Analyzing Fe/Mg-Silicate Chemical Gardens As Analogs To Silicate-Rich Hydrothermal Chimneys On Early Earth And Mars, Nancy Alejandra Carman
Analyzing Fe/Mg-Silicate Chemical Gardens As Analogs To Silicate-Rich Hydrothermal Chimneys On Early Earth And Mars, Nancy Alejandra Carman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Hydrothermal systems have been proposed as environments for prebiotic chemistry on early Earth. Ancient Mars was an ocean world and could also have had hydrothermal vents supporting biological or prebiotic processes. The Strytan Hydrothermal Field (SHF) in Iceland is a basalt-hosted alkaline vent that forms massive hydrothermal Mg-saponite chimneys and is a potential analog to basalt-hosted alkaline vents that may have existed at the Eridania basin on Mars, where saponite deposits are thought to have formed from ancient hydrothermal activity. Chemical garden experiments have previously been used to simulate aspects of hydrothermal chimney growth for other types of vent systems; …
Characterizing Gsk3Β Interaction And Kinetics Via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, W A Bhagya De Silva
Characterizing Gsk3Β Interaction And Kinetics Via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, W A Bhagya De Silva
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase involved in several key signaling pathways, including glycogen metabolism, WNT/β-catenin, and Hedgehog signaling. Hyperactivity of GSK3β has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, type II diabetes, and some cancers. Therefore, GSK3β is of interest as a target for therapeutics. Lithium ion (Li+) is a classical inhibitor of GSK3β. Structurally similar beryllium ion (Be2+) is ~1000-fold more potent. Lithium and beryllium have demonstrated pathway-specific and cell type-specific inhibition of GSK3β, prompting an investigation into the inhibitory mechanisms and thermodynamic characteristics of the metal-enzyme interaction.Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is a label-free …
Relationships Between Psychopathology, Impulsivity, And Disordered Eating, Repairer Etuk
Relationships Between Psychopathology, Impulsivity, And Disordered Eating, Repairer Etuk
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Impulsivity is defined by behaviors that are often performed without foresight or consideration for consequences. For some individuals, impulsive behaviors are excessive or dysfunctional, and can become extremely problematic, ultimately leading to impairments in quality of life and lowered psychological functioning. Impulsivity is a multifaceted factor, comprising several different domains that have been explored in past studies (e.g., trait impulsivity, decision making, response inhibition). However, previous research shows that trait impulsivity in adults is consistently associated with several psychiatric problems including substance abuse, eating disorders, and compulsive sexual behaviors. To date, few studies have investigated impulsivity, compulsive sexual behavior. disordered …
Exploring The Everyday Inner Experience Of Grapheme-Color Synesthetes, Cody Michio Kaneshiro
Exploring The Everyday Inner Experience Of Grapheme-Color Synesthetes, Cody Michio Kaneshiro
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Synesthesia is a rare, multivariant condition where the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive sense induces extraordinary inner experiences. Grapheme-color synesthesia is a kind of synesthesia where the presentation of letters and/or numbers induce automatic, directly apprehended color phenomena within synesthetes (i.e., individuals with synesthesia). Despite synesthesia’s being defined by remarkable color experiences, first-person investigations that directly study synesthetes’ inner experience are rare. We used descriptive experience sampling (DES) to describe the everyday inner experience of six grapheme-color synesthetes, each sampled for from 6 to 14 sampling days. Our idiographic findings showed that the salient features of each individual participant’s …
Effects Of Climate Change On (Semi)-Arid Ecosystems In The Southwestern United States, Charlotte Van Der Nagel
Effects Of Climate Change On (Semi)-Arid Ecosystems In The Southwestern United States, Charlotte Van Der Nagel
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Climate change is considered amongst the most severe threats to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems globally. Ecosystems in the southwestern United States have specifically been impacted by intense drought conditions since 2000. Higher temperatures combined with altered precipitation stresses many ecosystems; however, ecosystem specific responses to such stressors may vary. Here, the effects of climate change on semi-arid ecosystems are analyzed for some of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the southwestern United States: lacustrine, riparian, and dryland ecosystems.
Lakes and reservoirs in arid environments often serve as drinking water sources and recreational areas where high water quality is essential. Climate change …
Distribution Of Great Horned Owls (Bubo Virginianus) Near Breeding Grounds Of The Reintroduced Northern Aplomado Falcon (Falco Femoralis Septentrionalis) At Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge In Coastal South Texas, David Roman Bontrager
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Habitat change is the leading cause of species extinctions and declines worldwide. In addition to species losses, habitat changes can also alter species behavior, diet, and the way they interact with other species. Less than one percent of coastal grasslands and prairies in Texas, U.S.A. remain intact as a result of agriculture, urbanization, and woody plant encroachment. This loss of Texas grasslands has resulted in bottom-up impacts, including the extirpations of multiple species that inhabited these ecosystems, such as the Northern Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis septentrionalis), Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (Tympnuchus cupido attwateri), and Pronghorn (Antilocapra …
Hindcasting Water Availability In Semi-Arid Systems, Nicholas E. Kolarik
Hindcasting Water Availability In Semi-Arid Systems, Nicholas E. Kolarik
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Dryland systems cover one third of the earth’s land surface and are becoming increasingly drier, but existing datasets do not capture all of the types of available water that sustain these systems. In semi-arid environments, small surface water bodies and areas of mesic vegetation (wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones) function as critical water resources. However, the most commonly-used maps of water availability are derived from the Landsat time series or single date aerial photographs, and are either too coarse spatially or temporally to effectively monitor dynamics of available water. In Chapter 1, I produced a Sentinel Fusion (SF) water resources …
Development Of Recyclable Materials For Industry Using Non-Petroleum Feedstocks, Terra M. Miller-Cassman
Development Of Recyclable Materials For Industry Using Non-Petroleum Feedstocks, Terra M. Miller-Cassman
