High Beta Brainwaves And Emotion Dysregulation In A Sample Of Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Rebecca Carr
High Beta Brainwaves And Emotion Dysregulation In A Sample Of Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Rebecca Carr
Theses and Graduate Projects
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The current study investigated the relationship between high beta brain wave activity, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, and comorbid mental health diagnoses in children with ADHD. Utilizing archival data from the Clinic for Attention, Learning, and Memory (CALM) in Minneapolis, MN, the study included 184 participants aged 6-14 years who underwent quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) assessments. The study utilized linear and logistic regressions to test three hypotheses: whether high beta activity predicted (1) increased anxiety symptoms, (2) emotion dysregulation, and (3) the likelihood of comorbid mental health …

The ability of morphine to decrease cysteine transport into neurons by inhibition of excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAA3) may be a key molecular mechanism underlying the acquisition of physical and psychological dependence to morphine. This study examined whether co-administration of the cell- penetrant antioxidant D-thiol ester, D-cysteine ethyl ester (D-CYSee), with morphine, would diminish the development of physical dependence to morphine in male Sprague Dawley rats. Systemic administration of the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone (NLX), elicited pronounced withdrawal signs (e.g., wet-dog shakes, jumps, rears, circling) in rats that received a subcutaneous depot of morphine (150 mg/kg, SC) for 36 …

Transgressing Gender With Religious Sanction: The Case Of The Jogappas, Aniket Nandan, Swarupa Deb
Transgressing Gender With Religious Sanction: The Case Of The Jogappas, Aniket Nandan, Swarupa Deb
Popular Media
Excerpt:
'Ten years ago, the Supreme Court recognised transgender persons as a third gender beyond the male-female binary. In the National Legal Service Authority vs Union of India verdict in April 2014, the court upheld the fundamental rights of transgender persons.
Yet, in the Indian context, the term “transgender” remains a definitional maze.
...[T]he case of the Jogappas points to the need for caution and cultural sensitivity in studying non-Western societies and unravelling the meaning and significance of the term “transgender”.'

When moving from a very sheltered aquaculture site to a very exposed oceanic aquaculture site, the energy increases proportionally in a continuum. Lojek et al. (in review) considered the primary influential parameters (water current, wave height, wave period, wavelength and water depth) which influence the species, structure, technology, methods, and operational aspects of any aquaculture endeavour and investigated six possible indices which cover these variables. Added to advanced computer modelling, assisted by detailed and constant environmental monitoring, it may be possible to refine site selection, structure selection and design, species selection, equipment and logistic requirements and health and safety requirements. …

Improvement Of Single-Crystal Structures Of Very Heavy Element Compounds By Refining Anomalous Dispersion Parameters, Florian Meurer, Gregory Morrison, Birgit Hischa, Hans Conrad Zur Loye, Christoph Hennig, Michael Bodensteiner
Faculty Publications
Refining the anomalous dispersion parameters of the four uranium compounds NaUF5, NaU2F9, Cs2(UO2)TiO4, and Cs2(UO2)Ti2O6 gave insights into the crystallographic model improvement of very heavy atoms. We found that the values for the dispersive and absorptive parts, f′ and f″, closely followed the X-ray absorption spectra on their L3, L2, and L1 edges. The obtained values are sensitive to the chemical environment at each crystallographically independent position. An incorrect treatment of the anomalous dispersion correction can lead to a wrong crystallographic model. The above-mentioned, already published structures were improved by this process. General guidelines were given for the crystal structure …

