As awareness of environmental issues deepens and the demand for sustainability grows among societies, businesses, and consumers, minimizing the environmental impact of food packaging has become increasingly important. Bioplastics offer a promising solution due to their use of renewable resources (such as plants), their biodegradability, and their ability to retain the protective properties of traditional plastics. This review discusses recent advancements and trends in sustainable food packaging, emphasizing the role of bioplastics. Several typical types of bioplastics are introduced, along with an analysis of their advantages and limitations. Furthermore, this study investigates consumers' attitudes toward bioplastic food packaging, emphasizing their …
The Nurturing Father: The Role Of Fathers' Masculine Ideology, Caregiving Beliefs, And Reflective Functioning, William Girard Katzman
The Nurturing Father: The Role Of Fathers' Masculine Ideology, Caregiving Beliefs, And Reflective Functioning, William Girard Katzman
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Prior research has documented the effects of traditional masculine ideologies (TMI) on men’s restrictive emotionality (Levant, 2011), labeled as normative male alexithymia (Levant et al., 2006). For men who become fathers, research has noted how the rejection of TMI increases fathers’ nurturing role beliefs and the frequency that children turn to their fathers for emotional support, but these findings do not outline the quality of fathers’ emotional support (Petts al., 2018; Shafer et al., 2019). Therefore, the current project examined the effects of TMI on 281 fathers’ capacity to respond to their children’s negative emotions with Expressive Encouragement (EE), which …
Biomedical Applications Of Reactive Oxygen Species From Catechol Oxidation, Zhongtian Zhang
Biomedical Applications Of Reactive Oxygen Species From Catechol Oxidation, Zhongtian Zhang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Catechol, a key functional moiety found in mussel adhesive proteins, undergoes oxidation to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can be leveraged for biomedical and environmental applications. By modifying catechol-based polymers, ROS generation can be controlled and applied toward organic compound degradation, antimicrobial treatments, and polymer crosslinking. This dissertation focuses on the design and application of catechol-based materials that leverage ROS generation for biomedical and environmental applications.
Microwave Assisted Syntheses And Characterizations Of Near-Infrared Ratiometric Probes For Mitochondrial Ph Detection And Monitoring, Ronald J. Schwandt
Microwave Assisted Syntheses And Characterizations Of Near-Infrared Ratiometric Probes For Mitochondrial Ph Detection And Monitoring, Ronald J. Schwandt
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Within the field of biochemistry, there has been a significant development of ratiometric fluorescent probes designed for mitochondrial pH detection; however, many of these probes have emissions within the visible spectrum and require long synthesis times with low-yield reactions. However, in recent years, microwave-assisted syntheses of organic molecules have led to significant increases in reaction yields and quicker reaction times. In this work, two common reactions in probe synthesis, Heck coupling, and Knoevenagel condensations are investigated using microwave-assisted synthesis. It was found the low-concentration Heck coupling reactions using palladium (II) acetate led to extremely efficient Heck coupling. Also, a novel …
Small Mammal Diet As An Indicator Of Lyme Disease And The Road To Endemicity In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Jacqueline E. Suits
Small Mammal Diet As An Indicator Of Lyme Disease And The Road To Endemicity In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Jacqueline E. Suits
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Lyme disease is expanding in the Upper Midwest due to climate change, forest degradation, and shifting wildlife communities. Small mammals are key reservoir hosts, and their foraging behavior offers insight into environmental conditions that sustain pathogen transmission. We used DNA metabarcoding to investigate small mammal diets across seasonal, spatial, and infection gradients in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We identified dominant dietary plant and arthropod taxa, seasonal shifts, and slight variation by species, site, and Lyme infection status. Taxa associated with Lyme-positive individuals were primarily linked to moist, edge, and disturbed habitats, areas that also support ticks and disease spread. These results …

