Coal Ash Triggers An Elevated Temperature Landfill Development: Lessons From The Bristol Virginia Solid Waste Landfill Neighboring Community, Reagan Patton Witt, Marcelo I. Guzman
Coal Ash Triggers An Elevated Temperature Landfill Development: Lessons From The Bristol Virginia Solid Waste Landfill Neighboring Community, Reagan Patton Witt, Marcelo I. Guzman
UK CARES Faculty Publications
Landfills for disposing of solid waste are designed, located, managed, and monitored facili- ties expected to comply with government regulations to prevent contamination of the surrounding environment. After the average life expectancy of a typical landfill (30 to 50 years), a large investment in the construction, operation, final closure, and 30-year monitoring of a new site is needed. In this case study, we provide a holistic explanation of the unexpected development of elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs), such as that in the city of Bristol (United States) on the border of the states of Virginia and Tennessee, including the initial role …

Seagrass meadows store significant amounts of carbonate (CaCO3) in sediment, contributing to coastal protection but potentially offsetting their effectiveness as carbon sinks. Understanding the accumulation of CaCO3 and its balance with organic carbon (Corg) in seagrass ecosystems is crucial for developing seagrass-based blue carbon strategies for climate change mitigation. However, CaCO3 accumulation in seagrass meadows varies significantly across geographic regions, with notable data gaps in the Caribbean and Central America. Here, we sampled 10 seagrass meadows across an extensive island chain in The Bahamas, part of the largest seagrass ecosystem and one of the largest CaCO3 banks globally, to evaluate …

Improving Volatility Forecasting: A Study Through Hybrid Deep Learning Methods With Wgan, Adel Hassan A. Gadhi, Shelton Peiris, David E. Allen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper examines the predictive ability of volatility in time series and investigates the effect of tradition learning methods blending with the Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP). Using Brent crude oil returns price volatility and environmental temperature for the city of Sydney in Australia, we have shown that the corresponding forecasts have improved when combined with WGAN-GP models (i.e., ANN-(WGAN-GP), LSTM-ANN-(WGAN-GP) and BLSTM-ANN (WGAN-GP)). As a result, we conclude that incorporating with WGAN-GP will’ significantly improve the capabilities of volatility forecasting in standard econometric models and deep learning techniques.

Preliminary Assessment Of Tunic Off-Gassing After Wildland Firefighting Exposure, Kiam Padamsey, Adelle Liebenberg, Ruth Wallace, Jacques Oosthuizen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Evidence has previously shown that outer tunics (turnout coats) worn by firefighters at structural fires are contaminated with harmful chemicals which subsequently off-gas from the material. However, there is limited research on whether this phenomenon extends to wildland firefighter uniforms. This pilot study aimed to explore if the tunics of volunteer bushfire and forestry firefighters in Western Australia off-gas any contaminants after exposure to prescribed burns or bushfires, and whether there is a need to explore this further. Nine tunics were collected from firefighters following nine bushfire and prescribed burn events, with a set of unused tunics serving as a …

Fractional Derivative-Based Analysis Of The Heat Transfer Properties Of Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder, Anas Saeb Alhasan
Fractional Derivative-Based Analysis Of The Heat Transfer Properties Of Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder, Anas Saeb Alhasan
Theses
Understanding the complex interplay between the contracting behavior of the cylinder and the fluid flow dynamics has implications for the design of porous structures for heat exchange and filtration systems. In this study, we investigate the dynamics and thermal behavior of fluid flow past a contracting permeable infinite cylinder. First, we developed a mathematical model based on the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the fluid dynamics around the contracting permeable infinite cylinder. A new simple well-behaved definition of fractional derivative called conformable fractional derivative introduced by authors Khalil et al. [3] is employed to generalize the PDE’s of momentum and energy. …

Corneal transparency and avascularity are essential for vision. The avascular cornea transitions into the vascularized conjunctiva at the limbus. Here, we explore a limbal stromal cell sub-population that expresses ABCB5 and has mesenchymal stem cell characteristics. Human primary corneal stromal cells were enriched for ABCB5 by using FACS sorting. ABCB5+ cells expressed the MSC markers CD90, CD73, and CD105. ABCB5+ but not ABCB5− cells from the same donor displayed evidence of pluripotency with a significantly higher colony-forming efficiency and the ability of trilineage differentiation (osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic). The ABCB5+ cell secretome demonstrated lower levels of the pro-inflammatory protein MIF …

