D-Dimer As A Bio-Marker For Assessment Of Disease Activity In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients, Ahmed Othman, Amir A. Youssef, Y. Tera, Yasmin Adel
Mansoura Medical Journal
Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is considered the most common inflammatory joint disorder. It can lead to early morbidity, mortality and increased incidence of functional disability. Achieving rapid remission in early disease appears to be a beneficial strategy in preventing work disability in RA patients. The lack of specificity of commonly used inflammatory markers prompted the investigation of novel ones for estimating disease activity in RA. D-dimer has been one of these new markers, as RA is known to induce a hypercoagulable state. Aim This study aimed to investigate the possibility of utilizing D-dimer as a potential marker for assessing RA …

Neotropical regions near the equator are recognized as speciation “hot spots” reflecting their abundant biodiversity. In western South America, the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, the Galápagos Archipelago, and northern Peru form the Tropical Eastern Pacific biome. This area has the greatest heterogeneity of sympatric fiddler crab species of any portion of the planet. Since the coastal fauna has not been assessed for almost 50 years, we studied fiddler crab species diversity in Ecuador and on the Galápagos Archipelago. Preserved collecting records for various species were examined at the U.S. National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC, the American Museum …

Sonic Photovoice And Critical Literacy: Listening To And Sounding What Is Me, What Is Not Me, And What Is Between, Alexander Chadwell
Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction
This study examined sonic photovoice, a sound-based arts research method, as a tool for developing critical literacy in middle and high school students. Participants found and recorded sounds related to three categories, “what is me,” “what is not me,” and “what is between,” composed a sound collage using the sounds, and reflected on the experience. Framed by 4EA cognition, participatory sensemaking, and relational and everyday aesthetics, the study explored how listening and sounding shaped students’ conceptions of self and reality. Data from recordings, journals, and interviews suggest that the sonic engagement can foster relational, emergent understandings of self and …

A marginalized young person, often of a different physiognomy from those wielding power, sees the 'ivory tower' in her universe as a path to the learning, respect, power, and agency not available to her in her home environs. At their educational institutions, while their Blackness is not the basis for their outsider status, the Othering they experience mirrors that experienced by Black students at predominantly white universities in the real world. Theorizing the Colonial Role of Educational Institutions Following Thomas Macaulay's notorious' Minute on Education'(1835), educational systems have played a vital role in reaffirming the balance of power between the …

Institutionalisation And Institutional Evolution: A Model Of Selecting Government Officials In Ancient China, Haiwen Zhou
Institutionalisation And Institutional Evolution: A Model Of Selecting Government Officials In Ancient China, Haiwen Zhou
Economics Faculty Publications
The evolution of institutions in selecting government officials in ancient China reflected efficiency considerations and increased power concentration in the hands of the ruler. Selecting government officials in ancient China became more rule‐based over time, and standardisation and centralisation were some key features of this process. In this dynamic model, a higher volume of transactions, shown as the number of candidates needed to be evaluated, leads to institutionalisation, which has a higher fixed cost but a lower marginal cost in processing each transaction. In the steady state, a ruler with a more encompassing interest chooses a higher level of institutionalisation. …

Zinc Or Swim: Investigating Zinc Pollution From Restoration Materials, Megan R. Jensik
Zinc Or Swim: Investigating Zinc Pollution From Restoration Materials, Megan R. Jensik
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Zinc is an essential nutrient, but can be toxic at high concentrations, negatively affecting various biological functions. Gabions are galvanized metals coated in zinc that are used for many human purposes, including coastal restoration efforts attempting to avoid using plastic materials. However, gabions can degrade in marine environments, potentially leaching metal into the water and soil. There is a knowledge gap regarding the occurrence and impacts of zinc pollution in the areas where these gabions are deployed, including the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). To address this, sediment samples were collected from the IRL and analyzed for their physical and chemical …

Comparing Interactive Versus Static Educational Images On Student Learning Outcomes, Noah Schwartz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Static images routinely accompany text in educational sources such as textbooks, articles, and websites to convey complex, educational information. These are generally effective; however, current technology allows for interactive images that seem to enhance engagement. How effective are these interactive images? The present study investigated whether an interactive image produced better learning outcomes compared to a static image using the same text. Specifically, this study examined whether interactive images affected comprehension, memory, engagement, and cognitive load differently than static images. In this study, data from 153 college student participants were analyzed. First, participants were assigned to read about the neuropsychology …

