Attachment-Based Intervention For Inattention, Hyperactivity, And Impulsivity: Does Relationship Matter?, Stephanie M. Ess Dec 2024

Attachment-Based Intervention For Inattention, Hyperactivity, And Impulsivity: Does Relationship Matter?, Stephanie M. Ess

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

While the prevailing notion attributes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) largely to a genetic response, there is increasing evidence of its multifactorial nature, involving both genetic and environmental factors, including the parent–child attachment relationship. Given the limitations of pharmacological and behavioral treatment methods, this study addressed the critical need for alternative ADHD interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity among toddlers approximately 48 months old in an attachment-based intervention group (n = 63), a control intervention group (n = 58), and a low-risk group not requiring intervention (n = 52). Grounded …

Traveling Waves In Biological Population Models, Ahlam Alzahrani Dec 2024

Traveling Waves In Biological Population Models, Ahlam Alzahrani

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we examine the existence of traveling waves in population models. We begin by exploring conditions under which traveling waves exist, even when the migration probability lacks a density function or, if the density function exists, it may be discontinuous. To address this, we impose certain conditions that ensure the monotonicity of the evolution operator, enabling the application of the Monotone Iteration Method. Next, we explore the existence of monotone traveling waves in a general class of integral-difference population models that depend on both the previous state and long-term memory, allowing for the consideration of multiple past states. …

Integrative Single-Cell Genomics And Machine Learning Methods For Tumor Microenvironment Characterization And Survival Prediction, Wenjuan Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The tumor microenvironment (TME) comprises diverse cell types and plays crucial roles in cancer development and therapeutic response. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data quantifies gene expression at the single-cell level, enabling the dissection of heterogeneous cell populations in various biological contexts and diseases. In this work, we developed integrative single-cell genomics and machine learning approaches to characterize the TME and enhance patient survival prediction. We introduced a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based method, cnnImpute, to address the high proportion of missing data in scRNA-seq datasets. cnnImpute effectively imputes missing values while preserving the integrity of cell clusters, achieving superior performance in …

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent and complex condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This chapter explores the genotype-by-environment interactions that contribute to the development and progression of NAFLD in the Mexican American population. Using advanced genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics approaches, we investigated how specific genetic variants interact with environmental factors such as depression, acculturation stress, and social determinants of health, to influence NAFLD risk and severity. Our findings reveal significant genotype-by-environment interactions for key NAFLD-related traits, including HbA1c, AST/ALT ratio, and steatosis-controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). We also discuss the application of cutting-edge proteomic and transcriptomic …

Probate Standing, David Horton Dec 2024

Probate Standing, David Horton

Michigan Law Review

Few topics in civil justice have sparked as much criticism as the standing doctrine. The U.S. Constitution and some of its state counterparts require plaintiffs to allege that they suffered an “injury-in-fact” that the defendant caused and that a court can redress. A veritable ocean of commentary argues that this requirement [is confusing, ahistorical, and unmoored from its objectives.

Yet a different manifestation of the standing doctrine has long lurked in obscurity. Standing issues are also common in state probate courts, where the transmission of assets from the dead to the living can affect a variety of parties. But in …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) are resistant to most cancer therapeutics and contribute to tumor recurrence and metastasis. Two breast CSC-promoting transcription factors, truncated glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 (tGLI1) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), have been reported to be frequently co-expressed in HER2-enriched breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), undergo protein-protein interactions for gene regulation and activation, and functionally cooperate to promote breast CSCs. STAT3 can be activated by activated interleukin-6 receptor/glycoprotein-130 (IL-6R/GP130). Co-targeting of tGLI1 and IL-6R/GP130 has not been investigated in breast cancer or any tumor type. Here, we report that tGLI1 and …

Makara Journal of Science

The increasing use of disposable plastic bags is affecting environmental problems because it requires thousands of years to degrade naturally. To overcome these problems, mealworms (larvae of Tenebrio molitor L.) become an alter-native solution. They can be considered as biodegradation agents of plastic because of the presence of symbiont bacte-ria in its gut that secretes plastic-depolymerizing enzymes. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the degradation and digestion ability of T. molitor in consuming various plastic types and thickness. Two designs have also been used: first, comparing the degradation and digestion of various plastic types, and second, comparing the degradation and …

N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (Nmda) Receptors Control Calcium Signaling In Striatal Neurons To Guide Value-Based Learning, Alex Legaria Macal

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) play an essential role in neuronal function. Activation of NMDARs leads to calcium influx into postsynaptic neurons, which regu?late many fundamental aspects of neuronal physiology including synaptic plasticity, gene expression, and excitability. In the striatum, the input region of the basal ganglia, NM?DAR activity has been shown to regulate physiological function of striatal neurons, such as synaptic plasticity and excitability, and they also modulate behavior, particularly op?erant learning. However, there are many fundamental questions about the signaling and effects of NMDARs in vivo that have yet to be resolved. Moreover, the link between the physiological and behavioral …

Pmp2+ Scs Maintain The Survival And Functioning Of Large-Caliber Motor Axons, Mikolaj Kozlowski Dec 2024

Pmp2+ Scs Maintain The Survival And Functioning Of Large-Caliber Motor Axons, Mikolaj Kozlowski

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by selective neuronal vulnerability, a phenomenon in which a specific pathology induces the death of a particular subpopulation of neurons. For example, selective neuronal vulnerability in the peripheral nervous system results in sensory, motor, or mixed peripheral neuropathies. While the intrinsic differences between neuronal subtypes cannot fully explain the basis of selective neuronal vulnerability, it is plausible that it partially stems from neuron extrinsic mechanisms such as the malfunction of distinct Schwann cell (SC) subtypes. Recently, we identified an exciting subpopulation of myelinating SCs characterized by the expression of Adamtsl1, Cldn14, and Pmp2 (hereafter referred to …

Unveiling Soil Microbial Communities And Resistomes In Northern Alaska National Wildlife Refuges, Bevyn Amber Cover

Biological Sciences

Microbial communities residing in pristine high-latitude soils play a critical role in ecosystem function, but also harbor potential threats such as acting as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Current knowledge about these microbial communities and the resistance genes they carry presents limits to the ability to predict how these ecosystems will respond to climate change. This knowledge gap is particularly concerning in light of the potential public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance harbored within these communities as antibiotic-resistant human infections continue to increase. This study investigated the microbial communities and details the antimicrobial resistance gene reservoirs in previously …

Effects Of Juvenile Mass On Reproduction And Calf Survival In A Low-Density Moose Population, Sara R. Henslee

Biological Sciences

Moose (Alces alces) are a valuable big game species in Alaska and serve as a critical food source for residents. Near Nome, Alaska, the local moose population has remained at low densities for decades, and there is strong public interest in investigating the cause behind the population's failure to increase in abundance. Compared to other moose populations in Alaska, the population of moose near Nome does not appear to be nutritionally limited or close to carrying capacity. I sought to explore how juvenile mass, a widely used metric to assess moose nutritional status in Alaska, influences reproductive output and subsequent …
