Anti-Us Imperialism As Assertion Of Black Subjectivity At The Turn Of The Last Century, Lorenzo Alexander L. Puente Dec 2024

Anti-Us Imperialism As Assertion Of Black Subjectivity At The Turn Of The Last Century, Lorenzo Alexander L. Puente

Kritika Kultura

US imperialism of the Philippines at the turn of the last century raised difficult and painful issues for African Americans struggling to gain justice and equal rights in American society. Kelly Miller, an African American academician and active polemicist for Negro rights, wrote in 1900, at the beginning of the Philippine American War, his essay “The Impact of Imperialism on the Negro Race” to exhort his fellow black Americans to oppose the US colonization of the Philippines and to support Philippine independence. Miller saw through the American government’s policy of “benevolent assimilation” toward the Philippines and recognized its racist underpinnings. …

AUIQ Complementary Biological System

Plant tissue culture is an innovative biotechnological approach developed to meet the escalating global demand for agricultural production with enhanced nutritional value. This aseptic, in vitro technique allows for the cultivation of plant cells, tissues, or entire plants under controlled environmental and nutritional conditions, facilitating the generation of genetically identical clones. The method is indispensable in preserving endangered plant species, boosting crop yield and quality, and enabling year-round production of disease-free plants. Central to plant tissue culture is the composition of the growth medium, which must include a precise balance of macronutrients, micronutrients, amino acids, vitamins, and plant growth regulators …

How Can Research And Advocacy Support Play-Based Early Learning Environments That Foster Whole Child Development To Advance Equity?, Emily E. Schlemmer

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined research about the lack of play in early childhood and how early childhood educators and others could bring play back into classrooms equitably. Play was a developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood classrooms. “We have in us a natural innate built-in drive designed to push us to learn and experience important principles of creativity, things like; curiosity, discovery, exploration, experimentation, communicating, and socializing. This instinctive drive is called play” (Skaggs and Twede, 2023, p.167). Play allowed learners to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Bendixen-Noe (2010) stated that the importance of play in learning was known and …

Society Of American Foresters (Saf) Academic Publications As They Relate To The Curriculum Standards For Saf Forestry Program Accreditation: A Content Analysis, Lisa M. Bentley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Goals that impact decision-making components within academic programs in the university system have the potential to define and change the direction of a field of study, and, with that, should be thoughtfully approached with a certainty of evidence that supports responsible paradigms in forestry education. Periodic revision of the standards for accreditation by SAF influences institutional expectations that result in shifts in forestry education and should be consistent with professional forestry standards. The methodology utilized in this research contextualizes data from a sociological perspective intentionally as a method to holistically integrate data as evidence to support the interpretation of Society …

Improved Detection Of Great Lakes Water Quality Anomalies Using Remote Sensing, Karl Bosse, Robert Shuchman, Michael Sayers, John Lekki, Roger Tokars Dec 2024

Improved Detection Of Great Lakes Water Quality Anomalies Using Remote Sensing, Karl Bosse, Robert Shuchman, Michael Sayers, John Lekki, Roger Tokars

Michigan Tech Publications

Due to their immense economic and recreational value, the monitoring of Great Lakes water quality is of utmost importance to the region. Historically, this has taken place through a combination of ship-based sampling, buoy measurements, and physical models. However, these approaches have spatial and temporal deficiencies which can be improved upon through satellite remote sensing. This study details a new approach for using long time series of satellite remote sensing data to identify historical and near real-time anomalies across a range of data products. Anomalies are traditionally detected as deviations from historical climatologies, typically assuming that there are no long-term …

Modeling The Performance And Resource Requirements For Gamma-Ray Telescope Signal Processing, Shijing Liang Dec 2024

Modeling The Performance And Resource Requirements For Gamma-Ray Telescope Signal Processing, Shijing Liang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the buffering requirements of the data pipeline for the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope gamma-ray telescope. Given the importance and stochastic arrivals of astronomical signals, it is crucial to ensure that each gamma-ray signal is fully buffered to prevent data loss. To achieve this, FIFOs are inserted into the data processing pipeline to prevent bottlenecks during data packet processing. Buffers play a critical role in regulating data flow, preventing data loss, and ensuring efficient data processing. They act as temporary storage areas, absorbing data surges and releasing it steadily, thus maintaining the pipeline’s optimal performance. In general, buffer integration …

The Effects Of Conspecific Stress Cues Caused By Harassment In The Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Megan Quinn Dec 2024

The Effects Of Conspecific Stress Cues Caused By Harassment In The Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Megan Quinn

