A Broad Range Of Sexual Misconduct And Associated Mental Health Outcomes, Cory Sanderson Jan 2025

A Broad Range Of Sexual Misconduct And Associated Mental Health Outcomes, Cory Sanderson

Honors Theses

College women are at a high risk of experiencing sexual misconduct (SM) (Graham et al., 2022). Research shows a connection between sexual victimization and psychological distress (Graham et al., 2022). The lack of research on a broader range of SM and associated mental health outcomes is a lacuna that must be addressed. SM is a widely understudied issue, and approximately 1 in 5 college women will experience it at least once during their time on campus (Muehlenhard et al., 2017). Women are not only at a high risk of experiencing SM during their time in college, but research shows a …

The Aussie Oddballs: Identifying The Existence Of Censer And Trample Burr Dispersal In Australian Bush Tomatoes, Abigail Motter Jan 2025

The Aussie Oddballs: Identifying The Existence Of Censer And Trample Burr Dispersal In Australian Bush Tomatoes, Abigail Motter

Honors Theses

Australian bush tomatoes in northern Western Australia likely have seed dispersal mechanisms that depend on processes outside of frugivory, which is unusual for this genus. Solanum tudununggae seeds are wind dispersed by the censer mechanism, meaning that seeds fall from holes in the top of the fruit when the branches move. In another species, piles of abscised and burr-like fruits have been found strewn around the bases of S. ossicruentum, possibly due to the extinction of animals that may have been a means of dispersal via epizoochory. In this study, we attempt to provide support for the theorized dispersal …

Reading Nietzsche As A Tool For Feminist Politics, Juliana I. Fedorko Jan 2025

Reading Nietzsche As A Tool For Feminist Politics, Juliana I. Fedorko

Honors Theses

My Honors Thesis in Political Science builds upon the scholarly tradition of reading beyond Friedrich Nietzsche’s explicit discussions of women, which are oftentimes blatantly misogynistic. As a philosopher typically included in the Western existentialist canon, Nietzsche’s ethics of self-transcendence is relevant to one of the vital feminist objectives: individual autonomy. His commentary in Beyond Good and Evil, The Gay Science, On the Genealogy of Morals, and The Use and Abuse of History for Life prescribe ways of being that disrupt traditional moral systems and their accompanying social conditioning. If we examine patriarchy as one of these value …

On Linear Invariants Of Hypergraphs, Clara Chaplin Jan 2025

On Linear Invariants Of Hypergraphs, Clara Chaplin

Honors Theses

We introduce linear invariants of hypergraphs as a way to study hypergraphs by their tensor representations. Our primary research goal is to determine what information linear invariants capture about the hypergraphs they arise from. We first investigate the centroid, which is shown to determine the connected components of a hypergraph. Next, we study the derivations of a hypergraph, and use this linear invariant to define a quotient operator $Q_\mathrm{Der}$ on the collection of all hypergraphs. This operator is shown to be a closure operator in that $Q_\mathrm{Der}(Q_\mathrm{Der}(\mathcal{H}))=Q_\mathrm{Der}(\mathcal{H})$ for any hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$. We apply the operator $Q_\mathrm{Der}$ to synthetically generated hypergraphs, …

A Phenomenological Approach To Addiction, Zollie Foss Jan 2025

A Phenomenological Approach To Addiction, Zollie Foss

Honors Theses

This paper proposes a phenomenological investigation of addiction, with the goal of describing how it is experienced from within, as an embodied and existential phenomenon. I begin by establishing a conceptual framework—drawn from the works of existential phenomenologists Heidegger, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty—outlining the key structures of everyday experience such as being-in-the-world, freedom, embodiment, bad faith, and sedimentation. I then turn to a description of the lived experience of addiction by drawing on various first-person addiction memoirs, showing how the aforementioned existential structures are experienced in active addiction and how pathways to sobriety reflect and are experienced as targeting these structures. …

Breaking The Boundaries Of The Binary: Non-Normative Gender Expression And Rebellion In 19th-Century Literature, Anna Marie Wingard Jan 2025

Breaking The Boundaries Of The Binary: Non-Normative Gender Expression And Rebellion In 19th-Century Literature, Anna Marie Wingard

Honors Theses

This thesis explores non-normative expressions of gender in three nineteenth-century novels: Valperga (1823) by Mary Shelley, The Hermaphrodite (c. 1846) by Julia Ward Howe, and The Awakening (1999) by Kate Chopin. Each novel’s protagonist displays gender expression that rejects nineteenth-century British and American ideals and is consequently exiled from society and faces death. The project diagrams trajectories of gender expression and identity by tracing adherence, failure, and consequences to illustrate how non-normative gender expression directly leads to social exclusion and death. The findings of this literary analysis suggest that nineteenth-century understandings of gender were rigidly policed and the novel served …

