America: The Janus Nation, Peter Murphy Nov 2024

America: The Janus Nation, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

America is a paradoxical society. That is one of its strengths. One of its weaknesses is its periodic inability to understand its own paradoxical nature. It is a Janus nation, one in which (in principle) incompatible things exist in a simultaneous state. When this paradoxical fusion works, it has great benefits. When it fails to work, American society loses its inner equilibrium. Pugnacious antagonisms arise in its place. The tension within the United States between the drive toward a union of opposites (most famously embodied in its Constitution) and the periodic centrifugal spinning out of American society into a state …

The Androgynous Baglan: Interruption, Withdrawal, And Reclaiming, Aurelio S. Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The pursuit of decolonization is a first act in the manifold acts of real, because substantive, liberation of a colonized country like the Philippines. The reason is clear: every colonizer not only colonizes a country but invades and occupies the mind of the people of that country, puts a claim to their bodies, and replaces their language and cultural practices with his own to complete his violent act of “discovering” the Other. Even with independence granted to a colonized people, the intellectual residues in a colonized consciousness that has coopted with the colonizer if only to survive continue to haunt, …

How To Love In Easy Steps: Heteronormativity, Queer Love, And Foucault's Counter-Conduct, Hannah Jane S. Carpiso, Ninotchka Mumtaj B. Albano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Love is one of the most pervasive human experiences, yet its definition remains elusive to this day. Attempts to describe love have led to the institutionalization and privileging of heterosexual identities, relationships, and ways of loving. Michael Warner refers to this phenomenon as “heteronormativity,” which rigidifies subjectivities and relationalities into fixed, heterosexist structures. However, queer love unfolds in ways different from this relational structure. It invents and re-invents love, relationalities, and subjectivities by moving beyond the dichotomies of heteronormativity. The inventive characteristic of queer love is found in what is known as the “gay mode of life,” an instance of …

Ai: A New Lone-Wolf Terrorism In The Digital Era (Preliminary Analysis), Marthsian Yeksi Anakotta Mya

Journal of Terrorism Studies

This article addresses two fundamental inquiries: can AI engage in acts of terrorism? If so, how might such a phenomenon occur? My hypothesis posits that AI is capable of independently committing acts of terrorism, a classification derived from the study of terrorism known as lone-wolf terrorism. To address these dual issues, this article adopts a criminological approach, which is further elaborated through an examination of lone-wolf terrorism and the advancement of artificial intelligence. As is widely recognized, contemporary terrorist organizations have harnessed technological advancements in the realm of information and communication to perpetrate acts of terrorism within the digital sphere. …

Finding Them Before They Find Us: Solving The Emerging Infectious Disease Crisis, Daniel R. Brooks Nov 2024

Finding Them Before They Find Us: Solving The Emerging Infectious Disease Crisis, Daniel R. Brooks

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

The human population grows daily, it’s on the move, and it’s carving a deep technological footprint on our planet. We alter landscapes and perturb ecosystems, inserting ourselves and other species into novel regions of the world, leading to potentially irreversible changes in the biosphere. This is not news. More than 75 years ago, Charles Elton, one of the founders of modern ecology, wrote, “We must make no mistake; we are seeing one of the greatest historical convulsions in the world’s fauna and flora.” We are also in the midst of a public health and epidemiological crisis. Climate change alters movements …

“Before, We Didn’T Eat Manioc Flour”: Historical And Social Transformations In Food Techniques Among Indigenous Peoples Of The Rio Negro Basin In The Brazilian Amazon, Lorena França

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Manioc flour is currently considered one of the main foods consumed by Indigenous peoples in the Northwest Amazon. It is fundamental both to the traditional diet and to adding an "Indigenous flavor" to urban dishes. This article presents an analysis of historical sources that position manioc flour as an important trading commodity since the 19th century and shows how its internal consumption seems to have grown in recent decades. This significance contrasts with the role of manioc flour in mythic narratives about the origin of foods, where it is either not mentioned among the Tukano peoples or referred to as …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Optic atrophy protein 1 (OPA1) mediates inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) fusion and cristae organization. Mutations in OPA1 cause autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), a leading cause of blindness. Cells from ADOA patients show impaired mitochondrial fusion, cristae structure, bioenergetic function, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) integrity. The mtDNA encodes electron transport chain subunits and is packaged into nucleoids spread within the mitochondrial population. Nucleoids interact with the IMM, and their distribution is tightly linked to mitochondrial fusion and cristae shaping. Yet, little is known about the physio-pathological relevance of nucleoid distribution. We studied the effect of OPA1 and ADOA-associated mutants on …

