Entomology Faculty Publications

Stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) have received a lot of attention as there are many economically important pest species. However, the status of species richness, distribution, and taxonomy remain overlooked and outdated in Kentucky (USA). Having such information at a regional scale is crucial to allow the development of suitable pest management and conservation programs. Here, the stink bug fauna of Kentucky was ex- amined from museum specimens, literature, and public online repositories. Overall, 42 species in 28 genera and three subfamilies (Asopinae, Podopinae, and Pentatominae) are listed from Kentucky. Thirteen species are new records for Kentucky, 10 species are considered …

Hemp Regulates The Fitness Of Corn Earworm (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) And Its Tachinid (Diptera) Parasitoids, Armando Falcon-Brindis, Raul Villanueva

Entomology Faculty Publications

Pest management on hemp is still in its infancy, and biological control options are limited. Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm) is one of the key pests of hemp cultivated outdoors, especially on cultivars grown for cannabinoids and grain. In a three-year study, we assessed the effect of diet on the performance of H. zea and its tachinid parasitoids. Parasitized (bearing fly eggs) and unparasitized (without eggs) H. zea larvae were fed on hemp flowers or an artificial diet. Five tachinid species parasitized H. zea larvae, but the most abundant species were Winthemia rufopicta (68.8%) and Lespesia aletiae (28.3%). Overall, 55.2% of …

Introduction: We conducted admixture mapping and fine-mapping analyses to identify ancestry-of-origin loci influencing cognitive abilities.

Methods: We estimated the association of local ancestry intervals across the genome with five neurocognitive measures in 7140 diverse Hispanic and Latino adults (mean age 55 years). We prioritized genetic variants in associated loci and tested them for replication in four independent cohorts.

Results: We identified nine local ancestry-associated regions for the five neurocognitive measures. There was strong biological support for the observed associations to cognitive function at all loci and there was statistical evidence of independent replication at 4q12, 9p22.1, and 13q12.13.

Discussion: Our …

Background

Observational assessments of infant temperament have provided unparalleled insight into prediction of risk for social anxiety. However, it is challenging to administer and score these assessments alongside high-quality infant neuroimaging data. In the current study, we aimed to identify infant resting-state functional connectivityassociated with both parent report and observed behavioral estimates of infant novelty-evoked distress.

Methods

Using data from the OIT (Origins of Infant Temperament) study, which includes deep phenotyping of infant temperament, we identified parent-report measures that were associated with observed novelty-evoked distress. These parent-report measures were then summarized into a composite score used for imaging analysis. …

School of Medicine Publications

There has been a surge of interest in recent years in understanding the intricate mechanisms underlying cancer progression and treatment resistance. One molecule that has recently emerged in these mechanisms is MUC13 mucin, a transmembrane glycoprotein. Researchers have begun to unravel the molecular complexity of MUC13 and its impact on cancer biology. Studies have shown that MUC13 overexpression can disrupt normal cellular polarity, leading to the acquisition of malignant traits. Furthermore, MUC13 has been associated with increased cancer plasticity, allowing cells to undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasize. Notably, MUC13 has also been implicated in the development of chemoresistance, rendering …

Approximation Of Ice Phenology Of Maine Lakes Using Aqua Modis Surface Temperature Data, Sophia K. Skoglund, Abdou Rachid Bah, Hamidreza Norouzi, Kathleen C. Weathers, Holly Ewing, Bethel G. Steele, Linda C. Bacon

All Faculty Scholarship

Studies of lake ice phenology have historically relied on limited in situ data. Relatively few observations exist for ice out and fewer still for ice in, both of which are necessary to determine the temporal extent of ice cover. Satellite data provide an opportunity to better document patterns of ice phenology across landscapes and relate them to the climatological drivers behind changing ice phenology. We developed a model, the Cumulative Sum Method (CSM), that uses daytime and nighttime surface temperature observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on board the Earth-observing Aqua satellite to approximate ice in (the …

Reducing Attack Opportunities Through Decentralized Event-Triggered Control, Paul Griffioen, Raffaele Romagnoli, Bruce H. Krogh, Bruno Sinopoli

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Cyber-physical systems are prevalent in many critical infrastructures and are vulnerable to a variety of attacks from the network. Decentralized control systems are particularly vulnerable since they rely heavily on network communication to achieve their goals. To address network vulnerabilities, we present an event-triggered network connection and communication protocol that minimizes the amount of time agents are connected to the network, reducing the window of opportunity for attacks. This mechanism is a function of only local information and ensures stability for the overall system in attack-free scenarios. Our approach distinguishes itself from current decentralized event-triggered control strategies by considering an …

This paper is a meditation on a journey through the humanities and the pages of the works of the German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, and the eventual conclusion to a pursuit of a medical career. It identifies that while not all paths to a similar endpoint are identical, but each has its own rich merits, twists, and turns.

Contribution Of Type Three Secretion To Competitive Survival Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In The Great Bay Estuary, Anna Lin Early Sep 2024

Contribution Of Type Three Secretion To Competitive Survival Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In The Great Bay Estuary, Anna Lin Early

Master's Theses and Capstones

Over the past 12 years, infections from the ubiquitous coastal bacterium and human pathogen V. parahaemolyticus have increased in the Northeast USA. The majority of the infections here are caused by the hypervirulent ST36 which originated in the Pacific Northwest USA where it caused only sporadic infections. This sequence type seems to have found its niche in the Northwest Atlantic where climate events likely created environmental conditions allowing ST36 strains or strains carrying one of the unique virulence factors on the VPaIγ, associated with this sequence type, to maintain and spread up the coast of New England. In the Great …

Evaluating The Effects Of Wildfires On Microbial Communities And Gene Expression Involved In Nitrogen Cycling In Arctic Tundra Soils, Alma Idali Hernandez Sep 2024

Evaluating The Effects Of Wildfires On Microbial Communities And Gene Expression Involved In Nitrogen Cycling In Arctic Tundra Soils, Alma Idali Hernandez

Master's Theses and Capstones

Wildfires in the Arctic tundra are increasing in frequency in response to global warming.Under this changing fire regime, important components of permafrost ecosystems, such as soils and their microbial communities, are disturbed by the burning of vegetation, organic soils, and their nutrients. Previous studies of wildfires have documented significant changes in nutrient availability following wildfires, including an increase in inorganic nitrogen (N), which is a key nutrient component of soil organisms. Microbes are the main drivers of transformation of soil N, which is ultimately taken up by both microbes and plants as a nutrient source. However, due to the historical …