Investigating The Mechanisms Of Freeze Tolerance In Lemna Minor, Tamara Bouchard Jan 2025

Investigating The Mechanisms Of Freeze Tolerance In Lemna Minor, Tamara Bouchard

Honors Theses and Capstones

Freezing presents a significant abiotic stress to aquatic plants, yet little is known about the mechanisms by which species like Lemna minor (duckweed) survive subzero temperatures in nature. This study investigates whether L. minor employs freeze-avoidance or freeze-tolerance strategies and explores the potential role of its microbiome in enhancing cold resilience. Using both field-collected fronds from naturally frozen ponds and controlled freezing experiments in the lab, I assessed survival through viability staining and post-thaw survival. Results showed that L. minor can survive natural ice encasement and that prior cold acclimation significantly improves tissue survival under induced freezing. Trypan blue staining …

Backyard Chimeric Microbiomes: K-12 Participatory Science, Abigail Saucier Jan 2025

Backyard Chimeric Microbiomes: K-12 Participatory Science, Abigail Saucier

Honors Theses and Capstones

The US education system has seen a recent push for more secondary school curriculum to include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) materials and activities. Middle and high school is a pivotal time when academic and personal experiences affect the development of student attitudes towards STEM (Christensen et al., 2015; Moreno et al., 2016). Teachers often utilize hands-on activities to promote student engagement with science curriculum (Brooks & Poles, 2021; Christensen et al., 2015). Hands-on activities improve student learning, but impacts vary by type of activity. When students work towards a known outcome they can feel disconnected from the work …

The North American Gap Ungulates Must Migrate Physically And Legally: Elk As A Case Study, Alex Wendlandt Jan 2025

The North American Gap Ungulates Must Migrate Physically And Legally: Elk As A Case Study, Alex Wendlandt

Wyoming Law Review

Humans have tracked elk hoof prints in North America since ancient times, recognizing the significance of these migratory ungulates in culture, mythology, dietary value, and utility. As migratory ungulates, elk respond to changes in their environment by migrating to and from their summer and winter ranges. Today, elk migrations continue across the jurisdictional boundary of the northern United States and southern Canada, spreading ecological and economic benefits with each track they make. Unfortunately, ungulate migration is an “endangered phenomenon” due to loss of connectivity and loss of habitat. While the United States and Canada have acknowledged the importance of, and …

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan Jan 2025

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research examined the effect of victim gender and rape myth acceptance (RMA) on perceptions of victim credibility; however, little attention has been given to the impact of victim race and mental health history, and even fewer studies have explored the intersection of these two identities. The primary purpose of the current study was to identify factors affecting understanding of perceived credibility of victims of sexual assault, specifically in terms of victim race and mental health history. The study also examined the role of RMA on perceptions of credibility and explored participant attitudes related to color-blind racial attitudes and mental …

A Finite Difference Analysis Of Electroosmotic Flow Of A Two-Layer Jeffrey Fluid In A Vertical Porous Nanochannel, Y. Abdelmaboud, M. A. Elkot, Sara Abdelsalam

Basic Science Engineering

In this paper, we discuss the unsteady two-layer electroosmotic flow (EOF) of the Jeffrey fluid in a vertical porous nanochannel, taking into account the effect of the heat transfer and alternating current (AC) electric fields. In this model, the two layers have different densities and viscosities. The finite difference method is used to solve the governing equations of electrical potential, velocity, and temperature. The results show that the Debye-Hückel parameter is significant in managing electroosmotic flow (EOF) because it affects the electrical double layer (EDL) compression and velocity gradients on the wall. The higher the radiation parameter, the lower the …

Impacts Of Southern Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus Frontalis Zimmerman) On Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Canopy And Water Use In The Homochitto National Forest, Mississippi, Usa, Sasha Goodnow, Yun Yang, Hui Liu, Ashley Schulz

Endeavors: Mississippi State Undergraduate Research Journal

Abiotic and biotic forest disturbances can have many impacts to forest ecosystem services, including to forest water use. Studies on impacts to forest evapotranspiration have been conducted on the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) in western North America, but not on the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis), which is a native pest of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata), in the southeastern United States. Stressed pine trees produce pheromones that attract southern pine beetles and, with enough stressed trees, beetle populations can quickly grow to epidemic levels and attack healthy trees, which results in widespread tree mortality. …

Bovine Serum Albumin (Bsa) Impacts Morphology Of Fowler’S Toad (Anaxyrus Fowleri) Sperm During Short-Term Cold Storage, Jane A. Dill, Michelle K. Roy, Renato E. Naranjo, Andrew J. Kouba, Carrie K. Vance Jan 2025