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Plastics have been an essential material for over 80 years, yet we have been unable to manage the accumulation of plastic waste. The available solutions for recycling or replacing plastics are complex and costly, and thus have not kept pace with the increasing quantity of plastic waste. This dissertation describes a comprehensive, materials design approach to solving the current and future challenges of plastic waste. Recycled and recyclable materials are developed using commercial feedstocks to reduce barriers for industry adoption. In one approach, unsorted municipal solid waste is compressed at a low temperature and pressure to form rigid composite boards …
Contributing Factors That Affect The Perception Of Canis Lupus, The Grey Wolf, In Idaho, Karl Michael Prokop
Contributing Factors That Affect The Perception Of Canis Lupus, The Grey Wolf, In Idaho, Karl Michael Prokop
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Human-wildlife coexistence has become a hot topic of late, especially in the case of the grey wolf, where there are generally two distinct camps; those that strongly support wolf conservation and those that strongly support wolf eradication. This research explores the factors influencing a person’s perception of the wolf. Some previous research suggests that formal education may be one important factor, where more formal education leads to more positive perceptions of the wolf. Other factors, such as geographic location (e.g., urban versus rural), have also been proposed as important contributors to wolf perception. While studies of these factors have been …
Associations Between Landscape Changes And Declines In Golden Eagle Territory Occupancy In The Morley Nelson Snake River Birds Of Prey National Conservation Area, Ashley Santiago
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Rapid loss of native shrubs and expansion of invasive annuals like cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) have extensively altered shrub-steppe systems. Vegetation changes can have bottom-up effects on trophic interactions and ecosystem dynamics. Predators, like Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) that forage on shrub-reliant prey, may increase their territory size to cope with degraded habitat or abandon historically occupied territories. We used a multi-season occupancy model that accounted for imperfect detection to investigate the associations between landscape cover (i.e., shrub and annual herbaceous), fire history, neighbor density, and territory occupancy of 36 Golden Eagle nesting territories in the Morley …
Effects Of Antifreeze Proteins On Lipid Membrane Stabilization At Cold Temperatures, Emily Vernon
Effects Of Antifreeze Proteins On Lipid Membrane Stabilization At Cold Temperatures, Emily Vernon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Cold-adapted organisms use antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) to enable survival in freezing habitats. AF(G)Ps have been proposed to prevent leakage of intracellular metabolites by stabilizing cellular membranes, a property that could be of great physiological and biomedical relevance. The generality of this effect is not understood, and for the known examples of membrane leakage prevention by AF(G)Ps, the mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of different AFPs on the leakage of ions and dyes from model membrane systems. We find that leakage is best prevented by AFGPs, while insect AFPs showed …
Selective Bacterial Biofilm Removal Using Image-Guided Detection And Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma, Michael Okebiorun
Selective Bacterial Biofilm Removal Using Image-Guided Detection And Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma, Michael Okebiorun
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the use of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) technology in eradicating bacterial biofilms from tissue surfaces, using Ps. fluorescens on chicken tissue to model human chronic wounds. It introduces a novel image-guided technique for precise biofilm removal, employing trypan blue staining coupled with advanced computer vision analysis, enhancing the CAP treatment's precision and efficacy. The study demonstrates the CAP device's ability to effectively disrupt biofilms through a non-thermal mechanism, based on its electrical characteristics and operational parameters. The success of the treatment is evident in the significant reduction of biofilm thickness of 49 -185 µm, with the …
Hard Truths About Soft Ip, Amanda Levendowski
Hard Truths About Soft Ip, Amanda Levendowski
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
People routinely refer to copyright and trademark as “soft IP” to distinguish these practices from another area of intellectual property: patent. But the term reflects implicit biases against copyright and trademark doctrine and practioners. “Soft IP” implies that patent law alone is hard, even though patents are no more physically, metaphorically or intellectually hard than copyrights and trademarks. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, patents are not necessarily more practically hard: while the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office requires technical training for patent prosecutors, which excludes many women and people of color, no such experience is necessary for most patent litigators …
Differences In Bilinguals And Multilinguals Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease, Nathalie Rios Carreon
Differences In Bilinguals And Multilinguals Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease, Nathalie Rios Carreon
University Honors Theses
Alzheimer’s Disease does not have a cure but there are different things that can be done to manage the disease. Keeping your brain healthy is important to keep cognitive reserve (CR) strong and intact. One way to keep CR intact is to speak more than one language. Previous research done shows that monolinguals typically get diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 4 to 5 years earlier than bilinguals and multilinguals. Using existing articles it was found that this new research was similar to research already done. Speaking more than one language keeps the brain healthy in many different ways. Research suggests that …
Wired For Success: A Neurobiological Approach To Improving The Academic Outcomes Of Middle School Boys, Allison Emery
Wired For Success: A Neurobiological Approach To Improving The Academic Outcomes Of Middle School Boys, Allison Emery
University Honors Theses
Male accomplishment in scholastic settings has been declining globally for the last decade, leading to long-term consequences for boys and men. Possible neurobiological underpinnings of the gender gap in education are discussed in this literature review. While male and female differences have, in the past, largely been considered socialized, recent science also confirms neurobiological variances between male and female development. These distinctions are assessed for their potential ties to the decline in male academic success, and are correlated to classroom practices, strategies and interventions meant to increase boys' engagement and performance.