Microbial Hydrocarbon Degradation And Carbon Cycling In Marine And Freshwater Sediments: A Comparative Metagenomic Analysis, Yogita M. Warkhade
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Microbes are essential in keeping our environment balanced, especially by fixing carbon dioxide and breaking down hydrocarbons in aquatic sediments. This thesis explores how microbial communities perform these tasks in different sediment environments, including marine areas (Caspian Sea and Mediterranean Sea) and freshwater ecosystems (Great Lakes). The first part of this thesis reviews current knowledge about how microbes degrade hydrocarbons. It highlights the importance of different pathways microbes use depending on oxygen availability. The second part provides a detailed study of the microbial communities found in marine sediments from the Caspian Sea and Mediterranean Sea, showing that microbes in these …
Rotten Through The Cores: What Decomposition Can Tell Us About Carbon Cycling, Eileen C. Reeves
Rotten Through The Cores: What Decomposition Can Tell Us About Carbon Cycling, Eileen C. Reeves
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Sequestration of carbon (C) in forests means that the C is stored in the ecosystem and not emitted to the atmosphere, thus slowing the accumulation of greenhouse gases and mitigating the acceleration of manmade climate change. Quantifying the pools and fluxes of C in forests is therefore of considerable interest to landowners, policy makers, and scientists.
Decomposition is an ecological process central to the movement of C through ecosystems. This dissertation uses several techniques to help determine the factors influencing the speed of decomposition and long-term fate of decomposed plant material. In Chapter Two, phospholipid fatty acid analysis was used …
Dam It All: A Multi-Scalar Investigation Into The Ecological Role And Function Of Beaver Dams, Kenneth Larsen
Dam It All: A Multi-Scalar Investigation Into The Ecological Role And Function Of Beaver Dams, Kenneth Larsen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The central theme of this dissertation is ecological scaling, which examines how small, localized features, such as beaver ponds, contribute to large-scale watershed processes and how different modeling approaches at various scales reveal distinct insights. Through a combination of probabilistic modeling and high-resolution empirical research, this work demonstrates that small ponded systems, particularly those created by beavers (Castor canadensis), serve as critical biogeochemical control points, whose contributions to sediment and nutrient dynamics have been historically underestimated.
In Chapter 1, I contextualize this research within the broader fields of freshwater ecology, watershed modeling, and ecological restoration. I introduce the …
Examining The Role Of Plant Genome Size And Polyploidy In Shaping Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Symbioses, Abbigail J. Blackwell
Examining The Role Of Plant Genome Size And Polyploidy In Shaping Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Symbioses, Abbigail J. Blackwell
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Polyploid and larger genome size plants have been shown to contain more cellular nitrogen and phosphorus than related diploid and smaller genome size plants, indicating they have greater nutrient requirements. Given that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associations can enhance plant nutrient acquisition, polyploid and larger genome size plants may form more associations with AMF to meet their increased nutrient demands and gain greater benefits from these symbioses. However, because AMF associations become unnecessary when nutrient-rich soils meet plant needs independently, these interactions may be more likely to occur under nutrient-poor conditions. For this research, we conducted two experiments to examine …
Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography: Development Of Tissue Models And Investigation Of Shear Wave Variability, Emily J. Miller
Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography: Development Of Tissue Models And Investigation Of Shear Wave Variability, Emily J. Miller
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Ultrasound shear wave elastography (USWE) is an evolving and promising clinical tool for noninvasively measuring in vivo soft tissue biomechanical properties. Assumptions incorporated into the clinical workflow and technical limitations have created gaps between theoretical and clinically derived solutions. The heterogeneity of the fibrotic liver tissue, composition of the background, such as the presence of fatty liver tissue, and the preferred local orientation of the scarred fibrotic liver tissues embedded into the liver parenchyma, may contribute to the uncertainty in USWE measurements. This study aims to systematically investigate four cofounding factors (i.e., size, volume fraction, orientation of the fibrotic inclusions, …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Enzymes catalyze complex biological transformations. Non-heme Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG)–dependent enzymes are highly versatile catalysts capable of selective C–H oxidation, enabling transformations such as hydroxylation, halogenation, desaturation, demethylation, ring rearrangements, epoxidation, and electrophilic aromatic substitution. These enzymes are involved in various biological processes, including fatty acid metabolism, hypoxic signaling, collagen maturation, and transcriptional regulation. Computational Modeling provides detailed knowledge of the enzymes including atomistic details of the important catalytic species, conformational and electronic effects, which are crucial to enzyme engineering and drug design efforts. This dissertation implements advanced multi-scale molecular modelling techniques including Molecular dynamics and Quantum Mechanic / Molecular Mechanics calculations …

Background. Seagrass meadows are ecologically significant habitats that are globally threatened. Thus, there is increased interest in conservation of seagrasses as they face widespread decline. Biotic and abiotic factors that influence seagrass can be classified as stressors, such as rising temperature and eutrophication. Our study met an imminent need to consolidate data from previous studies to discern knowledge gaps and identify trends in studies, stressors, species, and geographic origination of research for the genus Zostera. For our systematic review, the objectives were to (A) qualitatively assess and summarize the current state of literature focused on seagrass species within the Zostera …

Assessing The Impact Of Shifting To Non- Combusted Alternatives To Reduce The Economic Cost Of Tobacco-Related Illnesses: A Cost Of Illness Approach In The Philippine Case, Christopher James Cabuay
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Smoking continues to be one of the leading causes of death and disability around the world. Recent health studies, however, have reported that these diseases are more likely to be due to the smoke from burning rather than the actual nicotine content. This study uses a cost-of-illness approach in estimating the cost of smoking-related illness in the Philippines and calculating the potential reduction in costs if a significant portion of the adult smoking population switches to the exclusive use of non-combusted alternatives (NCAs), which drastically reduces the risk of contracting smoking-related diseases. This study finds that cost reductions in the …

