Invasive Species Common Names: Working Towards More Inclusive Invasive Species Education And Outreach, Megan M. Weber, Angela Gupta, Nicholas B.D. Phelps, Douglas A. Jensen, Robert C. Venette
Journal of Extension
Invasive species harm natural and managed ecosystems. Awareness and management of these species depends on effective education and outreach. Traditional common names, including those with geographic references, for many invasive pests may perpetuate slanderous terms or stigmatize people from that place. To create more inclusive invasive species educational materials, the University of Minnesota Extension’s Invasive Species Community of Practice developed guidelines for selection of common names. Suggested names were shared with others involved in invasive species communications, leading to broader adoption. These guidelines may be useful to others who struggle to find descriptive, non-alienating common names for invasive species.

First Record Of The Diamond-Backed Watersnake (Nerodia Rhombifer) In Nebraska, Joseph W. Paysen, Keith Geluso, Daniel D. Fogell
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The diamond-backed Watersnake (Nerodia rhombifer) is a fairly large-bodied (≤2100g), semi-aquatic snake associated with wetlands throughout the south-central United States. Distribution of this species closely aligns with river floodplains in parts of its distribution, including the Missouri River floodplain as far north as Holt County, Missouri. Herein, we report on the first record of the Diamond-backed Watersnake in Nebraska. On May 21, 2011, Daniel D. Fogell collected a juvenile Diamond-backed Watersnake in southeastern Richardson County representing the first occurrence of the species in the state, which is adjacent to Holt County, Missouri. In extreme southeastern Nebraska, the distribution of this …

Faculty Research 2024
The use of organoid models in biomedical research has grown substantially since their inception. As they gain popularity among scientists seeking more complex and biologically relevant systems, there is a direct need to expand and clarify potential uses of such systems in diverse experimental contexts. Herein we outline a high-content screening (HCS) platform that allows researchers to screen drugs or other compounds against three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems in a multi-well format (384-well). Furthermore, we compare the quality of robotic liquid handling with manual pipetting and characterize and contrast the phenotypic effects detected by confocal imaging and biochemical assays in …

A New Record Of Fleas From Nilgai Antelope In Southern Texas And Fleas From Other Wildlife, Sarah E. Mays Maestas, Jason Tidwell, John A. Goolsby, Lauren P. Maestas
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Wildlife are hosts of ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks that may transmit human and animal pathogens. Little is known about the ecology of many ectoparasite species native to southern Texas, or their role in pathogen maintenance and transmission. Much attention has been given to the role of nonnative nilgai antelope as cattle fever tick hosts and agents of dispersal, but little attention has been given to other ectoparasites that may utilize nilgai antelope as hosts. As southern Texas is a hot-spot for flea-borne (murine) typhus, it is important to examine flea species presence, abundance, and host use in this …
Drivers Of Microparticles Abundance In Freshwater Fish And Macroinvertibrates, Elizabeth Kazmierczak
Drivers Of Microparticles Abundance In Freshwater Fish And Macroinvertibrates, Elizabeth Kazmierczak
Master's Theses
Anthropogenic microparticles (MP) (i.e., particles < 5 mm) are defined as materials of manufactured origin found in the environment. They are widespread and a rapidly emerging global contaminant. MP include microplastics (< 5 mm), as well as other microfibers or particles, which can be synthetic, semi-synthetic and non-synthetic. Rivers are a critical source of plastics to oceans, and MP within rivers are retained in part though biological processes, including ingestion. MP ingestion by freshwater biota varies by proximity to point sources (e.g., wastewater treatment plants; WWTP), overall environmental concentrations, and trophic level and functional feeding groups, but few studies have examined these factors together. In our first study we examined fish collected in the North Shore Channel of the Chicago River to determine MP abundance within organisms. We then compared trophic position (i.e., δ15N) and proximity to a WWTP. With all species combined, MP concentration were not significantly different across study sites, but stable isotopes increased downstream. Considered individually, MP abundance relative to WWTP proximity varied by species, which we attributed to habitat preference and mobility. In a second project, we collected macroinvertebrates from three different watersheds in North America and compared the abundance of MP in macroinvertebrates to concentration within the environment (i.e., water column, surface, and benthic). Functional feeding groups were a significant predictor in the amount of microparticles found in macroinvertebrates. Additionally, the concentration of water column microparticles showed a positive relationship with all macroinvertebrate’s microparticle abundance. Results will aid in understanding the ecological impacts of MPs on aquatic food webs and the pathways in which they can enter.

Mechanistic Study Of Dna Ligase Iv-Mediated Double-Strand Break Repair In Non-Homologous End Joining, Tasmin Naila, Alan E. Tomkinson
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) is a crucial double-strand break repair pathway in mammalian cells, resolving DNA damage from ionizing radiation and during V(D)J recombination. Although DNA Ligase IV is the only mammalian DNA ligase involved in NHEJ, it functions as a single-turnover enzyme in vitro. Recent cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) studies revealed two LigIV molecules at the NHEJ synapse, supporting the hypothesis that two ligase molecules are needed for DSB repair by NHEJ. This study aims to validate this hypothesis by providing evidence for coordinated ligation at optimal distance and polarity preference for catalytic activity by LigIV. We determined that coordination …

Phenibut is an anxiolytic agent that was originally used as a treatment for anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and insomnia. It is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mimetic, which stimulates GABA receptors in the brain. This increases the inhibitory effects of GABA leading to a greater chance of a sedative response and risk for abuse. It is not currently registered in Western countries but is easily accessible online as a supplement. This is a systematic review of case reports of phenibut patients with withdrawal symptoms published in the PubMed database between January 2010 and October 2023. Following the inclusion criteria …