Context-Aware Self-Supervised Learning Of Whole Slide Images, Milam Aryal, Nasim Yahyasoltani
Context-Aware Self-Supervised Learning Of Whole Slide Images, Milam Aryal, Nasim Yahyasoltani
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Presenting whole slide images (WSIs) as graph will enable a more efficient and accurate learning framework for cancer diagnosis. Due to the fact that a single WSI consists of billions of pixels and there is a lack of vast annotated datasets required for computational pathology, the problem of learning from WSIs using typical deep learning approaches such as convolutional neural network (CNN) is challenging. Additionally, WSIs downsampling may lead to the loss of data that is essential for cancer detection. A novel two-stage learning technique is presented in this work. Since context, such as topological features in the tumor surroundings, …
Diatom Abundance In The Polar Oceans Is Predicted By Genome Size, Wade R. Roberts, Adam M. Siepielski, Andrew J. Alverson
Diatom Abundance In The Polar Oceans Is Predicted By Genome Size, Wade R. Roberts, Adam M. Siepielski, Andrew J. Alverson
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
A principal goal in ecology is to identify the determinants of species abundances in nature. Body size has emerged as a fundamental and repeatable predictor of abundance, with smaller organisms occurring in greater numbers than larger ones. A biogeographic component, known as Bergmann’s rule, describes the preponderance, across taxonomic groups, of larger-bodied organisms in colder areas. Although undeniably important, the extent to which body size is the key trait underlying these patterns is unclear. We explored these questions in diatoms, unicellular algae of global importance for their roles in carbon fixation and energy flow through marine food webs. Using a …