Promising synaptic behavior has been exhibited by memristors based on natural organic materials. Such memristor-based neuromorphic systems offer notable benefits, including environmental sustainability, low production and disposal costs, non-volatile storage capability, and bio/Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility. Here, a 256-level honey memristor-based neuromorphic system is experimentally evaluated for image recognition. In detail, first, 256-level honey memristors are manufactured and tested based on in-house technology; next, the non-linear characteristics and inherent variation of honey memristor devices, which lead to imprecise weight updates and limit the inference accuracy, are investigated. Experimental results indicate that the inference accuracy of the 256-level honey memristor-based neuromorphic …

Dual Base Sige Is-Hbt For Use In Biosensing Applications, Liam Stephen Hayes
Master's Theses
The proposed research is for a novel SiGe-based Ion-Sensitive Dual Hetero-junction Bipolar Transistor (IS-HBT) to be used in both trans-dermal biological sensing as well as Lab-on-Chip (LOC) applications. The end goals for the device designed are two: For one, the research done for this work will be used to substantiate the claims made by Zafar et al. [1] that an HBT-style structure is better suited for biosensing application rather than a conventional Field Effect Transistor (FET) based geometries. Secondly, it provides the final element to be integrated along with a selectivity membrane, as well as with a reverse-iontophoresis system to …

Burnout: Half A Century Of Controversy, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Burnout has become a focal point of concern in the contemporary workplace. The syndrome has elicited undiminished interest among occupational health specialists. The World Health Organization defines burnout as a syndrome "resulting from chronic workplace stress." Burnout is said to comprise three components: (i) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; (ii) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism toward one’s job; and (iii) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. This definition mirrors the conceptualization of burnout embodied in the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the ‘gold standard’ for the assessment of burnout. However, controversies …

Optimal Placement Of Artificial Hair-Cell Airflow Sensors For Bioinspired Flight-By-Feel, Alex C. Hollenbeck
Optimal Placement Of Artificial Hair-Cell Airflow Sensors For Bioinspired Flight-By-Feel, Alex C. Hollenbeck
Theses and Dissertations
The Sparse Sensor Placement Optimization for Prediction (SSPOP) algorithm reduces highdimensional airflow data to a low-dimensional sparse approximation to identify an optimal placement for any number of sensors on airfoil or wing models of arbitrary shape and size, and outperforms conventional optimization techniques in accuracy and speed. For 2D flow this algorithm found a sensor placement solution (design point, or DP) which predicts AoA to within 0.10 degrees and ranks within the top 1 percent of the design space. On 3D wing models SSPOP found four-sensor DPs ranked well within the top 0.10 percent. Experimental validation with velocity and pressure …

Navigating The New Norm: The Fda’S Final Rule On Laboratory Developed Tests (Ldts) And Its Impact On Clinical Laboratory Operations, Rob E. Carpenter
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
On April 29, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a transformative final rule impacting the regulatory landscape for laboratory-developed tests (LDTs). This new regulation categorizes in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) used as LDTs under the same stringent oversight applied to other medical devices, thereby phasing out the agency’s long-standing policy of enforcement discretion. This paper offers a concise historical overview and examines the FDA’s revised regulatory framework scheduled for the next four years, examining its impact on laboratory operations in terms of safety, efficacy, and innovation. It explores how the new rule’s increased compliance demands and economic implications …
Physical Decline Rates: Men Versus Women, Ray C. Fair
Physical Decline Rates: Men Versus Women, Ray C. Fair
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper uses world records by age in running, swimming, and rowing to estimate a biological frontier of decline rates for both men and women. Decline rates are assumed to be linear in percent terms up to a certain age and then quadratic after that, where the transition age is estimated. The use of world records avoids the possible problem of survivor bias in a sample. The decline rates are smallest for rowing, followed by swimming and then running. Decline rates for women are roughly the same as those for men for the swimming events. They are slightly larger for …