The Curiously Minor Role Of Minor V. Happersett (Foreword), Susan Frelich Appleton, Travis Crum, Hannah Keidan
The Curiously Minor Role Of Minor V. Happersett (Foreword), Susan Frelich Appleton, Travis Crum, Hannah Keidan
Scholarship@WashULaw
This Foreword introduces a symposium marking the 150th anniversary of Minor v. Happersett, a Supreme Court decision unanimously holding that the Fourteenth Amendment's Privileges or Immunities Clause did not enfranchise women. Notwithstanding its impact on the women's suffrage movement and the subsequent ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, Minor presents a puzzle: it is a relatively obscure precedent that remains deeply relevant to contemporary legal debates. To elucidate this point, this Foreword juxtaposes Minor with two notorious Supreme Court decisions: Dred Scott and Dobbs.
Like Dred Scott, Minor pairs a morally repugnant result with legalistic reasoning. But whereas …

Lessons Learned From The Trump Rule Of Law Stress Test: Beware Bad Faith Actors, Brian Z. Tamanaha
Scholarship@WashULaw
The second Trump Administration has engaged in a vast swath of actions that press against the outer boundaries of legality. These actions provide a unique opportunity to identify potential vulnerabilities and expose how the rule of law can be undermined. While I will elucidate well-known points along the way, my primary aim is to bring out aspects of the rule of law that usually go unnoticed or under the radar. After setting out basic aspects of the rule of law, I cover three topics: 1) adhering to the truth, 2) pretextual arguments, and 3) flooding the field with actions and …

Meteorology, Weather And War In South East Asia: Malaya C. 1940-1960, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article interrogates the positioning of British colonial meteorology in Malaysia and Singapore from the 1940s to 1960. This period spanned a global conflict and an internecine war, effecting profound sociopolitical changes from which neither Malaysia nor Singapore would emerge the same. The meteorological services were essential to Britain's armed conflicts, providing vital weather information to the army, navy and, especially, the air forces, as well as supporting the aviation and shipping industry often in difficult and dangerous circumstances. This article argues that British military policy in South East Asia and the specific concerns of the colonial government in Malaya …
Nature, Nurture, And Serial Murder: A Biocriminological Analysis Of Jeffrey Dahmer And Aileen Wuornos, Dori W. Jal
Nature, Nurture, And Serial Murder: A Biocriminological Analysis Of Jeffrey Dahmer And Aileen Wuornos, Dori W. Jal
Honors Thesis
In recent years, there has been an increase in public fascination with serial killers, however current criminological explanations continue to focus on social and psychological factors, lacking commentary on potential biological implications. This thesis addresses a gap in the literature by examining how biological processes, specifically epigenetic, neurobiological, and endocrinological mechanisms, interact with environmental stressors to shape serial homicidal behavior. The goal is to determine whether serial murder can be more effectively understood through a biosocial framework that integrates biological vulnerability with lived experience, rather than relying on singular explanatory models.
Using a qualitative multiple-case study methodology, this research analyzes …
Seeds In A Pluriverse: Visakha Society For The Protection And Care Of Animals Inclusive Praxis Toward Self-Determined Just Socio-Ecological Territories, Priya Tallam
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
My dissertation focuses on my thesis question: How might an NGO’s grassroots efforts in urban Visakhapatnam, India, propagate living justly with animals we encounter and severely Othered humans, beyond attitudes of guardianship, mitigating universalized harms to nature and society? In a transdisciplinary approach examining grassroots programs, my phenomenological study breaks down an animal advocate’s assertive practices of—inclusivity and decolonialized lived norms, which persistently transcend cultural antagonisms of caste, ability, gender, sex, class, and form/species—toward creating just pluriversal multispecies communities in Visakhapatnam. Universalized urbanization across the planet has driven irreversible socio-ecological transformation marked by record ecosystem decline. Sustaining the urban via …
Shades Of Discipline: A Narrative Inquiry Exploring Black Girls’ Experiences Of Colorism And Exclusionary Discipline Through The Lens Of The Domains Of Power, Tamika Reese
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Black girls are the fastest-growing group facing exclusionary school discipline, including suspensions, expulsions, and law enforcement referrals. National data reveals that Black girls are significantly more likely to be suspended than white girls, yet little research has explored how skin tone influences these disparities. This qualitative narrative inquiry examined the role of colorism in the discipline of Black girls by expanding on Patricia Hill Collins’s Matrix of Domination framework. Through the voices of five Black girls with varying skin tones and eight school leaders involved in disciplinary decisions, the study explored how the intersections of race, gender, and skin tone …