Bovine Serum Albumin (Bsa) Impacts Morphology Of Fowler’S Toad (Anaxyrus Fowleri) Sperm During Short-Term Cold Storage, Jane A. Dill, Michelle K. Roy, Renato E. Naranjo, Andrew J. Kouba, Carrie K. Vance

Endeavors: Mississippi State Undergraduate Research Journal

Short-term cold storage of amphibian sperm is a valuable technique for overcoming challenges associated with asynchronous gamete release during breeding events or for transferring sperm between institutions for genetic management. Unfortunately, sperm longevity declines over time even when kept cool. Maintaining sperm form and function is critical to achieving the highest possible fertilization rates. Thus, cold storage of amphibian sperm would benefit from the addition of compounds that could extend their quality, improve fertilization and result in more offspring. One such compound is bovine serum albumin (BSA), which provides membrane stabilization, prevents lipid peroxidation of cells, protects against free radical …

Sex-Specific Roles Of The Adipocyte Mineralocorticoid Receptor In Obesity And Early Life Stress, Meghan B. Turner Jan 2025

Sex-Specific Roles Of The Adipocyte Mineralocorticoid Receptor In Obesity And Early Life Stress, Meghan B. Turner

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Obesity is a burgeoning health epidemic caused by chronic overnutrition and exacerbated by genetic, environmental and developmental factors. The adipocyte mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), a transcriptionally active nuclear receptor, is speculated to contribute to metabolic dysfunction in the obese state. MR expression is increased in obese adipose tissue, and MR modulates the expression of fat-derived hormones such as leptin and adiponectin. In women, obesity can be exacerbated by early life stress, such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Studies show that women display a positive association between cumulative ACE exposures and increased body mass index. Previously, we demonstrated that maternal separation and …

Molecular Mechanism Of Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Adhesion, Xin Huang Jan 2025

Molecular Mechanism Of Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Adhesion, Xin Huang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Bacterial biofilms are surface-attached communities of bacterial cells enclosed in an extracellular matrix formed on environmental surfaces and host tissues. Biofilm formation represents a common strategy in facilitating host colonization and infection by human pathogens, and the polymeric matrix provides a mechanism for drug and host immune resistance by acting as a barrier around biofilm-dwelling cells. Bacteria often express multiple adhesive proteins (adhesins), but it is often unclear whether adhesins have specialized or redundant roles. Here, we combine mutagenesis, biochemistry, single-cell imaging, and bioinformatics to show how Vibrio cholerae, the causal agent of pandemic cholera, uses two biofilm-specific adhesins …

Disruption Of The Rhogef Trio In Neurodevelopmental Disorders Leads To Impairments In Multiple Domains Of Function, Amanda Jeng Jan 2025

Disruption Of The Rhogef Trio In Neurodevelopmental Disorders Leads To Impairments In Multiple Domains Of Function, Amanda Jeng

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) affect the normal development and function of the brain, and include disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and epilepsy. While these are diagnostically distinct disorders, NDDs share considerable comorbidities and present with overlapping symptoms. In addition, the risk genes for NDDs overlap significantly, further suggesting shared underlying pathology of these disorders. Mutations in the gene TRIO are enriched in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. TRIO encodes a large multidomain protein with two guanine nucleotide exchange factor domains for the Rho family of small GTPases and a putative kinase domain, as well as multiple …

No Detected Signal Of The 2022 Epizootic From Multiannual Diadema Antillarum Settlement Data In The Florida Keys, Jason Albrecht Jan 2025

No Detected Signal Of The 2022 Epizootic From Multiannual Diadema Antillarum Settlement Data In The Florida Keys, Jason Albrecht

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The sea urchin Diadema antillarum is a key coral reef grazer that remains functionally extinct on many Caribbean reefs following a mass mortality event in 1983–84. In 2022, another widespread mortality event, likely caused by a scuticociliate parasite, again decimated D. antillarum at reefs across the Caribbean. Understanding the population-level impacts of this recent epizootic will be important for coral reef conservation efforts. This study examines multi-year larval settlement data from the Florida Keys to determine if the 2022 mortality event reduced larval settlement. Larval settlement was assessed monthly at three long-term monitoring sites (Delta Shoal, Tennessee Reef, and Pickles …

Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A.H. Miller Jan 2025

Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A.H. Miller

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

From cases spanning gun rights, reproductive freedom, religious liberty, and personal jurisdiction; to separation of powers and other structural features of the Constitution, courts increasingly rely on tradition to guide their decisions. Often, judges appeal to tradition in a vaguely empirical way, as “facts to study, not convictions to demonstrate about,” in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia. Yet, for a claim that purports to be factual, there’s very little agreement, or even analysis, about what renders this factual assertion—tradition—true or false. This Article tackles that foundational issue.

Part I surveys the ways in which courts use tradition in different …