Honors Theses

Many organisms, especially fish, participate in herding or schooling behaviors for various benefits such as increased survival rates, better hydrodynamic efficiency, or for hunting tactics. Due to being in a tightly packed group, disturbances or predation in their environment can result in group behavioral changes. Fish release hormones into surrounding water through excretions like urine because of a disturbance which may affect their surrounding conspecifics. In this experiment a lone mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) was exposed to a water sample from other conspecifics who were stressed through harassment. Physical behavioral changes such as changes in swimming activity, respiration rates and position …

The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach Dec 2024

The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach

American Studies ETDs

The Social Matter of Opioids: Glitches in Immunity Beyond the Human examines the contemporary opioid crisis and its relationship to capitalism, imperialism, and biomedicine. This dissertation also considers how the twin processes of crisis and racialization relate to how human-opioid entanglements perform and transgress normative anthropological assumptions of difference. Through theories of biopolitics, Black feminism, queer of color critique, and psychoanalytic insight, I argue for a more critical account of the entanglement of humans with opioids where processes of capitalist and imperial crisis produce novel forms of social ontology. I substantiate this by examining speculative tissue economies, interspecies relationality, draconian …

Tanzania Journal of Science

In tropical countries, Mucuna seeds have been utilized to promote better health and ensure a stable food supply. The use of Mucuna pruriens var. utilis seeds in Tanzania has prompted an evaluation of the nutritional composition of two common cultivars grown in the Nanyumbu district. Mucuna seed samples (black-reddish brown and black-greyish) were collected and analyzed for their nutritional content using standard extraction and spectrophotometric techniques. Data analysis was conducted using GraphPad InStat 3.0 software, with a t-test employed to compare means at a 95% confidence level. The results indicated that the differences in nutritional parameters between the black-reddish brown …

Experiences With Crisis And Resilience In Education In Emergencies: Voices And Lenses Of Teachers In Nicaragua, Anita De Anda Dec 2024

Experiences With Crisis And Resilience In Education In Emergencies: Voices And Lenses Of Teachers In Nicaragua, Anita De Anda

Doctorate in Education

This interpretive phenomenological study illustrated how a group of primary school teachers in Nicaragua used ontological values to orient their experiences and negotiations of a destabilizing socio-political crisis compounded by COVID-19. Set within a framework of education in emergencies, this study employed short-term ethnographic methods and trauma-informed principles to explore the dynamic and interconnected domains and relationships during collective duress, and the organic resilience that emerged to preserve core priorities. A history of collective adversity, weak systems, and political hegemony made the nation vulnerable to cycles of emergency while leaving recovery up to individuals, families, and communities. As a result, …

Geomorphic Evolution Of St. Augustine Inlet, St. Johns County, Florida, Kristen Becker Dec 2024

Geomorphic Evolution Of St. Augustine Inlet, St. Johns County, Florida, Kristen Becker

Theses and Dissertations

Tidal inlets interrupt longshore sediment transport, influencing adjacent beach morphology and allowing the exchange of water and sediment between the open oceans and protected back barrier bay. Inlets evolve through a combination of natural processes and are highly dynamic zones where sediment exchanges cause shifting shoreline positions nearby and create new morphological features. Barrier islands/beaches that are close in proximity to inlets evolve and are an important natural feature that dissipates wave energy and protects inland areas. Both natural and anthropogenic processes that affect barrier islands will be investigated during this study, including storm activity, waves, wind, water level, and …

Controlled intracellular delivery of biomolecular cargo is critical for developing targeted therapeutics and cell reprogramming. Conventional delivery approaches (e.g., endocytosis of nano-vectors, microinjection, and electroporation) usually require time-consuming uptake processes, labor-intensive operations, and/or costly specialized equipment. Here, we present an acoustofluidics-based intracellular delivery approach capable of effectively delivering various functional nanomaterials to multiple cell types (e.g., adherent and suspension cancer cells). By tuning the standing acoustic waves in a glass capillary, our approach can push cells in flow to the capillary wall and enhance membrane permeability by increasing membrane stress to deform cells via acoustic radiation forces. Moreover, by coating …

Rational Design Of Nanoparticles For Overcoming Barriers Of Nucleic Acid Delivery: Applications In Cancer Therapeutics, Angelea M. Maestas-Olguin

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The use of exogenous nucleic acid technologies to modulate aberrant protein expression resulting from genetic mutations is a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. The promise of nucleic-based therapeutics is dependent on the development of platforms that effectively protect nucleic acids from nuclease degradation and deliver the nucleic acids to specific intracellular locations (nucleus or cytosol) of target cells. The application of nanotechnology for development of nucleic acid-based nanomedicines is poised to revolutionize the clinical landscape of cancer. In this dissertation, I demonstrated the rational design, synthesis and evaluation of a lipid coated mesoporous silica …

