Groundwater Recharge Estimation Focusing On Shallow Aquifer Dynamics In The Near Stream Zone Of The Incised Cub Creek, Middleton, Tennessee, Khayrun Nahar Mitu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study investigated the Lone Oaks restoration site in Middleton, Tennessee, focusing on Cub Creek's channeling issues. Subsurface investigations revealed a shallow aquifer with limited groundwater storage, varying in thickness by about 2 m between upstream (U/S) and downstream (D/S) sections, and an unsaturated zone extending from 1.8 m U/S to 2.3 m D/S. The underlying confining layer is 6.5 m bgs U/S and 9 m bgs D/S, indicating eastward erosion or deposition shift between the Wilcox and Porters Creek Clay. Where U/S and D/S soil moisture at 90 cm and 150 cm remained near saturation during the cool season, …

Exempting The Fmla From Forced Arbitration: The Need For Special Consideration Of Pregnant And Working Mothers To Achieve Gender Equality In The Workplace, Taylor Trefger
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Pregnant and working mothers face a multitude of challenges when making decisions that pertain to their health, children, and their livelihoods. Historically, women have encountered numerous barriers regarding their entrance and treatment in the United States labor force as a result of gender discrimination that promotes the idea that women, in their inherent ability to become mothers, renders them inadequate or inferior workers in comparison to men. Unfortunately, such archaic notions of gender roles persist still; today, the reality is that women are more likely to be employed part-time, occupy lower-paid roles, and are less likely to take on managerial …

Successful Feedback Literacy For Library And Information Science Professionals: A Literature Review, Jessica N. Szempruch, Leetta M. Schmidt
USF Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Providing and receiving feedback are crucial elements of any learning exchange and are an intrinsic part of cultivating disciplinary dialogic culture. While there is considerable scholarly conversation on the topic of cultivating constructive feedback in student work, there is less literature dedicated to addressing what successful feedback literacy and processes look like in relation to scholarly research writing by professionals. This literature review examines the development of feedback literacy concepts across disciplines to determine if and how these concepts manifest within academic librarianship literature. The goal of this paper is to gain insights to improve future feedback exchange within the …

Variation And Adaptation In Guppies And Gambusia, Alan L. Gillen, Anna Collins
Variation And Adaptation In Guppies And Gambusia, Alan L. Gillen, Anna Collins
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The guppy fish is considered by many to be a symbol of fertility, renewal, and growth. Gambusia are likely relatives of guppies and are known as mosquito fish because they largely prey on mosquito larvae. For a century, they have been used locally and globally in mosquito control. Guppies, Endler’s livebearers, and Gambusia are in the Poeciliidae family and freely interbreed in the wild. They are assumed to be in the same baramin or created kind. Their purpose in creation is often associated with harmony, balance, and abundance. It appears that the Poeciliidae family was designed with an array of …

Profiling bovine blastocyst transcriptome at the single-cell level has enabled us to reveal the first cell lineage segregation, during which the inner cell mass (ICM), trophectoderm (TE), and an undefined population of transitional cells were identified. By comparing the transcriptome of blastocysts derived in vivo (IVV), in vitro from a conventional culture medium (IVC), and in vitro from an optimized reduced nutrient culture medium (IVR), we found a delay of the cell fate commitment to ICM in the IVC and IVR embryos. Developmental potential differences between IVV, IVC, and IVR embryos were mainly contributed by ICM and transitional cells. Pathway …

The southeastern United States Coastal Plain ecosystem contains baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) swamps and grass-dominated marshes. These ecosystems also occurred on the exposed continental shelf during lower sea levels but are rarely preserved due to the mechanically erosive nature of transgression and regression. Two presently marine sites on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico's continental shelf contain well-preserved woody terrestrial sediments that were the subject of previous studies. This study continues the investigation using geochemical (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) and palynological characteristics of these formerly terrestrial sediments to determine if swamps and/or marshes existed at the time of deposition. The first site is …

The Effect Of Season On Neuroendocrine Interactions In The Mare, Victoria N. Bailey
The Effect Of Season On Neuroendocrine Interactions In The Mare, Victoria N. Bailey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Reproductive seasonality in the mare involves various neuroendocrine modulations, and a series of experiments were conducted to investigate the anatomical and physiological roles of some of these seasonal modulators. The first experiment incorporated kisspeptin-10 (Kp10) into a treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB) and sulpiride, aiming to induce early cyclicity in seasonally anovulatory mares. Incorporation of Kp10 resulted in more mares ovulating earlier compared to mares receiving EB-sulpiride. Although plasma prolactin increased in both groups, concentrations were notably higher in Kp10-treated mares. Therefore, the subsequent experiment explored the anatomical interaction of kisspeptin and prolactin, aiming to determine whether kisspeptin may regulate …

Pressure And Temperature Conditions Across The Mct And Other High Strain Zones Along The Marsyangdi River; Comparison To Modi Khola River Results, Katherine Dudenhoefer
Nepal: Geoscience in the Himalaya
As a result of the Indo-Asia collision, the Main Central Thrust (MCT) is a ductile shear zone that extends across the Himalayas and marks the fault boundary between the Greater Himalayan Crystallines (GHC) and the Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS). Due to the nature of this thrust fault, the GHCs are being stacked on top of the LHS despite their older age and higher grade of metamorphism. However, previously published works show that the MCT is more active in certain regions of Nepal than others. The GHC in the Modi Khola region to the west is thicker than the Marsyangdi region …

“It’S Not Ok To Not Be Ok”: Suicide, California’S Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, And The Constitution, Christina Strohmann
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Individuals who commit suicide are not incompetent or even making an irrational decision. Yet state laws, such as the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act in California, continue to allow mental health professionals to lock up suicidal patients in psychiatric facilities against the patient’s will. These commitments, however, are not always beneficial, and in many instances are detrimental to both the patient and the mental health professional. Patients can be traumatized from the experience, feel more suicidal from lack of hope and feelings of betrayal. Mental health professionals cannot effectively treat suicidal patients when providers are fearful of liability or when their patients refuse …

