The Forward-Forward algorithm (FF) is yet another novel invention by Geoffrey Hinton, the creator of the famous backpropagation algorithm (BP). Since its proposal, many papers have been published exploring its potential, and good progress has been made in increasing its viability. Though FF continually falls short of BP, its purpose is not to replace BP and preliminary research shows that there is plenty of room for growth. In this paper, we present a literature review for FF algorithms applied to Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) for image classification tasks and set the stage for applying FF to more complex datasets. Background In 2023, Major League Baseball (MLB) implemented the pitch clock. The effects of the pitch clock on player injury rates is largely unknown, and some, including the major league baseball players association, have suggested that pitchers may be at an increased risk of injury with its implementation. Position players have received little attention in these discussions, even though they may be at the same theorized risk of injuries. Background & Significance: Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is a complex surgical procedure commonly performed for low rectal or anal cancer. A rare complication following this surgery is the development of perineal hernias, occurring in 1-26% of cases. There is no universally accepted treatment for perineal hernias, and management is often individualized. Treatment options include conservative measures, transabdominal versus transperineal repair, varying patient positioning, and the use of mesh. This case report describes a transperineal repair in a prone jack-knife position using mesh for pelvic floor reconstruction. Introduction: Gallbladder carcinosarcoma is a rare and aggressive biliary tract malignancy, constituting approximately 1.7% of gallbladder cancers, with fewer than 100 cases reported in the English literature as of 2023. These tumors, often affecting gynecological organs, feature both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. They predominantly occur in females, with a mean presentation age of 66 years. Diagnosis is primarily based on pathological analysis, and the mainstay of treatment is surgical excision.

INTRODUCTION: Starvation ketoacidosis represents a rare but complicated maternal morbidity that primarily occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. With increased insulin resistance and metabolism manifesting in pregnancy, prompt care is required to diagnose and treat starvation ketoacidosis as it appears at an accelerated rate. However, despite the severity of maternal and fetal complications arising from this condition, standardized treatment protocols have not been elucidated. Members of the lungless salamander family (Caudata: Plethodontidae), currently composed of over 500 species in 29 genera, nine tribes, and two subfamilies (1), have been grouped together for almost 200 years. This consistent taxonomic history suggests they form a distinct cognitum and quite possibly an apobaramin. Despite their abundance and diversity, no formal baraminological analyses have been conducted for this family (see Wood (2)). Hennigan (3), however, tentatively defaulted to the genus level for lungless salamander kinds and suggested future research would probably lump them into larger taxonomic groupings. Introduction: Cocaine use in the United states is seen in many cases within the hospital system. Typically, they present with tachycardia, hypertension, sweating, even heart attack. Due to the uncontrolled sale and distribution of drugs, patients can be exposed to other additives in drugs which can lead to unexpected complications. Cocaine laced with levamisole (an antiparasitic drug used in veterinary medicine) can lead to agranulocytosis and neutropenia. The Future of BSE Days 2025: Growing a Regenerative BSE brought together over 150 faculty, staff, students, and partners to envision the next quarter-century of the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. The event emphasized regeneration—not only of resources and ecosystems, but also of ideas, learning models, and relationships. Across seven major sessions—three Spark Talks and four Pillar Workshops—participants explored how BSE can thrive amid technological disruption, demographic change, and societal transformation.

[Excerpt] This article occupies the space between the ongoing, newly energized development of state constitutional law and the fraught public policy field of privacy protections. It analyzes a new state constitutional provision that is explicitly and exclusively about information privacy. The provision, Part I, Article 2b9 of the New Hampshire Constitution,10 reads as follows: An individual’s right to live free from governmental intrusion in private or personal information is natural, essential, and inherent.11 The provision extends an individual’s privacy right significantly beyond that of both the federal and New Hampshire state constitutions. The nature and strength of biotic interactions change along stress gradients, but the importance of these interactions across estuarine gradients is under studied. Here, we examined how consumption varies across estuarine salinity gradients by deploying standardized baits (‘squidpops’) to measure consumption pressure along the gradients of five estuaries in Oregon, USA. The relationship between consumption and stress was nonlinear: consumption pressure peaked slightly at mid salinity and decreased at low salinity, especially as temperature increased, in the five estuaries studied. This finding does not support either of two existing models for consumption across gradients, including the Consumer Stress Model and …

