Loving-Learning-Leading-Living: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of A Black Gay Father, Russell E. Thornhill

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation examines the roles, challenges, and contributions of a Black Gay father, a demographic largely absent from academic discourse. While literature explores themes of the church, LGBTQ+ identities, and social justice, there remains a critical gap addressing the lived experiences of a Black Gay father. This study fills that void by elevating narratives as community activists, family leaders, and clergy members, acknowledging their transformative impact within familial and societal structures. The methodology used is the Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN). It allows for in-depth, reflective engagement with personal experiences in conversation with scholars while situating them within broader sociocultural, theological, …

The Air We Breathe: How Whiteness Permeates Racial Equity Efforts In Suburban Schools, Bailey Elizabeth Tighe Jan 2025

The Air We Breathe: How Whiteness Permeates Racial Equity Efforts In Suburban Schools, Bailey Elizabeth Tighe

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This critical ethnographic study examines how white culture influences educators' perceptions of their participation in racial equity work in a predominantly white, suburban Massachusetts public school district. This research explored five educators' experiences through Critical Race, Critical Whiteness, and White Supremacy Culture Frameworks. The study extends CWS by illuminating how white cultural norms operate within institutional contexts, revealing patterns through which racial equity work is neutralized. The study found that superficial equity initiatives, color-evasive language, and prioritizing white comfort over substantive transformation all actively perpetuate inequity. Recommendations directly address these findings: developing comprehensive professional development that explicitly names whiteness and …

Heart-Thinking Leadership: A Transformative Approach To Binary Hierarchies In Waldorf Schools, Chiaki Uchiyama

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study explores heart-thinking leadership as a transformative approach to dismantling elitism, hierarchy, and binary structures in education, leadership, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Grounded in insights from Damásio, Spinoza, Emerson, Hegelian dialectics, and wisdom traditions such as Manichaeism, African spirituality, and Indigenous feminism, it examines how third space thinking fosters inclusivity and dynamic leadership. By integrating intuition, intellect, and relational awareness, heart-thinking leadership moves beyond rigid dualisms—mind and body, self and other, power and subjugation—to cultivate a holistic way of knowing. This perspective critiques conventional DEI models that reinforce binaries of oppressor and oppressed, advocating instead for an …

The Experience Of Psychologists In Providing Unexpected Feedback During Neurodevelopmental Evaluations, Alyssa J. Mayer

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of licensed psychologists who provided unexpected feedback to assessment clients about not meeting the criteria for neurodevelopmental disorders. Individuals are increasingly seeking formal evaluation for neurodevelopmental disorders based on anecdotal information they come across on the internet. Many people develop strong identity attachments to these diagnostic labels, and it can be incredibly dysregulating to learn that they do not meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Six psychologists participated in semi-structured virtual interviews to share their experiences providing clients with this type of unexpected feedback. Through an interpretive phenomenological analysis framework, …

The Lived Experience Of Fly Fishing And Its Significance For Cultivating A Communion Of Subjects, Eric Landon Mcduffie Jan 2025

The Lived Experience Of Fly Fishing And Its Significance For Cultivating A Communion Of Subjects, Eric Landon Mcduffie

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Inspired by the lived fly fishing experiences encountered with my grandfather and the spiritually ecological writings of Thomas Berry, I explored how the sacred art of fly fishing connects participants with the natural world from a universal perspective given to us by Thomas Berry in The New Story. Berry described three principles that make up the entire universe: Differentiation, Subjectivity and Communion. I wanted to understand how lived fly fishing experiences fit into Berry’s three universal principles and how an individual’s lived fly fishing experience(s) cultivate(s) a “Communion of subjects.”1 Answers to these two questions informed five initial approaches to …

Oral Anticoagulation In The Era Of Continuous Rhythm Monitoring, Chu-Pak Lau, Hung-Fat Tse

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Background

Primary prevention of stroke using oral anticoagulants (OACs) is indicated for clinical atrial fibrillation (AF) documented on standard electrocardiogram (ECG) in those patients with a high risk of stroke. The recent availability of both external ECG monitors (either using consumer electronic or medical devices) and implantable devices have enabled earlier AF episodes to be detected before clinical AF become manifest. These episodes, often termed subclinical AF (SCAF), represent an area of controversy for the application of OAC.

Objective

The present review summarises the management of SCAF, based on recent guidelines and publications in the following areas:

  1. In the presence …

An Unusual Cause Of Acute Constrictive Pericarditis, Yue Hin Tang, Raymond Chi Yan Fung

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Constrictive pericarditis, a condition where the pericardium thickens and constricts, has long been considered as a chronic sequela of prior insults to the pericardium such as heart surgery, repeated pericarditis, tuberculosis infection, radiation exposure, etc. Susceptible populations are thus expected to be middle-aged.

We present a case in which a young gentleman was diagnosed with acute constrictive pericarditis due to Adult-onset Still’s disease with macrophage activation syndrome. This case illustrated that constrictive pericarditis could happen in acute settings and thus the importance of cardiologists to maintain open-minded in search of a diagnosis

Introduction: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is approved under a humanitarian device exemption to manage treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (TR-OCD) in adults. It is possible that DBS may be trialed or used clinically off-label in children and adolescents with TR-OCD in the future. DBS is already used to manage treatment-resistant childhood dystonia. Evidence suggests it is a safe and effective intervention for certain types of dystonia. Important questions remain unanswered about the use of DBS in children and adolescents with TR-OCD, including whether mental health clinicians would refer pediatric patients for DBS, and who would be a good candidate for DBS.

Cell-cell communication (CCC) plays a critical role in the physiological regulation of organisms and has been implicated in numerous diseases. Previously, we introduced FlyPhoneDB, a tool designed to explore CCC in Drosophila single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets. The core algorithm of FlyPhoneDB infers tissue-specific signaling events between cell types by calculating cell-cell interaction scores based on curated ligand-receptor (L-R) expression across major signaling pathways. However, the utility of FlyPhoneDB was limited by the relatively small number of available L-R pairs.

Here, we present FlyPhoneDB2, a major upgrade featuring a significantly expanded knowledgebase that includes a greater number of L-R pairs, incorporating annotations …

A great deal of attention is being paid to strategies seeking to uncover the biology of the four-stranded nucleic acid structure G-quadruplex (G4) via their stabilization in cells with G4-specific ligands. The conventional definition of chemical biology implies that a complete assessment of G4 biology can only be achieved by implementing a complementary approach involving the destabilization of cellular G4s by ad hoc molecular effectors. We report here on an unprecedented comparison of the cellular consequences of G4 chemical stabilization by pyridostatin (PDS) and destabilization by phenylpyrrolocytosine (PhpC) at both transcriptome- and proteome-wide scales in patient-derived primary human astrocytes. Our …

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Motivation: Spatial transcriptomics (ST) captures positional gene expression within tissues but lacks single-cell resolution. Reference-based cell type deconvolution methods were developed to understand cell type distributions for ST. However, batch/platform discrepancies between references and ST impact their accuracy.

Results: We present Region-based Cell Sorting (ReSort), which utilizes ST's region-level data to lessen reliance on reference data and alleviate these technical issues. In simulation studies, ReSort enhances reference-based deconvolution methods. Applying ReSort to a mouse breast cancer model highlights macrophages M0 and M2 enrichment in the epithelial clone, revealing insights into epithelial-mesenchymal transition and immune infiltration.
