Maximizing Productivity Through Digital Panopticism: Combatting Invasive Employee Surveillance Systems In The Workplace, Amber Wooten
Maximizing Productivity Through Digital Panopticism: Combatting Invasive Employee Surveillance Systems In The Workplace, Amber Wooten
West Virginia Law Review
The United States has experienced rapid advancements in surveillance technology and data collection in the past three decades. Conversely, since the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work opportunities have increased, with many remote workers being subjected to surveillance within their homes. Given the lack of significant statutory measures to safeguard remote employees against incessant surveillance, employers can monitor employees, collect data, and enforce unattainable productivity quotas with little repercussions. Despite these harms, the influx of remote jobs presents significant benefits, especially for states like West Virginia, which faces immense population decline and lacks consistent physical job opportunities. Remote work promotes flexibility and …

Context: The ophthalmic vein (OV) has become a source of increasing curiosity since many aspects of vascular surgery of the orbit have become feasible. At the same time, histochemical analysis of veins, in general, tends to skip the OV. Moreover, age‑related changes in the OVs remain untouched. Aims: Our research explores features of aging in the OV. Settings and Design: We immunohistochemically evaluated the superior and inferior OVs in 49 orbits of 28 formalin‑embalmed human cadavers (age 77.86 ± 13.38) without visible vascular malformations. Materials and Methods: Specimens were stained by hematoxylin and eosin. Verhoeff, laminin, and CD31 stains were …

Improved treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water is critically important in light of the proposed United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) drinking water regulations at ng L−1 levels. The addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) during electrooxidation (EO) can remove and destroy PFAS, but ng L−1 levels have not been tested, and PMS itself can be toxic. The objective of this research was to test peroxydisulfate (PDS, an alternative to PMS) activation by boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation. The influence of PDS concentration, temperature, and environmental water matrix effects, and PFOA concentration on PDS-EO …

Long-Term Trajectories Of Sleep Duration Are Associated With Incident Diabetes In Middle-To-Older-Aged Black And White Americans, Qian Xiao, Kelsie M Full, Martin K Rutter, Loren Lipworth
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Both short and long sleep durations have been linked to higher diabetes risk. However, sleep duration may vary over time, and there has been limited research focusing on individual sleep trajectories and diabetes risk. There are substantial racial disparities in both sleep health and diabetes risk in the USA. Thus, it is important to understand the role of suboptimal sleep patterns in diabetes risk in different racial groups.
METHODS: We assessed long-term trajectories of sleep duration and incident diabetes in 22,285 Black adults (mean age ± SD, 51.1 ± 8.2 years; 64.8% women) and 13,737 White adults (mean age …

A common missense variant in ICAM1 among African American individuals (rs5491; pK56M) has been associated with risk of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but the pathways that lead to HFpEF among those with this variant are not clear. In this analysis of 92 circulating proteins and their associated networks, we identified 7 circulating inflammatory proteins associated with rs5491 among >600 African American individuals. Using weighted coexpression network analysis, 3 protein networks were identified, one of which was associated with rs5491. This protein network was most highly represented by members of the tumor necrosis receptor superfamily. The rs5491 variant …

Genetic studies of nontraditional glycemic biomarkers, glycated albumin and fructosamine, can shed light on unknown aspects of type 2 diabetes genetics and biology. We performed a multiphenotype genome-wide association study of glycated albumin and fructosamine from 7,395 White and 2,016 Black participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study on common variants from genotyped/imputed data. We discovered two genome-wide significant loci, one mapping to a known type 2 diabetes gene (ARAP1/STARD10) and another mapping to a novel region (UGT1A complex of genes), using multiomics gene-mapping strategies in diabetes-relevant tissues. We identified additional loci that were ancestry- and sex-specific (e.g., …

Sarcoidosis is a multiorgan granulomatous disease that lacks diagnostic biomarkers and targeted treatments. Using blood and skin from patients with sarcoid and non-sarcoid skin granulomas, we discovered that skin granulomas from different diseases exhibit unique immune cell recruitment and molecular signatures. Sarcoid skin granulomas were specifically enriched for type 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC1s) and B cells and exhibited molecular programs associated with formation of mature tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs), including increased CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling. Lung sarcoidosis granulomas also displayed similar immune cell recruitment. Thus, granuloma formation was not a generic molecular response. In addition to tissue-specific effects, patients with sarcoidosis …

Introduction: Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that poses significant risks to human health. B[a]P influences cellular processes via intricate interactions; however, a comprehensive understanding of B[a]P's effects on the transcriptome remains elusive. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive analysis focused on identifying relevant genes and signaling pathways affected by B[a]P exposure and their impact on human gene expression.
Methods: We searched the Gene Expression Omnibus database and identified four studies involving B[a]P exposure in human cells (T lymphocytes, hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and C3A cells). We utilized two approaches for differential expression analysis: the LIMMA package and …