Understanding the role of apex predators on ecosystems is essential for designing effective conservation strategies. Supporting recovery of apex predators can have many benefits; one that has been rarely examined is control of invasive prey. We investigated whether a recovering apex predator, the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), can exert local control over a global marine invader, the green crab (Carcinus maenas). We determined that southern sea otters in Elkhorn Slough estuary in California can consume large numbers of invasive green crabs and found strong negative relationships in space and time between otter and green crab abundance. Collaboration plays a critical role in wildfire risk mitigation efforts. This study examines collaborative wildfire governance networks within Southwest Idaho, a priority landscape designated in 2022 under the USDA Forest Service's Wildfire Crisis Strategy (WCS). Through survey data from 64 respondents, the Fueling Adaptation study aimed to identify the structure, capacity, and gaps in governance networks addressing wildfire risk in Southwest Idaho and understand how WCS investments have influenced wildfire management in the area. It may come as a surprise to learn that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has done just that as a condition for allowing access to some pharmaceutical products that create a serious risk of birth defects. Over the last few decades, the agency has demanded that patients using certain teratogenic agents—now numbering over a dozen drugs prescribed for a variety of conditions, ranging from severe acne and psoriasis to multiple myeloma and pulmonary hypertension—agree to avoid becoming pregnant, sometimes for years after completing their course of treatment. Allowing private parties in litigation to stack the deck in their favor through forum shopping is standard fare in the United States. But not everyone realizes that public legislators engage in a similar exercise when they stack the deck in one party’s favor through “jurisdiction-stripping” or “jurisdiction-channeling” provisions. Congress can strip federal courts of all or some of its jurisdiction, channel jurisdiction over a particular class of cases into one particular court, and even strip the U.S. Supreme Court of its appellate jurisdiction. Despite significant gains over the last half-century, predators such as mountain lions, wolves, and bears are in the crosshairs once again. Scientific management, democratic principles, and the holding of wildlife resources in trust for the public are all foundational pillars of the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation, yet state wildlife agencies and legislatures routinely fail to uphold these values where predators are concerned. Many of these tensions were thrust into the public consciousness in 2020 when gray wolves were temporarily delisted under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), resulting in a disastrous wolf hunting season in Wisconsin. Flaws In The Preemption Defense To Liability Claims Against Generic Drug Manufacturers, Lars Noah

More than a dozen years have passed since the U.S. Supreme Court decided that federal preemption protects manufacturers of generic (but not brand-name) drugs from most types of products liability claims. This seemingly arbitrary distinction sprang from a peculiarity in the regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That agency soon thereafter proposed to modify its rules in order to eliminate this asymmetry in how the implied preemption defense worked to bar inadequate warning claims, but its effort ultimately failed, while lower courts have confronted some creative efforts to circumvent the special protection enjoyed by generic drug manufacturers. …

Physical and symbolic aspects of bodies limit the migration trajectories of female domestic workers from a Buddhist community in coastal Sri Lanka. Government regulations and family decisions regarding women’s overseas labour draw upon and in turn influence discourses about gender, sexuality, age, health, and class. This ethnographic analysis illustrates that local norms task women with nurturing the brains of babies, preserving the chastity of teenage daughters, caring for frail elders, and preventing their working-class husbands from overindulging in liquor or having sex with other women. North of the Arctic Circle in far northwestern Alaska, Kobuk Valley National Park is a remote, roadless protected area transected by the Kobuk River—one of the northernmost salmon-bearing rivers in North America. Characterized by tundra, taiga, and the dramatic 25-square-mile Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, the park serves as a critical pathway for nearly half a million migrating caribou. Significant archaeological sites have been documented along the Kobuk River, demonstrating thousands of years of human settlement, fishing, caribou hunting, and many other cultural activities. The late 1970s and early '80s saw a regime shift in wildlife protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). That shift may be impeding the recovery of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoise species) in ways that are yet underexplored. As enacted, the MMPA and ESA established a conservation framework designed to reduce, to the fullest extent possible, "takes" of protected species.