Environmental governance outcomes hinge on the design and implementation of management decisions. Yet, available research methodologies can be limited in their ability to capture the complexity of decision-making and implementation processes and in turn predict and explain environmental governance outcomes. We present participatory process mapping as a method for examining the pathways that emerge and evolve over time that result in natural resource management decisions and on-the-ground outcomes, as perceived by participants in collaborative processes. The approach leverages a large-N comparative design, participatory diagraming within semi-structured interviews, and mental modeling toward a method that can fit into both quantitative and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zoledronic Acid Prodrugs: A Potential Therapeutic For Enhanced Drug Delivery And Targeted Treatment, Shweta Wani
Theses & Dissertations
Bisphosphonates, particularly zoledronic acid (ZA), are crucial in managing bone resorption and treating skeletal disorders like multiple myeloma (MM). While ZA has demonstrated significant anti-myeloma activity in-vitro, its clinical use is limited by poor systemic exposure and potential off-target effects. This thesis investigates two strategies to conjugate polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hyaluronic acid (HA) to ZA to overcome these limitations. The first strategy, targeting the tertiary alcohol group of ZA, faced significant challenges due to the difficulty in conjugation. The second strategy, focusing on the hydroxyl group of the phosphonate moiety in ZA, successfully yielded a ZA-PEG conjugate, enhancing …
The Impact Of Social Emotional Learning And Trauma Informed Care On Teacher Well-Being And Capacity In The Classroom., Kathleen Kelley Michalowski
The Impact Of Social Emotional Learning And Trauma Informed Care On Teacher Well-Being And Capacity In The Classroom., Kathleen Kelley Michalowski
Theses and Dissertations
Educators and students have encountered significant challenges, including illness and loss within their families due to events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Traumatic events, like disasters, can greatly disrupt a community's functioning, resulting in widespread losses that surpass the community's ability to cope. Trauma-informed care (TIC) acknowledges that individuals are likely to have a history of trauma and aims to respond appropriately to minimize the likelihood of further trauma. By implementing trauma-sensitive routines and promoting social-emotional learning (SEL) for both students and educators, we can offer them more opportunities for success and emotional growth. It's important to recognize that educators' …

Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Vs. Ptfe-Free Coatings On Paper Label: Analysis Of Label Mechanical And Performance Properties, Chuqi Su
Theses
Post-printed water-based (WB) coatings, commonly known as aqueous coatings, have gained popularity for paper-based label manufacturing because of their environmentally friendly characteristics. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the common additives added to the WB coatings to achieve heat resistance and rub resistance properties for the final product. PTFE is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, and is a category of Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS). As of January 2024, the sale of food packaging containing PFAS is prohibited in the state of Minnesota, with expectations that this regulation will extend to other states because of the proven harm of PFAS to both humans …

Early Diagnosis Of Parkinson's Disease Using A Hybrid Method Of Least Squares Support Vector Regression And Fuzzy Clustering, Hossein Ahmadi, Lin Huo, Goli Arji, Abbas Sheikhtaheri, Shang-Ming Zhou
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that influence brain's neurological, behavioral, and physiological functions and includes motor and nonmotor manifestations. Although there have been several PD diagnosis systems with supervised machine learning techniques, there are more efforts that need to enhance the accurate detection of PD in its early stage. The current paper developed a novel approach by integrating Least Squares Support Vector Regression (LS-SVR) and Fuzzy Clustering for Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) diagnosis. This paper used feature selection and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to overcome the multicollinearity issues in data. This paper used a large medical …

Single-Cell Analysis Of Chromatin And Expression Reveals Age- And Sex-Associated Alterations In The Human Heart, David F Read, Yiing Lin, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Sex differences and age-related changes in the human heart at the tissue, cell, and molecular level have been well-documented and many may be relevant for cardiovascular disease. However, how molecular programs within individual cell types vary across individuals by age and sex remains poorly characterized. To better understand this variation, we performed single-nucleus combinatorial indexing (sci) ATAC- and RNA-Seq in human heart samples from nine donors. We identify hundreds of differentially expressed genes by age and sex and find epigenetic signatures of variation in ATAC-Seq data in this discovery cohort. We then scale up our single-cell RNA-Seq analysis by combining …

Paleo Environment And Archaeology Provide Cautionary Tales For Climate Policymakers, Brett Kaufman, Christopher S. Kelly, Richard S. Vachula
The Geographical Bulletin
Federal climate policy in the United States is still in its infancy and is in large part characterized by efforts to reach a consensus on the very existence and causality of climate change. This has stemmed from a sociopolitical rift within the country, with the objectivity and usefulness of science attacked by detractors. Scientists who are most qualified to defend their methods and provide information to policymakers rarely have an institutional incentive to share this knowledge, but should be encouraged to communicate their findings to the public, especially those who receive public funding. By not doing so, they are effectively …

Star Trek And The Anthropological Machine: Eliding Difference To Stay Human, Jacob Barber
Star Trek And The Anthropological Machine: Eliding Difference To Stay Human, Jacob Barber
The Geographical Bulletin
This article considers the work of Giorgio Agamben’s ‘Anthropological Machine’ (2004) in the depiction of human-nonhuman interactions in Star Trek . While Star Trek aims to present a utopian vision of the future, a contradictory reading is equally plausible . Instead of embracing novel encounters with nonhuman life and technology, Star Trek retreats into an idealized vision of the human . Encounters with the nonhuman become vehicles through which to reinforce this vision of a bounded and pure human subject . In Star Trek, humans are made to be human through their constant encounters with nonhuman forms, and the possibility …

