Geometric Modeling, Reconstruction And Evaluation Of Maize Leaf Morphology In 3d, Zhaocheng Xiang Jan 2025

Geometric Modeling, Reconstruction And Evaluation Of Maize Leaf Morphology In 3d, Zhaocheng Xiang

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Maize is a vital crop for global food security, yet quantitative characterization of its three-dimensional (3D) morphology remains a major challenge due to the geometric complexity of curved leaf structures and occlusions during data collection. This work presents an integrated framework for the digital reconstruction, parametric modeling, and functional analysis of maize leaf morphology and canopy architecture, advancing the precision and interpretability of phenotyping and modeling in smart agriculture.

First, we propose a descriptive and parametric model that represents maize leaves through three fundamental components: midrib, cross-section, and blade contour. Each is described by geometric curves and controlled by biologically …

Assessing Reproductive Health In Zoo-Managed African Elephant Bulls (Loxodonta Africana), Kaitlyn Marie Campbell

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Populations of zoo-managed African elephant (Loxodonta Africana) exhibit substantial individual- and population-level variation in reproductive success, yet research has largely focused on females, leaving male fertility poorly understood. Subfertility in bulls, characterized by low libido and inconsistent semen quality, poses significant challenges to genetic management and long-term population sustainability. This study a) systematically evaluates semen quality, b) identifies physiological, behavioral, social, and environmental determinants of fertility, and c) advances ex situ conservation through the expansion of the African elephant sperm bank. Between January 2023 and July 2025, 209 semen collection events were conducted from 13 sexually mature bulls …

Leaf-Based Varietal Categorization Of Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas L. Lam.), A Potentially Healthful Vegetable, Using Image Processing And K-Means Clustering, Shahidul Islam, Md Towfiqur Rahman, Md Hamidul Rahman, Abdul Momin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas Lam) leaves contain higher concentrations of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and carotenoids that are remarkable in health promotion. However, the nutrient content in sweetpotato leaves varies from variety to variety, and leaf shape and color are the key identifying factors for the varietal classification of sweetpotatoes. So, detecting sweetpotato leaves is essential for the in-situ identification of sweetpotato varieties and for developing intelligent agricultural systems. This study aimed to create a leaf-shape-based varietal classification technique for sweetpotato using image processing techniques coupled with a K-means clustering algorithm. 38 leaf images (RGB) of two sweetpotato cultivars were collected …

In-Season Nitrogen Mmanagement: Leveraging Data Visualization For Precision Agriculture, Chathurika Harshani Narayana Jan 2025

In-Season Nitrogen Mmanagement: Leveraging Data Visualization For Precision Agriculture, Chathurika Harshani Narayana

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Effective nitrogen management is vital for sustainable agriculture, impacting both crop yield and environmental health. Traditional methods often use fixed application rates set before planting, which do not adapt to changing crop needs during the season. This can lead to over- or under-application, reducing efficiency and sustainability. While modern tools like sensors, satellites, and UAVs provide valuable real-time data on crop and field conditions, integrating and using this data to guide timely nitrogen decisions remains a major challenge. In-season nitrogen management offers a solution by allowing for dynamic adjustments to nitrogen applications, addressing crop needs as they arise. This approach …

Ber Anena’S Vagina Diaries, A Review: An African Student’S Encounter With The American Health System, Akua Agyeiwaa Denkyi-Manieson

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This work delves into the disappointment, indifference, and pretense experienced by the narrator when she sorts the American healthcare system. It also addresses the struggles immigrants face, particularly from Africa, as they navigate a healthcare system that often requires them to prove their pain and worthiness of attention. The narrative emphasizes the importance of not generalizing the entire healthcare system based on a single negative experience while acknowledging the profound impact on one's perception of the system. Furthermore, it explores the paradox between the availability of better resources in America compared to the narrator's home country and the mistreatment and …

Personalized Versus Fixed Tactile Cueing In Parkinson’S Disease: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial On Gait Automaticity, Pablo Burgos Jan 2025

Personalized Versus Fixed Tactile Cueing In Parkinson’S Disease: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial On Gait Automaticity, Pablo Burgos

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Background

Gait automaticity, the ability of the brain to control locomotion with minimal use of executive-attentional resources, is altered in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recently, we showed that step-synchronized tactile cueing improved gait regularity and freezing of gait in PD; however, it is not known if this cueing mode also improves gait automaticity. Thus, this study investigates the effects of step-synchronized tactile cueing (versus fixed cueing) on gait automaticity in the laboratory and during daily life.

Methods

This is a pilot, randomized, double-blinded study where sixty participants with PD will be randomized into one of two, cueing interventions: 1) …

A Historic Case Of Relapsing-Remitting Alzheimer's Disease In An Adolescent Attributed To Scarlet Fever., Richard Lathe, Brian J. Balin

PCOM Scholarly Works

We draw attention to a historic case of a boy who suffered from scarlet fever (typically caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes) at age 7 years and went on to develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). His physicians believed that the subsequent dementia was related to the infection. After death at 24 years of age, postmortem brain examination revealed abundant AD-type senile plaques and fibrils, formally confirming AD. Other potential causes of early-onset dementia are discussed, but these are distinct from patient E.H. This case is pertinent regarding the current debate about the potential role of infection in …

Strategic Identification Of Prognostic Biomarkers For Knee Osteoarthritis Via Optimized Regression Techniques, Varun Sri Sai Vemuri Jan 2025