Chemical permeation enhancers (CPEs) represent a prevalent and safe strategy to enable non-invasive drug delivery across skin-like biological barriers such as the tympanic membrane (TM). While most existing CPEs interact strongly with the lipid bilayers in the stratum corneum to create defects as diffusion paths, their interactions with the delivery system, such as polymers forming a hydrogel, could compromise gelation, formulation stability, and drug diffusion. To overcome that challenge, we explore the differing interactions present with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an ionic surfactant and a common CPE, and methyl laurate (ML), a non-ionic counterpart with a similar length alkyl chain. …

Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Victorian-Era Taxidermy Bird Group, Daisy Greenwell
Art Conservation Master's Projects
During the Victorian era, taxidermy objects played the roles of educational tools, decoration, and personal adornment. The object at the center of this paper falls into the second category: decoration. It is a taxidermy bird life group, made up of six bird specimens, papier mâché rockwork, and dried plant material mounted on and around a faux tree armature. Owned by the Buffalo Museum of Science, it came to the Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State University with no provenance record or attributions to a known maker. Two goals were developed at the onset of this project: to flesh out …

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces skin photoaging, which manifests as oxidative stress, inflammation, and collagen degradation. Multiple approaches (topical or systemic retinoids, antioxidants, alpha-hydroxy acids, laser, surgery) are used in the treatment of photoaged skin, and the use of topical retinoids is currently a primary clinical treatment. Previous studies revealed that retinoic acid promotes keratinocyte proliferation and reduces melanin deposition and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) secretion; it also causes potential allergic and inflammatory damage to the skin. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of trifarotene, a functional retinoic acid analog, on UV-irradiated photoaging ICR and …

Background: Vascular oxidative stress and low-grade inflammation are important in the pathology of cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension. Cell culture and animal studies suggest that inorganic dietary nitrate may attenuate oxidative stress and inflammation through nitric oxide (NO), and there is a need to investigate whether this translates to humans. Aim: In this randomised, placebo-controlled crossover study, by measuring a combination of multiple blood biomarkers, we evaluated whether previously reported benefits of dietary nitrate translate to a reduced oxidative stress and an improved inflammation status in 15 men and women (age range: 56–71 years) with treated hypertension. Methods: We investigated the …

Adaptive physiological traits of cyanobacteria allow plasticity of responses to environmental change at multiple time scales. Most conventional phytoplankton models only simulate responses to current conditions without incorporating antecedent environmental history and adaptive physiological traits, thereby potentially missing mechanisms that influence dynamics. We developed an individual-based model (IBM) that incorporates information on light exposure history and cell physiology coupled with a hydrodynamic model that simulates mixing and transport. The combined model successfully simulated cyanobacterial growth and respiration in a whole-lake nutrient enrichment experiment in a temperate lake (Peter Lake, Michigan, USA). The model also incorporates non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) to improve …

Introduction Emerging tick-borne viruses of medical and veterinary importance are increasingly being reported globally. This resurgence emphasizes the need for sustained surveillance to provide insights into tick-borne viral diversity and associated potential public health risks. We report on a virus tentatively designated Kinna virus (KIV) in the family Phenuiviridae and genus Bandavirus. The virus was isolated from a pool of Amblyomma gemma ticks from Kinna in Isiolo County, Kenya. High throughput sequencing of the virus isolate revealed close relatedness to the Guertu virus. The virus genome is consistent with the described genomes of other members of the genus Bandavirus, with …
Regretting Nothing, Or Regretting Everything? Postfeminism, Femininity, And Regret In Miss Austen Regrets, Jessica Taylor
Regretting Nothing, Or Regretting Everything? Postfeminism, Femininity, And Regret In Miss Austen Regrets, Jessica Taylor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article considers how regret is mobilized within a postfeminist cultural context, taking the 2007 BBC film Miss Austen Regrets (dir. Jeremy Lovering, UK) as its case study. The article proposes that what is regretted in postfeminist culture speaks to the values and tensions that underpin this cultural context and explores how the expression or experience of regret is treated as proof of women's failures of subjectivity and decision-making. Through examining three of the main characters — Jane Austen, Cassandra Austen, and Fanny Austen Knight — and their interactions with regret, this article argues that both normative femininity and feminist …

Schizophrenia has consistently been associated with increased rates of physical illness and early mortality. One explanation for this association might be poor health behaviors, as people with schizophrenia are more sedentary, less physically active, and more likely to engage in substance use compared to the general population. Schizotypy may be conceptualized as the phenotypic expression of increased risk for schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and dimensional models of schizotypy suggest that it varies on a continuum ranging from non-clinical (i.e. low schizotypy) to clinical (i.e. high schizotypy and dysfunction, as in schizophrenia). Though schizotypy and schizophrenia appear to share similar deficits and …

The involvement of carbohydrates in a plethora of fundamental biological pathways, including disease related processes, has created a demand for molecular probes for elucidating these mechanisms. Accordingly, synthesis of tailored and diverse carbohydrate-like molecules, commonly referred to as glycomimetics, is a very active area of research. Among the more popular classes of glycomimetics are C-glycosides, analogues in which the anomeric carbon of a parent sugar is attached to a carbon substituent. C-glycosides have attracted attention in the medicinal chemistry community as there are several naturally occurring examples with interesting pharmacologically activity. C-glycosides are also of interest because in …
