Mutations in VPS13B, a member of a protein family implicated in bulk lipid transport between adjacent membranes, cause Cohen syndrome. VPS13B is known to be concentrated in the Golgi complex, but its precise location within this organelle and thus the site(s) where it achieves lipid transport remains unclear. Here, we show that VPS13B is localized at the interface between proximal and distal Golgi subcompartments and that Golgi complex reformation after Brefeldin A (BFA)-induced disruption is delayed in VPS13B KO cells. This delay is phenocopied by the loss of FAM177A1, a Golgi complex protein of unknown function reported to be a …

Species Interactions Between Two Cavity-Nesting Songbirds Under The Threat Of Brood Parasitism And Nest Depredation, Shelby Green Dec 2024

Species Interactions Between Two Cavity-Nesting Songbirds Under The Threat Of Brood Parasitism And Nest Depredation, Shelby Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Interspecies interactions are strong drivers of natural selection, but their combined effects in nature are poorly understood. Here I investigate the breeding ecology of wild populations of Carolina Wrens and Prothonotary Warblers – species breeding in sympatry and occupying similar ecological niches but with contrasting life-histories. Wrens are, for example, noisy and aggressive when defending their nests and territories from potential threats and are far less likely than warblers to experience brood parasitism but more likely to experience nest depredation, especially when the density of nesting pairs increases. I hypothesize that the migratory warblers derive a fitness benefit from nesting …

Conservation Genomics In The Federally Endangered Whorled Sunflower, Helianthus Verticillatus (Asteraceae), Samantha Grace Drewry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Genetic diversity among and within populations of species is critical for survival in our rapidly changing world. Conservation genomics links studies of population genomic variation with conservation managers to provide scientific data for species management strategies. The whorled sunflower, Helianthus verticillatus (Asteraceae), is an endangered plant species endemic to the southeastern United States. Only five populations were known to exist, in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, until about seven years ago when additional populations of the species were discovered in Mississippi and Virginia. Population genetic work using microsatellites revealed that the Mississippi population (known as MSCC) was genetically distinct from all …

Efficacy Of Online Laboratory Exercises In Achieving Undergraduate Learning Outcomes In Introductory Astronomy Classes, Kristen Miller, Shelli Carter

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Fully online courses and degree programs are popular with students today. It is important that these courses provide the same rigor and value of a traditional learning experience in a face-to-face classroom in order to ensure mastery of concepts and learning objectives. Online classes typically have suffered due to a lack of hands-on experiences for the students. One remedy to this is to include simulated hands-on work in the course through online laboratory exercises. The belief is that these simulated labs allow students to actively engage in the learning process, thus providing a traditional learning component in the online classroom. …

Epistemological And Ontological Beliefs Of Educational Psychology Doctoral Students, Lia Daniels, Lauren Alston Dec 2024

Epistemological And Ontological Beliefs Of Educational Psychology Doctoral Students, Lia Daniels, Lauren Alston

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

As a discipline, educational psychology is somewhat idiosyncratic in terms of content and methodologies. Such idiosyncrasies are likely rooted in the philosophical history of the discipline which involves both the empirical tradition of Thorndike and the contextualized pragmatics of James and Dewey. Despite this, there is little teaching about epistemological and ontological beliefs in most educational psychology doctoral programs. The purpose of this research was to (a) describe educational psychology doctoral students’ epistemological and ontological beliefs and (b) determine the effectiveness of a four-part activity in supporting students’ learning about epistemology and ontology. This study represents scholarship of teaching and …

Examining The Relationship Between Textbook Formats, Students’ Self-Efficacy And Academic Performance In Higher Education, Anthony Eya Dec 2024

Examining The Relationship Between Textbook Formats, Students’ Self-Efficacy And Academic Performance In Higher Education, Anthony Eya

Dissertations

Ideally, educators would have sufficient data to understand how textbook formats (Ebook and Pbook) can transform negative student behaviors resulting from low self-efficacy to improve their academic performance (Alegre, 2014; Masa’deh et al., 2022). The problem driving this study is the lack of empirical data on the relationship between textbook format, student self-efficacy, academic performance, and behavioral factors that undermine student success in a self-regulated learning environment (Masa’deh et al., 2022). Also, there is a need for data that could inform strategies for solutions to poor student self-efficacy regarding textbook type and low academic performance (Alegre, 2014). This study used …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-severity wildfires create heterogeneous patterns of vegetation across burned landscapes. While these spatial patterns are well-documented, less is known about the short- and long-term effects of large-scale high-severity wildfires on insect community assemblages and dynamics. Ants are bottom-up indicators of ecosystem health and function that are sensitive to disturbance and fill a variety of roles in their ecosystems, including altering soil chemistry, dispersing seeds, and serving as a key food resource for many species, including the federally endangered Jemez Mountain salamander (Plethodon neomexicanus). We examined the post-fire effects of the 2011 Las Conchas Wildfire on ant communities in the Valles …

Analyzing The Efficacy Of Dupilumab On Skin Clearance In Pediatric Patients With Atopic Dermatitis, Naomy Procopoi, Jason Brumitt

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

Severe atopic dermatitis significantly impairs the quality of life for infants and young children, along with their family members and caregivers. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. It is characterized by pruritic, erythematous, and xerotic skin. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis in the pediatric population is much greater than in adults; it is estimated that approximately 15-20% of children worldwide are affected by this condition. Although the majority of these children achieve spontaneous remission in adulthood, mild to moderate disease may often be debilitating and lead to a lower quality of life.

Previously, the only approved …

Going With The Flow: How Direct And Indirect Alterations To Streamflow Influence Headwater Fish Communities In The Southeast, Langston Haden

Dissertations

Streamflow has been deemed the “master variable” regulating riverine communities as it can influence the chemical, physical, and biological components of river systems. Anthropogenic changes have and will continue to alter streamflow through direct (e.g. road culverts) and indirect (e.g. climate change) processes. Understanding how these alterations impact riverine communities is essential for maintaining and restoring ecosystem properties like biodiversity. Our objective is to integrate ecological theory and conservation approaches to understand how direct and indirect alterations to streamflow influence freshwater fish communities within the biodiverse headwater streams of the southeastern U.S. In a test of a standardized barrier protocol …

Aquila And Predator: The Failure And Momentum Of Drone Technologies In The U.S., 1970-2015, Michael Rasak

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This article examines the technological and intellectual histories of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) development in the U.S. from the 1970s until 2015. Borrowing from the field of science and technology studies, the author argues that although early drone development demonstrated a significant degree of heterogeneity (i.e., interpretive flexibility), the spectacular failure in 1987 of one program in particular—the Aquila Remotely Piloted Vehicle—thereafter contributed to a significant restricting of UAS potentialities. Aquila’s demise prompted a Congressional directive in 1988 to consolidate the disparate UAS development efforts within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) under one joint program, ushering in a means …
