Oral Manifestations Of The Dengue Virus, Griffin S. Eisele, Roman E. Brown Bs, Kristi Soileau Dds, Med, Mshce, Facd, Ficd
New Orleans Dental Association News
Dengue Fever, caused by the DENV virus, is a growing health concern, especially in arid regions. The disease presents oral symptoms that dentists must recognize for timely diagnosis. Dental professionals should exercise caution during surgical procedures due to potential hemorrhagic complications. Early identification and management of oral manifestations can prevent severe outcomes.

Stigma Experience Of Men With Eating Disorders: A Scoping Review, Rachael Maloney, Louise Lunney, Olivia-Mari Lennox, Elena Vaughan, Colette Kelly
Journal of Social Care
This scoping review aimed to synthesise the literature concerning the stigma experiences of men with eating disorders. Seven databases were searched using relevant keywords and subject headings. Following deduplication, articles published since 2000 were screened against eligibility criteria. Key information was charted and analysed using descriptive statistics and deductive content analysis. The final sample (n=9) was synthesised under four categories of stigma experiences within the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework. Internalised stigma was the most prevalent stigma experience across the included studies. This review suggests that men with eating disorders experience stigma in many forms and across various contexts, including …

Albinism In Olivierus Martensii (Karsch, 1879) (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Victoria Tang, Zhenbang Liu
Euscorpius
This is a formal case report for the albinism in Olivierus martensii (Karsch, 1879). Albino phenotype is compared with its normal counterpart in terms of their morphology and behavior by cursory experiments. The examined 7 albino individuals (5 of which were adults) were smaller and more slender than their normal counterparts. However, these quantitative differences were not statistically significant and should be treated with caution due to the low sample size. Their abilities to detect both white light and UV light or UV-excited fluorescence were not significantly undermined, although their tendency to ensure a clear vision through self-cleaning behavior appeared …

Advancements In The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner Measurement Technology For Enhanced Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, John J. Langan, Jungyun Bae
Michigan Tech Publications
The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner (PHySS) represents a significant breakthrough in monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically targeting the “Florida red tide” caused by Karenia brevis. By utilizing a Fourth-Derivative Spectral Similarity Index (SI), this study establishes a strong positive correlation between the SI and phytoplankton counts, underscoring the PHySS’s potential for early detection and effective management of HABs. Our findings suggest that the PHySS could act as a predictive tool, offering crucial lead time to mitigate the ecological and economic repercussions of blooms. However, this study also identifies certain limitations of the PHySS technology, such as its inability to …

The genomes of living lungfishes can inform on the molecular-developmental basis of the Devonian sarcopterygian fish–tetrapod transition. We de novo sequenced the genomes of the African (Protopterus annectens) and South American lungfishes (Lepidosiren paradoxa). The Lepidosiren genome (about 91 Gb, roughly 30 times the human genome) is the largest animal genome sequenced so far and more than twice the size of the Australian (Neoceratodus forsteri)1 and African2 lungfishes owing to enlarged intergenic regions and introns with high repeat content (about 90%). All lungfish genomes continue to expand as some transposable elements (TEs) are still active today. In particular, …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms aggregates known as biofilms. Previous studies have shown that when P. aeruginosa is cultivated in space, thicker and structurally different biofilms are formed than from those grown on Earth. We investigated how microgravity, simulated in a laboratory setting, influenced the growth, colonization, and virulence potentials of a P. aeruginosa PA14 wild-type strain, as well as two surface attachment-defective (sad) mutants altered at crucial biofilm-forming steps: flgK and pelA. Using high-aspect ratio rotating-wall vessel (HARV) bioreactors, P. aeruginosa bacteria were grown to stationary phase under prolonged (6 days) exposure to simulated microgravity or normal gravity …

This study probes two solvates of triphenylamine (TPA) bis-urea macrocycle 1 and their activated structures to evaluate their maximum photoinduced radicals (PIRs), the subsequent decay of the radicals, and their regeneration. The hierarchical assembly of TPAs shows promise in stabilizing less substituted derivatives, potentially expanding the utility of TPAs that lack stabilizing para-substituents. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that host 1 adopts a planar conformation with the two ureas pointing in opposite directions when dimethoxyethane (DME) is encapsulated within the channel. Whereas previously, 1 adopted a bowl-shaped conformation with the two ureas pointing in the same direction (syn …

The role of rare non-coding variation in complex human phenotypes is still largely unknown. To elucidate the impact of rare variants in regulatory elements, we performed a whole-genome sequencing association analysis for height using 333,100 individuals from three datasets: UK Biobank (N = 200,003), TOPMed (N = 87,652) and All of Us (N = 45,445). We performed rare ( < 0.1% minor-allele-frequency) single-variant and aggregate testing of non-coding variants in regulatory regions based on proximal-regulatory, intergenic-regulatory and deep-intronic annotation. We observed 29 independent variants associated with height at P < 6×10-10" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: inherit; display: inline-block; line-height: 0; font-size: 18.08px; font-size-adjust: none; overflow-wrap: normal; text-wrap-mode: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 1px 0px; color: rgb(33, 33, 33); font-family: BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Fira Sans", "Droid Sans", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; position: relative;">6×10−106×10-10 after conditioning on previously reported variants, with effect sizes ranging from -7cm to +4.7 cm. The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple
The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During periods of heightened political intensity, gay individuals experience increases in discrimination and prejudice, impacting their mental health, making the need for advocacy and support, particularly from parents and guardians, vital. Recent research shows that parent–child relationships can be heavily influenced by politics and the intensity of their political beliefs. Historically, conservative views have been associated with anti-gay sentiment, which can exacerbate gay individuals’ mental health, leading to familial discord, depression, self-harm, and suicide, whereas liberal views have been associated with supporting gay rights and decreasing mental health disparities. However, prior research has not explored the specific role of parental …