Investigation Of Optically Pumped Gesn Quantum Well Lasers, Grey Steven Abernathy
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silicon photonic integrated circuits enable the capability of producing on-chip processing of photonic signals, including both emission and detection. Emission materials, however, have been limited for monolithic integration due to high processing temperatures, indirect bandgap materials, and material integration complications. The (Si)GeSn material system has recently attracted attention due to the bandgap transition from the Si and Ge, naturally indirect bandgap, to direct bandgap with sufficient Sn incorporation. Additionally, the low growth temperature (CMOS compatible; <400 >°C) of (Si)GeSn materials can enable the monolithic integration of the highly desired mid-infrared light emission on the Si Photonic platform. This dissertation first discusses …400>

Tissue Engineered Models Of Environmental And Metabolism-Driven Cancer-Nerve Crosstalk, Emory Gregory
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Within the last 30 years, cancer-nerve interactions have garnered attention for causing patient pain, increasing the risk of recurrence, and decreasing patient prognosis. There are 2 key forms cancer-nerve crosstalk takes: perineural invasion (PNI), in which cancer cells infiltrate nerves as a route for metastasis, and tumor innervation (TI), in which neurites penetrate solid tumors to promote tumor progression. Present in vitro models of cancer-nerve crosstalk primarily include Matrigel® mouse matrix and collagen I hydrogels; whereas collagen I hydrogels neglect tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) complexity, Matrigel® is controversial for its batch-to-batch inconsistencies and inclusion of experiment-altering growth factors. Decellularized …

This paper investigates the economic feasibility of utilizing a solar-powered absorption chiller to provide cooling for poultry houses in northwest Arkansas. An existing thermodynamic model of a poultry house was modified to account for cooling. A simulation was performed using actual weather data from Fayetteville, Arkansas for 26 flocks of broilers at four cooling capacities for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 calendar years. Based on the simulation, the savings from reduced electricity use for ventilation and the cost of the required absorption chiller and solar thermal array for an 8-house farm were calculated. While providing cooling was found to reduce …
Understanding The Emergence Of Self-Determination In Children With Disabilities Through Family Experiences In Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study, Karen K. Lange
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract A person’s ability to be self-determined begins to develop through the earliest interactions in life within the context of the family and caregiving environments. This qualitative phenomenological study of the experiences of eight parents representing seven families of young children explored how families promote their children’s early development of the skills, abilities, and attitudes of self-determination. The critical importance of the family context for the promotion of self-determination in young children is seen in the four themes that emerged from the experiences shared by these families. (1) The family context is transformed by a child with a disability, changing …

The Chronic Growing Problem: Environmental And Social Justice Concerns With Indoor Cannabis Grows, Gina S. Warren
Cardozo Law Review
The rapid legalization of recreational marijuana across states has created environmental and social justice issues, particularly with indoor cultivation. Despite its federal illegality, twenty-four states and various territories have legalized marijuana, igniting a surge in indoor cultivation that bears significant environmental and social consequences. Indoor cultivation facilities require massive energy inputs, resulting in grid strain, pollution, and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the placement of these facilities often occurs in historically marginalized low-income communities, furthering environmental injustice and social harms, as these areas are disproportionately affected by the pollutants emitted from the cultivation processes, such as molds, bacteria, …

The Death Of The Gid Exclusion: Williams V. Kincaid Revitalizes The Ada For Trans Litigants, Alexandra Newman
Cardozo Law Review
Kesha Williams is a transgender woman with gender dysphoria who spent six months incarcerated in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center in Virginia. When Williams first entered the facility, she was assigned to women’s housing and given the uniforms typically provided to female inmates. However, upon learning that Williams had not undergone transfeminine bottom surgery, prison deputies stripped Williams of her female undergarments and transferred her to the men’s side of the facility. There, Williams was harassed by other inmates, misgendered by prison deputies, and delayed in receiving medical treatment for her gender dysphoria. Following her release, Williams asserted several …
Is Grammar Religious Exercise? Addressing Transgender Students And The Limits Of The Complicity Doctrine, Saul R. Thorkelson
Is Grammar Religious Exercise? Addressing Transgender Students And The Limits Of The Complicity Doctrine, Saul R. Thorkelson
Cardozo Law Review
May teachers reject transgender students’ names and pronouns on religious grounds? Across the United States, many schools and universities have adopted policies calling on staff to use all students’ designated first names and gender-congruent pronouns. A number of conservative Christian teachers have claimed that they cannot address transgender students in this way without violating their religious beliefs. In several cases, after unsuccessful attempts by administrators to accommodate these objections, teachers who were subject to employment consequences have brought lawsuits alleging violation of their religious liberty and free speech rights.
This Note employs two recent cases to examine courts’ reasoning on …

Interest in co-teaching in the United States has intensified significantly over the last decade due to federal legislation, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (U.S. Department of Education [USDOE], 2018). One strategy employed to meet this mandate is implementing integrated co-teaching (ICT) classrooms in schools. Collaboration between general and special education teachers is critical in delivering quality education for children with disabilities. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to explore the perspectives of four co-teaching pairs—each consisting of a general education and a special education teacher—on their perceptions of collaboration in elementary ICT classrooms. The study was framed …
