Previous linguistic research has noted the remarkable ability of LGBTQ speakers to tailor their identity expression contextually based on the perceived safety of their context: studies of queer style-shifting have contrasted this group’s behavior in queer-friendly contexts with their speech in socially conservative ones. However, the patterns identified by this research do not account for the behaviors of outspokenly conservative queer people whose political ‘safe spaces’ are unaccepting of their queer identity. Background: Gain-of-function TP53 mutations have previously been shown to induce chromosomal instability (CIN) in cancer cells, triggering the cGAS-STING innate immune response and subsequently activating the non-canonical NF-κB (NC-NF-κB) signaling pathway. This signaling cascade promotes cancer cell metastasis and an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), significantly impacting tumor development and progression. However, the precise downstream mechanisms by which the mutp53-CIN-cGAS-STING-NC-NF-κB signaling pathway facilitates tumor development and progression remain poorly understood. Here, our objective was to identify direct downstream targets of mutp53-CIN-cGAS-STING-induced NC-NF-κB signaling that potentially impact the TME to promote the development and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

This thesis investigates the detention of HIV-positive Haitian refugees at Guantánamo Bay in the early 1990s as a case study of medicalized racism and U.S. imperialism. It explores how U.S. public health policy, immigration law, and Cold War-era foreign interventions converged to criminalize and confine Black Haitian bodies, constructing them as threats to national security and public health. This exploratory study provides an initial assessment of how particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) associated with smoke pollution from the 2017 California wildfire season, in conjunction with precipitation and habitat type, influences the body condition of four resident bird species during the 2018 breeding season. This study explores the vulnerability of migrant workers returning to Bangladesh through the lens of van Houte and Davids’ (2008) embeddedness framework. Centering women’s narratives offers a feminist method of embeddedness, focusing on the economic, social, and psychosocial dimensions of returning migrants’ experiences. This paper addresses the vulnerabilities experienced by women upon their return, particularly those returning from the Middle East. Drawing on qualitative data from in-depth interviews with 30 Bangladeshi women domestic workers, this study identifies two primary causes for their return from the Middle East to Bangladesh: coercion by family members and coercion by employers. Biological aging unfolds along multiple heterogeneous trajectories shaped by both acquired molecular drift and inherited genetic variation. This dissertation investigates two complementary axes of aging heterogeneity: (1) stochastic, individually acquired epigenomic deviations; and (2) genotype-defined risk exemplified by the APOEε4 allele, the strongest genetic determinant of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair up, and separate in anaphase I, with two chromatids moving toward each pole. In meiosis II, the sister chromatids move to opposite poles during anaphase II and produce haploid cells. Factor XI (FXI) deficiency, also known as Hemophilia C, is characterized by mild to moderate bleeding symptoms. However, the factors that modify bleeding severity in FXI deficiency are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated whether components of the contact activation pathway can act as modifiers of bleeding in the context of FXI deficiency. Using a tail vein transection (TVT) model in rats, we assessed bleeding in four experimental groups: wild-type Sprague-Dawley rats, Prekallikrein knockout (PKK^-/-) rats, rats treated with a FXI-inhibiting antibody, and PKK-/- rats treated with the FXI antibody.

This project will aim to identify ribbon outputs and post-synaptic partners of type 7 bipolar cells in a mouse retina. Using the software WebKnossos, a three-dimensional skeleton of three to four type 7 bipolar cells will be traced. Ribbon synapses will then be located along the cells' axon terminals, and the types of cells that are receiving the synaptic output will be identified. The goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of how type 7 bipolar cells interact with other neurons in the inner plexiform layer (IPL) of the retina.