Regulation Of Human Dna Mismatch Repair, Breanna Knicely
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
The DNA mismatch repair (MMR) pathway identifies and corrects misincorporations that arise during DNA replication. MMR is a pathway that is critical for maintaining genomic stability. Mutations within the MMR pathway, both germline and somatic, lead to the development of cancer. There are a variety of mechanisms that regulate the MMR pathway including protein-protein interactions, DNA damage response, and post-translational modifications. In this study, we aim to dive deeper into each of these mechanisms to obtain novel information regarding the mechanisms and regulation of human DNA MMR. In this study we generated hExo1 constructs mutating Exo1’s interactions with MSH2 and …

The Paradox Of Survival: Gendered Food Insecurity, Labor Inequalities, And Coping Strategies During The 2023/4 Drought In Eastern Ethiopia, Meron E. Lemma
The Paradox Of Survival: Gendered Food Insecurity, Labor Inequalities, And Coping Strategies During The 2023/4 Drought In Eastern Ethiopia, Meron E. Lemma
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
In drought-prone regions of Eastern Ethiopia, recurring droughts profoundly reshape everyday life in ways that deepen existing gendered inequalities. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Fedis district, including semi-structured interviews with women, project implementers, and government officials, as well as group discussions with community members, this study explores how women experience, navigate, and resist the gendered impacts of drought. By attending to the sociopolitical dynamics of drought and the development interventions that accompany it, I analyze how these forces restructure labor, land, food systems, and authority in ways that reproduce and exacerbate existing inequalities. Women’s coping strategies, ranging from begging and …
Commercial Attention Spaces: A Century Of Discourses, Measurements, And Models Of Attention In The Construction Of U.S. Advertising Markets, Jacob Saindon
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
A vast assemblage of networked devices populate our everyday spaces. Concomitant with the increasing ubiquity of media devices are advertisements. Indeed, many networked devices, specifically the “free-to-use” software applications, websites, or platforms displayed through them, are advertising-dependent. An assortment of firms within the commercial media industry—brands, agencies, publishers, vendors—work in concert to sustain a market for advertising. The core operation of the commercial media industry, I argue, is the production and exchange of attention as an economic object. In this study, I approach the production of attention and the framing of its markets as spatial processes. The continued growth of …

Effect Of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy On Milk Quality In Organic Dairy Cows, Kayla A. Young
Honors Theses and Capstones
Organic dairy systems are limited when it comes to the use of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals which creates opportunities to explore alternative treatments to promote cow health. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), a form of electromagnetic stimulation, promotes various types of healing for both animal and human medicine. Our objective was to explore the effect of PEMF on milk yield and composition in organic dairy cows. Mid-lactation Jersey cows (n = 35) of various parities were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) control (CON; n = 12); no PEMF, 2) once daily PEMF (PEMF1; n = 12), …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations
Tryptophan (Trp)-based radiotracers have excellent potential for imaging many different types of brain pathology because of their involvement with both the serotonergic and kynurenine (KYN) pathways. However, radiotracers specific to the kynurenine metabolism pathway are limited. In addition, historically Trp-based radiopharmaceuticals were synthesized with the short-lived isotope carbon-11. A newer generation of Trp-based imaging agents using the longer half-lived and commercially available isotopes, such as fluorine-18 and iodine-124, are being developed. The newly developed amino acid-based tracers have been demonstrated to have favorable radiochemical and imaging characteristics in pre-clinical studies. However, many barriers still exist in the clinical translation of …

