANKL signaling. We utilized 14-3-3ζ-deficient primary bone marrow–derived macrophages obtained from wildtype and YwhazKO …

The development of cancer involves the accumulation of somatic mutations in several essential biological pathways. Delineating the temporal order of pathway mutations during tumori- genesis is crucial for comprehending the biological mechanisms underlying cancer development and identifying potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Several computational and statistical methods have been introduced for estimating the order of somatic mutations based on mutation profile data from a cohort of patients. However, one major issue of current methods is that they do not take into account intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH), which limits their ability to accurately discern the order of pathway mutations. To address this …

Werner syndrome (WS) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by loss of function of WRN. WS is a segmental progeroid disease and shows early onset or increased frequency of many characteristics of normal aging. WRN possesses helicase, annealing, strand exchange, and exonuclease activities and acts on a variety of DNA substrates, even complex replication and re- combination intermediates. Here, we review the genetics, biochemistry, and probably physiological functions of the WRN protein. Although its precise role is unclear, evidence suggests WRN plays a role in pathways that respond to replication stress and maintain genome stability particularly in telomeric regions.

Examining Risk Factors For Early-Onset Breast Cancer, Jennifer Grace Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: There have been great advancements in screening and in the identifying of risk factors associated with breast cancer, however, there is a lack of information of these factors in women with breast cancer occurring under the age of 45, known as early-onset breast cancer (EOBC). EOBC is often found at later stages, negatively impacting young women’s careers, family planning, and mental health. Additionally, because of the health disparities that exist within the U.S. health care system, women belonging to racial and ethnic groups, specifically young Black women, tend to have poorer outcomes and higher mortality rates of EOBC …
