Troponin C (TnC) is the Ca²⁺-sensing subunit of troponin that is responsible for activating thin filaments in striated muscle, and, in turn, for regulating the systolic and diastolic contractile function of cardiac muscle. The secondary structure of vertebrate TnC is mainly composed of α-helices, with nine helices named sequentially, starting from the amino terminus, from N to A–H. The N-helix is a 12-residue-long α-helix located at the extreme amino terminus of the protein and is the only helical structure that does not participate in forming Ca²⁺-binding EF-hands. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have been extensively studied in sports, military, and criminal contexts, revealing significant prevalence rates and impacts on cognitive function, emotional regulation, and behavioral outcomes. However, the prevalence, patterns, and implications of TBI within law enforcement populations remain unexplored, presenting a gap in occupational health research. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) care underwent a paradigm shift in 2017 with the development of a number of targeted therapies and less-intensive treatments. This changed expectations for survival and treatment course, particularly for those who are inappropriate candidates for intensive therapy due to frailty, comorbidities or disease-specific features. Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of infection-related mortality worldwide, causing an estimated 1.13 million deaths in 2022. The majority of infections can be successfully treated with antibiotics, but the prevalence of drug-resistant TB and a lack of rapid and cost-effective drug susceptibility tests for many key antibiotics is a significant barrier to treatment. Whole-genome sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis can be used for drug susceptibility testing and can provide valuable insight into transmission patterns. In the early 1980s Diadema antillarum, or the long-spined urchin, was hit by a catastrophic mass mortality event across the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, inclusive of the Florida Keys. The cause of this die-off event was likely triggered by a pathogen or environmental stressor that decimated native populations by up to 98%. The species has not yet fully recovered and is struggling with recruitment success which is why it may benefit from an ex-situ recovery program. The alphaproteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus with a unique dimorphic lifestyle is a model organism for studying prokaryotic development. An important cellular structure is the hair-like appendage called pilus, made up of monomeric subunits called pilins. The pilus helps C. crescentus in surface sensing and attachment, leading to cellular differentiation. Despite these advantages, the C. crescentus cell expresses the pilus filament on its surface for a very short period in its life cycle, during the motile swarmer stage. This study examined the precisely-timed transcriptional regulation of the pilin-encoding gene pilA, and uncovered the impact it has on bacterial survival.

Major professional medical organizations—for example, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and Endocrine Society—consider gender-affirming care to be safe and, at times, essential for vulnerable transgender youth. Despite these benefits, 26 states have banned gender-affirming care for minors. Proponents of these bans raise concerns about potential medical harms, the irreversibility of treatments, and the adequacy of informed consent.

Every state ban includes an exception for so-called gender-normalizing surgeries, which are performed on intersex infants to conform their bodies to socially constructed expectations about the male/female binary. Academic dishonesty and how to address it are common concerns across higher education disciplines, but engineering students admit to higher rates of academic dishonesty than other students. However, first-year students may be particularly receptive to prevention efforts. Considering self-perception, social norming, and behavioral choice theories, we hypothesized that 1.) Students who perceived themself as ethical and more knowledgeable of the consequences for misconduct would be less likely to self-report cheating and 2.) Students who perceived cheating and plagiarism to be common would be more likely to self-report cheating. The hiring process is crucial for organizational success but has long been troubled by human biases. Many organizations now include AI in their hiring protocols to mitigate these biases and increase efficiency. However, AI itself can have biases baked-in. Human biases and AI biases are distinct but related; here, we examine how human and AI biases interact to affect hiring outcomes. Through an online experiment, we examine this question in the context of gendered hiring for a male-dominated leadership position in electrical engineering. Advancements in robotics and AI have increased the demand for interactive robots in healthcare and assistive applications. However, ensuring safe and effective physical human-robot interactions (pHRIs) remains challenging due to the sophistication of human motor communication and intent recognition. Traditional physics-based models struggle to capture the dynamic nature of human force interactions, limiting robot adaptability. To address these limitations, neural networks (NNs) have been explored for force-movement intention prediction. Teleoceras is a genus of rhinocerotids that belongs to the Tribe Teleoceratines and was widespread across North America from the late Early Miocene into the Early Pliocene. This genus was very successful, spreading across the continental United States from Florida and Tennessee to California and Washington state down to central Mexico and Honduras. Teleoceras is characterized by having a large, rounded chest cavity and short limbs with relatively high crowned teeth and lower incisors modified into tusk-like teeth. The tropical Wouri Estuary in Cameroon receives water and sediment inputs from three main rivers draining urban, industrial, and agricultural areas, as well as different rock terrains. This Article explores the disharmonious and disturbing influence of race in the enforcement of liquor licenses. Across the length and breadth of this nation, attentive Black revelers bear witness to an all-too-familiar trend signified by the disproportionately frequent closures of Black entertainment businesses. This Article argues that the punitive disposition toward Black entertainment businesses is not just a contemporary phenomenon; rather, it is a set of practices rooted in centuries of exclusion and regulatory abuse.

The current use of racial categorization in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) risk, limits assessment of confounders beyond cholesterol. The Life’s Essential Eight (LE8) categories of healthy diet, sleep, physical activity, smoking, body mass index, hypertension, total cholesterol, and blood glucose could reduce two million ASCVD events per year. The documentation of Z codes 55 – 65 describe social drivers of health (SDH) like housing, economics, and social systems which complicate care. Children and adolescents exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative social determinants of health (SDoH) have an increased risk of developing pediatric obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Obesity (2023) recommends assessing these factors in children with obesity. At a School-Based Health Center (SBHC), the standard of care for pediatric obesity did not include ACEs and SDoH screening, highlighting a gap in practice. This Note will provide an introduction and proscriptive application of two litigation strategies for future pipeline litigation by using the MVP [Mountain Valley Pipeline] as a case study: (1) environmental justice and (2) nature’s rights. To understand how these strategies differ from the present, Part I will first examine the primary way opponents sought to prevent construction in the case of the MVP: challenging agency findings. Then, Part II will provide context for the two proposed litigation strategies. Finally, Part III will describe possibilities for how these strategies might be employed to prevent the construction of future pipelines.
