Herbal and marine products in the form of extracts, infusions, and decoctions have been used for centuries in folk and traditional medicine. Preparations typically contain multiple biologically active compounds. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that about 65% of consumers worldwide use natural remedies containing bioactive molecules to treat various diseases [1]. Most single-molecule drugs of natural origin were developed in the middle of the 20th century through the active screening of natural products for bioactive molecules [2]. Examples include artemisinin, cyclosporine, taxol, doxorubicin, and many others. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, we saw a decline in …

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd

COBRA Preprint Series

Analysis of time-to-event (TTE) data is central to clinical research, yet conventional summary measures like the hazard ratio (HR) and restricted mean survival time (RMST) present significant challenges. The HR is often misinterpreted, and its validity depends on the frequently violated proportional hazards assumption, while the RMST is highly sensitive to the choice of time horizon. This paper introduces two novel, assumption-free estimands to address these limitations: the Highest Risk Density Region (HRDR) and the Highest Net Risk Difference Region (HNRDR).

The HRDR identifies the narrowest time interval containing a pre-specified probability mass of events, directly answering the clinical question: …

Two-Eyed Seeing Into Shipwrecks: Maritime Microscopy In The South Carolina Lowcountry, Sara A. Rich, Kayla Raimondi, Hannah Herness

Honors College Faculty Publications

By enhancing methods for how archaeology can contribute to the study of multi-species shipwrecks (or shipwreck ecology), this paper reconsiders the function of non-functioning ships and boats from anti-colonial and Native American perspectives. In partnership with the Waccamaw Indian People and the Indigenize SC Education Task Force, wood samples from several submerged wreck sites in a blackwater tidal river in the Lowcountry of South Carolina (USA) were analyzed for their archaeological potentials and for their potential to disclose the performance of individual sites within the underwater ecosystems of which they are a part. In turn, this information offers the opportunity …

Algorithmic Selection Of Iconic Constitutions, Tejas Ramdas, Patrick Chung-Chia Huang, Nuno Garoupa, Martin T. Wells, Yun-Chien Chang, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This chapter examines the influence of pre-20th century constitutions using a quantitative approach, comparing expert-selected “iconic” constitutions with those identified algorithmically. In prior work, human experts identified four influential constitutions: the U.S. 1791, France 1791, Spain 1812, and France 1848. Here, we employ a genetic algorithm and Document Term Matrix (DTM) analysis to assess which one or four of 180 pre-1899 constitutions had the greatest textual impact on 581 post-1900 constitutions. Two criteria guide the selection: coverage and originality. Through iterative optimization, the algorithm identifies the most textually influential constitutions, allowing for a direct comparison with expert selections. This chapter …

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse Jan 2025

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse

Wayne State University Dissertations

Understanding the dynamics of protein–protein and protein–ligand interactions is critical for elucidating biological function and guiding drug discovery. However, many such processes involve rare events and high energy barriers that are difficult to capture with conventional molecular dynamics (MD). Enhanced sampling techniques extend the reach of MD, enabling access to biologically relevant transitions and thermodynamic properties. In the first project, Gaussian accelerated MD (GaMD) was used to study the MEIG1–PACRG complex, a key regulator of sperm flagellar assembly. Simulations of wildtype and mutant MEIG1 (W50A, Y68A) revealed mutation-specific disruptions to the binding interface and identified druggable pockets, particularly on PACRG. …

Business ETD Collections

Food waste presents a considerable challenge to global environmental, economic, and social sustainability. This study investigates the viability of replicating the “Too Good To Go” (TGTG) platform in Mongolia, informed by the experiences of the TGTG platform in Ireland. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research includes a secondary data analysis from Ireland, an online survey administered to 162 consumers in Ulaanbaatar, and semi-structured interviews with three entrepreneurs.