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation is an interdisciplinary exploration of the links between public health and carceral systems, the connections between academic scholarship and advocacy, and the role of public health research in social justice movements. This dissertation begins with in-depth interviews with academic researchers and anti-carceral organizers, as well as analyses of my own experiences taking part in protests and mutual aid work, which ground conversations on the meaning of safety and care, and the role of public health. The second chapter is a systematic literature review and synthesis where I analyze academic literature about public health and carceral systems, assessing it …
Dynamical Mechanisms Of Neural Computation, Frederick Michael Berl
Dynamical Mechanisms Of Neural Computation, Frederick Michael Berl
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The brain is one of the most complex dynamical systems in the universe and despite our everyday familiarity with it, the intricacies of how it functions remain a mystery to us. It is enormously powerful, continuously learning, and able to perform computations flexibly and adapt to novel situations. Although science presently has an understanding of how individual neurons work and a general idea of what the functions of each region in the brain are, how the computations of each neuron are modulated by context and how the various regions work together to produce behavior are unclear. Here, we explore the …
A Possible Mechanism Of Miwi2-Mediated Dna Methylation By De Novo Dna Methyltransferases, Tianshu Liu
A Possible Mechanism Of Miwi2-Mediated Dna Methylation By De Novo Dna Methyltransferases, Tianshu Liu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Epigenetic information refers to inheritable information that is not directly encoded in the genomic locus. Among various epigenetic mechanisms, DNA methylation play a crucial role in development and homeostasis and undergoes dynamic remodeling during mouse embryogenesis. In the mouse germline, primordial germ cells experience a global erasure of DNA methylation, a process important for the re-establishment of parent-specific methyl-imprint in the late stage of gametogenesis. However, how DNA methylation occurs at specific genomic loci remains an open question. Miwi2, one of three murine PIWI proteins, has been implicated in guiding de novo DNA methylation, yet the molecular machinery of Miwi2-mediated …
The Gnda Microprotein Supports Atp Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli During Heat Shock, Jessica Jayne Mohsen
The Gnda Microprotein Supports Atp Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli During Heat Shock, Jessica Jayne Mohsen
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Same-strand overlapping, or nested, open reading frames (ORFs) can optimize the information content of size-constrained viral genomes by increasing the number of proteins expressed from a limited nucleotide sequence. However, nested small open reading frames (sORFs) were previously omitted from prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome annotations. It was therefore surprising when numerous nested sORFs were recently discovered in bacteria and eukaryotes. Our case study of the GndA microprotein in Escherichia coli provides evidence of an emerging model that overlapping genes can be expressed from bacterial genomes to contribute to cellular fitness. GndA interacts with the electron transport chain and ATP synthase …
Adaptation Of Learning Dynamics And Feature Representations Via The Neural Kernel, Lianghui Peng
Adaptation Of Learning Dynamics And Feature Representations Via The Neural Kernel, Lianghui Peng
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The ability to learn from experience is essential for both biological and artificial agents. To learn efficiently in complex, high-dimensional environments, agents must generalize strategically from limited data by focusing on features relevant for the task. The generalization strategy, known as inductive bias, shapes the dynamics of learning. Previous works have established the theory of neural tangent kernels that describes the learning dynamics of artificial neural networks. However, a comparable framework for understanding and quantifying inductive bias in biological systems performing behavioral tasks remains underdeveloped. Here, we introduce a neural kernel framework to characterize inductive biases of humans and artificial …
Exploring Squamate Evolution Through Focused Taxonomic And Anatomic Lenses: A Taxon-Character Approach To A Taxon-Character Problem, Dalton Meyer
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Among the living terrestrial vertebrates, the greatest diversity of verifiable species is seenamong the squamates, the group which contains the lizards and snakes. With a global distribution limited only by their general intolerance to long periods of cold temperatures, they are a ubiquitous component of modern ecosystems. Furthermore, over their roughly 180-million-year evolutionary history they have achieved tremendous morphological disparity and a range of body sizes that spans three orders of magnitude. However, our understanding of the origins and early evolution of squamates remains obscured due to persistent conflict in hypotheses generated from morphological and molecular data. This discordance is …
A Second Wave Of Notch Signaling Diversifies The Intestinal Secretory Lineage, Eleanor Zagoren
A Second Wave Of Notch Signaling Diversifies The Intestinal Secretory Lineage, Eleanor Zagoren
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The small intestine is well known for its nutrient-absorbing enterocytes; yet equally crucial for homeostasis is a diverse set of secretory cells, all presumed to originate from the same intestinal stem cell. Despite their major roles in intestinal function and health, understanding how the full spectrum of secretory cell types arises remains a longstanding challenge, largely due to their comparative rarity. Here, I investigate the specification of a rare population of small intestinal epithelial cells found in rats and humans but not mice: CFTR high expressers (CHEs). Using pseudotime trajectory analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing data from rat jejunum, I provide …