The BAF chromatin remodeler regulates lineage commitment including cranial neural crest cell (CNCC) specification. Variants in BAF subunits cause Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), a congenital disorder characterized by coarse craniofacial features and intellectual disability. Approximately 50% of individuals with CSS harbor variants in one of the mutually exclusive BAF subunits, ARID1A/ARID1B. While Arid1a deletion in mouse neural crest causes severe craniofacial phenotypes, little is known about the role of ARID1A in CNCC specification. Using CSS-patient-derived ARID1A induced pluripotent stem cells to model CNCC specification, we discovered that ARID1A-haploinsufficiency impairs epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process necessary for CNCC delamination and migration from …

Categorical Differences: Social Identity Heuristics Predict Differences In Cognitive Empathy, Corey Ronald Sims
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The current study aimed to identify if there was a relationship between cross-ethnic racial identity and cognitive empathy for others and whether social and personal identities mediated this effect. Self-categorization theory was used as the theoretical framework. In this study, it was hypothesized that cross-ethnic racial identity significantly predicts empathic accuracy, and that social and personal identities mediate this relationship. A non-experimental, researcher-designed survey was used to collect participant data and demographic characteristics. Participant inclusion criteria were an age between 18 and 55, U.S. citizenship, and a self-identification as Asian American, Black American, Hispanic American, or White American. The Cross-Ethnic …

Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of …

Romi: A Randomized Two-Stage Basket Trial Design To Optimize Doses For Multiple Indications, Shuqi Wang, Peter F Thall, Kentaro Takeda, Ying Yuan

Optimizing doses for multiple indications is challenging. The pooled approach of finding a single optimal biological dose (OBD) for all indications ignores that dose-response or dose-toxicity curves may differ between indications, resulting in varying OBDs. Conversely, indication-specific dose optimization often requires a large sample size. To address this challenge, we propose a Randomized two-stage basket trial design that Optimizes doses in Multiple Indications (ROMI). In stage 1, for each indication, response and toxicity are evaluated for a high dose, which may be a previously obtained maximum tolerated dose, with a rule that stops accrual to indications where the high dose …

The 2016 and 2021 World Health Organization 2021 Classification of central nervous system tumors have resulted in a major improvement in the classification of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant gliomas. With more effective treatments many patients experience prolonged survival. However, treatment guidelines are often still based on information from historical series comprising both patients with IDH wild-type and IDH-mutant tumors. They provide recommendations for radiotherapy and chemotherapy for so-called high-risk patients, usually based on residual tumor after surgery and age over 40. More up-to-date studies give a better insight into clinical, radiological, and molecular factors associated with the outcome of patients with …

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors in adults and are increasing in incidence due to the aging population and increased access to neuroimaging. While most exhibit nonmalignant behavior, a subset of meningiomas are biologically aggressive and are associated with treatment resistance, resulting in significant neurologic morbidity and even mortality. In recent years, meaningful advances in our understanding of the biology of these tumors have led to the incorporation of molecular biomarkers into their grading and prognostication. However, unlike other central nervous system (CNS) tumors, a unified molecular taxonomy for meningiomas has not yet been established and remains an …

Background: Brain metastases (BM) are a common, severe complication in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and are difficult to treat due to their complex tumor biology and the intricate microenvironment of the brain.
Objectives: This review examines the current role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating NSCLC with BM, focusing on the latest clinical trials, emerging strategies, current guidelines, and future directions. We highlight the efficacy of ICIs as monotherapy and in combination with other treatments such as radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, chemotherapy, and anti-VEGF agents.
Results: While no single treatment sequence is universally accepted, combining ICIs with …

Leptomeningeal metastases (LM) are increasingly becoming recognized as a treatable, yet generally incurable, complication of advanced cancer. As modern cancer therapeutics have prolonged the lives of patients with metastatic cancer, specifically in patients with parenchymal brain metastases, treatment options, and clinical research protocols for patients with LM from solid tumors have similarly evolved to improve survival within specific populations. Recent expansions in clinical investigation, early diagnosis, and drug development have given rise to new unanswered questions. These include leptomeningeal metastasis biology and preferred animal modeling, epidemiology in the modern cancer population, ensuring validation and accessibility of newer leptomeningeal metastasis diagnostics, …

It remains unknown whether, and how intestinal stem cells (ISC) adapt to inflammatory exposure, and if the adaptation leaves scars will affect their subsequent regeneration. We investigated the consequences of inflammation on Lgr5+ISCs in well-defined clinically relevant models of gastrointestinal acute graft-versus-host disease (GI GVHD). Utilizing single cell transcriptomics, organoid, metabolic, epigenomic and in vivo models we found that Lgr5+ISCs undergo metabolic changes that lead to accumulation of succinate, which reprograms its epigenome. These changes reduced the ability of ISCs to differentiate and regenerate ex vivo in serial organoid cultures and also in vivo following serial transplantation. Furthermore, ISCs demonstrated …