Growing Identity Over A Decade: Asl-English Interpreter Education, Kimberly Hale
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The employment context of ASL-English Interpretation programs (ASLIPs) has not been analyzed in a decade. In this study, I compared the institutional type and disciplinary category of 38 ASLIPs operating in 2011 and 57 programs operating in 2021 to determine whether there had been a standardization of academic profile. Over half of the programs in 2021 are in doctoral/research granting institutions (52.6%) compared to only 31.6% in 2011. While the number of programs classified under Schools/Colleges of Education has nearly doubled (11 and 20, respectively), the proportion has remained steady (45.8% and 45.5%, respectively). The proportion of language and/or culturally-related …

How Do Sign Language Students' Attitudes Toward Minority Languages Evolve Over The Course Of Learning A Sign Language?, Stacey Webb, Danielle Morgan, Jemina M. Napier, Robert Adam
International Journal of Interpreter Education
How do sign language learners’ language attitudes toward minority languages evolve over the course of learning a sign language? Students enrolled in the 4-year British Sign Language (BSL)/English interpreting degree at Heriot-Watt University in the UK present an interesting case study since they (1) are speakers of a majority language studying a minority language and (2) seek employment opportunities where they will work with the minority-language community (in this case BSL users) as they interact with majority- language users (in this case English) as interpreters upon completing their degree. To investigate shifts in language attitudes, this study explores how a …

A Framework For Modeling The Impacts Of Adaptive Search Intensity On The Efficiency Of Abundance Surveys., Laura Jiménez, John R Fieberg, Michael Mccartney, Jake M Ferguson
Biology Faculty Publications
When planning abundance surveys, the impact of search intensity on the quality of the density estimates is rarely considered. We constructed a time-budget modeling framework for abundance surveys using principles from optimal foraging theory. We link search intensity to the number of sample units surveyed, searcher detection probability, the number of detections made, and the precision of the estimated population density. This framework allowed us to determine how a searcher should behave to produce optimized density estimates. Using data collected from quadrat and removal surveys of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) in central Minnesota, we applied this framework to evaluate potential …

Identifying Key Environmental Drivers Of Reach-Scale Salmonid Edna Recovery With Random Forest, Shawn A. Melendy, John R. Olson
AES Faculty Publications and Presentations
Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling from rivers has emerged as a promising new method for monitoring freshwater organisms of management concern. However, eDNA sampling cannot yet offer reliable estimates of a target species' abundance/biomass or confident determinations of a species' absence from a river segment. To unlock these abilities—and thereby greatly improve eDNA as a tool for management decision-making—the influence of local environmental factors on eDNA fate must be better understood. At nine river sites across the central California coast, we added a known quantity of novel eDNA (Brook Trout, Salvelinus fontinalis) and collected eDNA at sequential downstream distances for …

Rewriting Nepa: Statutory Continuity And Disruption In A Polarized Era, Daniel A. Farber
Rewriting Nepa: Statutory Continuity And Disruption In A Polarized Era, Daniel A. Farber
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
For decades the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 was a paradigm of statutory stability. In 2023 that changed overnight with a major rewrite of NEPA as part of the debt ceiling bill. The text of the statute was hurriedly negotiated between President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy, and then passed with virtually no debate.
This article is the first to analyze the amendments. Due to the frenzied enactment process, NEPA is now loaded with overlapping and partially conflicting language, provisions that seem nonsensical if taken literally, and perplexing gaps. The article teases apart these problems, concluding that the …

An Artificial Intelligence Report Card For Judicial Review, Zoe E. Niesel
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
The rapid advancement of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), is creating new challenges for judicial review under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). In late 2023, federal administrative agencies publicly disclosed over 700 use cases of AI that employ sophisticated techniques like machine learning and natural language processing. While the APA's flexible judicial review framework certainly allows agencies to utilize new technologies, the APA also requires explainability of agency decisions; thus, agencies must be able to articulate the reasoning and methodology behind AI-enabled decisions for the purpose of judicial review. This Article examines APA judicial review as it applies to agency …

With high rates of violence exposure among justice-involved youth, it is critical to identify factors that might impact the likelihood of youth engaging in violence themselves. One such factor is sensitivity to context, which describes how sensitive youth are to experiences in their environment. Using an ethnically diverse sample of justice-involved male adolescents (47% Latino, 38% Black/African American, 15% White) aged 13-17 at the time of their first arrest, the results of this study indicate that exposure to violence was related to increased violent behavior six months later, and this effect was strongest among youth who were low in sensitivity …