“Most Damning Of All… I Think I Can Live With It”: Captain Sisko, President Obama, And Emotional Geopolitics, David K. Seitz
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper argues that the proliferation of geographical inquiry into popular culture as a prism for understanding geopolitical processes can benefit from more sustained engagement with psychoanalytic theory, particularly the work of Melanie Klein . Klein’s account of guilt and the urge to make reparation as both central to the development of conscience and profoundly unevenly distributed contributes to a critique of dominant, uneven geographies of guilt and encourages a nuanced approach to guilt’s potential ethical implications . To illustrate, I identify resonances between the contradictory legacy of the Obama administration and the character of Captain Sisko on the television …

Owning The Future: Manifest Destiny And The Vision Of American Hegemony In Star Trek, Fiona M. Davidson
The Geographical Bulletin
As one of the most enduring television franchises of the late 20th century, Star Trek has had an unparalleled influence on the popular culture representation of humanity’s future as ultimately utopian . In this paper, however, I argue that even as the on-screen text of Star Trek was condemning the narrow parochial interests of nationalism, greed, xenophobia and fear, the narrative subtext throughout the fifty years of the franchise supported the idea of the expansion of western hegemonic power . The paper utilizes examples from all f ive series and the thirteen films to illustrate the ways in which western …

Lichenometry can be a useful tool to date past events when surface ages are unknown . As a method, lichenometry needs to overcome uncertainties in the understanding of lichen biology . Being fairly ubiquitous, Rhizocarpon geographicum is generally used for dating purposes . Other lichens can and have been used for studies, but are often used in conjunction with R . geographicum . This case study suggests that for areas lacking R . geographicum, Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca may be used as an alternate species if the substrate in question does not have substantial R . geographicum growth . Natural Killer Cell Effector Function Is Critical For Host Defense Against Alcohol-Associated Bacterial Pneumonia, Daniel Villageliu, Kelly C. Cunningham, Deandra R. Smith, Daren L. Knoell, Mason Mandolfo, Todd A. Wyatt, Derrick R. Samuelson
Food for Health: Publications
Alcohol use is an independent risk factor for the development of bacterial pneumonia due, in part, to impaired mucus-facilitated clearance, macrophage phagocytosis, and recruitment of neutrophils. Alcohol consumption is also known to reduce peripheral natural killer (NK) cell numbers and compromise NK cell cytolytic activity, especially NK cells with a mature phenotype. However, the role of innate lymphocytes, such as NK cells during host defense against alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia is essentially unknown. We have previously shown that indole supplementation mitigates increases in pulmonary bacterial burden and improves pulmonary NK cell recruitment in alcohol-fed mice, which were dependent on aryl hydrocarbon …

The study reveals that China exhibits a “Pit Bull” conflict style in 2019 documents, while the United States and …
An Evaluation Of Sediment Transport In The Columbia River Basin: Before And After System-Wide Flow Regulation, Patrick Alan Haluska
An Evaluation Of Sediment Transport In The Columbia River Basin: Before And After System-Wide Flow Regulation, Patrick Alan Haluska
Dissertations and Theses
Erosion and sediment transport are ubiquitous in every riverine ecosystem. Aquatic habitat eroded and sediment removal for infrastructure require deposition of upstream material to maintain morphodynamic equilibrium. A large percentage of total sediment transport occurs during relatively brief high flow events throughout the water-year. Dams are known to modify the ability for streams to freely transport sediment. Depending on the river size and dam type, downstream movement of sediment can be inhibited or completely eliminated. On the Columbia River, 14 dams are situated between the tidal-zone to the headwaters in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The main uses of the dams …

Recent advances in spatial transcriptomics (ST) techniques provide valuable insights into cellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, most analytical tools lack consideration of histological features and rely on matched single-cell RNA sequencing data, limiting their effectiveness in TME studies. To address this, we introduce the Morphology-Enhanced Spatial Transcriptome Analysis Integrator (METI), an end-to-end framework that maps cancer cells and TME components, stratifies cell types and states, and analyzes cell co-localization. By integrating spatial transcriptomics, cell morphology, and curated gene signatures, METI enhances our understanding of the molecular landscape and cellular interactions within the tissue. We evaluate the performance …