Fisheries Research Articles

Released (or discarded) fish from recreational and commercial line fisheries can experience significant levels of post-release mortality (PRM), affecting sustainability. Although PRM effects are often considered in data-rich (integrated model) assessments, this is uncommon in data-limited assessments. This study investigates impacts of PRM when applying data-limited, length-based assessment methods for four reef-dwelling demersal fish species in temperate Western Australia (Glaucosoma hebraicum, Chrysophrys auratus, Choerodon rubescens and Epinephelides armatus). These species differ considerably in their biology and susceptibility to PRM. For each species simulations were undertaken to (1) evaluate the reliability of a length-based catch curve (LBCC) …

Additive shocks can substantially increase cooperation in otherwise standard public goods game experiments. We study shocks that randomly adjust players’ earnings by a fixed positive or negative amount reported at the end of each round. These adjustments change neither the return to players’ contributions nor the information about other group members. We compare results across four treatments that employ the same group-level adjustment algorithm but frame it differently, with pre-play descriptions that range from omitting all useful information to accurately revealing its 50/50 random nature. In each treatment, overall contributions run about 50% higher than those obtained in the standard …

UNLABELLED: Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is an evolutionary and ancient polymer composed by orthophosphate units linked by phosphoanhydride bonds. In mammalian cells, polyP shows a high localization in mammalian mitochondria, and its regulatory role in various aspects of bioenergetics has already been demonstrated, via molecular mechanism(s) yet to be fully elucidated. In recent years, a role for polyP in signal transduction, from brain physiology to the bloodstream, has also emerged.

OBJECTIVE: In this manuscript, we explored the intriguing possibility that the effects of polyP on signal transduction could be mechanistically linked to those exerted on bioenergetics.

METHODS: To conduct our studies, …

Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra Nov 2024

Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

There are alternative lifestyles. We choose the one which in our opinion will help us to fulfill our voluntarily chosen purpose or meaning of our life. The paper explores the meaning of “meaning of life.” To understand the notion of meaning of life, I have made an exhaustive and critical survey of the philosophical literature of both Eastern and Western philosophy. I have argued that one finds the meaning of one’s life and fulfills it, if and only if one follows one’s true nature and does not blindly follow what others are doing.

Chiron And The Machines Of Loving Grace: On Optimism, Pessimism, And Singularity, John T. Giordano Nov 2024

Chiron And The Machines Of Loving Grace: On Optimism, Pessimism, And Singularity, John T. Giordano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Singularity has been a concern of the developers of cybernetics and artificial intelligence (AI) since the pioneering writings of such thinkers as Norbert Weiner. Yet many accept the inevitability of systems of AI surpassing human control and are optimistic that machine intelligence will harmonize human life with our environment. This essay examines this optimism against a reading of two poets: Richard Brautigan and Friedrich Hölderlin. Through these readings, it will attempt to show that the eclipse of nature by human beings can be used to examine the eclipse of the human being by machine intelligence. Thus, what is missing in …

Exploring The Philosophy Of Development Through UexküLl's Notion Of Umwelt, Yuhi Fujita

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper aims to depict the development of human beings as a transformative relationship between individuals and their world. Anchored on Uexküll’s concept of the environment, “Umwelt,” and further developed through the works of Heidegger, Kokubun, and Merleau-Ponty, I present the relationship between man and the world through the formation of the world and the movement of organisms between Umwelts. For Heidegger, humans live while forming their own world whereas animals can only be “poor in world.” Kokubun further emphasizes that human beings live while moving through various Umwelts. But according to Merleau-Ponty, human bodies reconfigure their fields of action, …