The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes Dec 2024

The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

Women outnumber men in college attendance for the first time in United States history. Research to date has shown that while male privilege persists in the U.S. regarding some aspects of society (e.g., disproportionate numbers of men in leadership positions), men as a whole are decreasingly represented in institutions of higher learning. Liberal arts and Jesuit colleges maintain an even wider gender gap. Particularly, men of color and men from low socioeconomic backgrounds are at an increasing disadvantage in regards to admissions and scholarship review practices. The educational, biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to lack of male achievement are …

Conceptual Curiosity: Sense(Un)Making, Rebekah L. Cowell Dec 2024

Conceptual Curiosity: Sense(Un)Making, Rebekah L. Cowell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Across disciplines, sensemaking is a theoretical and methodological research program, over forty years in development, that has been treated as a framework for understanding how humans behaviorally respond to external information sources and interpret to construct and actualize actionable outcomes; however, sensemaking is an interlinking process that does not operate in singularity–behaviorally or actionably–it is neurobiological (autonomous drive), cognitive (perceptual and predictive), and psychological (congruency in meaning).

This paper enlarges the conceptual framework for studying sensemaking and redefines it by addressing what sensemaking is, does, and needs. At the core of this conversation is addressing the absence of knowledge and …

Time And The Catalogue, Alec Mullender Dec 2024

Time And The Catalogue, Alec Mullender

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper explores the multiple ways in which concepts of time are incorporated in cataloguing and classification to see how these temporal concepts influence how material is organised in library space. It discusses multiple concepts, including the structural influences of the capitalist ‘exchange-view’ of time in how the discipline is organised and its incorporation into the so-called ‘universal’ cataloguing systems. The continued issues of obsolescence within cataloguing systems as language and concepts constantly evolve, and how these are integrated into the systems themselves. The paper also discusses the semantic difficulties with how time itself is expressed within cataloguing systems, as …

Beyond The 'Idols Of The Marketplace': Managing Semantic Change In Research, Christopher B. Rauch, Hyung Wook Choi, Mat Kelly Dec 2024

Beyond The 'Idols Of The Marketplace': Managing Semantic Change In Research, Christopher B. Rauch, Hyung Wook Choi, Mat Kelly

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Semantic change refers to the process by which words acquire new meanings over time or in different contexts, particularly as they transition between disciplines. This shift in meaning, especially when words are adopted as terms in multiple academic areas, often leads to confusion and ambiguity. This study focuses on the terms "agent" and "ontology," tracing their semantic evolution over time and across disciplines to understand how their meanings differ between fields such as philosophy, law, and artificial intelligence. Drawing on insights from Boon and Van Baalen's metacognitive framework, the analysis demonstrates how understanding these differences can help prevent miscommunication.

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders Dec 2024

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Death and grief are an ever-present phenomenon in the Black community. Starting with the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade and chattel slavery; then transcending into mortality rates; police brutality; gun violence; and just living while Black. Statistically, Black Americans die at higher rates than white Americans at nearly every age. As a result, the Black community has always had a very intimate and ambiguous relationship with death and grief. In response to this relationship, the Black community has created our own way of mourning through the formation of unique funeral and vigil traditions, the establishment of Black-owned funeral homes, the preservation of …

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M. Dec 2024

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M.

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The Arctic is currently the most rapidly warming region in the world. Modern-day media has been transfixed by the image of the poor polar bear, eeking out a difficult living as the sea ice they depend on has been melting. What often remains outside of the frame, however, are the more complex questions about how we got to this point of extreme climate change. Linking the genocidal histories of Indigenous assimilation in the Arctic to the modern-day ecological crises plaguing the region introduces the state as an overlooked climate polluter. While Arctic communities are all on the frontlines of climate …

Sankofa In Action: Reclaiming Our Future, Adisa Preston

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Pan-Africanism has been one of the responses to the systematic and brutal efforts by colonial powers to negate the worth and humanity of African peoples. Emerging in the Caribbean and the United States in the 19th-century, it flowered with the independence movements of the 20th. Historian Kwame Anthony Appiah defines Pan-Africanism as “a political project calling for the unification of all Africans into a single African state to which those in the African diaspora can return” (Appiah 1992, 174).

Pan-Africanism sought to heal the catastrophic ruptures of slavery, throw off the shackles of colonialism, and to fight the racist ideologies …
