To assess the level of agreement among experts on the heel raise exercise parameters that influence midportion and insertional Achilles tendinopathy (AT) rehabilitation outcomes. An international expert panel in AT rehabilitation was invited to complete a three-round Delphi survey. In the first two rounds, experts were asked to review a pregenerated list of exercise parameters (based on the heel raise exercise) and rate their perceived influence on rehabilitation outcome, using a 5-point Likert scale. For each parameter, consensus criteria for major influence on rehabilitation were (a) median≥4, (b) ≥75% of scoring 4 or 5 and (c) IQR≤1. The third round …

Implementing Gross National Happiness In Bhutan As A Development Model And Governance Tool – Perspectives Of Policy Influencers, Tashi Dorji, Angus Morrison-Saunders, David Blake
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Bhutan’s development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) prioritises the collective wellbeing of its people over economic growth through a multidimensional index that informs policy. While GNH has received global recognition, persistent challenges in conceptual clarity and practical implementation are argued and debated. This qualitative study examines the role and utility of GNH as a development model and its implementation as a multifaceted governance tool in Bhutan. The findings reveal that GNH is conceptualised in diverse ways, ranging from personal happiness to a more generic communal philosophy. While its strengths lie in its culturally grounded framework, key limitations include a …

Introduction: Older care home (CH) residents are particularly vulnerable to infections and often experience adverse outcomes. Despite this group being frequently prioritised for vaccinations, trials of vaccines rarely recruit CH residents. Given that the social and biological characteristics of CH residents may influence vaccine effectiveness, it is crucial to test vaccines in this population.
Methods: The Widening Access to Trials in Care Homes project was established to develop best practice guidance on designing and conducting vaccine trials in the CH population. As part of this project, a scoping review following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was conducted to identify vaccine trials …

Kaartdijin Bidi (Learning Journey): Place-Based Cultural Regeneration At University, Sandra Wooltorton, Lauren Stephenson, Kathie Ardzejewska, Len Collard
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Imagine being in a university that functions in a place-based culturally regenerative way. In this concept paper, the authors bring together theory, practice, and experience, in the service of transforming universities towards place-based cultural regeneration. At present, Australian universities operate using an economic philosophy of neoliberal corporatism characterised by hierarchical management strategies, competitive tendencies, patriarchal values, and discourse characterised by bifurcation or binary thinking. These features illustrate a worldview that is entangled with the meta crises of our times such as climate change, species loss, hatred/intolerance, and unfathomable violence. The authors consider ways of moving towards a place-based, Indigenous-informed, practical, …

Identifying factors which more or less account for performance improvement during developmental stages is essential for sports science knowledge and coaching practice. Accordingly, this study examined the longitudinal, changing, influences of Volleyball-specific Training Engagement (VTE) and Maturity Status on physical test performance development. Participants were N = 139 Swiss female competitive volleyball players, aged 10–14 years at baseline (M = 12.93, SD = 1.15 years). Annually for 3 years, participants completed the 9-3-6-3-9 Agility Sprint; Standing Long Jump [SLJ] and Jump & Reach test. Linear Mixed Models (LMMs) examined longitudinal independent and interactive relationships between VTE (hours/week) and Maturity Status …
The Somatechnics Of Journalism: Applying An Embodied Perspective To Enduring Issues In Journalism Studies, Laura Glitsos, Mark Deuze
The Somatechnics Of Journalism: Applying An Embodied Perspective To Enduring Issues In Journalism Studies, Laura Glitsos, Mark Deuze
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research applies Somatechnics to the study of journalism and contributes to an emergent epistemological “bodily turn” in the discipline of Journalism Studies. This is a turn toward the body, embodied experience, and the inevitable emotionality of journalism and the journalist as brought forth by Chantal Francoeur and Belinda Middleweek, among others. We invite journalism scholars (and practitioners) to understand journalists’ bodies as sophisticated organic technologies—and to subsequently understand how those bodies are further transmogrified by, and collapsed into, the ever-changing world of news media. We deploy a process of retheorising as a qualitative method in which researchers apply new …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to manage pest rodent populations. However, resistance to ARs in target rodent populations challenges pest control efforts and can increase risks to nontarget species. Resistance is frequently associated with nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in the Vkorc1 gene, and this study carried out the first Vkorc1 survey of introduced rats on the Australian mainland. RESULTS: We identified three species of introduced rat using the cytochrome b gene across Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney: Rattus rattus (Linnaeus 1758) (Lineage I); Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout 1769); and Rattus tanezumi (Temminck 1844) (Lineage II). Three nsSNPs were …