Strategic Identification Of Prognostic Biomarkers For Knee Osteoarthritis Via Optimized Regression Techniques, Varun Sri Sai Vemuri

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive musculoskeletal disease involving cartilage matrix degradation, subchondral bone remodeling, and systemic inflammation, significantly impairing joint function and mobility. Existing KOA prediction models are not designed to account for nonlinear multimodal biomarker interactions or to integrate biochemical and imaging data, thus limiting their clinical utility. The current method for early detection and prediction of KOA disease progression is primarily based on machine learning-based approaches using radiographic imaging data, static feature selection, and deterministic outputs. These machine learning approaches often fail to capture the pathophysiology of KOA disease progression, which involves a complex cascade of processes, …

Animals face the risk of encountering pathogenic microbes while foraging for resources. Assessing the risk of nutrition vs. infection can result in the behavioral regulation of immune processes. Behavioral immunity in the nematode roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is regulated, in part, by the innate immune molecule TOL-1: a homolog of vertebrate Toll-like Receptor (TLR) proteins that influences C. elegans pathogen avoidance behaviors by promoting the development of CO2-detecting chemosensory neurons. While TOL-1′s role in pathogen avoidance is well established, its role in an opposing behavior – foraging – has not been examined. In addition to pathogenic bacteria, preferred food …

There exists a consistent partisan gap in preferences for public spending on the environment, with approval being 20 to 40 percentage points higher for Democrats than Republicans. In this paper, we investigate whether there is a similar partisan gap present in residential preferences for environmental amenities. We link housing data, land use, and household characteristics, including voter registration, for three distinct housing markets, and we develop a residential sorting model to estimate marginal willingness-to-pay (MWTP) for residential proximity to conserved land, allowing for preference heterogeneity by partisanship as well as other household characteristics. For all households combined, we estimate average …

Dissertations DIS

The presence of Seventh-day Adventists in Suriname dates to 1894, but there is no evidence, either in literature or field research, of any specific plan or missional thinking focused on the Adventist mission among East Indian Muslims in Suriname. The field research highlights some significant missiological challenges faced by the Seventh-day Adventist mission in Suriname that account for its slow numerical growth. These missiological challenges include: (1) a lack of committed and dedicated indigenous leaders; (2) inappropriate training given to the indigenous people for the mission in Suriname's multicultural and multilingual dynamics; (3) unsuitable missional methods for Suriname’s multicultural and …

Microbial Mavericks: Turning Hazards Into Snacks, Alison G. Blanton Jan 2025

Microbial Mavericks: Turning Hazards Into Snacks, Alison G. Blanton

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Symbiotic associations with microbes are widespread across life and provide hosts with essential and beneficial functions. A growing concern in pest management is symbiont-mediated detoxification (SMD), a form of metabolic resistance to insecticides. The best-known example of SMD involves the bean bug Riptortus pedestris, where an environmentally acquired but obligate Caballeronia symbiont confers resistance to the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion. Motivated by this model, I began my work in another known bug-Caballeronia symbiosis: Leptoglossus phyllopus, native to the United States. I then expanded the study to include two additional U.S.-native hosts, Leptoglossus zonatus and Anasa tristis. Representative …

Interspecific Interactions And Resource Availability As Drivers Of Species Occurrences, Edita Folfas Jan 2025

Interspecific Interactions And Resource Availability As Drivers Of Species Occurrences, Edita Folfas

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Understanding what forces determine species occurrence is central to studies of community ecology. Species interact with each other and their environment, and these interactions scale up to shape global patterns of diversity. In my first chapter, I examined how predation might shape patterns of Anolis lizard species richness and abundance across landscapes on islands in the Greater Antilles. I quantified predatory bird occurrence by using thousands of observations from an online citizen science database (eBird). I then obtained estimates of anole abundance and diversity by conducting local field surveys and using mark-resight methods. While predators could negatively impact anole abundance …

Comparative Effectiveness Of Conservative Versus Early Surgical Treatments On Wound Healing Outcomes Of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Literature Review, Paul Tran, Yasim Zafar, Andrea Piña, Stephanie N. Campbell

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a severe complication of diabetes mellitus and the leading cause of lower extremity amputations worldwide. Peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease secondary to complications of diabetes mellitus may result in ulcers going unnoticed, increasing the risk of severe osteomyelitis, necrotizing infection, hospitalization, amputation, and sepsis. While conservative management of DFUs remains the first-line approach—emphasizing wound care, infection control, glycemic management, and offloading—there is growing debate about whether delaying simple surgical interventions worsens long-term outcomes. Surgeries such as tenotomy, digital amputation, and tendo-Achilles lengthening are minimally invasive options that can correct deformities, prevent recurrence, and promote …

Cognitive impairment is common in heart failure patients, contributing to morbidity and mortality. This impairment may be linked to neuroinflammation in heart failure. However, the primacy of the heart-brain axis remains to be completely understood. Here, we elucidate the potential effects of myocardial injury on pathways and inflammatory mediators responsible for cognitive impairment using a rodent myocardial injury model. The results demonstrate direct extracellular vesicle (EV)-mediated heart-brain crosstalk and the glial uptake of cardiac EVs. In addition, brain inflammation was also elicited following myocardial injury. Moreover, cardiac EVs promote brain microglial cell activation in vitro, potentially mediated by EV-enriched micro-RNAs …