Development Of Anti-Fibrotic Agents For Potential Use In Glaucoma Filtration Surgery To Prevent Scar Formation, Nikhala Shree S
Theses and Dissertations
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness with irreversible vision loss. It is marked by the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, which results in optic nerve head damage. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a prime risk factor of glaucoma controlled by various treatment regimens i.e., medication, laser, and/ or surgery. It is reported that longterm exposure to anti-glaucoma medications (AGM) may subtle the surgical success rate leading to postoperative fibrosis. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a growth factor that plays an important role in the development of glaucoma and promotes fibrosis.
This study is aimed at developing peptides to …

Herbicide sprayers are becoming larger and more efficient in applications in crop fields. A precise and efficient herbicide application is advantageous in effective weed control. New precision sprayers were introduced in hopes of reducing the amount of herbicide applied. Greeneye Technology and John Deere have developed precision sprayers for the detection of weeds in crop fields, which come equipped with a dual tank system that allows for two different herbicides to be separated from tank to tip. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the broadleaf and grass weed control efficacy of spot spray (SS) technology when applied in …
Triticale As A Source Of Resistance To Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus And Triticum Mosaic Virus, Marcos Winicius Goncalves De Souza
Triticale As A Source Of Resistance To Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus And Triticum Mosaic Virus, Marcos Winicius Goncalves De Souza
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) present a great threat to wheat production in the Great Plains area of the United States due to the loss of photosynthetic area causing reductions in crop yields. Effective control of these viruses is limited to a few available strategies including controlling volunteer wheat and using currently identified resistant genes to both the vector and viruses. While effective, these genes show temperature sensitivity and yield drag, and evidence that the vectors and viruses can overcome them has been found. Thus, new methods of genetic resistance are urgently needed. Field observations …

Optimization Of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells For The Treatment Of Solid Tumors, Hailey Young, Ms
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
T cells have been called the “warriors of the immune system” and for good reason. T cells have many different functions including stimulating B cells to make antibodies; suppressing the immune response when it is no longer needed; killing of foreign, pathogenic, and cancerous cells and several other functions. Despite these key immune system functions, T cells sometimes are deregulated, and this can lead to an increased risk of cancer. Therefore, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have been designed. CAR T cells are T cells that have been genetically engineered to possess a T cell receptor derived from murine, …

Maggot Therapy And Its Clinical Application In The War Against Microbial Resistance, Nicholas Leidy, Ms
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Antibiotic resistance poses a growing threat across the globe. The United Nations estimates that up to 10 million deaths by 2050 will be due to superbugs and antimicrobial resistance. Finding effective solutions has been obstructed by the expensive and time-intensive research and development process. Maggot therapy, however, has emerged as a promising, cost-effective approach to wound debridement or cleaning. This unconventional method takes advantage of the natural capabilities of maggots to effectively debride chronic, non-healing wounds, even those infected with multidrug-resistant bacteria. Through the utilization of proteolytic and digestive enzymes, maggots are able to break down necrotic tissue and promote …

Background
Organisms frequently experience environmental stresses that occur in predictable patterns and combinations. For wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast growing in natural environments, cells may experience high osmotic stress when they first enter broken fruit, followed by high ethanol levels during fermentation, and then finally high levels of oxidative stress resulting from respiration of ethanol. Yeast have adapted to these patterns by evolving sophisticated “cross protection” mechanisms, where mild ‘primary’ doses of one stress can enhance tolerance to severe doses of a different ‘secondary’ stress. For example, in many yeast strains, mild osmotic or mild ethanol stresses cross protect against severe …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The salamander, Ambystoma annulatum, is considered a “species of special concern” in the state of Arkansas, USA, due to its limited geographic range, specialized habitat requirements and low population size. Although metazoan parasites have been documented in this salamander species, neither its native protists nor microbiome have yet been evaluated. This is likely due to the elusive nature and under-sampling of the animal. Here, we initiate the cataloguing of microbial associates with the identification of a new heterlobosean species, Naegleria lustrarea n. sp. (Excavata, Discoba, Heterolobosea), isolated from feces of an adult A. annulatum.

Reproducibility Debt: Challenges And Future Pathways, Zara Hassan, Christoph Treude, Michael Norrish, Graham Williams, Alex Potanin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Reproducibility of scientic computation is a critical factor in validating its underlying process, but it is often elusive. Complexity and continuous evolution in software systems have introduced new challenges for reproducibility across a myriad of computational sciences, resulting in growing debt. This requires a comprehensive domain-agnostic study to dene and asses Reproducibility Debt (RpD) in scientic software, thus uncovering and classifying all underlying factors attributed towards its emergence and identication i.e., causes and eects. Moreover, an organised map of prevention strategies is imperative to guide researchers for its proactive management. This vision paper highlights the challenges that hinder eective management …

Determining The Influence Of Environmental Factors On Amphibian Road Presence Near The Fort Ord National Monument In Monterey County, California, Joshua Beasley
AES Theses
Amphibian populations are declining globally and habitat fragmentation is a major cause. Roads fragment the landscape around the Fort Ord National Monument, representing a threat to amphibian populations through direct mortality from strikes, noise and light pollution, and runoff of chemicals. We surveyed roads surrounding the Fort Ord National Monument in Monterey County, California to assess the effect of habitat cover, traffic intensity, and wetland proximity on the location and magnitude of amphibian road kill. Our surveys turned up at least seven of nine local amphibian species alive on roads, six of which were also found dead on roads. These …