The findings suggest that the success of TGTG in Ireland can be attributed to several key factors: elevated consumer awareness, a supportive environment reinforced by government policies, and accessible technology. In contrast, the …

Gene Expression And Dna Methylation Changes In Response To Hypoxia In Toxicant-Adapted Atlantic Killifish (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Neelakanteswar Aluru, Yaamini R. Venkataraman, Christopher S. Murray, Veronica Depascuale

Biology

Coastal fish populations are threatened by multiple anthropogenic impacts, including the accumulation of industrial contaminants and the increasing frequency of hypoxia. Some populations of the Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), like those in New Bedford Harbor (NBH), Massachusetts, USA, have evolved a resistance to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that may influence their ability to cope with secondary stressors. To address this question, we compared hepatic gene expression and DNA methylation patterns in response to mild or severe hypoxia in killifish from NBH and Scorton Creek (SC), a reference population from a relatively pristine environment. We hypothesized that NBH fish would show …

Multi-Attribute Characterization Of Polymeric And Lipid-Based Drug Delivery Systems By Column Switching Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Brady W. Drennan

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Drug delivery systems (DDS) are an increasingly relevant technology, owing to their ability to provide controlled release and to enable the use of otherwise toxic or labile therapeutics. However, these modalities are complex, containing a multitude of species with diverse chemical and physical properties. Their characterization, which involves the assessment of critical quality attributes (CQAs), requires numerous analytical techniques. The high-throughput demands of the biopharmaceutical industry have driven the need to consolidate these characterizations into a single analytical method. Consequently, novel analytical technologies are needed to support multi-attribute characterization. A multimodal liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) system was developed to facilitate …

The Ethical Impermissibility Of Implanting Embryos That Carry The Genetic Markers For Deafness, Cat Mastalerz

Journal of Health Ethics

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is a reproductive procedure that involves testing embryos conceived by in vitro fertilization for genetic conditions, including cystic fibrosis, Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, and controversially deafness. This paper examines the ethical dilemma surrounding parents using this technology to select for and choose to implant an embryo that carries the genetic markers for deafness. Disability and impairment are discussed, followed by an in-depth analysis of the role of Deaf culture, including the perspective of hearing children of deaf adults. The effect of deafness on life opportunities is then viewed through the lens of the child’s right to an open …

Characterization Of Cancer Cell Migration Through Brain Vascular Endothelium Model, Malak Taysser Al-Noubani Jan 2025

Characterization Of Cancer Cell Migration Through Brain Vascular Endothelium Model, Malak Taysser Al-Noubani

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

One of the hallmarks of cancer is increased vessel growth to feed the tumor’s rapid expansion. The newly formed blood vessels are immature and often leaky due to structural and functional abnormalities. This leads to ineffective anti-cancer drug delivery and provides tumor cells with additional opportunities to metastasize. We propose to develop an in vitro vascular endothelium model and introduce aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells to mimic the tumor environment, utilizing a Transwell migration assay. The impact of TNBC cells on vessel permeability will be assessed by staining for tight junction proteins, and the migratory capabilities of TNBC cells …

Tenor of Our Times

Johnny Torrio was one of the most interesting individuals to exist in the field of organized crime in Chicago. There were several factors that contributed to this fascination, not limited to the revenue he obtained through his illicit activities. He would be one of the only gang leaders to survive long enough to die of natural causes, an ending every mob boss would strive for. Historical records and accounts reveal that his mindset around crime, as well as his organizational strategy and interpersonal efforts, are, in part, reasons for his successful life and death. Comparison of other mob bosses of …

Topo-Vm-Unetv2: Encoding Topology Into Vision Mamba Unet For Polyp Segmentation, Diego Adame, Jose Angel Nunez, Fabian Vazquez Jr., Nayeli Gurrola, Huimin Li, Haoteng Tang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer-based architectures are two dominant deep learning models for polyp segmentation. However, CNNs have limited capability for modeling long-range dependencies, while Transformers incur quadratic computational complexity. Recently, State Space Models such as Mamba have been recognized as a promising approach for polyp segmentation because they not only model long-range interactions effectively but also maintain linear computational complexity. However, Mamba-based architectures still struggle to capture topological features (e.g., connected components, loops, voids), leading to inaccurate boundary delineation and polyp segmentation. To address these limitations, we propose a new approach called Topo-VM-UNetV2, which encodes topological features into …

Local-Neutrosophic Logic And Local-Neutrosophic Sets: Incorporating Locality With Applications, Florentin Smarandache, Takaaki Fujita

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The study of uncertainty has been a significant area of research, with concepts such as fuzzy sets [87], fuzzy graphs [51], and neutrosophic sets [58] receiving extensive attention. In Neutrosophic Logic, indeterminacy often arises from real-world complexities. This paper explores the concept of locality as a key factor in determining indeterminacy, building upon the framework introduced by F. Smarandache in [73]. Locality refers to processes constrained within a specific region, where an object or system is directly influenced by its immediate surroundings. In contrast, nonlocality involves effects that transcend spatial or temporal boundaries, where changes in one location have direct …