Mills, Kym Ottewell, Cathy Lambert, J. Anthony Friend, Daniel J. White, Zahra Aisya, W. Jason Kennington
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Translocating individuals from multiple source populations is one way to bolster genetic variation and avoid inbreeding in newly established populations. However, mixing isolated populations, especially from islands, can potentially lead to outbreeding depression and/or assortative mating, which may limit interbreeding between source populations. Here, we investigated genetic consequences of mixing individuals from two island populations of the dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis) in an island translocation. Despite a high level of genetic divergence between the source populations (FST ranges 0.33–0.64), and significant differences in body size, individuals with different ancestries were able to successfully interbreed in captivity and in the wild. However, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has mostly focused on issues associated with teaching and assessment. In this paper I used AI to support the analysis of data which consisted of public comments on a newspaper article. This small, low risk research was chosen to demonstrate the potential use of AI and how it may support qualitative data analysis. I present my journey from a naïve user of AI to a position whereby I would consider using it as a support for future data analysis. My article touches on some of the ethical and accountability issues for …

Mineralization, Characterization And Selective Degradation Of Lignocellulosic Biocomposite Materials, Steven A. Soini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developing novel functional materials, chemicals and biofuels from renewable plant sources has become a main area of focus within material science. The biosphere contains naturally occurring polymers that can be harvested to this end. Lignocellulosic materials are an important class of plant biomass consisting of three main components, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Wood has an inherent 3D hierarchical structure ranging from the nano- to bulk levels of organization, thereby achieving excellent mechanical properties while maintaining high porosity and low specific density. It carries significant promise for the production of chemicals, refinement of biofuels, and the development of novel functional materials. …
Predicting Early Hospital Readmissions For Diabetic Patients Using Machine Learning, Amanda Ferraz, Leonardo Oliveira
Predicting Early Hospital Readmissions For Diabetic Patients Using Machine Learning, Amanda Ferraz, Leonardo Oliveira
ICT
This project applies machine learning to predict whether diabetic patients will be readmitted to a hospital within 30 days of discharge. Early readmissions are a costly and critical issue in healthcare, often signalling gaps in post-discharge care and risk management. Diabetic patients face unfair high readmission rates compared to the general population. According to the CDC Diabetes Report Card 37.3 million people in the U.S. or 11.3% of the population had diabetes as of 2019 (CDC, 2021). Our goal here is to develop a binary classification model capable of flagging high risk patient (< 30-day readmission) based on their clinical, demographic, and administrative data. This lets healthcare institutions to take measures,

Conversion Of Orange Waste To Chemically Modified Activated Carbon Adsorbent Materials For Aqueous Phase Phosphate Removal, Sierra Mugan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phosphorus pollution in surface waters drives harmful algal blooms, creating ecological, public health, and economic risks. This study examined citrus processing waste as a sustainable, low-cost precursor for producing chemically modified adsorbents for phosphorus removal. Orange waste was pyrolyzed, resulting in a carbon-rich material with low ash content, as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. The material was modified using lanthanum chloride, iron (III) chloride, and calcium chloride at varying mass ratios and screened under standard conditions (1 mg P/L, 1 g/L dosage, 24-hour contact time). Lanthanum- and iron-modified samples demonstrated the best removal efficiencies and underwent further evaluation. The lanthanum-modified sample …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a marker of neuroaxonal injury associated with cognitive decline. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol has neuroprotective properties, but its interaction with neurodegeneration remains unclear. This study examined whether HDL moderates the association between NfL and cognitive performance.
METHODS: Baseline data from 417 participants in the Aging Adult Brain Connectome study were analyzed. Plasma NfL and HDL were measured via Simoa and enzymatic assays; cognition was assessed using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Preclinical Alzheimer Cognitive Composite (PACC). Generalized linear models were used to evaluate NfL and HDL interactions, adjusting for demographics. Sensitivity …

Cervical cancer is preventable; however, it remains the leading cause of death in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Women with HIV (WWHs) have a sixfold higher risk of developing and dying from cervical cancer than women without HIV. Cervical cancer can be prevented by vaccination against high-risk human papillomaviruses (hrHPVs) and by screening for and treating precancer cervical lesions. While these preventive measures are routinely available to WWHs in developed countries, they are lacking in most LMICs, where the burden of HIV and cervical cancer is the highest. To prevent cervical cancer deaths among WWHs in LMICs, it is imperative …

Intramedullary nail fixation is the "gold standard" for surgical intervention of femoral fractures. While many aspects of nail design and patient anatomy have received specific focus, anatomic variations in proximal femoral geometry and greater trochanteric height variation have been poorly studied. Understanding the potential relationship of the greater trochanter to patient demographics may provide an opportunity to improve implant placement. Retrospective review of x-ray and computed tomography images of the proximal femur was performed. Inclusion criteria consisted of skeletally mature patients over 18 years old with imaging of the proximal femur. Inclusion criteria identified 296 patients. Mean age of included …

Machine Learning Applications In Epigenomics And Its Association With Health And Disease, Trevor Doherty
Machine Learning Applications In Epigenomics And Its Association With Health And Disease, Trevor Doherty
Doctoral
Epigenetic modifications can lead to altered phenotypes without a change in the DNA sequence itself. Disrupted gene expression regulated by epigenetic processes can result in cancers, autoimmune diseases and various other maladies. Machine learning (ML) involves the use of algorithms and models which are trained to learn patterns in data, and has demonstrated remarkable success in solving diverse, complex challenges. Epigenomic studies, such as those that use DNA methylation (DNAm) data, increasingly make use of ML techniques to process extremely high dimensional data obtained from high throughput platforms e.g., DNAm arrays. These datasets suffer from the curse of dimensionality, increased …

The Detection Of Multiple Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Types Through The Development Of An Isothermal Dna Amplification Assay, Lauren Powell
Doctoral
Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) belong to the Papillomaviridae family, with over 200 known types classified into high-risk (HR-HPV) and low-risk (LR-HPV) groups based on their carcinogenic potential. While most HPV infections are asymptomatic and transient, persistent infection can lead to health issues, including cervical cancer. Given the high prevalence of HPV and its potential for malignant transformation, nucleic acid amplification assays have become a widely implemented tool for routine HPV testing. This study developed a real-time isothermal DNA amplification assay for the detection and differentiation of multiple HPV types. A universal primer set was designed to target a highly conserved region …

This research focuses on enhancing the value of coffee waste by converting it into activated carbon for removing Pb²⁺ ions from contaminated water. Coffee grounds were activated with KOH and carbonized at 600°C for 4 h to produce activated carbon (CGAC), then modified with arginine via hydrothermal treatment at 120°C for 48 h to create Arg-CGAC. The adsorbents' chemical and physical properties were analyzed using SEM, FT-IR, BET, and pHpzc methods. Batch experiments revealed that Arg-CGAC exhibited superior Pb2+ adsorption (223.10 mg∙g‒1) compared to CGAC (119.23 mg∙g‒1) under optimal conditions. Isotherm analysis showed stronger adsorbate-adsorbent interactions and a more endothermic …

In this work, the influence of hydroxyapatite (HA) addition to the calcium/zirconium-doped barium titanate (BCZT) piezoceramic was investigated to evaluate its potential for bone-repair applications. The relationship between the physical, electrical, and biological properties of the (100-x)BCZT-(x)HA composite was observed via various techniques. The HA powder was synthesized via precipitation method, whereas the BCZT powder was produced by solid-state reaction to prepare the (100-x)BCZT-(x)HA composites, where x = 0 wt% to 50 wt%. The results showed that the dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of the (100-x)BCZT-(x)HA composites decreased dramatically as introducing HA into BCZT due to the occurrence of secondary …

Fused Deposition Modeling is 3D printing techniques which chiefly appreciated for prototypes. This manufacturing process works by extrusion of thermoplastic materials to make the three-dimensional objects. In this work, we pursued to identify the FDM parameters to increase mechanical properties, specifically ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and compressive strength (CMS). Polycarbonate was chosen to create the test samples because of the best thermal and mechanical properties, which was the increasing manufacturing applications of 3D printing. Nine experiments were conducted to verify the interaction of the considered parameters, namely infill rate (IR), printing speed (PS), and film height (FH). The combined use …

This study proposes a hydrometallurgical approach to valorising industrial waste by producing SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) from waste solder dross obtained by skimming off of tin solder baths from electronic dipping processes. The process involves leaching the dross with aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and hydrogen peroxide, followed by precipitation with ammonium hydroxide and purification with aqueous nitric acid solution. The optimised leaching conditions were determined to be 4 mol∙ L‒1 HCl, 11% v/v H2O2, 25℃, and a leaching time of 15 min. SnO2 NPs were successfully precipitated at pH 4 using 25% v/v NH4OH and purified with 1 mol∙ L‒1 HNO3. …
